Using VMWare View Desktops without the View-AD on client

Hello,

we testing VMWare View for our educational network. As our network is very clustered and our departments using a wide variaty of logon systems we need to find a way to use VMWare View Windows Desktops without automatic AD-integration or declaring not to use them as standard login system.

So the client can be member of our management domain (which manages the users which use the VMWare View) but after logging in the View-Client and selecting the desktop there should be a client specific login screen (p.E. local Windows log in, Novell Client). Is there a way to do this?

I couldn't find an option for using local login.

We also have the problem that there is a faculty using its own active directory. So we plan to distribute the virtual clients in our net but after using a dummy user for log in in the view environment the client should use the other active directory. Is there a easy way to do this?

Thanks a lot for your hints.

Tobias

Hi community,

Well,we have a project where I need to  set up mock-ups in order to test 3 scenarios of virtualiozation: the  "application virtualization", session virtualization" and "VDI".  so  what I need is a test tool to verify the number maximum of simultaneous  users or sessions that can be established in each scenario.

PLEASE I need your help or any idea that can help me finding the the adequate tool

I see that I can re-balance desktops based on the datastore, but what about using DRS to keep the hosts in a View implentation, load balanced? Is this possible?

Thanks.

5.1.1 agents

Has any one had an issue with 5.1.1 agents on a windows7 pro os?

All the usual installed apps.

Coming from a 4.6 enviorment we only upgraded pc1-10 to the latest agent and those connect then drop with in seconds then reconnect.

I have tested this with the View client and samsung zero clients.

Our 4.6 agents on the same desktops connect just fine.

There is a thread about uninstalling flash

my testings...

esxi 5.1 standard

view premier 5.1.x

our desktops are still hw7

view connection server 5.1.1

agent 4.6 and 4.6.1 connects fine

agent 5.0 connects fine

going to try 5.1.0

does not work 5.1.1

pcoip disconnects at welcome screen

We were running vmware view 5.0 with esxi 4.1 and vcenter 4.1.  pcoip worked fine.

Now we are on view 5.1.1 799444 with esxi 5.1.0 838463 and vcenter 5.1.0a.  Agents are 5.1.1 799444

pcoip no longer works.  Tried using PC client 5.2.0, ipad client, and android client.  They all disconnect after seeing the Windows 7 x64 Welcome screen.

I tried reinstalling the agent but that didn't help.  Set resolution to 800 x 600 , didn't help.  It does the same thing connecting locally so it isn't a firewall issue.  Any ideas?

Monitoring View with Nagios

Hi,

I thought I'd post this in here as I've searched high and low and found barely any information on this particular topic.

I've recently deployed Nagios within our company in order to monitor key hosts and services. In doing so this got me thinking how I could use Nagios to monitor certain things within VMware View. Having played around with Exchange PowerShell scripts and Nagios I started to look at VMware PowerCLI. I couldn’t work out a way to pull the information I wanted using the default PowerCLI commands so I started to have a dig around online. During my investigations I then came across the Unofficial VMware View PowerShell cmdlets.

http://cliffdavies.com/blog/vmware/unofficial-advanced-vmware-view-powershell-cmdlets/

Using the above I was able to extract the very information I was after, which I could then run through a script and ultimately report this back to Nagios. So with this in mind I set about writing some scripts for VMware View monitoring.

Having just experienced a major issue where all 350 View VMs went into an ‘already used’ state, meaning no one could logon, I thought what better place to start than to write a script to count the number of ‘problem desktops’ and then report this back to Nagios for alerting and notification purposes.

Using Get-Desktops within the unofficial cmdlets I was able to pull out the ‘state’ of each VM Desktop. This is then run through an ‘if’ statement to find ‘problem’ desktops and a count is produced. The count is then compared to the warning and critical levels defined within the script and then the script exits with the relevant code, 0, 1 or 2, to pass this back to Nagios along with the current number of problem desktops.

The script is executed on the View Connection Server itself using NSClient++ which is initiated by Nagios using a check_nrpe command. There is a great article on telnetport25.com about executing PowerShell scripts using check_nrpe & NSClient++. - http://www.telnetport25.com/2012/01/installing-nagios-on-ubuntu-server-11-10-then-monitoring-windows-and-exchange-serverspart-3setting-up-basic-exchange-2010-monitoring/ - In fact I followed the tutorials from that site for my entire Nagios build, they really are great.

One thing I also had to do was to amend the uadv_vmware_view.psm1 file included with the unofficial cmdlets so that it doesn’t print to screen when a successful connection is made to the View Connection Server. I just amended the ‘if’ statement within the psm1 file to achieve this, pretty simple. I have attached this below too.

So now I will get alerted by email and visually on our IT monitor when we hit a certain amount of ‘problem’ desktops, which is great as I don’t want to have to check the View Admin console every hour or so.

If anyone wants any further information please feel free to let me know and I’ll be happy to oblige.

