Installed root certificates on WYSE P20 clients

$

Hi
We are using WYSE P20 clients in a View 4.6 environment. We  are wanting to upgrade to the latest version of VIEW and as a  prerequisite, get root certificates working on the WYSE P20.

We  are using VIEW within our internal network space only, so the best  option for us is to install on to the P20s the root certificate  generated by our MS Windows Domain Controller.

We have exported  the certificated as both a DER- and/or Base64-encoded .CER file, renamed  that file with a .PEM extention and tried to re-apply the Policy to the  P20's, but cannot make this work.

The error message we are seeing is as follows:

02/23/2013, 13:17:18> LVL:1 RC:-501 X509_UTIL validate_pem_cert): Certificate length is not divisible by 4! [len = 1]
02/23/2013, 13:17:18> LVL:1 RC:-501 X509_UTIL tera_x509_util_is_valid): PEM certificate is invalid!
02/23/2013, 13:17:18> LVL:2 RC: 0 GSOAP :SOAP 1.2 fault: SOAP-ENV:Sender [no subcode]
02/23/2013, 13:17:18> LVL:2 RC: 0 GSOAP :"rootCertificate is invalid!" Detail: [no detail]
02/23/2013, 13:17:18> LVL:0 RC: 12 MGMT_CMI :Error serving SOAP request!

Unfortunately  this is a *major* issue for us because it is actively preventing us  from upgrading VIEW. If we cannot resolve the issue, we will have no  choice other than to dump the P20's altogether and find alternative  hardware.

Can anyone advise as to whether there is a working  solution for getting "self-signed" (i.e. non-Public) Root certificates  working on these devices?

View Connection Server reporting Active Directory Web Services Error

$

I recently installed a View Connection Server 5 on a clean installation of Windows 2008 R2 and am getting the following Event Viewer error for Active Directory Web Services:

Log Name:        Active Directory Web Services
Source:         ADWS
Event ID:        1202
Task Category:  ADWS Instance Events
Level:          Error
Keywords:       Classic
User:           N/A
Computer:       vm-view-server.domain.com
Description:    This computer is now hosting the specified directory
instance, but Active Directory Web Services could not service it.  Active
Directory Web Services will retry this operation periodically.

Directory Instance:     ADAM_VMwareVDMS
Directory Instance LDAP port:   389
Directory Instance SSL port:    636

When I do a fresh install of View Connection Server 4.6, I don't get this error at all.  This problem was first noticed on my production View Connection Server 4.6 server after an upgrade to vCenter Server 5.  Generally this error is related to the server not having a proper SSL certificate and can't communicate LDAP over SSL (port 636).  The AD environment in my facility is also a CA authority, in turn requiring all LDAP communication to use SSL.

I know the production 4.6 server AND the fresh 5 connection servers are getting proper certs from the CA.  I can see the certs are installed on the systems and can see them in the CA authority snap-in on the AD server.  Also, other SSL communications on the network that use the same CA work fine.

My question is what would cause a fresh install of Windows 2008R2 and View Connection Server 5 to not communicate over SSL, but the same clone of the fresh install of WIndows 2008 R2 and View Connectio nServer 4.6 works perfectly?

This error was first notices when my users got SSL errors when launching the View Client.  I built the fresh installations for testing and discovered View Connection Server 5 is having the same issues.

NOTE:  This is on an secure network so the firewall has been completely disables on all Windows hosts.  The virus scanners were removed for testing as well.

I opened a ticket with VMware but so far no resolution and no explanation.  I've pretty much exhausted every link found on Google related to the above error.

View connection drops right after connecting with Security Server sometimes

Hello,

We are having a problem when people connect in via the Security server it connects in (Laptop/Android/iOS) and the desktop launches, then it disconnects.  If you launch  it again it works great.

This dosn't happen all the time either, just sometimes (maybe mainly on reconnects).  Any thoughts to why this is happening?

Default Printer - Thin Print / Network Printers

$

Hi,

I have been struggling with this for quite some time. I cannot get the system to balance default printers. Some info...

- View 5.1

- Linked Clone Pool - Windows 7

- Mix of users

                    - Users connecting directly to connection broker. These users have network printers with defaults set by GPO.

                    - Users connecting via security server. These users have local printers with connection/default set by thinprint.

