404 when accessing View through Workspace

I have installed a trial version of Horizon View 4.2 and Workspace, View is working great using a client, and after a bit of fiddling, I got it syncing with Workspace, However when I try to access it through the Workspace link, it directs me to a view server URL, but throws out:

This desktop may only be checked out to a 64-bit capable client device

Hi Everyone.

I am installing VMware View Client with Local Mode (VMware-viewclientwithlocalmode-x86_64-5.3.0-1042023.exe) on a Windows 7 Client, and while trying to check out a Windows 8 Desktop, I got the below error:

"This desktop may only be checked out to a 64-bit capable client device" as shown below:

Please Advice!

How does Horizon View share the GPU between VMs?

Say I have three hosts, and only two have the Nvidia GPU, what happens when I vmotion a VM to the host without the GPU?  Does that VM lose the capability to use the GPU?

Uneven placement of images with local SSD storage

All,

I'm running through a PoC project with a customer using View 5.1 following the guidelines in "VMware Reference Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops on Local Solid-State Storage with VMware View 5"  as close as we can.

http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/10278

I have eight nodes all identically configured with local SSD storage - again all identical model drives, all empty.

Creating a pool of linked clones across this group creates some very uneven placement of the images.

As an example if I create a pool of 80 VM's on the 8 local discs the distribution will be something like...

Disc 1 - 30

Disc 2 - 5

Disc 3 - 0

Disc 4 - 25

Disc 6 - 10

Disc 7 - 10

Disc 8 - 0

If I then remove 30 V's from the pool it might delete all 30 from disk 1. At the moment every action on the pool has to be manually controlled.

Has anybody else come across this behavour.

Users reporting only 2/3 of monitor shown and rest black

I have some users that are reporting to me that when they return from a break / meeting that only about 2/3 of their monitor is showing the VM.  If they have dual monitors the secondary monitor is all black and their VM is shrunk down to 2/3's of the other monitor.  This started when we migrated them from 4.6 to 5.1.2 and reimaged their WYSE device to a different image with the 4.6 VIEW client.  We are having to use the 4.6 client because there are too many issues with the 5 clients that WYSE is offering.  This is not happening to everyone and for some it has taken about a week for it to happen.  Below are some of the things that I could think of that might be causing this but I wanted some other suggestions and what to try to take care of this.

  • VM tools and agent were upgraded.  The agent version installed is 5.1.1 because of some issues heard with 5.1.2
  • Enable 3D support has been enabled
  • I selected 4 monitors with the highest resolution available and set the Video Card to "Auto-Detect settings" instead of using a custom setting
  • Again, the client on the thin client is 4.6 and they are connecting to the 5 environment

Any ideas what is going on here?  Thank you in advance for your help!

RDP Virtual Channel and PCoIP

Hi, I am new to VMware Horizon View and I have a question regarding the PCoIP protocol.  Do you know if 3rd party RDP Virtual Channel driver can work with this protocol in VMware Horizon View? If so, what are the steps to configure the driver in this environment?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Customization Operation Timed Out

Anyone ever see this?

Windows 7 customisation fails.

Guys,

Need your valuable inputs here.

I am trying to setup VMware view 5.2 environments in lab but having issues with sysprep.  I don’t have actual windows 7 ent. Product keys (running on evaluation).

Since I don’t have KMS server, I am not trying quickprep.

Issue is, after creating desktop pool, view never finish the win7 guest customisation. If I see the VM console, it hangs at attached screenshot.

Steps followed.

  • Build win7 VM with VDM and tools.

  • Shutdown the VM

  • Take the snapshot

  • Create cust script by selecting “Work Group” and product key left blank.

I have tried to clone master image with above said customisation, its same issue.

Am I missing any step? Or it’s by design, we can’t clone/ sysprep windows 7 VM with evaluation license key?

Thanks,

View Administrator - New Domain - New Administrator

Hello together,

we used Linked Clone Desktops in a View environment. Last week we had a server crash and had to setup a new Windows domain.

I put the VCenterServer and ConnectServer to new domain. Everything works fine but the login to View Administrator is not possible. How can I chance the Administrator account without login to View Administrator? Any ideas?

