Smart card access to View Administration webpage

Need some help....

We have two Horizon View environments.5.3.5 and 6.2.2 experiencing the same behavior.

We have enabled smart card authentication for the Horizon client and VDI desktops. This all works great. We get prompted for our PIN and life is good everything works as expected.  However we enabled smart card auth for the Administration webpage and that is not working.

When I go to https://FQDN/admin we get prompted to select a certificate...great! I click on my cert and enter my PIN. It then thinks for a second and appears like its going to log me into the admin web page but then the screen flickers and dumps me back to the logon page. We have tried IE, Firefox and Chrome and none work. I looked in the logs of the connection server but nothing is jumping out at me.

Any thoughts? Our company is going to enforce smart card use so its imperative we get this working. I'm pretty sure we have all the certs in place in the keystore as like I said smart card works fine to access the Horizon client and VDI desktops. I just don't understand why the admin web page prompts for the card + PIN but never logs me in and dumps me back to the logon page.

Thoughts?

Horizon View pool with other/physical machine and Mac client

Hi,

I have tried all the latest agent/client etc.  I can't, as the title says, get a mac to connect to a windows physical machine in a pool.  Windows clients are working fine.

This is a short term 3 month project office remodel where people need to access their machines all running in a little room in the office that is being remodeled.  Its a small office and we don't have a vpn concentrator and going through another office and then to ours is tpo slow, so this is a good solution - for windows users. Users trying to use their macs to connect to their windows desktop in the office are not able to.  It appears to connect as the windows physical logs the user off, and then it looks like the Mac tries to open an RDP session to 127.0.0,1:xxxx  and then another window pops up asking for logon details, put the password in and it says the remote computer has disconnected... the physical goes back to the logon screen.

So... just wondering if this is supposed to work?  I have said to use RDP on the pool setup and I tried most settings yesterday, but if anyone has got this to work I could use some advice I guess.

Thanks

Bill

Reuse platform services controllers for view vcenter

We are having some internal discussions on how best to deploy View in our environment. Our current configuration is two datacenters, each location has it's own SSO site with two PSC shaing the same SSO domain. Each location also has it's own vCenter connected to the two local PSC's via a load balancer. We are now looking to add VDI at our primary data center location. The question we have is if we can reuse the existing PSC servers at this location and just deploy its own vCenter server or if the vCenter should have it's own set of PSCs?

We can't find any documentation to support either configuration. We do know that it is recommended that View have it's own vCenter, but does that mean we can't share the same SSO site and SSO domain as the "server" vCenter?

View 7 and USB redirection, is it working for you?

We are a K-12 school district and in mid July we upgraded from View 6.2.1 to View 7.0.1. This past week we started getting help tickets about USB redirection not working. I opened a support case with VMWare and after working for quite some time we did not come up with a solution. Today I uninstalled the View 7.0.1 agent and installed the View 6.2.1 agent. After recomposing, USB redirection now works.

Do you have any experience with View 7 and USB redirection?

I did notice that View 7.0.2 was released yesterday. Is there a possibility this might fix this issue?

View 7.0.2 RDSH Farm - no customization

Hello everyone,

maybe someone of the experts here can help me in finding a possible solution.

I did install a complete new View 7.0.2 environment including 4 Servers - one for each role (Security, Connection, DB and Composer).

Ports on Firewalls have been set.

I can create a new RDSH automated Farm and VMs are being deployed by the composer.

The thing is, that none of them are being customized due to the NICs (vmxnet3) inside the replica are not connected (neither "connected" nor "connect at power on" is checked)

The Master Image is working fine.

What I already did:

- remove vm from inventory and re-added it

- built the vm from scratch

- disabled DirectPath I/O on nic

- disabled DRS

- make sure DHCP is enabled and working as it should be (ipconfig /release on the Master also performed)

- static binding as well as ephemeral

The strange thing is, it only affects RDSH VMs - a test with a Windows7 Pool was behaving as expected.

Did someone here experience the same issues? I am glad for any help / hint I might get as time is running and my customers need the new environment ...

View is installed in vSAN Enironment managed through latest VCSA (6.0U2) and connected to second Datacenter using dVS where the rest of the customer environment is hosted (eg Domain Controller, FS ...)

Thank you in advance!

VMware View as a Graduate Thesis project

Hello,

I am new to the forums as a poster, but have gained much knowledge as a "lurker", and I thank you all for the contributions. I am currently the VMware admin (very loose term) for my company, and very soon we will be deploying VMware View (or VDI as we purchased it). Concurrently, I am finishing my last class in college for my graduate degree and thought that this may be the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

I know nothing about VMware View, and thought the perfect opportunity to learn about it before we implement it, is to taper my college thesis project to something on the line of (very generic at this time) "Why desktop virtualization is 'better' than physical desktops". Of course this would not be my thesis statement, but it will be in that general direction. Hardware savings, software savings, management ease, deployment ease, mobility, efficiency, user experience, troubleshooting, storage savings, DR, etc.

So as I am beginning this 6-month project, I just wanted to throw this out there to see if there are any ideas from the VMware community on making this thesis a sucessful one that will also add to the body of knowledge in place for VMware.

