We currently have 60 machines running RHEL 5.8 we wish to virtualize, we have an existing vcenter server running some RHEL 5.8 workstations now.

We would like to use zero clients (PCoIP), nvidia's grid K2 boards, and host RHEL on the zero clients.

Does vmware view support RHEL 5.8 on a zero client.

Hi,

We're running view 5.2 via PCoIP, everything with the virtual desktops runs great, however when we start viewing the internet or watching anything on YouTube even @ 380p it's very slow and all jerky, does anyone know where i can find performance datasheets on this and how to improve the performance?

View 5.2 Desktop status stops at "startup"

Dear All,

I have installed View 5.2 newly to implement in production environment currently running with View 5.1. In View 5.2 whenever I create new desktop pool (Linked clones as well as Full clones) after provisioning some of the desktops status will stay at "startup" stage. This I observed from the beginning. Created new master image following best practices (adding vmxnet3 vNic). still the problem exists. This system need to move production in few days. I’m grateful if anyone can help to solve this issue.

Thanks..

VDI solution or suggestions for lab infrastructure

Hello,

Just recently took a job at a University where I will be over seeing (supporting) all the student labs. Currently there are about 375+ thick clients that run Windows XP (stop lauging). The current process is a little archiac. They use BartPE which then boots into Symantec GHOST to re-image the workstations. Microsoft GPO is used to push software updates out at the moment.

I would like to put together a TCO to see if VMware View could be a solution, but I have been reading about the new release of 'Mirage' - which sounds very interesting as it takes into account both virtual and physical platforms.

Just want to see if there is anyone else there that run similar solutions and if it is worth travelling down the VDI path without of course breaking the bank or budget. Ideally if something can be successfully planned we could think about rolling it out to the school's admin staff - which would be the ideal goal.

Thanx

Hi All,

I am trying to configure a Horizon View environment for external connectivity. I need your help in making sure I am doing it correct.

Do I need two Network adapters in the Security server? One in DMZ network(192.168.1.x) and one in Internal Network(192.168.2.x)?

Public IP - Provided by ISP

Public FQDN - myview.company.com

Security Server - 192.168.1.100 Hostname:viewss

Connection Server - 192.168.2.100 Internal CS FQDN: viewcs.company.local

While Installing Security Server I am filling in the fields as below;

Paired Connection server FQDN: viewcs.company.local

VMware Security Server Configurations:

         External Url: Https://myview.company.com:443

         PCoIP External url: Public IP

In view View Connection Server Configurations;

         External Url: Https://myview.company.com:443

         PCoIP External url: Public IP

Is the above correct?

Ports to be opened: 443 and 4172? Is there any other ports to be opened like 80?

Please guide me in this process and thanks a lot for your help.

A better way of session logging, with view client information

$

Want to have a better log of your View session compared to the View Event Log? You can :-)

I just released a test engine of my new version of vAudit for View 5.x.

The engine monitors the VMware view event log. When it sees when a new connection to a desktop is made, it will use WMI to remotely read out the view client information like client IP, protocol used and Device type (mac, win, ios, etc). As the program uses remote WMI, no extra client software is needed inside the desktop VMs. This information is then stored in a new sessionlog table (automatically created in the view event server database).

When a session disconnect/logoff is detected, vAudit finds the matching record of the login and will update this with the logoff/disconnect information (time and the way the session ended, status 2 is disconnect and status 3 is logoff).

The result… A very simple and easy readable log file, where each entry is all the information of the session; login time, logoff time, client information, pool id, desktop id, etc

Want to test it out (and provide me with feedback): http://www.run-virtual.com/?p=972

Multiple Pools on a Single VMFS Datastore?

$

Where tiered storage or SSDs are not available, am I right to assume that best practices for linked clone pool placement on vmfs datastores is 1 Pool = 1 VMFS datastore?

Is there a situation where placing two smaller (10 concurrent users and machines) floating linked clone pools on a single VMFS datastore is acceptable?

I understand the recommended maximum is 64-128 linked clones per VMFS datastore, but I guess this maximum assumes you only have one replica disk on the datastore?

Is there a situation where two or more small pools on a single datastore could be acceptable?  Based on the '64 linked clone' datastore limit, could you for example, happily place 6 linked clone pools with 10 machines without breaking best practice?

Issue, to save someone else the discovery process--View Connection server replication --can't refresh or recompose

$

If one of the servers in a view connection server replicated environment lose the ability to communicate with the other servers for more than a couple of hours then the view loses the ability to refresh/recompose the pools.

Solutions:

Try restarting the connection server service or restarting the server that had the communication issue.  If that does not work bounce all of the replicated servers as well.  You may also have to restart View Composer Service on your Virtual Center Server aftwards. If the View Composer Service locks up while trying to restart it you will need to reboot your Virtual Center Server.

View and the host Screen Saver - fight!

$

We're having a problem with View (version 5.2, client version 5.3) in that the host machine is running a screen saver, and we don't have on the virtual desktop.  If the VM is left unattended for the timeout limit, the screen saver on the host machine starts, but the View desktop fights to remain on the screen and in focus. You can see a very quick blip of the screen saver right at the timeout. What's driving the users nuts is trying to type after this event is nearly impossible because View and something on the host machine are fighting for focus.

I would hope that a host screen saver would simply cover View, and go away when anything was touched, returning focus to View.  Our physical machine screen savers are set with a GPO, so users can't even manually disable it before launching View.  Granted, when the keyboard entry is acting up, all the users need to do is minimize the desktop, which ends the local screen saver, and reopen.  But for some of the users, they're having to do this dozens of times a day, and I can see how it's very frustrating.

