RDP volatile environment variables not populated

$

I've looked around and haven't seen anyone else talking about this, so I thought I'd ask the group.

I'm seeing an issue where users who connect to our View 5.3 environment via RDP do not have their volatile environment variables populated, but PCoIP users do.

I'm not sure why there would be a disparity, but I was recently attempting to script an action and this came up, so I don't know how long it's been an issue.

Has anyone else seen this? Is it expected?

Thanks,

Thomas

I am running some test on Horizon View when recompose and VM with the option to recompose immediately and logoff sessions, this doesn't happen immediately. But I do notice that it finishes after a couple of hours. Any suggestions on how to make recompose operations happen immediately.

Horizon 6.2 Desktop w/ Philips SpeechMike 3200

We have been trying to setup our VDI environment to be able to utilize the Philips SpeechMike 3200 for a week or 2 now, with not much (any) success.

We're on Horizon 6.2. We're using Windows PCs or Dell Wyse 5010s w/ PCoIP thin clients are our endpoints. Thus far, the experience is the same: the VM session just isn't seeing the SpeechMike. At least how we expect to.

On my local Windows PC, when I plug in the mic, Windows automatically installs it. No need for specific drivers, no prompts, nothing. Just works. Part of this verification, is I then install the Philips Control Center on my PC. Sure enough, inside of it, we see the mic, it is able to perform all steps on the various buttons the validate the functions, we're good to go. I then connect to my VM using the Windows Horizon client. In device manager on the VM, I DO NOT see the mic. Interestingly, the functions work. The trackball moves the mouse, the audio output and input both work, that testing seems ok utilizing just standard Windows functions. When I install the control center though, it lists no device connected. This behavior is identical when using our thin client. The windows session will allow for the basic functionality, but we can't test the button functions because the control center, again, doesn't see it.

We plan on attempting to have our clinical staff test the mic within their application anyway, just to see. Perhaps the Control Center not seeing it is moot, and it will still work within the specific app. I'd just feel a bit better if control center on the VM saw it.

Am I missing anything? It looks like as of Horizon 6, Philips dictation devices are full supported.

In some graphical applications (for example photoshop) the mouse pointer appaers with a black square background. See attachement.

Environment: VMware View 5.3 with ESXi 5.5 as hypervisor. The virtual desktops use Windows 7 x64 with the latest updates as operating system.

The VDI's (vDGA mode) have a Nvidia GRID K1 graphics card attached with passthrough mode. In sVGA mode this does not happen.

Has anyone seen this before? How can we fix this?

Kind regards,

Thin Client to Zero Client roaming, View 6 Agent, The connection to the remote computer has been closed due to a new connection request

The connection to the remote computer has been closed due to a new connection request.

This is the VMware View Client error message on the thin client, once the session has been roamed to the zero client. The actual transfer of session information seems to work, that is, the virtual desktop pops up on the zero client without issue. What is left on the thin client though, is an error prompt from the View Client running on the embedded OS (XP w/ View 4.6 Client). The VM is Win 7 x64 with the View 6 Agent. We also use Imprivata for our SSO and badge/tap-in management.

Interestingly, roaming from thin client to thin client works fine and produces no errors -and of course zero to zero produces no errors

It does not seem to matter if the roam happens while the session is still active on the thin client, or if it has been disconnected/locked first, it will still produce an error in the VMware View Client once a roam to a zero client takes place.

I had hoped to do a search for this error and find that it is common with documented solutions -but apparently I am one of the lucky few that have run into this.

Any ideas?

Running Scheduled Tasks on a Linked-Clone VM

$

Hello,

I'm trying to find a way to provide a linked-clone VM for analysts to use to run scheduled tasks after hours. Is there a way to save scheduled tasks in the users persona or redirected folders? where the tasks would remain after a log off and then a log in and the tasks would not need to be recreated. I'm trying to avoid building full clones for this, but might need to do that if I can't figure anything else out.

Thanks

I can't seem to find any documentation out there on this.  I need to change the IP address of my Composer server.  I found an article that helps me with the View Connection Servers, but not Composer: https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2051923

Urgent Help!!! one of my client meets - "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections"

Dear all,

one of my staff said she could not connect her desktop vm22 and the view client said "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections". my view administrator displays that “the pending session on machine xx for user xxx has been expired” . but i then assigned another user to the same desktop, everything looks fine.

background:

1. I am using view 6.0.

2. This user used to assigned another desktop vm06. it took a long long time (more than 30 minutes) to login (agent set not delete local persona) , This Morning when she tried to connect(already logged in before, here just reconnect),  she got "there is no available gateway for this display protocol". So i assigned her to another desktop vm22

Is there something wrong with this user account or something else. Need your help!!! Thanks in advance!

