VMware View Desktop into Maintenance Mode via CLI

$

I am looking for a way to get a copy of a suspended VMware View desktop via CLI prior to refreshing the image. The scenario is that I have dynamically detected a system as "compromised" and I want to refresh that desktop to get it back to a "good" state. However, before I do so I would like to keep a copy of the image for forensic purposes.

Ideally I would like to retrieve a copy of the memory as well but unfortunately it doesn't appear as though I can clone a running virtual machine.

The next best case would be to suspend or shutdown the VM and clone it however whenever you suspend or shutdown a View managed desktop the system will automatically power it back on unless it is placed in maintenance mode first.

I want to do all of this via a PowerShell script but unfortunately I can't find any information on a cmdlet to put the desktop into maintenance mode. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Alternatively, does anyone have any other suggestions on how to obtain my forensic image through CLI before I refresh the desktop?

Location based Guest printer connection

Hi

Customer has users connecting in two ways, either from home or while in-house. We are able to connect the guest printer when the users connect from home, but when an user is working in-house, that printer is still the default. Is there a way for location based printing and connecting different default printers?

Changing vCenter association with pool

Our vCenter name changed a few months ago, and I still have a few persistant desktop pools pointing to this vCenter name. Is there a way I can change the vCenter that is associated with this pool without recreating the pool? I've changed ADSI and SQL but haven't seen anything obvious...

Thanks

VDI solution or suggestions for lab infrastructure

$

Hello,

Just recently took a job at a University where I will be over seeing (supporting) all the student labs. Currently there are about 375+ thick clients that run Windows XP (stop lauging). The current process is a little archiac. They use BartPE which then boots into Symantec GHOST to re-image the workstations. Microsoft GPO is used to push software updates out at the moment.

I would like to put together a TCO to see if VMware View could be a solution, but I have been reading about the new release of 'Mirage' - which sounds very interesting as it takes into account both virtual and physical platforms.

Just want to see if there is anyone else there that run similar solutions and if it is worth travelling down the VDI path without of course breaking the bank or budget. Ideally if something can be successfully planned we could think about rolling it out to the school's admin staff - which would be the ideal goal.

Thanx

PXE Booting Vmware View Linux Client w/Ubuntu (Not using LTSP)

This topic has been thrown around in here before but I'd like to start a new discussion on the topic and describe what we do today versus where we'd like to be.

Current Situation

Today, we're re-purposing old PCs and installing WinXP with only Vmware View installed. We enable autologin and replace the default shell with the VMware View client so when the machine starts up it goes right to the VMware View login screen. Then we create an image and clone other PCs using that image. We have a different image for each different desktop model we own. Although this works well, it can be time consuming to maintain all these images and having to clone desktops.

Future Goal

We would like to PXE boot a minimal Ubuntu 11.10 installation with LXDE, autologin and autostart the VMware View client for Linux (Not the open client). This will allow us to maintain one or just a few client images right from the server and will also be able to remove the hard drives from our old desktops.

Status

  • Ubuntu Server 11.10 has been setup with DHCP, TFTP and NFS
  • Minimal ubuntu client image has been created and LXDE and Vmware View client packages have been installed.
  • The client boots up with LXDE desktop and autologin has been enabled.
  • The client boots up in less than 50 seconds

Next Steps

  • Setup autostart of VMware view client with custom parameters
  • Enable sound and USB redirection
  • Configuration for multiple displays

I plan document the steps that i followed to setup my environment once i have everything finalized. In the meantime, if anyone is working on something similar, I'd really like to hear about your experience.

Stay tuned....

migrate VMs from View 5.1 to Horizons View 5.2

Instead of upgrading my current view 5.1 deployment, I am looking to setup a seperate Horizon View 5.2 enviroment to migrate to. (1 VCS and 1 VSS)  My users are on dedicated desktops that I would like to keep when migrating to the new enviroment.  Is there a way to add desktops into a pool without using the template for the pool?   What is the easiest way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Upgrade paths

I'm looking to upgrade our View 5.1 install to Horizon 5.2 over the next few days, after making sure all our servers are running 5.0U2.

Now if I've read the forums correctly, one of the few missing functions would be the space reclamation feature as that requires 5.1b?  If we decide to upgrade to 5.1b later is there any issues I need to watch out for?  My main concern is the new requirement for SSL certs within ESXi.  Currently we use an externally provided san certificate for view, would this cert and one created from our AD (different domain names) co-exist together or do I need to consider using the external certificate on the ESXi servers?

Thanks,

Rob

Can't deploy customized Virtual Machines

$

I post this in this forum because the problem appeared when trying to create desktop pools, but then it happened when simply deploying customized VMs from Templates. You may move it to another forum if necessary.

My situation is this: one machine with ESX Server 3.5, one machine with VirtualCenter Server (W 2003) and another one with VDM Connection Server (W 2003). Both VirtualCenter and VDM belong to the same domain. From the VMware Infrastructure Client I create a new VM, install Windows XP Professional SP 2, update it. Then install VMware Tools and VDM Agent and nothing more. I turn the VM into a template.