So, without disabling all host screensavers, nor changing the behavior of the users, is there a way to make View play nicer?

Does anyone know if I can run Redhat 5 on a Dell Wyse Zero client? Assuming vmware view is the software managing the redhat image. This is not a thin client and I do not believe the view client gets intalled on the zero clients.

View Migration Help

$

I'm in the process of upgrading/migrating a vsphere 4.x to vsphere 5.1 along with the view environment. My quesiton is, in what order have people found it easiest to complete the task?

Current setup

2 - esxi 4.x hosts (not migrating)

1 - vcenter 4.x (not staying)

1 - view broker

1 - security server

1 - composer (installed on physical vcenter which is not staying)

New environment

4 - esxi host

1 - vcenter 5.1

In which order have you found it best to migrate?

1. Install composer on new vcenter

2. Shut down and migrate broker then upgrade

3. Shut down and migrate security server then upgrade

4. Migrate all the desktops

Or is there a better way to accomplish this?

Thanks!

How to increase graphical performance of view desktops

$

We are starting deployment of Win7 enterprise virtual desktops in our organization using 23" LG all in 1 zero clients (pcoip).  They are running at 1920 x 1080 native resolution.  We have 20 VM's running right now on 3 esxi servers (192GB ram, dual 6 core xeon processors). The server hardware is barely being taxed at all. storage is on ibm v7000 FC san with SSD drives.  This is a very robust setup which can run many more than the 20 VMs we are running. VMs have 2gb ram and 2vcpu.

The problem we are having is graphical performance is pretty bad.  Windows are slow when resizing/dragging, video playback is choppy, scrolling in internet explorer stutters and we have one particular application that lags tremendously when switching menus.

We've noticed that if we set the zero clients to a lower (non-native) resolution of 1024x768, then the performance increases greatly and is comparable to a physical workstation.

Why is this?  Does vmware view (5.1) really not work well with these larger monitors and higher resolutions?  Would graphics offload cards help at all?  Im struggling to find where exactly the problem is and how it is best resolved.  I've looked at the teradici apex cards but from what I have read, it doesnt sound like they give better performance so much as take the burden off the server CPU which is definitely not a problem at this point.  Server CPUs are barely above 5%.

Laggy windows with P20 / P25

Hi!

I have an environment that is running good. but I have one anoying problem, and that is when dragging a window across the screen the pointer moves and then the window, (choppy and so)

however, when running the same desktop with a software View Client everything is smooth!

how is that? Shouldn't the P20 / P25 be better ?

I wish I could explain it better, but hopefully someone has a solution....

Persona Management - Redirected Desktop Folder

$

Has anyone seen where the redirected Desktop folder loses all of its NTFS permissions? I am using Persona Mgmt for profiles and also redirecting just the Desktop Folder to a "desktop" folder within the users home folders. This is worked well up until recently where every user's Desktop folder lost its permissions. Another part is that it was only users that use link clones. Full Clone users were not affected. The persona profile was not affected.

I have worked through and reset the permissions on the redirected desktops so I am ok for now. Just wanted to raise this issue in case someone else has seen it. I am using View 5.2 currently.

Thanks

Zero Clients Won't Set Correct Primary Display

$

When setting up new Zero clients, it has been noticed that when you change the primary display in the zero client user settings under display topology, it changes the primary display for the menus before you login to View but the primary monitor reverts back to the Zero client after logging in (start bar will always be on the Zero client screen).

The only workaround at this point is to use the zero client as the primary monitor.

According to the following this is a known issue: http://techsupport.teradici.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=1090&hitOffset=1285+1247+1018&docID=952

"The OSD Display Topology's Primary Port setting is ignored while in session with a VM."

We are seeing this issue on all of our Samsung Zero clients (Tera1 & Tera2).

OS: Windows 7 x64
View 5.1.2
Zero Clients: Samsung NC241-T (4.0.3 Firmware), Samsung NC190-T (4.0.2 Firmware), and Samsung NC240 (4.0.2 Firmware)

I opened up ticket #15134-12615 with Teradici and they said this:

"We've been investigating this issue and are working on determining if this will be included in an upcoming View release. It may be possible to address this in a workaround in zero client firmware. However, if we can confirm a fix is coming in a future release of View, this is a preferable approach as there is a possibility a firmware workaround may cause other issues in the future.

The issue is in the View release, not firmware. However, if we reach a point where we are not confident in VMware including this fix in an upcoming release, we will consider the less-than-ideal firmware workaround. We agree this is an issue that needs to be resolved."

I opened up ticket #13317255004 with VMware and they don't seem to be aware of this issue nor do they think it's an issue with View.  I am going to upload some logs, but posting this here to see if anyone else is running into this.

View 5.2 - Composer Install getting errors

$

This is a new install of the View Composer on a 2008 R2 x64 server.

I already created a SQL DB and have my creds ready and works.

I installed the SQLNCLI drivers.

I get to the create ODBC DSN Setup point and when I click on it I get the following error:

Setup failed to execute the ODBC Administrator : 'odbcad32.exe'.

So I manually created the local system DSN. Continued entering the DSN info in the Composer installs dialogue box and continue on.

It does it's thing then it suddenly rolls backe and I get the attached error.

What gives?

So I found the KB1035727 so I deleted the local system DSN and created as per the KB 1035727.

Same thing

So I installed the SQLNCLI and used that.

Same thing

The Server meets all the requirements per page 10 of the following document...

http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/horizon-view-52-installation.pdf

Any ideas?

This is proof of concept.

Thanks
