What do you want in a vCheck for Horizon View?

$

I have been coding for a couple of weeks already at creating plugins for a vCheck for Horizon View. I have a couple already build and those can be found (maybe after Alan commits my last pull request) at GitHub - vCheckReport/vCheck-HorizonView: vCheck for Horizon View  I am making some progress but can't do this without help from everyone in here. What I am looking for is ideas on plugins to create (I have some already mentioned on my blogpost) and maybe even people that would like to create some checks themselves. If you are not sure on how to get started with making plugins just send me a message in here or via Twitter (Magneet_NL) and I'll try to get you started.

tldr:

- Started creating Horizon View vCheck

- Need more ideas

- help is always welcome

Composer Bottlenecking

$

We have come across an issue where one of our VDI environments experiences a pretty severe case of bottlenecking when running  a large recompose task. We have pretty much isolated it down to a single composer server/database instance, but, we're unsure of where to look now.

In a nutshell what happens is, say we kick off a recompose of 560 VMs. For the first 20 minutes it seems to run fine. I'd say it does about 200 VMs in those 20 minutes. After that though, we see maybe 40 done over the next 10, then perhaps 5, then maybe just 1 or 2. In a test we ran, it took 5 hours for 560 VMs to recompose, but in another block where we have a separate composer server/DB instance, the same task (same type of VM pool) will finish in ~ 45 minutes.

Block 1 goes to an isolated Composer server, ViewCPSR1. Block 2 goes to its own as well, ViewCPSR2. Each of those servers connects to a SQL server, ViewSQL1, and on that, there is a DB for Block1 Composer, and a DB for Block2 Composer.

Both Composer servers are identical in resources, they both live on the same vCenter/distributed switch, go to the same back end storage, etc. They each provide Composer services for a unique vCenter. In the vCenter where the problem exists, we thought we had spotted the issue, as Block1 had a high usage of CPU for the vmware-invsvc constantly, even when not running a task like a recompose. However, we threw a few more CPUs at the vCenter, the spike went away, yet the recompose bottleneck continued.

One oddity we found: deleting the 560 VMs outright and letting them re-create, seems to run much smoother. The recompose though, it's brutal.

We opened a ticket with support, but, wanted to see if anyone else has seen anything similar.

Thanks in advance.

RDS Host running on Windows 2012 is crashing while establishing multiple connections

I am trying to connect to RDS host. So If I connect only through single user, I face no issue.

But if I try to establish multiple connection, within few seconds my host crashes.

I have created this VM using view RDS farm and then added it to pool.

From the vmware.log, it shows following panic :

Client Drive Redirection not working

Hi,

Horizon 7.1 with Windows 7 linked clones, agent has CDR feature installed.

Pool is running with MMR policy enabled.

Client side running Windows 7 with Horizon Client 4.5.

Port 9427 is not being blocked.

When I connect to the desktop pool, I am NOT prompted to enable CDR.

I cannot find a menu entry on the Horizon Client that would allow connecting of a share, etc.

Any ideas? I have no idea where to start looking for this as all documentation seems to say "Ensure Agent has feature installed, MMR enabled and port open".

Thanks

Agent Unreachable Status for VDI Clients

Hey guys,

We have an automated pool of 150 desktops which get refreshed on logoff OR after being disconnected for >60 minutes. I've noticed that we have been gradually getting more and more "Agent Unreachable" status's for our VDI desktops over a period of 4 - 6 hours until I go in, remove the VM's from disk and let provisioning re-provision the VM's to reset them. Doing a desktop reset does not fix the issue. I have made sure that the VM's are receiving IP addresses from DHCP and they are. We are not running out of addresses since these 150 desktops have 250 IP addresses in the DHCP scope with 15 minute lease times.

We are running VMware View 5.2. If any more information is needed, just ask.

After installing the client I log in via SMS on our institute website  and click on Follow Desktop ,and get .

Failed to open URI "vmware-view://our.server.com:443/cn%3D3465e0fc-08ba-4bf2-adc9-139b91c4dd37%2Cou%3Dentitlements%2Cdc%3Dvdiglobal%2Cdc%3Dvmware%2Cdc%3Dint?SAMLart=OTlhNGNiYTU5OWVlYTVjZWU2MzQzZDI3ZTI4MDEyNzAAAAAA".

The vmware-view   can be started from  command line meaning it is there  ... but  i do not know how to replicate information that is in the weblink LINK.

I see one more Linux user with simmialr  issue  : https://communities.vmware.com/message/2585831#2585831  .

Any advice ?

Hi!

I have been working around with Windows 10 LTSB for a while, and i do meet som hairpulling frustrating issues.

We are using Mandatory profile.

Linked Clones

AppVols 2.12.1.103

VMWare UEM 9.1

"Delete or refresh machine on logoff: Refresh immediately"

Protocol: PCoIP or BLAST

1. Logontime

During logon, windows wait for a lot of stuff!