View 5.1 corrupt image when more than 1 snaphot

I have a View 5.1 test lab (one big ESX 5.1 with View 5.1). Everything works fine except when I try to create a linked clone pool with a master image that has more than one level of snapshots.. the result will automatically a Windows 7 link cloned that will not get nd of "provisioning" because Windows is corrupt. If I delete all snapshots and create one the pool will create juste fine.  Various versions of view agents, vmware tools, esx patches have been tried. Even vanilla Windows 7 with 2 small snapshots will create the problem.  1 snapshot = ok.

Any ideas ?

Pool creation & deletion. Some minor bugs in View v5.1 ?

Hi Everyone,

We have recently updated our View v5.0 system to View v5.1 by closely following the instructions in the published upgrade guide.

Our VDI system seems to be working OK in general since this upgrade. However, we have encountered the following new issues. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same and/or may have any advice please ?.

  • The view composer log file contains multiple instances of the following error when the cloning the master replica to create a pool (but clone & pool creation still works).

2012-06-26 17:42:10,000 | 31            | INFO  | CommonLib.Util.Util - Will retry after 0 seconds. The retry number is 1.

2012-06-26 17:42:10,000 | VC thread     | INFO  | CommonLib.VcSubsystem.PropertyCollectorUpdateTracker - Got SimVcSubsystemException      RequestCanceledFault fault was thrown by the VC server: https://na-vdi-vcenter.stud.ad.eiu.edu.au:443/sdk..

  • When creating a pool with “Host Caching” enabled the system waits for 30mins at a “configure virtual disk digest” task within vCenter. During this period multiple instances of the following error appears in the View Composer logs (but pool creation eventually still works)

2012-06-26 17:54:22,971 | 30            | INFO  | CommonLib.Util.Util - Will retry after 0 seconds. The retry number is 1.

2012-06-26 17:54:22,971 | VC thread     | INFO  | CommonLib.VcSubsystem.PropertyCollectorUpdateTracker - Got SimVcSubsystemException RequestCanceledFault fault was thrown by the VC server: https://na-vdi-vcenter.stud.ad.eiu.edu.au:443/sdk..

  • When deleting a pool with “Host Caching” enabled the vcenter reportsthe VM replica has been deleted from the datastore. However, if you browse the datastore it’s actually still there and needs to be deleted manually.

  • According the the VMWare View Admin Guide if you enable “host caching” on an existing pool the VMs within that pool should activate this feature after they next reboot. This is not happening in our environment; we can only get “host caching” activated for VMs if the pool is created with this option ON when it’s created.

Perhaps these are just some new bugs included in View v5.1 ?. Not a big deal so we are just working around them for now but it would be excellent to be able to fix these up.

Thanks

Zeroclient Dual Monitor mirror/clone desktop display

Hallo,

we have the problem that we can not mirror or clone the desktop from zeroclient pcoip session over two monitors.

The situation is follow we are using clear cube zeroclient which support dual monitors and in the virtual machine there are both monitors detected and we can only extent the screen from monitor 1 to monitor 2 but we can not clone this display/desktop.

In the display settings i can only extent to monitor two but all other options to change primary display are grayed out.

We are using normal WinXP in the VM and Vmware View 4.5.

Has somebody a hint how to solve the problem? I was using google for this problem since ours but there is nothing to find which helps me.

best regards

dirk

IronKey No Longer Works With View 5.2 Agent

Having upgraded to Horizon View 5.2 we have discovered our IronKeys no longer work.  Prior to 5.2 we were running 5.0.1  but have started a fresh with a new base image.  Reverting the agent on this new image to the 5.0.1 allows the IronKey to connect, but reverting back to 5.2 stops the IronKey working completely.  This is tested without any applications or optimization, but with all available Windows updates.

Is anybody else in a position to confirm this situation, or to counter the belief IronKey's do not work with 5.2?  Is there a policy setting that needs to be tweaked post agent installation?

