Updating then copying Master Gold Images

$

I do not have much VM Ware experience but I am looking for the following information. I have a Master Gold VDI that I initially will do a full copy to a classroom. At some point, I want to update the Master Image (Windows Updates, A/V, etc.) and then push the updated image to the classroom over a WAN. My question is this, can I push just the changes or do I have to re-push the entire new, updated Master Image? The training class images will not be modified during use so no issue with wiping out any user changes

Issue with PCoIP with VMware View Client with Local Mode on Win XP

I recently installed VMware View Client with Local Mode (4.6.0 build-366101) on Host OS Version:  XP 5.1.2600 and I am having a problem using the default connecton protocol of PCoIP.  When I connect to my VM (allocated to me), I seem to connect with a black screen, and then I get a pop-up with the message "the connection to the remote computer timed out".

I've found FAQs that show what ports should be open, but I don't know how to tell if we have customized the ports.  I've run telnet tests from laptop (on a VPN) versus my local workstation (non-VPN) and I have found one port that is open on the local LAN (32111) that is not open on VPN.

We have a view "server" (?) on view.domain that I go to with my web browser, and it kicks of a client connection.  I chose to install the client with local mode.

The real question here is where are the custom configuration files on the view client that show me exactly what ports are being used?  Should those ports be open to the VM hostname/IP I have, or to a different server.  Sorry for all of the very basic questions.  My IT department is not helpful.  Thanks.

VMware View 5.0 with Juniper Network Connect GINA

Hi Guys,

I'm currently working on a deployment that is to utilise the Juniper Network Connect GINA. Just wonder whether anyone has done the same?

Not having great success so far. Officially the Juniper Network Connect GINA doesn't support the VMware View GINA but not many out are officially supported.

I don't want to influence your thought process so in this initial post I won't go into full details of what I've tried so far. For reference though I have read various KB articles and the section in the View admin guide about GINA.

Just throwing it out there for ideas/inspiration.

Thanks,

VMware View and ESXi HA

I'm going to deploy VMware View for 250 VM.

As I understand I must purchase 250 licenses for vSphere Desktop but I don't understand how does it look with HA for ESXi hosts.

I would like to have 5 ESXi hosts and on each 50 VM. Do I have to buy 5 licenses for vSphere, do vSphere license for Desktop allows me to install unlimited number hosts for VDI?

Do I also have to have additional ESXi host for Windows 2008 with View Connection Server, can I install Connection Server on one of the 5 hosts according to vSphere for Desktop.

Internet & Internal Access to View

Am sure someone must have come across this before but I have been scratching my head a lot over it.

We are wanting to allow users connect to View through a Security server via Internet IP and also via the Connection Broker.

But when I have the Security Server configured, ie HTTP(S) Secure Tunnel, PCoIP Secure Gateway & Blast Secure Gateway, filled out on the Connection Broker when we try and access via the internal IP I get an error "The View Connection Server authentication failed. Could not connect through proxy server 'x.x.x.x' to server https://x.x.x.x:443."

Is there any way to get View Client to just use internal IP without trying to connect to the external IP?

Cheers if anyone can help!!

PCoIP and Windows 7: Screen lock and unlock questions

$

We have a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit VM, running over PCoIP to a zero client.  Everything works great (except for no Aero  ).  The VM is on a domain.

One thing I noticed is when I lock my screen, there is a ~5 second delay until it locks (by either WIN + L, or (Ctrl + Alt + Del ) +Enter).  I expect a few users to complain for a few weeks until they accept it.  This is minor, but does anyone know a way to fix this?

Another issue that will generate more complaints is in unlocking the screen.  For the user to unlock the screen, they press Ctrl + Alt + Del, then they have to click on their user name (an icon with localdoman/userID as the user name), then type in their password.  In a physical envirometnt, they don't have to click on their user name after Ctrl + Alt + Del.  The problem does not exist in client mode, only PCoIP.  Why does it do this?  How can this be fixed?

We are running View 4.5 with the VM on ESXi 4.0.

Thanks!

Load balancer with View 5.1

Hey all,

I've got a question about getting our load balancer up and running in our View 5.1 environment.  I've followed KB article 2020913 to get our view servers up and running with SSL certificates.  I'm in the process of getting our load balancer set up and I keep getting SSL certificate errors.  Here's a breif summary of our setup.  I've got two View connection servers (VCS1 and VCS2) with SSL certificates from our internal Certificate Authority.  Then there is our load balancer.  When you use the VMware View Client and go to the load balancer's address view.company.com, I get "The hose name in the certificate is invalid or does not match".  I click on "Show certificate" and it's showing the certificate from one of the two View connection servers.  Did I mess something up with the setup, or am I missing an obvious solution?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

State error (9): Failed to relocate disposable (waited 0 seconds)

I am getting this error on several Vm's in the VIEW 5 environment.  I read the following KB from VMware and did exactly what it says and it seemed to help for a while but the error is back.  Weird thing is the error only appears if the user logs off of the VM.  I have figured out that the only way to fix it is to perform a refresh on the VM.

The following is what we have setup in the environment.  Any one have any ideas what to do to take care of this?

Hi,

we've a test lab testing out VMware Horizon view on a test enviroment however we're seeing the following issues,

when we connect via vmware view client enter the username details then select on the desktop we're seeing the following two errors:

it tries to connect to the desktop then we get a black screen and then a prompt that says the the connection to the remote computer ended.

The other error we get is "the display protocol for this desktop is currently not available, then if we click try again we get the black screen then same error message the connection to the remote computer ended.

if we select RDP this works.

this setup is setup in the following way:

                                            (hardware f/w)                                      (Win7) (Windows Firewall)

Vmware client application >>> Firewall >>>> connection server >>>> virtual desktop

Hardware firewall has ports 443 forwarded to connection server

Hardware firewall has ports 4172 open from connection server to virtual desktop

virtual desktop has ports 4172 open from virtual desktop to connection server

am i missing anything?

