VMware Horizon View 6 - Failover Site Options

$

Hi -

I have two VMware environments.

1) Server Virtualization -  I use SAN replication to get the data offsite and I use VMware SRM. This is a good setup.

2) Desktop Virtualization - I have View Horizon 6. This environment has the Connection servers, the vCenter Server, and the linked-clone Windows 7 Desktops. Everyone connects to the VDI environment via Wyse Zero Clients using PCoIP. The Desktops are single use and refreshed daily. All use data is mapped to other servers in the virtual server environment using Persona Management. I can use SAN replication to get the data offsite, but haven't done so at this time.

Can someone give me a few options for failover of my VDI environment?  I think my VDI environment is basic with just 3 primary virtual servers + linked clones, and I feel there might be a more economical solution than buying SRM bundle with 25 licenses. I'm not concerned with the networking and SAN pieces, because I'm confident I have that under control.

Thank you.

Black Screen on Manual Pool Using a VM that was a P2V

Hello All,

I had to P2V a Windows 7 computer and then made it a Manual  pool computer in Horizon View version 6.  I went thru and got rid of all the hidden devices, made sure the correct video card is being used and still i get a black screen when logging into view.  RDP works fine but PCOIP does not.  Looked at all teh KB's and thiings look ok.  I'm a bit stuck.  Any thoughts??   Thanks

I also discovered that if I take the desktop and change it to a window that the desktop comes on.  When i make the monitor Full Screen or multi-monitor it goes black again.

Horizon View - Agent status "Disconnected"

I have a dedicated linked clone pool for about 50 users. The pool is set to refresh on logout. When a user logs out, the status of their desktop in View administrator changes to "Disconnected." The machine doesn't refresh itself, it just sits there in that state. If the user tries to log back in, they get an error message stating that there are no available desktops in the pool (since they are assigned only that one). I have to manually reset the VM in order for it to become available again. Has anyone run into this before?

Server is running version 6.1, and agent version is on 6.0.2

VMware View 6 & Streched Cluster Support

Hi,

I know this topic is around since years and the answer if its a supported was always no.

I haven´t read anything for a while now about it. The point why it was (and maybe still is) not supportet was the latency sensitivity of the JMS AFAIK. If you have a connection server on to sites and the data replication is not fast enough it could happen that two users get asigned to the same desktop in a floating pool.

I wonder if there could be any problems in an environment if all desktops are dedicated & persistent, where the above scenario can´t happen?

Thanks,

Mario

Thin Client to Zero Client roaming, View 6 Agent, The connection to the remote computer has been closed due to a new connection request

The connection to the remote computer has been closed due to a new connection request.

This is the VMware View Client error message on the thin client, once the session has been roamed to the zero client. The actual transfer of session information seems to work, that is, the virtual desktop pops up on the zero client without issue. What is left on the thin client though, is an error prompt from the View Client running on the embedded OS (XP w/ View 4.6 Client). The VM is Win 7 x64 with the View 6 Agent. We also use Imprivata for our SSO and badge/tap-in management.

Interestingly, roaming from thin client to thin client works fine and produces no errors -and of course zero to zero produces no errors

It does not seem to matter if the roam happens while the session is still active on the thin client, or if it has been disconnected/locked first, it will still produce an error in the VMware View Client once a roam to a zero client takes place.

I had hoped to do a search for this error and find that it is common with documented solutions -but apparently I am one of the lucky few that have run into this.

Any ideas?

vDGA-Nvidia K1 Configuration

$

Hello,

my actual configuration is:

- Horizon View 5.3

- ESXi 5.5.0 with Nvidia K1

- Windows7 64 bit VM with K1 configured in passthrough

I'm having some performance issues but really not sure if the problem is of the configuration or of the rendering software.

On my pools I set the 3D option as "Manage using vSphere Client", and on the VM I set for the Video card:

- Specify custom settings

- 3D Render "Automatic"

- 3D Graphics some disable some enable (I really don't see a great difference...)

I installed  NVIDIA driver on the VM and, running "dxdiag" I can see that I'm using correctly my K1 (I even run the different NVIDIA tools to adjust my settings correctly).

When I go in the "Device Manager" I find both the K1 and the Vmware SVGA 3D (infact In Display Options I can see 2 Displays, but I "use" only the primary, and I suppose it's the K1 because of what the dxdiag command says me)

Am I using the K1 at there best or I have to change my configuration ?

My principal doubt is on the "Automatic" Configuration on the 3D Render Option; I suppose that having a K1 in passthrough he uses always that adapter (as if I had set "Hardware").

