When going to our view portal page (view.victorschools.org) I get this message

If I go to https://view.victorschools.org the proper portal page comes up. Is there any way to automatically redirect to the https page?

View Agent 5.12 Slow log out with Persona Manager enabled

Hi folks.

We are having some issues with the 5.12 Agent.

With PM enabled (over-riding AD location), it seems to take several minutes on log out whilst the data is being written back to the network share:

  • I can watch the console on the machine that is logging out to see the "logging out..." message which lasts several minutes.
  • I can watch the PM repository where I can see a {LONG-GUID-NUMBER} where files are written to (before being moved to the root profile folder). Files in here increase in size at about 1KB per second. In particular, a metadata.db file seems to take a long time.

Now, here is the important thing:

Log out is fast (several seconds) if I use an old Agent (5.0).

More info:

  • Automated Linked Clone pool is created.
  • Both tests (agent 5.0 and 5.12) are using the same base image for linked clones.
  • Virusscan is not present on the client or hypervisor (for testing).
  • Both tests go to same repository location (have actually tested 2 different locations on different servers).
  • Both tests use machines from the same OU (blocked inheritance, only View Agent/PM settings received).
  • Same user is used in both scenarios.

Anyone have any ideas I can look into?

From the above tests, we are fairly sure that the network is not causing an issue as writeback is fine on the clones with agent 5.0.

Thanks.

No desktop sources available with VmHeadroomCount = 0

Hello,

we have a view floating pools with only one desktop. Those floating pools are rarely used. They are available for legacy reasons. So, we do not want to let them powered on all the time. Therefore I set the number of spare desktops to 0 by setting the pae-VmHeadroomCount of the pool to 0. Unfortuneatley View seems to able unable to turn the desktop on, as soon as somebody would like to connect to the desktop with the View client. So it shows the message: "No desktop sources available".

If I power the desktop on with vSphere then View is able to connect to the desktop...

I would appreciate any help!

Daniel

I have 2 View connection brokers in the DMS, not domain objects.  Have cert from GlobalSign.

All of my internal brokers have certs installed and all are green.  I have the cert in a .cer format.

Do I have to convert it to make it exportable? and if so, how?

local administrator access on persistent desktops

$

Hi all,

On our physical desktops we give the owner of the PC local administrator access in case they need to install applications etc... etc...

How would we do this using a persistent pool? I would hate to add the staff AD security group to the local administrator's group within the master image that gets snapshotted to make the persistent desktop pool-- then anyone who could log in would have admin access to that desktop!

Also, if we do log into a user's virtual desktop as the domain Administrator and add the machine owner to the local Administrators group, won't that change in security be wiped out after a recompose to update the desktop from a new snapshot?

How are other people dealing with this?

Also what is the best practice for allowing users to install their own applications, have them remain on the machine, and also allow new snapshots to be rolled out via recompositions?

Virtual hardware goes missing after pool reprovision

I require the use of a virtual COM port within my View Horizon virtual Windows 7 Desktop. The virtual COM port software and virtual hardware are installed individually to each replica Desktop. The virtual software/hardware is provided by Digi (digi.com) and works very well inside my Windows 7 virtual desktop. It creates a COM port under "Device Manager" within the operating system. However, when I reprovision my desktop pool within View Composer all the desktops lose their virtual COM port. This is a problem, because each user has a uniquely configured virtual COM port.  Any suggestions on what to do? I've also reached out to Digi for assistance.

Thanks for your assistance

Linked Clone Desktop joining Domain and then gets disjoined after reboot

Hi,

I have an AD in which a DHCP server is configured.

My parent image is not connected to the domain. I have created a customization script using the Customization Specification Manager. The linked clone desktop uses this script to get into the domain.

Peculiarly, the linked clone desktop is making an entry in the Active Directory Computers and Users, but when it reboots and displays the login screen, it gets into WORKGROUP instead of domain.

Ultimately I get a customization error in the View Administrator Console.

Any possible explaination for this ? Am I missing out something ?

I did release the ip and flush the DNS before taking the snapshot.

Thanks

copy and paste of text and images between local system and desktop not working

One of the key features of PCoIP mentioned in the documentation is

Copy and paste of text and images between the local system and the desktop is supported, up to 1MB.

I am able to copy from local machine to vdi, but not from  vdi to local machine. Is it bi-directional, or is it only one-way.

SmartCard reader as a pass-through device for VMware View 5.0 (NOT USED FOR AUTHENTICATION)

I'm have troubles using USB Smart Card Readers. Some work others don't.