This also leads me to think what else can be monitored within View using these cmdlets?

Printers not allways connecting to Linked clones machines

Hello,
i have a problem using thinprint printers in linked clones desktops. Then users connects to their desktops sometimes they are not getting printers. I use usb and mostly network printers. If users go into control panel they can not see printers showing (even if they wait a lot of time). If users disconnect from virtual machine and then connect again to virtual machine they are getting these printers. That is annoying to play like that. Usualy everything is fine, but i do not want to see problems like that. I am using VMware View Administrator 5.1.2 I have windows XP and Windows 7 machines. I use vmware tools 9.0.1 and view agent 5.1.2 Maybe you have suggestions how to get rid of this problem?

Does anyone know where to find this?  It is required to enable Unity Touch and the Blast Secure Gateway for HTML.  Unfortunatly it isn't on the download site.

Perhaps this is a new scavenger hunting game to help us prepare for all those Easter Eggs at the end of the month..

Linked-Clone Pools and WSUS

I am a very junior network administrator and I have been thrown in the middle of this pond (VMware) with little or no training or support from senior engineering,... I will do the best I can describe my troubles and if further clarification is necesary I will do my best to provide it.

Going through the process of optimizing a Win7 image for use in a linked clone automatic pool that will be managed with View Administrator. Using the guide located here http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-View-OptimizationGuideWindows7-EN.pdf I have been preparing the base image through vSphere 4.10. This will be used to provide a series of pools for our Customer Service department.

The attached Commands.bat script inside the guide will turn WSUS off.

I am looking for a step by step procedure to utilize the base image, snapshots, WSUS and any other tool available in vShpere and View Admin to update the base image while keeping WSUS turned off on the clones. So far I have been unable to penetrate the VMware arcana short of keeping two base images and somehow copying the WSUS enabled master after the monthly updates have completed off then rerunning the command.bat on the new copy, then using the new copy to snapshot and recompose the pool. It would seem to me that there should be a simpler way to do this.

Thank you in advance.

Horizon View and "Blast" protocol

Hello,

I recently updated our Connection Servers and Security Servers to Horizon View 5.2 and I see the option to enable HTML5 access to the pool but it states that a desktop feature pack needs to be installed.  I haven't been able to find this "feature pack" anywhere.  I've been digging through the administration guide for 5.2 and it really doesn't mention anything about HTML access.

Can someone point me in the right direction so I can start doing some testing with HTML5 access to View desktops?

Thanks!

Log that shows users connection quality?

I've got an executive that is using his personal laptop to connect to our View environment from home via his wireless router and claims the virtual machine performance is very poor.

The VM is running Windows 7 that's been optimized and when he is in the office runs perfectly fine. Other users throughout the company also reports zero issues. He only experiences poor performance if he's home on his wireless network or at a hotel using their wireless connection. To me it's clear, it's his internet connection when he's not in the office.

However trying to get other management or executives to believe this is a whole other story. Is there a log by chance, anywhere that I can bring up that will show what I believe is the problem?

Certificate issues with VMware View 5.1 and Igel ThinClient

Hi,

currently we have a little issue with the configuration of View 5.1 and our Igel Linux ThinClients.

We did base installation of VMware View with 2 connection server. Both were installed with their default certificate.

Since this certificate is recognized by the thinclients as an insecure connection and it is best practise to replace the default certificate with signed ones created with an internal CA or some certificate provider (versign, ec), we create a new one using our internal CA and openssl for the .key and .csr.

We created the .crt and the .pfx and replaced the default certificate on both servers with new one for each server.

Everything's fine, the connection server now do not have an error regarding their certifcates.

After that we exportet the .pfx as a .cer and imported them an the igel using the igel UMS. Igel provides a instruction how to do this.

But now if we use the thinclient to connect to one of the connection server we get an error statement that the certificate is  invalid and I'm not able to connect, not even insecurely.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be or I did something wrong creating / importing the certificates?

The certs work fine using the windows View Client,

Thanks in advance.

Nvidia Quadro

I assume that many of you with exictement have read through all news in vSphere 5.1

What cought my eye in View point of view was this:

"

Improved 3D Graphics Support– (View Only) –  hardware acceleration with possiblity to leverage NVIDIA’s hardware  cards installed in ESXi server, where those graphics cards are  virtualized and used in View Desktops. It’s targeted for graphics  intensive workloads, CAD designers, medical imaging etc…

NVIDIA Quadro 4000/5000/6000 and NVIDIA Tesla M2070Q are supported graphics cards.  Note that the ESXi Image profile must be installed with the NVIDIA GPU VIB file."

It certainly raises some questions for me:

a) The Nvidia GPU VIB-files is that free of charge or is it licensed from Nvidia or Vmware?

b) Have anyone tested 5.1 with Quadro-cards (and VMware Techie out there?) Pros? Cons?

c) Is the GPU fully accessible from the View guest or is there some kind of abstraction layer in between? After some research it seems like the abstraction layer is utilizing Xorg in a clever way.