The above is what I want but not always what I get. I often find that TP will change the default printer for the direct users... usually to PDF creator. Oddly, it only does this sometimes and not for all users.

I have tried changing registry entries in two places but neither give great results...

- Client-side. Changing the defaultstate and others in the HKCU entries to 0 to stop TP from connecting local printers. This will work on occasion but is by no means consistent and also a pain to manage. It works for the most part but then I will get the odd PC that doesn't map through local printers but still changes the default in the session.

- VD-side. Changing the reg entry for FORCEWTS in the HKLM will stop TP from changing the default without fail but also seems to break things for those coming in via the security server who want TP to work.

As of now, the only answer I can think of is seperate pools for the two user types but I would really rather not.

Any suggestions welcome. Please ask if you need more info. I hope my ramblings made sense.

View Implementation Questions

Good Morning all,

I have been tasked with putting together a design for a "net new" VMware View environment. This environment should be able to handle 75 remote users connecting concurrently over SSL VPN from any device or external location at any time. We would also like the ability to add Softphone software to the desktop image.

Can someone point me in the proper direction from an architectural standpoint? We currently are proposing the following Hardware:

HardwareQuantitySpecs
HP BL465c G74Dual 12 cores AMD Opteron @2.93ghz 98 GB RAM
HP Chassis2
EMC Vmaxnot sure of the storage requirements

  1. What would be the recommended user profile management tool?
  2. Are there any specific network requirements to consider?
  3. How do we properly size the environment? How many users per CPU core is recommended?
  4. What are the storage requirements for 50-75 VDI users?
  5. Does VMware View support Softphones within the virtual desktops?
  6. Do you recommend a dedicated vCenter for the View Environment?

Thanks In advance,

Tim

Best Practice for View 5 Setup

$

Our current host is configured as follows:

VMWare ESXi 5.0.0

2 X 2.4 GHZ Processor Sockets

6 Processors cores per socket

Logical Processors total = 24 (hyper threading enabled)

Memory = 87670 MB

We want to setup 13 View machines (i.e. Virtual Desktops).  Our base image is configured as follows:

Memory = 1024 MB

CPUS = 1

We will also be running one or two virtual servers on the same host, but the View machines are lower priority. So my quesiton is this; b/c I am only assigning them 1 CPU and 1024 MB of RAM, those machines will never consume more than those resources even though on the "Resource Allocation" Tabe the "limit - mhz" is set to "unlimited" and the "reservation - MHZ" is set to "0". Do I need to make any adjustments on the virtual machine's resources tab and set limits to the CPU and memory?

Also, what does the "share" column on the same tab refer too?

And lastly, is best practice to allocate resources to a virtual machines CPU and Memory settings if a high priorty machine (i.e. email server, web server) so it doesn't have to compete/balance those? or does it matter.

Thanks,

Greg

Troubleshooting - No machines in the Desktop Pool are responsive

In the school district I work for we have had trouble with clients getting a desktop when a high number of clients try to logon at the same time.  We get this message:

Unable to launch from Pool *poolname* for
user *username*: No machines in the Desktop Pool
are responsive

If they keep trying over and over they will all eventually get in after 5-15 minutes.  What should I look for?  I am new to this job so I don't know much about VDI and what to look for.  Please help!

View Endpoint

Hello-

I have a weird question on the endpoints (P25 Wyse) we are using for VIEW.  Is there a way for a VDI session to know the name of the endpoint it has been assigned?  We have a printing requirement that requires the VDI session to be mapped to a specific printer based on the Wyse terminal it is assigned.  If the VDI session has the ability to discover the name of the endpoint it is assigned we can run a script to map the printer.

Thanks in advance,

Erik

PXE Booting Vmware View Linux Client w/Ubuntu (Not using LTSP)

$

This topic has been thrown around in here before but I'd like to start a new discussion on the topic and describe what we do today versus where we'd like to be.

Current Situation

Today, we're re-purposing old PCs and installing WinXP with only Vmware View installed. We enable autologin and replace the default shell with the VMware View client so when the machine starts up it goes right to the VMware View login screen. Then we create an image and clone other PCs using that image. We have a different image for each different desktop model we own. Although this works well, it can be time consuming to maintain all these images and having to clone desktops.

Future Goal

We would like to PXE boot a minimal Ubuntu 11.10 installation with LXDE, autologin and autostart the VMware View client for Linux (Not the open client). This will allow us to maintain one or just a few client images right from the server and will also be able to remove the hard drives from our old desktops.

