VMtools and View Agent

$

Hi All,

I'm new to this community and not sure if this is the right section to post my concern. We are using VMware View for our remote users and last week I noticed on our vCenter that vdi desktops  are  giving a warning sign that VMware tools is running out of date.

I Upgraded the VMtools installed on the base image for the pool from version 8.6.5 build-621624 to version 8.6.10 and take a snapshot and initiate a recompose. After  recomposing the pool with the upgraded VMtools snapshot. I let the users try to connect but I found an issue, Remote sessions using PCOIP seems to be stuck and connection suddenly drops giving out an error "the connection to the remote computer ended". Connection works fine with RDP. So I ended up reverting the changes. So my questions are: Is their a compatibility issue with VMTools 8.6.10 and view 5.0.0. Does upgrading my VMtools also upgrade my view agent?

Thanks in Advance for any response.

all the best!

Windows 7 Template Help (i am sure this is out there somewhere)

Okay so i am having all sorts of problems with making a working windows 7 template. (THANKS MICROSOFT) So i am not sure what is wrong or what I need to do to fix this but, (see attachment) I created an unattend.xml using WAIK, I have sucessfully cloned the computer, it runs the unattend.xml file. What it does not do is Join the domain, (automatically rename VM using name given at time of clone) Right now it clones blah blah and then goes to the MS wizzard and asks what name you want then finishes the process. NOT IDEAL so i ask anybody out there to help me. I have applicatons that are starting to not support XP and I need to upgrade to 7. I run View for my desktops. So ideally i would want the rename to be based on the Pool name, ex POOLNAME-001, POOLNAME-002 etc, that works with xp, but that was easy winodws 7 and 2008 machines they messed up the sysprep. can anybody help me?

Email: ken.white@premierpress.com

I have no idea what to do please help

If someone has a working sysprep unattend.xml file that they would be willing to share that would be great. I just need it to create VM without touching it and add to domain, create a name based on pool/vm name when cloning normally.

McAfee Move 4.0 Agentless Solution Issues

Hello-

We are running Horizon View 5.2 with linked clones using the Wyse P25 endpoint solution.  For antivirus we have the McAfee Move 3.0 agentless solution deployed.  My problem is with the Move solution new log ins are taking around 1 minutes to 1 minute and 40 seconds.  If I shut off the MOVE appliances logs in complete in about 15 seconds.  Obviously a big time difference.  I have tried working with McAfee but they are useless.  Is anyone using MOVE with non persistent desktops and seeing better results?  I am tempted to move to Trend Micros Deep Security solution, but that will require a lot of work politically.

Thank you in advance,

Erik

Pagefile.sys still on C: when redirected to disposable disk

I created a linked clone persistent pool (XP) and setup profile and temp file redirection within the composer settings.  When the VM’s are built and I look at the swap file configuration I see that C: is set to “no paging file” and that the disposable disk is configured as I would expect.  However, the C: drive still has the pagefile.sys file sitting there, it doesn’t appear to be in use as I can manually delete it.  Just curious if this is the expected/intended behavior.  Any consequences on creating a build/logon script that looks for and deletes this file? Just looking to keep the VM C: as small as possible, currently 2.15GB not counting the page file.

Password Expiration Notification Not Showing in Non-Persistent Pooled Machines

Running vSphere 5.0

VMware View 5.1
Windows 7 32-bit

Wyse P25 zero clients

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit

Both persistent & non-persistent pools

I am slowly converting users from physical Dell Optiplex desktops to the VDI environment described above. I have been receiving phone calls from our virtual users that they are locked out of their sessions and it's giving them the message their password is expired. It does not give them the normal pop up bubble from Windows 7 warning them their password is going to expire in XX number of days. I recently started receiving the notice on my physical desktop so I signed into one of our floating pools and did not receive the notice. I did the rsop.msc command on the virtual desktop to review what policy parameters were successfully pushed down. The line "Interactive logon: Prompt user to change password before expiration - 14 days" was there. The only difference is that my physical computer is in a different OU with a different policy (although all policies do have that specific line). BUT one of my coworkers is assigned a dedicated virtual desktop that has all of the same policies for both the user and computer as the floating pooled machines do and he does get the notification where the floating assigned users do not. So the only difference I can see now is between the floating and dedicated pools which I don't understand how that would affect this notification other than a potential disconnect between the Windows session and the initial log in through VMware view. Has anyone else ran into this type of issue?

vShield Manager

Hello-

I am running Horizon View 5.2 with vShield Manager and vShield Endpoint 5.1.0-833297 installed.  We are using the MOVE 3.0 agentless product integrated with VMware tools and the endpoint product.  From day one I have had nothing but issues.  I am going to remove the McAfee product and try using the Trend Deep Security agentless product and have a question on the vShield Manager product.

Obviously, I am going to remove the McAfee scanning appliances from the environment, but should I also uninstall the vShield endpoint or can I just leave it and add the Trend appliances after I have removed the McAfee product.  I am a bit time constrained so if I don't need to entirely remove the vShield Manager product I would prefer to go that route.

Thank you,

Erik

I was not able to find it, but anyone know what the HD space requirement is for a broker installation?

I know the install is very small, would a 5GB non-OS drive be good enough?

Linux VMware View PCoIP client found! (finally)

Hi all -

I (finally) stumbled across a VMware View (PCoIP enabled) linux client.  You can download it here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3719101&prodNameId=3719106&swEnvOID=4030&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=vc-79094-1

It's from HP's site and is part of their T5545 update.  I downloaded the executable and extracted it to a temp folder and then SSH'd over the vmware-view-client_4.0.0-215529_i386.deb to my custom Debian build and installed it.  Then I PXE booted the new image and see that it in fact has the PCoIP and multi-head components (bonus!).

