Local Mode Only Pools and Powering Off

I have a few pools I've got Remote Access disabled and so the pool can only be used when checking out locally. View still keeps at least one VM powered on in vSphere. Is there a way to have View keep them all powered off?

200+ desktop pool storage question

For best performance with a FibreChannel flash accelerated storage array, is it best practice to create multiple datastores keeping multiple master replicas (one for each datastore) and associated linked clones per desktop pool, or to set it up as one main datastore containing the master replica and then just have multiple datastores for the linked clones?

I hope my question makes sense....

Basically my current setup:  250 desktops in a pool, 5 datastores each having it's own replica image and 50 linked clones per datastore.

Was pondering if my setup was 1 primary datastore with a single replica and then have "x" amount of datastores with "x" amount of linked clones per datastore if that would be any more efficient performance wise....just thinking then the array would just have to keep one replica for the entire pool in cache for all the desktops, but would that one primary datastore be overwhelmed by a few hundred linked clones simultaneously accessing it?

Thoughts?  I can't seem to find any definitive information on this, just a Nimble (which actually is not my storage vendor) best practices guide that seems to contradict itself, in one paragraph it says that they recommend the Replica and the Linked Clone to be in the same datastores and then later in the document they state "For Linked Clones, we suggest using a separate datastore for the Master Replica and one or more datastores for the Linked Clone portion.  For the desktop image this will place some of the static data (e.g., OS) in one location and the delta (user profile) data in another."

Horizon View HTML Access - Customize domain selection

Hi all,

we are in a multi tenant environment, and obviously we don't want a customer to see the other customers' domains.

The best solution for us would be to modify the domain field, from the drop down menu to a simple text box, is it possible? how can I do that?

if this isn't possible, what is the best way to achieve our goal, keeping in mind that exclude/include domains list isn't applicable in our environment because we don't want to setup a new connection server for every new customer?

thanks a lot

I am wondering if anyone has experience with this printer or any other usb connected point of sale printer and vmware view?

It seems to work when it wants to and disconnect randomly and I have to do some sort of rain dance to get it back. If fact, I am not even sure how I get it back. I stop the printer spool service, turn it off, connect the usb in a different port.... and then magically it comes back. Thanks for any help.

Persona and Windows Roaming Profiles

I am looking for some deployment ideas\models for our Persona implementation and would like to know how some of you tackled this one.

My director just got back from VMworld where he spoke with several others that stated they leveraged Windows Roaming profiles and Persona to better the end user's experience. This lead me to my question.

Currently I am leveraging Persona to control our user's Desktop folder, Registry Hive, and Roaming folder. I then have their other folders managed via Windows Folder Redirection to the same directory.

My thought is that they utilized Persona for View and Roaming Profiles for full desktops, but I wonder if there is any benefit or reason to utilize both in some manner on a View desktop.

Thank you for taking time to read this and any thoughts are welcome.

Repurposed Desktop - Microsoft ThinPC

If I run MS thinpc as an OS on a desktop to connect to my view environment, does the thinpc still require AntiVirus Software  and Windows Updates and all the fun PITA stuff that go with it.? Or can thinpc be locked down enough tthat is only purpose is to boot into the view system and deliver the virtual desktop without all pain and hassles of a regular OS.

Thanks

For last two weeks, the Esxi 5.1  is sending us warning at 12.24 am with CPU spike..  After further  investigation I found out that the VM's CPU are  spiking at his time on most of the machines. This was causing the ESXi to spike and send us warning message.

Applications and Windows update has been disabled.

!) It was very hard to point out from task manger when this event occurs,  machines locks up

2) We have installed Liquidware and I would like to post some of the finding we found..

I would really appreciate if someone would  help us out

View 5.1 - Use Linked Clone as Golden Image (reversed engineering) questions...

$

Hi all,

We are using View 5.1, and have linked clones provisioned.

Now, i want to set up a new pool, parallel to the existing one, but i want to use one of the linked clones as the new golden image, since it has alot of new software installations (installed by the end user).

What i did:

- Clone an existing linked clone to a new machine;

- Renamed it, rejoined the domain.

At this point, i have a perfectly working VM, that is domain member, and responds to everything.

Now, i used this one as base for the new pool, so i:

- turned it off

- created a snapshot.

After this, i provisioned 5 new machines from this machine.

All goes well, except for 1 key thing:

They all have the same hostname, namely the one of the golden image... They all share the same computer AD account.

New AD accounts have been created, but it seems that the new clones don't get customized properly, and therefor don't receive a new hostname.

---

I know this way of reversed engineering is a bit flaky, but it will save us weeks of time, if we can reprovision like this.

Are there any tweaks / registry changes / others that i have to do on the 'new' golden image, before provisioning?

I feel it has something to do with the fact that i cloned a provisioned linked clone into a new VM...