What we're finding with RDP is that it's poor performance on YouTube and viewing the web

Migration 5.1.1 High Cpu

Since migrating to a newly built cluster running ESXi 5.1 build 838463 and View 5.1.1 build-799444 we experience high cpu utilization on the esx side.  It appears to be related to PCoIP because if I expand the cpu process in esxtop the vmx-svga process ID sits at a constant 20% cpu.  There is nothing going on inside the VM at that time as we were able to duplicate it by just logging into a vm and letting the session sit there.  Once the session is disconnected and logged back into the cpu seems to consistently return to normal for that process.  SVGA driver in use is the version that is installed with the agent not the vmtools, we have removed and re-installed the tools and agent per KB articles, it is very random as not all vms experience this at the same time.

HP t510 Thin Client with VMware Horizon View 5.2 Multimonitors

$

Hi all!

So, this question is about Multi-monitors. It's straight-forward enough to configure 2 monitors for use in a View Horizon pool, but I have found problems in the use of this when connecting to your VM through a t510 HP client.

Look at the screenshot below of connecting from a View 5.2 client on a Desktop PC with 2 monitors: (see view-1.jpg).

Now, with the latest HP t510 image from HP (Z6X42019.dd.gz) and all of the relevant settings set up in the profile.xml file (HP delivers all settings on an IIS server and pushes the xml file and image to all new clients on a network) -you get no option for Multimonitors even though the thin client has two monitors connected when you  are about to connect to a VM, (see image view-2.jpg).

So my question is I am led to believe that this is a t510 HP setting/config and nothing to do with VMware? I do note the following:

HP t510 VMware client version is 5.0.0 (i.e. not the actual VMware View Horizon latest version).

What are peoples thoughts on this?

Many thanks,

Athemiya

Agent unreachable

Hi,

I got some problem with view 4.5

I made linked clones using view composer.

And when I logged in the agent machine, it looks fine.

but after leaving the agent machine for 30 mins without touch, I tried to login that server, I got this error  “This desktop currently has no desktop sources available. Please try connecting to the desktop again later"

and then I checked Events on VMware View Aministrator. It said that "Agent unreachable"

I ping the server, it worked.

So, I joined the ESX server to see the agent machine. When I looked the console of the agent machine, It was like stuck.

After rebooting the agent machine, It worked fine.

But after leaving the agent mahcine for 30 mins without touch , the problem happened again.

I don't know why.

I am using below enviroment.

Windows Server 2008 as AD

Windows XP SP3 as Parents machine's snapshot : installed the file ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944043/en-us ), joined the domain.

View 5.2 Agent fails :(

Currently running View 5.1. Started updating the agents in all of our linked-clone pools to 5.2. First 8 pools worked without issue, number 9 however isn't working at all. After installing the 5.2 agent, recomposing the machines, when the user logs on (PCoIP) they get a black screen for a few seconds and then they get the remote client ended the session. RDP connections work fine. If I rollback to the 5.1 agent, works fine.

Agent Log files show some errors.

0:25:39 0x000009f0 WARNING Failed to get the message server configuration. Error code 0x80070002.

10:51:09 0x00000a6c ERROR Failed to retrieve the environment for user <domain>\<username>. Error code 0x800703fa.

Any ideas? My apologies if I'm posting in the wrong area.

Thanks all!

View Vcenter crashed-Proper method to get back up and running

$

Hi,

My View Vcenter VM bluescreened after patching, and cannot be recovered.  I do have SQL backups of the vcenter DB though.  But my question would be on best practices when going about restoring the View Vcenter server and making a seemless recovery:

1.  Do I need to worry about restoring View Manager at all?  Nothing has been done within View Manager since Vcenter crashed.

2.  Do I need to create a new VM with the same name and same IP as the original Vcenter server?  I know you don't have to, but is it "best practice" to do so?

3.  This is for View 5.2 FP1 running on ESXi 5.0, Vcenter 5.0

Is there a sepcific KB article that outlines these steps that are specific to View?

Thanks,

Mooge

Need to disconnect from session, but not lock screen

Users reporting only 2/3 of monitor shown and rest black

$

I have some users that are reporting to me that when they return from a break / meeting that only about 2/3 of their monitor is showing the VM.  If they have dual monitors the secondary monitor is all black and their VM is shrunk down to 2/3's of the other monitor.  This started when we migrated them from 4.6 to 5.1.2 and reimaged their WYSE device to a different image with the 4.6 VIEW client.  We are having to use the 4.6 client because there are too many issues with the 5 clients that WYSE is offering.  This is not happening to everyone and for some it has taken about a week for it to happen.  Below are some of the things that I could think of that might be causing this but I wanted some other suggestions and what to try to take care of this.

  • VM tools and agent were upgraded.  The agent version installed is 5.1.1 because of some issues heard with 5.1.2
  • Enable 3D support has been enabled
  • I selected 4 monitors with the highest resolution available and set the Video Card to "Auto-Detect settings" instead of using a custom setting
  • Again, the client on the thin client is 4.6 and they are connecting to the 5 environment

Any ideas what is going on here?  Thank you in advance for your help!

VM reboots. Leaves Domain

$

Hi all,

I've got a VM setup for adding to a new pool. When deploying to the pool the PC doesnt join the domain, but puts itself in a workgroup of the same name. If I create a VM from the same template using the same customisation, it works and joins the domain but then reboots applies settings, and then is back in a workgroup.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Steve.