At the begining I choose "Automatic" instead of "Hardware" option because in the second case I was not able to enable the 3D Graphics (and even because with the dxdiag comand I was sure I was using my K1).

Hope someone can help, thanks in advance

usb redirection for windows 2008 r2 - we need it now

$

Hello all,

We have classrooms based on thin clients (some of them old XP PC's) running rdp to Windows 2008 R2.

I have a budget for upgrade with a very short deadline. My prefered option is to buy Zero Clients (teradici), connect them to the existing servers (RDS with PCOIP).

This would give us a practical interim solution till we can set up a provisioned environment.

We set up a test environment, and this works great for everything but for the flash drives.

The only service we need is for students to be able access their usb "disk on key"s storage. But this service is critical.

After searching the cause of the problem I found Peter Brown's excellent white paper, which states:

USB Redirection and RDS-Hosted Applications and Desktops

Horizon with View does not yet support USB redirection with RDS-hosted applications and desktops, which are

multi-session. USB redirection is supported only with single-session View.

So here is the question. What does mean "not yet" in the above sentence ? If a solution is in sight (till the beginning of the academic year) we can go for this. If not, I really don't know how to work around it.

Any help or insight much appreciated !

Pass AD/Login Credentials Automatically

$

Looking to have the currently logged-in user's credentials automatically used within VMware Horizon Client for Mac when going to connect to all/specific server connections. The logins are AD based and would be pointing to a VM that is also part of our domain. I see this option in the Windows client, but have not been able to see how to have that passed on.

Is this possible through any application settings or scripting?

Network label on linked clones don't get get updated after recompose

Hi,

I'm trying to move my floating linked clone desktops to a new subnet.  So what I did is delete the snapshot, change the network adapter settings on the golden image to match the new VLAN, create a new snapshot and point my pool to use it.

After the recompose, my linked clones still have the adapter set to the incorrect VLAN.

Am I missing something?

Thx

View client RTAV - redirect multiple Speakers

Hello everyone,

we want to use (RTAV) Realtime Audio Video for Softphones on the View Clients. It's working well with the Headset.

The Problem is the ring tone: incomming phone calls should ring on the PC-speaker insteat of the Headphone-Speaker... Is there a way to redirect an additional Speaker?

At the moment RTAV is redirecting only the default speaker...

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

I have a Thin Client (HP t620) and added 2 UHD Monitors via DisplayPort to it. The TC runs on Windows 8 Embedded and recognizes the resolution of 3840x2160 for each Monitor.

But when I connect to my Virtual Machine (Windows 7 Enterprise x64) via PCoIP, only one of the Monitor has a picture and the other one stays Black.

Now I wonder, where is my Bottleneck?

Is it the VM that hasn't enough recources to provide 2 UHD Monitors with input?

Is it the Horizon that limits the resolution (At the Pool Settings is a Maximum resolution of 1920x1200 defined but that doesn't seem to bother the working UHD Screen)?

Is it the Pool Settings that Limits the output?

Does anyone have an Idea how to resolve this?

Updating Windows 10 Enterprise 64 from 10074 to 10130 fails with LSI Paravirtual disk & View Agent gives BSOD on Ctrl+Alt+Ins\Del

I kept trying to update from build 10074 to 10130 and it would boot to the recovery wizard. Booting back in to windows it would report error 0x8024001e.

The VM had paravirtual disk controller. I added a second disk on SCSI 2:1 and changed that controller to LSI SAS and booted up and configured the disk. Then I shutdown and changed the paravirtual disk to SAS. Then the update worked fine. Could be a coincidence but I tried half a dozen times before.

Once updated, I changed back to paravirtual and things were fine, at least with boot up.

Trying to log in while View Agent 6.0.2-2331487 or 6.1.1-2769635 were installed results in a BSOD with error DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (kbdclass.sys). Removing the view agent and Ctrl+Alt+Del works fine but now we cant use horizon view on Windows 10 Tech Preview. So sad.

So sad.

Recompose Desktop Issue

Hello,

I have a situation with recompose different VDI pools.

I had to expand the hard drive of the existing parent vm.

Because the existing parent had so many snapshots, I had to create a full clone of the parent and then expand the hard drive.

First off the environment consist of the following components:

ESXi 5.0.0 build 1311175

vCenter Server 5.0.0 Build 455964

vSphere Client 5.0.5.0.0.37933

View Horizon 5.1.0 Build 704644

View Compose 3.0.0.691993

vShield Manager 5.0.2- 791471

VMware Tools version 8.6.15 Build 2495133

We have 8 different VDI Pools (Finance, Management, Customer Service, etc....)