  • ESXi 5.0
  • View 5.0
  • Dell FX100 (Zero Client, lastest firmware from teradici: 4.0.2, Tera1 Chipset)
  • VM: Windows 7 SP1 32 bit
  • Protocol: PCoIP

The option in the View Agent 'PCoIP Server / PCoIP SmartCard' is actived.

Smartcard Readers:

  • Cherry ST-1044U (works)
  • GemPlus (works)
  • ACR30U (doesn't work)
  • ACR38T (doesn't work)

We really need the ACR38T because this one is a SIM card reader, we can put the SIM card in without any adaptors.

With the Zero Clients:

What I've noticed is that when I use a SmartCard Reader that works (Cherry / GemPlus), it isn't listed in the Device Manager of Windows. And when I plug in one that doesn't work (ACR), Windows shows it in the Device Manager as a SmartCard Reader. It is listed as the correct SmartCard Reader, name & drivers are correct. But non of the software that has to read the smartcard can find a SmartCard Reader

With a Windows Client:

I've did some other test using a Windows 7 client, with the VMware View for windows on it. And from the moment I plug in a SmartCard Reader that also works with the Zero Client, the device is not listed under the 'Connect USB Device'-menu of the VMware View Client and the redirection works as it should be.

From the moment I plug in a SmartCard Reader that didn't work with the Zero Client, like the ACR's, the device is listed under the 'Connect USB Device'-menu of the VMware View Client. When I tick that one on, the redirection occurs just like the zero client. The device is visible under the Device Manager of the VM, and non of the software is able to work or even see it. When I tick the device off in the 'Connect USB Device'-menu of the VMware View Client. The device also disappears from the Device Manager of the VM and the application on the VM are able to work with de SmartCard Reader.

Conclusion:

It seems that VMware does not handle all SmartCard Readers equally, but why? And how can I make the ACR-devices to work.

Extra Steps I've took:

  • I experimented already with the USB device filters. When I add the VID & PID of the ACR SmartCard Reader to the 'HardwareIDFilters', the device is blocked, as expected, and not usable or visible in the VM.
  • I also hadn't any luck when adding the device to the 'AllowHardwareIDs'.
  • Change the settings of the Zero Client (after every setting, I restarted the VM and the Zero Client):
    • ECHI on or off
    • Add the SmartCard Reader as bridged device

Like I said before, it's just like VMware forward the ACR SmartCard Readers like an normal USB device and the Cherry/GemPlus SmartCard Reader like a device with which you can authenticate with.

I really do not need the SmartCard Authentication of VMware View.

Any idea's?

Thanks in advance.

View Admin Portal - 2 Domains and One is Red!

$

Hi All,

In View Admin, in the dashboard, one of the red squares pertains to one of my domains. There are two domains listed...one is green the other no good.

Im getting the message:

Trust Relationship: The trust relationship could not be determined

Status: Domain status error detected. View admin is unable to perform operations related to domain.

I suspect because View is trying for a two way trust, which we do not allow in our environment and/or SSO component of View/VMware 5.1 +. It looks like this is preventing us from entitling users to VMs because all of the users are on this "red" domain.

Any insight into what we can check for / change to make this domain "green" would be appreciated. Also what are the requirements to have multiple domains work in View Admin would be great.

Thank you

Confused about entering licenses

$

Hi

I'm doing an install of View 5.1 in a vCenter 5.1 environment and I'm running into a strange issue. I have a number of licenses in the MyVMware portal. There are two "VMware View 5 Desktop Server" licenses each for 10 VMs and there are 4 "VMware View 5 Premier Add-On" licenses of 50, 10, 20, 20 VMs.

Strange thing is that I can enter the VMware View 5 Desktop Server licenses in the vCenter Server Licensing menu and they show up as expected with 10 VMs each. But the "VMware View 5 Premier Add-On" license are all invalid according to vCenter, because I get an invalid license error.

So I called VMware Licensing Support and they told me that I should enter those "VMware View 5 Premier Add-On" license in the View Admin interface. When I go there, I indeed can enter the licenses, one by one and View accepts them. But I cannot see the license keys I have already entered and I also can't see how many VMs I'm entitled to run.

The support engineer told me this is correct, expected behaviour and I will only get a warning when I'm near the license limit. I have a hard time believing this and was wondering what your experiences are. How can you check the number of available VM licenses?

Regards

Gabrie

Are most large companies really pushing out patches every patch Tuesday?

If so, are they packaging them through SCCM or updating the base image and doing a recompose?