Issues with VMWare View PowerCLI connecting to node manager

$

I need some help in trouble-shooting an odd issue:

We've installed the VMWare View PowerCLI on a server and use the cmdlet Get-DesktopVM to get the list of all VDIs. That all works when I login with RDP to the server and use the VMWare View PowerCLI (which loads the correct snapin).

But I want to automate this and we use HP SA to do this. It logs in with it's own way (which works perfectly fine) and then tries to run the power shell script.

Our script loads the snapin with

. "D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\extras\PowerShell\add-snapin.ps1"

and then runs Get-DesktopVM

But then it gets this error:

          Welcome to VMware View PowerCLI

Get-DesktopVM : View Server connect FAILED

At C:\temp\rak1.ps1:2 char:14

+ Get-DesktopVM <<<<

    + CategoryInfo          : NotInstalled: (vmware.view.pow...ts.GetDesktopVM

   :GetDesktopVM) [Get-DesktopVM], Exception

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Node Manager not running,vmware.view.powershell.

   cmdlets.GetDesktopVM

As said, the same thing works fine if I login with RDP so I don't think there's anything wrong with VMWare View or the way the PowerCLI is installed.

But something is obviously missing in this powershell environment when logged in via HP SA.

Could someone give me some hints on how to trouble-shoot this? What does Get-DesktopVM need to be able to connect to the Node Manager? Does it look for a file, is this a TCP/IP connection which maybe goes to the wrong address, or how does this work.

I'm already staring at this for many hours and I'm trying all kind of things. For a while I thought we miss the vmtoolsd process and I started it in this shell. But that didn't make a difference either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Horizon 7 Connection Server and Replica Server

i am trying to get an idea of how to have a redundant solution for my Horizon Connection Servers.

Is this solution supposed to go behind a load balancer like an F5?

Does it come w/ its own built in loadbalancing solution?  I remember Microsoft had a software based solution like this.

I am wondering mostly becauase our entire network is secured w/ a firewall on each vlan.  I just complted a 1 Connection Server solution, now i have to duplicate all the firewall requests.  UHHHHHHggghhh.....

Hi Everyone

I need to configure a webcamera logitech c920 on my virtual enviroments

My zero client is a Dell Wyse 5030

I read many information about Real Time Audio Video on Horizon View and usb redirection for the zero client , so i enabled usb redirect for my client and the camera wad correctly detected but i got some resolution problem

Logitech software only gave me the resolution options of  320x240 / 640x480 for photo and 360p for videos

There is the possibility to obtain better resolution for my enviroments ?

How to fix VMware View Connection Server Certificate Revocation Check Error?

$

0

Dear community,

Since about 2 weeks I am experiencing a certificate revocation check error in our Horizon View 6.2 environment. The strange thing is that within about 12 hours both (replicating) connection servers and the vCenter server / Composer server (on the same machine) are considered to have invalid certificates, though, in fact, they have valid ones (CA certificates). We do not use security servers.

The view administrator console shows the following for the connection servers:

Server's certificate is not trusted.

Server's certificate cannot be checked.

For the vCenter it says (as I manually validated the certificate):

No problem detected.

Certificate is untrusted but the thumbprint for the certificate is accepted.

With logging set to "full" the connection server logs show the following for the vCenter server:

TRACE (17B0-0E98) <VCHealthUpdate> [NativeKeyVault] validateCertificateChain response: { Result=FAIL, EndEntityReasons=cantCheckRevoked, ChainReasons=invalid, SelfSigned=false, EndErrorCode=16777280, EndInfoCode=258, ChainErrorCode=16777280, ChainInfoCode=256, PolicyErrorCode=-2146885613 }

As far as I can see there are no similar entries for the connection server certificates in the log.

At the moment I am running the environment with manually validated Composer and vCenter certificates and invalid (red) connection server certificates (as View clients and browsers do not consider them to be invalid).

I already checked that I am able to make everything "green" again via setting the registry key "CertificateRevocationCheckType" to 2 (as described here Configuring Certificate Revocation Checking on Server Certificates). This leads me to the conclusion that one of the intermediate certificates cannot be validated. As well, I got the information that one "version" of an intermediary certificate (of an intermediary ca) has been revoked. It seems to be no coincidence - as the point of time fits as well, but this particular version seems not be in use in my connection servers.

However, even with full logging activated, I cannot get the information which (intermediary) certificate cannot be validated and why. I would have expected to see something like "checking OCSP" or "checking CRL" but I cannot find it in the logs. Though, I noticed that one of the intermediary certificates was missing the OCSP URL (though the "Authority Information Access" field existed). Of course I updated the certificate with a version containing the OCSP URL but it did not change anything.