If some1 has a better plan of approach that will work, im all ears...

Best Practices USB driver installation for non-persistent clones

$

Hello,

are there any best practices using non-persistent clones and USB driver?

Client A connects to a linked clone and connects an USB flash drive or something else.

The driver installation is horrible slow on Windows 7:

  • New device found...
  • looking for driver in driverstore...
  • installing driver software...

Tested it right now and it took more than 8mins.

After the installation the device is ready and can be used. But after logout the desktop refreshes and every driver installation has to be run again on next login. We have disabled Windows Updates and specified Do not search Windows Update for device driver locations. (Policies -> Administrative Templates -> System/ Device Installation -> Specify search order for device driver source locations).

Any clues why it is so slow installing drivers and how to prevent reinstallation of drivers every day

Thanks and best regards

Migrate view connection server with linked clone 4.5 to 5.2

$

Dear All,

Currently working with vMWare View 4.5 on 2003 R2 32 bit with linked clone on vsphere 4

Need to upgrade to vMWare view 5.2 with linked clone on vsphere 5

4.5 version is running on 32 bit server

in place upgrade is not supported as my view connection server is running 4.5 version. I should first upgrade to version 4.6 then to version 5.2.

5.2 version is only supported on 64 bit server

I should then migrate to a new connection server and migrate the pools manually ... Is it supported, feasible with linked clone pools

Any advice on this ? Workaround ?

Thanks for your help

PCoIP zero-client does not display Horizon View Client window for one (and only one) user

$

The zero-client is a Samsung NC241 via Teradici Tera 2. My user has 3 virtual desktops assigned;  current SOE with WinXP, a specific IT WinXP and a test for upcoming Win7. When I log into the View Client I am automatically connected to the WinXP for IT, by-passing the window that usually lists all available virtual PCs. This happens on all terminals I have tried. Other users, even if logging on to the same terminal, are given the option to select a virtual PC even if they only have a choice of one!

I have checked the setting for the virtual PCs in the Teradici PCoIP Management Console and also the user settings under the VMware Horizon View Administrator but cannot find where my user and desktop setups differ from the ones that work “properly”.

Is anyone able to suggest what I need to be looking for?

TIA

Hello, we use VM Ware Horizon View 5.2 in a Novell edirectory / DSfW Environment. Provisioning of linked clones failed, the process could not finished.

Virtual Machines are created in "Active Directory" and accessable (RDP) but Status in View Administrator is not ready.

Is there someone with the same environment and linked clones are up and running?

User Login - Looks as if CTRL + ALT + DEL was pressed.

Hello Everyone,

I have a strange issue I'd like to see if anyone can help me with.  Here is the scenario described as briefly as possible.  All of my users are on LG Zero Clients Monitors.  The Monitors are configured to connect to my View Connection Server.  All guest OS are Windows 7 32 Bit running View Horizon 5.2. All are linked clones from a single master. I have disabled the requirement to press CTRL+ALT+DEL in group policy.  So when they come into the office in the morning, they are presented with the Zero Clients Username and Password Screen which is then passed to Windows.  Once they log in, They are sitting on a screen that looks as if CTRL + ALT + DEL was pressed.  It's the screen that comes up when you press ctrl alt del that has a list

Lock This Computer

Log Off

Change Password

Start Task Manager

Cancel.

So they have to Hit Cancel every time they log in.  This also happens if they lock their computer and come back later.  They are presented with a clickable windows icon that contains the username of the person logged on.  They click (or hit enter) on that icon and they are then presented with the WINDOWS Username and Password Screen.  They enter their credentials and then windows opens but it opens to that same screen as if CTRL ALT DEL was pressed.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

How to I connect to a vDesktop locally, externally I can connect but not locally?

$

I have a SC, CS installed onServer 2008R2.

Externally I can connect to my vDesktops, but inside the network I can not connect to the vDsktops.

I installed on the desktop the Client w/local.

The CS server uses the same certificate as my SS.

The settings for my CS under General are:

HTTP(s) Secure Tunnel = (checkmark) https.//externaldomainname.com:443

PCoIP Secure Gateway= (checkmark) PCoIP External URL: inetrnal CSIPaddress:4172

Blast External URL: https://CSName.domain.local:8443

Under  local mode tab I have:

Use SSL for local mode operations

Use SSL when provisioning desktops in Local Mode

What settings am I missing that I can not connect to vdesktops from within the network.

When i connect using the view clinet, i enter my credentials and enter the connection server ip or url and i get certificate error.

If i use the same url from outside the newtork i connect to desktop but it is black then it disconnects.

It tells me configuring dekstop, authenticating, preparing desktop, connection to desktop, then i get a black screen with a bar on top to send:ctrl alt del, or close/disconnect dekstop, or options, connectUSB device.

then it closes the window with an eror message:

the connection to the remote computer ended.

pls advise