Waiting for SVSERVICE(appvols)(5-10 sec), Userprofile service(3-6 sec), Activating policy VmWare UEM flexengine (5-7 sec), preparing windows(15-25 seconds)

2. Start Menu

When click on starmenu it takes like 3-6 seconds before it opens the first time, after that it takes between 1-2 seconds before it opens, and it is too slow!

Funny thing is, when i installed Nvidia Grid on the same golden, and deploy it with this, it works just the way it should!

Cannot logoff while Windows session is locked

Hi,

I have thought this was by design since I cant find any information about this.

But this is there a workaround so that the View client can still logoff user even if the session is locked?

The only way to logoff for the user is to unlock Windows and logoff from View client menu.

We use Windows 8.1 with VMware View 5.3.1.

Linked-clones non-persistent pool

Windows Server 2012 R2

NB: We have removed the logoff button in Windows because we want only one way(from View client) for users logoff to keep simplicity.

Horizon 7 Instant Clones get trust relationship issue after Recover process

$

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else getting an error when they recover their instant clones related to AD trust relationship of the instant clones machines.

Full message:

The SAM database on the Windows Server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.

The objects are located in AD and seem to be fine. And the initial deployment of the desktop pool works fine. It is just when I go to recover them that all of the desktops fail.

Additional Information:

1 AppVolume AppStack mounted (ver 2.11)

1 AppVolume Writable mounted no profile template

Hi,

We experience disturbers issue with user roaming profile,

After I recompose a pool , always there are  few users (randomly) that their profile is not upload to the new desktop, they get a clean default desktop,

and not all the GPO defines is working.

Sometimes it solved by log off an logon again, but always I have a user that I need to configure his profile from the beginning, the outlook software opened like a new application.

Is someone has advice or experience this issues too?

Hi All,

Linjo

Currently I am using 300 licences for VDI and I have another licence key for 500 user, now how can I add new key in View? because I have to support 800 users at a time.

I have to add both licence keys to view [300 and 500 licences key]

How many individual keys we can add in view?

The SAM database on the windows server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.

Getting this error on two users out of 20 who access an instant clone pool.  Does the MS hotfix need to be applied to the thick client for this error to go away?? Odd part about this is that it only happens to that pool and those users.  I was running on version 7.0.2 of the agent so i thought i might try 7.0.3.  Any comments or suggestions are welcome.  Thanks

Perry

Only some users are getting this error when connecting from external networks. We have an F5 that load balances the two security servers. The same cert that is being used for the F5 URL is loaded on the security servers. We have verified other users are connecting to each security server without getting this error. What could this be? It has to be something on the client side.

View Agent 7 not using applying changes from snapshot

$

So here is the issue:

At the time of creating a new pool in view agent with my latest snapshot, the changes are not being made once i log in with a domain account. Icons from the desktop disappear and registry changes do not pick up. At the master VM level, all changes have been applied and saved.

The biggest issue is with Skype for business and OneNote, when logging in to the pool as domain user, the default email address in SFB shows someone else, where it should be blank, since its a completely new profile. I found a bunch of registry keys that were referring to this person, in the master VM, however, even after clearing all these, the person still comes up.

With OneNote, when opening for the first time as domain user in the pool, a notebook with the user name comes up, even after it was deleted from the source(share point and one drive)

This only seems to happen after creating the pool, the master VM is completely clean, unless there is something im missing?

latest I've done:

  • Removing office completely and reinstalling, recomposed the pool after.
  • Deleted the pool and recreated it.

Horizon 7.2 - Change vGPU Profile on instant clone pool?

$

I have a lab environment with a GRID card in it.  I changed the vGPU profile on the parent image, and wish to push a new snapshot to the pool.  In Horizon 7.1, I was able to change the vGPU profile in View under the vCenter Settings tab, but now that it's automatically detected from the original parent image snapshot in 7.2, it seems my only option is to delete and re-create the entire pool.  The new snapshot doesn't show up when I try to push image, and if I click the show all images checkbox, I can see it with the error "Snapshot NVIDIA GRID GPU is different from the one configured on the pool."  I would hope there is a way around this that didn't require rebuilding the pool, but will deal with it for now.

I'm trying to figure out how to entile user to a desktop pool user powercli to get around a bug I'm experiancing. I've got this far

Get-Module -ListAvailable *Vmware* | Import-Module

$hvserver=Connect-HVServer -Server euc-conn-wd01.ur.rochester.edu -User 'euc_automation_svc' -Password 'Password123!' -Domain 'UR'

$viewAPI=$hvserver.ExtensionData

$desktop_service_helper = New-Object VMware.Hv.DesktopService

$userEntitlementService = New-Object VMware.Hv.UserEntitlementService

$userEntitlementService.UserEntitlement_Create

I am just not grasping the api enough to proceed any farther. The api reference says

NAMETYPEDESCRIPTION
_thisManagedObjectReferenceA reference to the UserEntitlement used to make the method call.
baseUserEntitlementBase

attributes needed to add a user entitlement

View API - VMware API Explorer - VMware {code}

I'm trying to figure out how to add user@domain to desktop_pool_a. I'm pretty sure I need to look up the id for the desktop pool id.