System hangs on bootup with VMWare View Agent and Kaspersky Antivirus

$

We have tested this on several Windows 7 systems (physical PC) that will hang on both shutdown and restart after installing VMWare View Agent. We did monitor the driver install and ensured it had completed before rebooting (so its not an issue of the VMWare View drivers not completing the installation). In our testing this only happens when the following conditions are present:

1.  Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows version 8.1.0.646 (a) is installed
2. VMWare View Agent version 5.1.1.799444 is installed with the option for USB redirection (if installed without USB redirection, everything works fine)
3. Kaspersky agent build included the "Device Control" component, whether or not it is enabled by policy.
Troubleshooting Steps:
1. Disabled Kaspersky Device Control (so it should not be monitoring USB devices).
RESULT: System hangs at startup
2. Added several exclusions and trusted app entries within the Kaspersky Policy for the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub files including the following:
Excluded Folders/Files:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbd.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\vmwvhub.sys
c:\windows\system32\WdfCoInstaller01009.dll
C:\Program Files\Teradici Corporation\PCoIP Host Software\ [all subfolders]
C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\ [all subfolders]
C:\Program Files (x86)\vmware\infrastructure\[all subfolders]
Trusted Apps:
C:\Program Files\vmware\vmware view\agent\bin\wssm.exe
RESULT: System hangs at startup
3. Updated the VMWare View Agent to the current 5.1.2 version
RESULT: System hangs at startup
4. Uninstalled Kaspersky entirely
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
5. Uninstalled VMWare View entirely (no more system hang at startup)
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
6. Disabled the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub Service from starting by changing the Start from a a 3 (automatic) to a 4 (disabled):
Key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\vmusb
Value:
[dword]Start = 0x00000003
Once we do this the computer will boot fine but we are obviously unable to use the View Agent with USB redirection.
NOTE: Once the system is hunt, you must start in Safe Mode and make the above registry change to be able to restart the computer without hanging.
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
Workarounds/Solutions:
The solution so far has  been to create a build version of the "Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows (8.1.0.646)" install that does not include the "Device Control" Component. Even though our policy disables the use of the Device Control component, the supposedly latent running of this component's files trigger the hang. We did create a new build version of the Kaspersky client that had all components other than "Device Control" selected and we had no issues with booting and using the VMWare View Agent or Kaspersky under those conditions.
So to review, here are the workarounds discovered so far:
1. Install a build version of the Kaspersky agent that has the "Device Control" components unselected.
2. Install the VMWare View Agent with the option for USB Redirection set to not install/disabled.
3. If you did install both the Kaspersky Device Control component and VMWare View Agent with USB Redirection, you must disable the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub "vmusb" service in the registry as noted above or it will hang on the next reboot/restart.
NOTE: This will have the same impact as installing VMWware View Agent with USB Redirection disabled/unselected as the required services will not be running and USB Redirection cannot occur.
We have opened incidents with both Kaspersky and VMWare and are in the process of providing information in hopes of getting a co-existing resolution. However, I wanted to post this information in the event someone else is having the same issue.

Hello,

i need please your help.

While trying to deploy a Windows 7 Pool, all my desktops(9 desktop) were appeared as customizing status.

i have wait 15 min and the state has not changed.

when i connected from vmware view client i recieved "this desktop currently has no desktop source available. please try connection to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator"

my question:

Q1: is it normal to have the staus "customizing" knowning that the Vdisk size of each Virtual desktop is 25 GB after 15 min?

Q2: I have choosen the default configuration to create the link clone and also i used"use quickprep" on guest customization windows? please confirm if this procedure is correct?

Q3: on the parent of VM, i assigned the ip address from my DHCP server. how can assign ip for my child machine(i mean the link clone machines) without conflict? is it from my DHCP server? (if i not assigned a dhcp on my VM parent, the new machines will have the same ip, is it correct??)??

thanks,

NFS for View environment

Can someone help with following questions please?

- Is there any recommendation on NetApp NFS LUN/ datastore size for VMWare View replica and LInkedClones? I am not sure if there is any suggested number of VMs per LUN or LUN size similar to SAN? How these numbers impact virtual desktops performance with respect to IOPS.

- I believe there is nothing to define like block size, muti pathing etc...

Thanks in advance

Setting up View lab and need some clarification

I bought a 1U server and a small netgear hub and a workstation. I  installed ESXi on the server and gave it the same private IP range of 10.0.*.* that my comcast modem uses for my dhcp range.  When building the ESXi host what IP address should I give it for DNS?   My question is this, should I run a cat 5 cable from my ESXi host to one of the ports in my cable modem? What do other folks do?