Thanks!

Best practice for new Win 10 image

Hi all

We are running VMware 6 here, with dedicated desktops, but am thinking of making a new pool with Windows 10, and floating desktops.

When installing a new Win 10, the first thing that shows are "User First Sign-in Animation". Do I need this? If posible I would rather not. So if there is a way to disable this I would be glad to hear.

This site http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2411-user-first-sign-animation-turn-off-window-10-a.html tells me how to disable it, but after what I have read, the process it self are in the background running.

If the user resets it desktop, would it the animation come back on again?

And if anyone have a good best-practice on how to tune a new Win 10 image , I would also be very glad.

Integration with Local Desktop Applications

This question has probably been asked before but here goes.

A client of ours has decided to use VMWare Horizon for their VDI Solution, this is not a problem for our application, but they do also want us to integrate with an application on their physical desktop.

The integration is one way and will only involve launching the app with a parameter.

Forgive the very simple question, but is this possible and how. I know how this can be achieved in TS and Citrix, just never been asked to do this for VMWare.

Thanks

Multiple AD Domains in VMware Horizon View

Hi Guys, I want to test creating Pools using 2 Active Directory domains. I've setup my environment as follow:

Domain A

1- Connection Server

2- Composer Server

3- Security server

4- vCenter Server

Domain B

1- Connection Server

2- Created a separate View Composer account

At the moment Horizon View 5.3.2 is fully functional on Domain A. But I need your help deploying pool using Domain B. After setting up Connection Server(joined to Domain B) I tried to add Domain B using View Composer account by logging to View Admin(Domain A) > Edit vCenter Server > Edit View Composer Settings > Verify Server Informations(under Domain) but I'm getting "Bad domain name"

Could you guys please help or send me a link to setup one-way trust which is needed for VMware View so that I can deploy Pool using Domain B.

Without creating any trust, I've added Domain B conditional forwarder on Domain A which let me add the Domain B without "Bad domain name" pop up. But I don't know what to do next. Can someone please guide me.

Which version of Horizon Client are users running?

I use View PowerCLI to list all active users status from Get-RemoteSession and use ActiveDirectory lookup for more users details.

I need to know which version of Horizon Client every user in the pool is using and add it to the script.

Can not find it in Get-RemoteSession or the HKCU\Volatile Environment registry section.

Is it possible to locate and how?

Packaged printer drivers

Notice that with this update KB3170455, you end up getting warning "do you trust this printer"?

updating the drivers or removing the patch gets rid of the warning, where the users receive the printer, but without drivers, thus they can't print in a floating pool refresh at log off setup.

Simulate or Automate a user logon using view

Hi

I'm looking to find a way to automate a user logging onto a virtual desktop using the horizon client, either the desktop or the html client. We have non persistent desktop pools setup and I want to be able to script something that checks the status of a newel y provisioned vm. I've got something working using powershell using send-keys but its not very good and it requires an active session.

Persona Management - User Profiles Storage Location Using Windows 7 Horizon View 6.1.1

$

Good Morning Tech World!

So I'm the new guy from the block and I have a few questions and concerns that maybe someone out there has already addressed.

1 - In a perfect VDI environment should we be saving user profiles using persona management to the same storage where the virtual machines resides? ( I heard about UEM but we are not there yet )

2 - Do you run the user profiles on the same DiskPool or Volumes ? Or create a new DiskPool or Volume isolated for their profiles

In our current environment we have a two NetApps a FAS2240 for our Server Farm and user profiles, for the View Environment we have a E-Series all SDD just for the vm's. Our current environment of 300 users with a mix of persistent and non-persistent (linked clones)

Our E-Series has a full capacity over 30TB's a total of 36 SSD Disk's and we are only using about 8TB's. We currently have One Disk_Pool and multiple Volumes for the view environment, 12 Disk's have not been assigned  yet.

I hope this all makes sense and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Gus.

One Way Trust Design Question

$

I've already read several write ups on this but none explain the following:

Using View 7 - If I have the following and Domain B Trusts Domain A - can these connection servers be Primary and Replica? as below?? or would they both need to be separate standard? AND if they both need to be separate as standard - is there any reason I would then need the Connection Server in Domain A?

Domain A

- Connection Server - Replica (due to the Domain B trusting Domain A)

- Composer Server (add Domain A & B accounts to deploy to both domains)

- vCenter Server

- View Administrators

Domain B - (Deploy desktops here)

- Created a separate View Composer account to deploy to this domain)

- Connection Server - Primary?

- Desktops

- Users

Lastly the Admins and Users in Both Domains will be using smart card authentication.

Thanks!

Why use RDSH vs. AppVol vs. UEM

$

With VMware having multiple ways to deliver applications - I'd like to know the design decisions on why you would use RDSH vs. AppVols vs UEM to deliver them. Is there a pro to using RDSH over AppVols? or reasons to use AppVols and UEM together? I'm looking for technical reasons not things like 'I prefer AppVol because its easy to administer'. Just trying to understand when I deal with customers why they would/should use one or the other for their app deployments during design decisions.

Thanks!