Cheers

John

System hangs on bootup with VMWare View Agent and Kaspersky Antivirus

We have tested this on several Windows 7 systems (physical PC) that will hang on both shutdown and restart after installing VMWare View Agent. We did monitor the driver install and ensured it had completed before rebooting (so its not an issue of the VMWare View drivers not completing the installation). In our testing this only happens when the following conditions are present:

1.  Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows version 8.1.0.646 (a) is installed
2. VMWare View Agent version 5.1.1.799444 is installed with the option for USB redirection (if installed without USB redirection, everything works fine)
3. Kaspersky agent build included the "Device Control" component, whether or not it is enabled by policy.
Troubleshooting Steps:
1. Disabled Kaspersky Device Control (so it should not be monitoring USB devices).
RESULT: System hangs at startup
2. Added several exclusions and trusted app entries within the Kaspersky Policy for the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub files including the following:
Excluded Folders/Files:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbd.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\vmwvhub.sys
c:\windows\system32\WdfCoInstaller01009.dll
C:\Program Files\Teradici Corporation\PCoIP Host Software\ [all subfolders]
C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\ [all subfolders]
C:\Program Files (x86)\vmware\infrastructure\[all subfolders]
Trusted Apps:
C:\Program Files\vmware\vmware view\agent\bin\wssm.exe
RESULT: System hangs at startup
3. Updated the VMWare View Agent to the current 5.1.2 version
RESULT: System hangs at startup
4. Uninstalled Kaspersky entirely
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
5. Uninstalled VMWare View entirely (no more system hang at startup)
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
6. Disabled the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub Service from starting by changing the Start from a a 3 (automatic) to a 4 (disabled):
Key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\vmusb
Value:
[dword]Start = 0x00000003
Once we do this the computer will boot fine but we are obviously unable to use the View Agent with USB redirection.
NOTE: Once the system is hunt, you must start in Safe Mode and make the above registry change to be able to restart the computer without hanging.
RESULT: No more system hang at startup
Workarounds/Solutions:
The solution so far has  been to create a build version of the "Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows (8.1.0.646)" install that does not include the "Device Control" Component. Even though our policy disables the use of the Device Control component, the supposedly latent running of this component's files trigger the hang. We did create a new build version of the Kaspersky client that had all components other than "Device Control" selected and we had no issues with booting and using the VMWare View Agent or Kaspersky under those conditions.
So to review, here are the workarounds discovered so far:
1. Install a build version of the Kaspersky agent that has the "Device Control" components unselected.
2. Install the VMWare View Agent with the option for USB Redirection set to not install/disabled.
3. If you did install both the Kaspersky Device Control component and VMWare View Agent with USB Redirection, you must disable the VMWare View Virtual USB Hub "vmusb" service in the registry as noted above or it will hang on the next reboot/restart.
NOTE: This will have the same impact as installing VMWware View Agent with USB Redirection disabled/unselected as the required services will not be running and USB Redirection cannot occur.
We have opened incidents with both Kaspersky and VMWare and are in the process of providing information in hopes of getting a co-existing resolution. However, I wanted to post this information in the event someone else is having the same issue.

VMware View Client "run as administrator"

Hi All,

Anyone seen an issue where before a client can connect then need to run the VMware View Client by right clicking and selecting "run as administrator"? UAC is disabled, an uninstall and reinstall have been attempted.

There's no issue with the VDI deployment itself (apparently) but this user simply can't connect without running as admin.

Any ideas?

Thanks

How to disable Unity Touch?

The desktops in our new VDI environment are managed with RES Workspace Manager, thereby creating a new start menu and using the RES Workspace shell. When using a VDI on an iPad, the Unity Touch utility shows the complete Windows startmenu, thereby providing users access to item's I don't want them to see. So I'd rather disable the Unity Touch feature.
Is there a way to disable the Unity Touch on iPads? e.g. some registry key on the server?

VMs crash during login process

Hello,

I use VMWare Horizon 5.2 and Windows 7 X64 VM.

When I log into a VM from any kind of client (Thin client, PC, iPad,...) the VM crash during the login process.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Pools / Users

Is it possible to specify the user for a specific pool?  For example, we have a pool that has only a single machine but it must be logged into as a specific username (to support oooolllddddd software).  Can I entitle this pool to multiple users to all share the same credentials for that one pool?  Only 1 would be able to login at a time, which is fine.  We use RDP for this today, I'd just like to migrate it into View.