View Horizon 5.2 and Random Reboot PCOIP Tera2 Zero Clients

We just updated to 5.2 yesterday. Now some Tera2 PCOIP Zero clients randomly reboot throughout the day.   The VM is fine and you can connect back in to the session without issue.  The reboot happens without warning, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it occurs.

We are on the latest PCOIP Zero client firmware 4.0.3

Anyone else have this problem?

Uneven placement of images with local SSD storage

$

All,

I'm running through a PoC project with a customer using View 5.1 following the guidelines in "VMware Reference Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops on Local Solid-State Storage with VMware View 5"  as close as we can.

http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/10278

I have eight nodes all identically configured with local SSD storage - again all identical model drives, all empty.

Creating a pool of linked clones across this group creates some very uneven placement of the images.

As an example if I create a pool of 80 VM's on the 8 local discs the distribution will be something like...

Disc 1 - 30

Disc 2 - 5

Disc 3 - 0

Disc 4 - 25

Disc 6 - 10

Disc 7 - 10

Disc 8 - 0

If I then remove 30 V's from the pool it might delete all 30 from disk 1. At the moment every action on the pool has to be manually controlled.

Has anybody else come across this behavour.

VMWare View 5.2.1 behind Corporate Web proxy

$

I have been asked to setup VmWare View Client in my corporate environment to allow internal staff to access desktops off site via the Internet.

We have deployed verison 5.2.1 of VMWare View Client to the desktops.

Our environment does not allow desktops direct access to the Internet, everything is proxied. A desktop cannout route to the Internet or exit via the firewalls.

I start the client and it comes up in the initial stage of wanting to access http://x.y.z which is out on the Internet.

I click connect and get a green tick to show it has conncted and in the corporate proxy logs I see the CONNECT and traffic on the wire.

I enter the username and RSA passcode. I see network traffic hit the internal  corporate proxy and I progress to the next stage

Now I am prompted for the username, password and the domain to authenticate against

I enter these and again see network traffic to the internal corporate proxy and the updates at the bottom of the client show I have authenticated successfully.

Then it falls apart. The client says it is attemtping to open the session to the remote desktop and after a number of minutes fails.

At this point I see my internal desktop attempting DIRECT access to host x.y.z on the Internet, whch of course fails.

Up until this point all traffic has used the internal corporate HTTP/HTTPS proxy just fine. I can see the traffic hitting the internal proxy which is allowed Internet access. A wireshark capture on my desktop shows no attempts to reach the Internet host directly until the final stage when the client tries to open the view the the remote machne.

Question: Should the whole process be able to be proxied? ie, should I be able to run VmWare View Client and have all traffic go via the corporate HTTP/HTTPS proxy?

I can't draw a picture here but the network summary is something like:

Internet Client Desktop IP: 1.1.1.1

Internal HTTP/HTTPS Proxy: 2.2.2.2

Internet Target Server: 9.9.9.9

Stage 1: Initial connect                 Traffic 1.1.1.1 -> 2.2.2.2:443 -> 9.9.9.9:443  (Result Green tick)

Stage 2: RSA Authentication         Traffic 1.1.1.1 -> 2.2.2.2:443 -> 9.9.9.9:443 (Result Success)

Stage 3: Domain Authentication     Traffic 1.1.1.1 -> 2.2.2.2:443 -> 9.9.9.9:443 (Result Success)

Stage 4: View remote desktop       Traffic 1.1.1.1 -> 9.9.9.9:443  (Result Failure as there is no route or outbound firewall access)

I don't have access to the View Manager. I am the client in this case.

Thanks for any assistance or pointers.

VMWare View Workstation, Multiple users

I've searched google, to no avail. Is it possible to assign one user to multiple View virtual workstations? When I try to assign a user to multiple workstations, I get an error stating 'The user cannot be assigned the selected Desktop becuase this user has already assigned ownership of a desktop in the pool'. Yet in the VMWare view client, I have an option toi 'switch desktop'.

Is there any way to assign a user to moret than one desktop? The client would suggest 'yes'....

Upgrade vcenter server to 5.1 without interupt view connections

Dear Experts,

We need to upgrade the vcenter server to 5.1. Vmware view connection server will NOT be upgraded

Esx servers will be upgraded to 5.1 as well

Working with

- vmare vcenter server 5.0

- vmare view connection server 5.0 ( no linked clone, automated pool )

- ESXi 5.0

Plan :

- In place upgrade vcenter server 5.0 to vcenter server 5.1

Question :

- Could we perform the vcenter upgrade without interrupting the vmare view machines ?

- Does i need to reboot the view connection manager server

- During the upgrade, will the user loose  connection to the their machines ?

- During the upgrade will the user be able to authenticate, start up their machines ?

Thanks for your support