Hope this helps everyone.  Not sure why this wasn't available in the first place as competitors are more than happy to hand out their connection clients.

Warmest regards,

--Adam

Recomposing VM or pool : Refit operation resync failed

Hi everyone,

I'm having a hard time trying to recompose either an entire pool or a VM in the View Administrator.

The error I'm encountring is : "Provisioning error occurred for Machine xxxxxx : Refit operation resync failed", then the VM stops and i have to power it again via vSphere.

I tried to follow the VMware KB:     Recomposing VMware View pool fails with error: Provisioning error occurred for Machine xxxxxx:Refit opera…, but no luck. My VC_CONFIG_ID is good in my SQL databse, and no change were recently made to my pools.

I've tried to recompose from an old snapshot which used to work : same error.

I've also tried to refresh then recompose, or reboot my View Composer server... same problem.

Please find attached the composer logs for this operation, featuring a FATAL error. I dit not find anything on this error yet...

Thank you in advance for your help.

"The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied." error on windows 7 Linked Clone desktops with Persona Management

$

Hi All,

Here is our setup

- Windows 7 pool of Linked Clone floating desktops (62 desktops in the pool)

- View 5.2

- Esxi 5 hosts

- Using Persona Management for user profiles and also redirecting desktop and my documents folders into profile folder (lives on a NetApp CIFs share)

- Using ThinPrint GPO's to assign a default printer

- Using several other GPO settings that are consolidated into just a handful of objects for performance reasons

We received notice that 2 end users (out of 1,263) received the following warning when trying to log into the pool

"The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied."

We ended up making sure they were not logged in and we just renamed their profile folder on the NetApp CIFs share so their next login would re-create it... but something like this throws up the red flag for me. Any ideas as to why this may have happened?

vDGA PCoIP performance

For a demo environment I have configured a server with nVidia Quadro 4000 card, configured as vDGA (PCI passthrough) in VM. The graphical performance isn't as good as I expected, for example, the Windows 8 metro interface isn't as smooth as locally. What are the best practices, tuning tips for best (3D) user experience with vDGA? are there any PCoIP GPO settings I should or shouldn't set? Which NVidia driver should I use in the VM? Any other Windows tweaks?

I configured the following hardware and software:

DL380 Gen8

64GB RAM

2x Nvidia Quadro 4000 cards (1 for Xendesktop 7 VM and 1 for VMware View 5.2 VM)

Fusion-IO card

ESX 5.1 U1

VMware View 5.2

VM:

HW version 9

4 vCPU

8GB RAM

PCI passthrough Quadro 4000

Windows 8 x64

Nvidia drivers 320.86

I have now set the PCoIP GPO Max frame rate at 120 and enabled "disable build to lossless". It didn't help much unfortunately.

Validating View Client..

Hello fellas,

I've got a customer that wants to ThinApp their Windows View Client with custom settings for end users that are remotely accessing the environment through a Security Server gateway.  They also want to insure that remote end users are using this specific Client.  We are going to put the ThinApp Packaged client onto the View portal for download but how do we insure that the end user is using this exact package and now downloading a View Client from VMware and using that to connect??

Any suggestions?

Configuring RADIUS for two factor authentication and passing RADIUS attributes

$

I am trying to use a two factor authentication solution. I have set up Horizon View to use radius and it is working fine. A little too fine. My solution I am using allows for a IP whitelist however in order for that to happen, I need to pass RADIUS attribute 66 (tunnel endpoint). This way when my users are in the office, they will not get the second factor authentication. In the admin console I have not seen where I can specify what RADIUS attributes I can pass as part of the request. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about configuring this?

Any assistance around this would be greatly appreciated.

DNS name resolution of View desktops

$

Hi all,

We have a print server app that needs to be able to resolve the host names of our View linked clone floating desktops (to shoot down messages to the desktops....kind of like the old Microsoft Messenger service). I have the master desktop image setup to register the IP address it gets with DNS and this works the first time the pool is built. For example a desktop named W7PUBLIC1 registers W7PUBLIC1.wheatonma.edu in DNS with IP 10.0.0.1. The problem is, with subsequent rebuilds of that pool the desktops cannot re-register their new IP addresses because the machine account that registered the first time is different. For example, during a rebuild W7PUBLIC1 gets 10.0.0.2 but it can't register it because it already exists in DNS and was created by a different AD machine account.

I "think" I could configure our DHCP server to register DNS entries instead of letting the clients do it but I've never tried it. I also thought of turning on the WINS service on the print server and having the clients register with it and point the print server at it but that is super old school.... not sure if I want to go there.

We are running View 5.2

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

About deleting linked cloned

$

Hi there,

We had some issues while we were doing recompose operation with some VM's, as a workaround what we do was to detach the persistent disk from those VM's and attach them to another.

By some reason, we had to do it manually by following VMware KB: Cannot detach a Persistent Disk in View Manager 4.5 and later

And then we end up doing a salad with VM's and persistent disk, by example:

VM02 - DISK1

VM02 - DISK03

VM03 - recompose failed

Now my main doubt is, if follow the procedure describbed on VMware KB: Manually deleting linked clones or stale virtual desktop entries from VMware View Manager and Horizon Vie… (I can ensure this does the job for manually clean rebel vm's) what happen if I delete VM03? Does that means that by following the procedure I also going to delete the DISK03 now attached to VM02?

I also tried to "recreate" with another disk just to try, but then the recompose operation fails and it was trying to attach the persistent disk to another vm aslo (like vm04 - disk 095), and then since that VM04 is hanged and I wanted to follow the manual procedure I'm not sure about the persistent disk.

Any idea or suggestion?

Thanks in advance!