Additionally I manually checked all the certificates in the chain with openssl (for OCSP) and the CRL lists as well, but everything seems to be OK (all URLs are reachable and no used certificate has been revoked). In fact, as well, I do not interpret the error as "that the connection server does consider a certificate as invalid because it has been revoked", but "that it cannot check if it has been revoked". The servers do not need a proxy and there is none configured, as well (I checked proxy settings system context, too).

For the moment the problem is not critical, as the "red" status of the connection servers does not have an effect on our customers and as well I could turn off the certificate revocation checking (or switch it to only check the server certificate (2)). But of course I would like to really fix the problem.

Is there anyone who can give me a hint about what to check, e.g. how to find out which certificate cannot be checked and why? Has anyone had the same or a similar problem? VMware support works on the problem as well, but they seem to do not know the problem, neither.

I appreciate any thoughts and replies! Thanks!

Best regards,

Fabian

Agent Unreachable Status for VDI Clients

$

Hey guys,

We have an automated pool of 150 desktops which get refreshed on logoff OR after being disconnected for >60 minutes. I've noticed that we have been gradually getting more and more "Agent Unreachable" status's for our VDI desktops over a period of 4 - 6 hours until I go in, remove the VM's from disk and let provisioning re-provision the VM's to reset them. Doing a desktop reset does not fix the issue. I have made sure that the VM's are receiving IP addresses from DHCP and they are. We are not running out of addresses since these 150 desktops have 250 IP addresses in the DHCP scope with 15 minute lease times.

We are running VMware View 5.2. If any more information is needed, just ask.

Horizon Windows Client customisation

Hello,

I'm working on a thin client setup for my university.

Everything is almost fine, I just would like to fine tune to minor issues

- local file access. I would like to enable it just for removable media like USB sticks and prevent users to gain access to the  C: drive. The client is configured that way, but nothing prohibits the user to change this setting back and poke around in the C drive of the thin client. I would like to prevent it.

- access to published apps: I would like to give users only access to desktops from the thin clients and don't allow them to access apps. Is this possible?

Persona Management not capturing some data

So we have a few weird issues with Linked Clones and Persona Management.  We're running Office 2010 on these machines and the profile doesn't seem to capture the email signature, pinned items or any Outlook configuration changes to the interface (reading pane, etc).  Is anyone else seeing this and if so, how did you solve?

Hi,

View agent for linux 6.1.1 worked well on ubuntu 12.04.

But the agent did not work on dual nic environment.

The blast protocol might be listening on unexpected interface.

Recomposing on View 6.2 with vSAN

Has anyone had any issues with recompose processes with View 6.2 on vSAN and ESXi 6 Update 2? I'm going to post some error messages/screenshots on our next recompose, but, it seems in this POC environment we have with the aforementioned setup, it just doesn't go clean. At all. We have about 300 VMs in a pool. If we recompose, I would say 2/3 go into an error state and have to be deleted manually via viewdbchk.

Again, apologies for no screenshots or exact errors, I will add them later, just wanted to get this posted up.

Datastore clusters, should they be used with View?

$

We have two vCenter servers, one to handle our virtualized servers and one to handle our View environment. Both are running ESXi 6.0 U2

For our virtualized servers we have a Datastore Cluster that includes three datastores. On this Datastore Cluster we have enabled Storage DRS

In our View 6.2.1 environment we have a single datastore that houses our 370 View non-persistent desktops. Even though it is backed by an all flash array we are thinking about having three datastores for our View environment instead of one. Our SAN uses 10gig iSCSI connections to vSphere. Two questions

  1. If we create three separate datastores for our View environment, should we create a Datastore Cluster and enable Storage DRS?
  2. View has the ability to put the replica on a separate datastore. In our environment were everything is backed with an all flash SAN, is there any advantage in doing this?

VM version 11 vSGA performance issues?

$

Is anyone seeing reduced 3D application performance when using VM version 11 VMs configured for vSGA?

Our production vSGA VMs when run with VM version 9 and 10 run very well, however when we upgrade the vSGA VM to ver 11 and utilize the new VRAM limits (configured for 1024MB) we see FPS drop and random stuttering when rotating 3D models.  Running the same tests on other vSGA VMs with ver 9 and 10 there are no issues (very smooth rotations and good FPS rate).  All vSGA VMs are clones of each other and running off the same ESXi 6.0 host.  We have all the performance tweaks in place (reg settings...  i.e. maxappframerate, etc..) and are using a K2 GPU.  Next test is to reduce the VRAM setting back down to 512MB on the ver 11 VM and see if the behavior changes.

Nathan

Hello,

When I powerup a thin client that uses the Horizon 3.5.2 client, the User name field shows the user name of the previous user.

Is there anyway to clear this ?