Once I had created my full clone from the snapshots, I started pointing the pool to the new parent and new snapshot in vCenter Settings of the pool once you edit it.

As it says "Changing the vCenter settings affects newly ceated virtual machines only.  The new settings do not affect existing virtual machines."

I tried to recompose a specific pool with one specific parent and snapshot.  Worked Successfully.

I tried to recompose another pool with the same parent and snapshot because both pools use the same parent and snapshot and I was unsuccessful.

The error I get is: View Composer Fault: Could not find VC object of type Virtual Machine and id . Please check the master VM/snapshot or its replica for VM name.

Provisioning error occurred for Machine name: Refit operation resync failed

In the VMware documentation

VMware KB: View Manager Admin console displays the error: Error during provisioning: Unexpected VC fault from View C…

So although the parent and snapshot wasn't corrupted because I was able to successful recompose using the same parent and snapshot.

I deleted the parent and snapshot and recreated he full clone and tried again.

Got the same error message:

View Composer Fault: Could not find VC object of type Virtual Machine and id . Please check the master VM/snapshot or its replica for VM name.

Provisioning error occurred for Machine name: Refit operation resync failed

I was able to recompose a completely different pool with completely different full clone (parent, snapshot).

VMware thinks the composer server is under provisioned for resources.

It had 2 CPU's 2GB of RAM but I was able to recompose one complete pool with those spec.

But for argument sake I left it at 2 CPU's and increased the RAM to 4GB but still got the error message.

Mware Documentation Library

The case is still opened with VMware.

View Load Testing: Ways to script commands to applications?

$

Hello,

I'm designing a simple load testing tool for a View environment and so far its going pretty well.  Using command line arguments and some Powershell, I'm able to recurse through a list of users and connect multiple sessions to a View server and open a desktop and some RDS App sessions.  My question is: Is there any way built in to pass a script in the command-line arguments that will execute some commands on that desktop or RDS App session?  Nothing crazy, just type in Notepad, open a few programs, save a doc or two - the usual stuff to generate regular workloads.

I know VMware and third party companies have some tools for this, but they don't specifically meet my needs without extensive configuration and lots of hooks into our systems.  I'm trying to keep the footprint of this test as small as possible so a simple Powershell script is the way I'd like to proceed.  I'd assume Powershell has some method of doing this, but I'm no scripting guru nor is this a PS forum, so I was hoping there was something that already exists when I call the View connection that I could use.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi, hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.  We would like to know of any IOS/Android devices connecting to our view environment.  Is there any reports/sql queries we can run to find this information? We are using View 5.2 with latest feature pack. Thanks

Horizon View Floating Pool Multiple Sessions

$

So I've researched and am pretty sure I have the answer I need, but wanted to verify here that I'm correct.

I have a user who wants to be able to have multiple sessions of the same user logging into the same floating pool.  They have the "Allow multiple sessions" option enabled for the pool, but no matter what they try they are not able to log into multiple sessions from the same physical computer.

I did find an old forum post that basically gave this same scenario with an older version of View, but nothing recently.

What happens when I'm testing is that the current session i'm logged into gets logged off and a new session is created in the 2nd View client.

Also, I don't want to use RDP or have multiple screens on the same desktop.  I want different view sessions from the same floating pool, logged in with the same user, all running on the same physical machine.

If someone comes up with a way for me, that would be awesome.  I'm not counting on any miracles, however.

Deploying VMware Horizon client for Linux

$

Does anyone know where (or if) I can dig up proper packages (Deb and RPM) for VMware Horizon client for Linux?

I work in an organisation where Linux popularity is accelerating on all systems, so this is becoming a bit of a big deal.

I managed to get an old version (2.2) from Canonical's partner repositories but it's getting a bit old now. The VMware-provided bundle packages made available are just a royal pain to install and maintain at scale, especially when all the popular Linux distros have a very robust package and repository management built-in. Sysadmins deploying the View client don't want a pretty GUI installer, we want something that can be done at scale.

Also, why is there only x86 support? This is 2015 and almost everything in Linux is x86-64 now because it just works. VMware, please actually put a little effort into the Linux client rather than trying to reinvent software installation processes.

What do other customers do to work around all this? Are better packages available?

When VMWare View 6.1 was announced back in mid March, a tech preview for a Chromebook client was announced. We just upgraded our environment from 6.0 to 6.1.1.

Does anyone know when the Chromebook client will be released? Love to try it out, even if it is beta