Status

  • Ubuntu Server 11.10 has been setup with DHCP, TFTP and NFS
  • Minimal ubuntu client image has been created and LXDE and Vmware View client packages have been installed.
  • The client boots up with LXDE desktop and autologin has been enabled.
  • The client boots up in less than 50 seconds

Next Steps

  • Setup autostart of VMware view client with custom parameters
  • Enable sound and USB redirection
  • Configuration for multiple displays

I plan document the steps that i followed to setup my environment once i have everything finalized. In the meantime, if anyone is working on something similar, I'd really like to hear about your experience.

Stay tuned....

vSphere for Desktop license question

$

Hi, All

My question is about license restrictions with vSphere for Desktop.

Let say, I have View Bundle lic (100 VM), and I run 100 View desktop VMs on some ESXi servers with "for Desktop" license.

I know, that I can't run servers VMs on this hosts (exept VMs View Brocker, Composer and etc) but what about VMs with desktop OS?
Can I run on this ESXi-hosts desktop VMs, not managed by View (I mean, without View Agent). For example VMs for testing pathces. Will it be EULA violation?

In all documents I see only restriction on guest OS type:

Q: Can I run other server workloads on the vSphere that is included in View?

A: No. The vSphere and vCenter components of the View bundle are restricted to desktop deployments. A desktop virtual machine is defined as a virtual machine running the following operating systems: Windows 95/98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows 7.

I get the following error in View Administrator while deploying around 1500 desktops

View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (Unknown) - Unknown -

I have looked at the logs and they point toward insufficient ports in DVS, I have confirmed that there are more that sufficient ports in the dvSwitch and the dvPortgroup.

Please help me fix this.

Here is the log snip for your reference.

View, Split DNS, and SSL Certs HELP

We have:

  1. Security Server - not on domain, has internal IP address of 10.121.125.110 and external address of 209.68.96.26
    1. SSL cert for view.victorschools.org installed
    2. DNS entry of view.victorschools.org pointing towards 209.68.96.26
  2. Broker Server - on domain, has internal IP address of 10.121.127.107
    1. SSL cert for broker.vcs.local installed
    2. DNS entry of broker.vcs.local pointing towards 10.121.125.107
    3. DNS entry of view.victorschools.org pointing towards 10.121.125.107

The problem crops up on two fronts:

  1. Teacher laptop that has the view client installed pointed towards view.victorschools.org. Internally that DNS entry points towards the broker server which has the cert of broker.vcs.local. Unless the client is setup to not check certs, connection will not work. When we try it immediately comes back with a cert mismatch error.
  2. Personal device – student loads the View client on a laptop or iPad and points it towards view.victorschools.org. It works fine at home but again will not work on campus since it is a cert mismatch

Can I just resolve this by changing a DNS entry and have view.victorschools.org point towards 10.121.125.110 which is the internal IP address of the security server? Of course this will make any student with a personal device point towards our security server whether at home or at school. I know we want internal devices to point towards the broker and external clients to point towards the security server. Here is a discussion of the same thing I am experiencing minus the SSL cert issue.

I know that windows CA can generate certs with Subject Alternative Names (SAN). Can we generate a cert from our Window CA for broker.vcs.local and view.victorschools.org and install it on the broker server to solve this?

Floating pool, persona management, default printer not remembered

I've deployed a small View 5.0 floating pool with Persona Management enabled to a few users, so far everything seems to be working just fine.

The only exception is with default printers, a looks up the network printer in the directory, adds it to their virtual machine and sets it as their default printer. Will use that VM throughout the day without any issue, but when they log off and log back in the following day, the default printer is not remembered.

The printers are re-added, just the default printer is not right. It always reverts to the "Microsoft XPS Writer".

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

TPAutoconnect.exe Application Error

Since moving to View 5.1 we now see random occurences of this message box error when we reconnect to disconnected View sessions. Has anyone else experienced this? We have raised a call with VMware but they seem to be struggling to find the cause.

Thanks in advance

Large Pools in View 5.2

All the prelim documentation says there is support for "large pools" in View 5.2 but I cant seem to find what "large" means. Andre over at myvirtualcloud.net says here the pool limit of 1000 has not changed. Is this correct?