I copied the Windows XP sysprep files in the correct folder and then I created some different customization specifications, some join a domain, some don't; some enter the Windows Key, some don't; some uso autoadminlogon, some don't; etc. To create these specifications I've used the VIC wizard (appears when cloning a VM), the sysprep tool and the Edit->Customization Specifications option in VIC.

Now the problem. None of these worked. I deplyed VMs from the template created before using ALL the specfications I created (seven) and they all end with a "Failed to deploy template: fault.CustomizationPending.summary" error, which is not very explicative.

Am I skipping any necessary step?

Thank you and sorry for my poor english.

Certificate for Security and Connection Servers

$

Hello there,

I have the below setup

1 Security server - myview.domain.com (mapped to public IP when accessing through the internet)

1 Connection server - myview.domain.com (same FQDN mapped to an internal private IP using local DNS)

So users from inside will resolve the internal IP, where if they leave the company they'll resolve the external IP.

Now the question is, if I generate a certificate from the security server:

1- what type of certificate should I buy from Thawte or DigiCert?

2- Can I import the same certifcate on both Connection and security servers?

Regards,

Persona Management : deleted directories come back to life

$

Has anybody seen this before?

We use non persistent link clones with Persona Management for the profile.  Sometimes if you delete a directory in the profile it simply comes back 2 seconds later. It will go away if you stop the persona management service before deleteing. The problem also does not happen if you delete the equivalent directory on the network repository before deleting the local copy. So the link between the problem and persona management is quite obvious. How and when it happens is not clear.

one example is a thinapp sandbox (in appdata\roaming). We sometimes want to delete a snadbox during troubleshooting ... and oups ... it comes back.

Another example is trying to get a user to delete his dropbox directory (c:\users\bob\dropbox) after telling him to uninstall dropbox. Ths directory will just come back.

This is not a reassuring sight because we don't how,  when and why it happens and can only imagine what is can do a to some software that try to delete directories in their normal use...

I have an open case with Vmware but am not getting much feedback.

Error Occurring when provisioning view VM’s

I'm currently setting up a POC of View at work.

We have decided to use the linked clones’ option. The pool is small, as it's just a POC, with max size 10, and start off with 3 provisioned.

Part way through the provisioning of the servers I get the error

"View Composer agent initialization state error (20): Internal Error, failed to synchronize computer password (waited 0 seconds)"

When I first created the pools (1 Win7 32 bit pool and 1 Win7 64 bit pool) some worked some didn’t so I had the initial 3 with numbers like vm01, vm02 and vm04

I did a recompose this week of the 64 bit pool, to add in some patches and other changes and every existing VM in that pool once again gave me the error:

“View Composer agent initialization state error (20): Internal Error, failed to synchronize computer password (waited 0 seconds)”

It then went on to try and provision more to get a working one but stopped as it hit the pool’s maximum.

I have avoided recomposing the 32 bit pool at the moment, as it is sort of working.

I am currently using sysprep but I did receive the error when testing out a pool using quick prep as well.

Can anyone enlighten me on what may be wrong?

Thanks

ADAM replication nonsense?

$

Hi.

I work at at technical college with sites in 3 cities.  Each city is connected to each other at 100Mbps low-latency connection (think of it as a triangle).  We run voice over IP, video over IP, and telepresence over these connections along with web traffic, file & print, Oracle, etc.  Anyone who has telepresence knows that if the WAN can handle that type of traffic, this shouldn't be an issue.

Yesterday we had a visit from the VMware EUC expert to review our setup and he mentioned that what we have is unsupported because of the ADAM database replication.  I never heard of this issue before and I wanted to get feedback from others who have used View longer than I have.

We setup a View 5.1 environment last October where the main connection server is in CITY A and we installed a connection server in CITY B and another in CITY C.  He stated that this is unsupported and VMware won't support us if we call them.

His suggestion was to scrap this and install a separate View environment in each city.  Say what?  I am not implying he is a liar but I always double check facts that appear to be suspicious.  It is an ADAM database and has all the tools necessary for latency and disconnect WAN.  Plus, it is a 100Mbps connection, not a T-1 or lower.

We did this approach so that each site has its own VDI server and the users are not going across the WAN.  Provides local VDI access with a centralized management.

Thoughts?

Single desktop pool / OU - different pcoip tuning parameters?

Single desktop pool / OU spanning many sites which require different pcoip tuning parameters through group policy.

How are people dealing with this without having to have separate pools / OUs for the different sites?
Can pcoip computer policy be looped back onto the desktops if the policy is applied to an OU which contains the users from the different sites?

PCoIP Dual Monitor resolution issues

$

Hello, i'm facing an issues with every VMware View Client that use PCoIP.

We are using dual monitor thinclients (HP T510) to connect to various pools of Windows XP SP3 virtual machines running VMware View Agent 5.0.1 and 5.1.3 (we also have a VMware View Connection Server 5.0.1 and a VMware View Connection Server 5.1.3).

Each virtual machine has two applications running at full screen, one for each monitor.

When a client connects, all the applications gets moved to the first monitor and shrinked to a lower resolution. We figured out that the shrink issues is an application bug (the application is not able to re-set its size on resolution change)... BUT that means, anyway, that the screen resolution seems to changes every time the client connects.

The only workaround that we found is to re-lauch the applications (that is very annoying) or use RDP as the default Pool protocol...

Any ideas?
