Determine View agent version from the remote VDI machine

$

I know that I can find information about the View client connected to a hosted desktop from the target's registry by looking at the key HKCU\Volatile Environment. In that key I can find valuable information like the client's IP address (ViewClient_IP_Address) or the client's computer name (ViewClient_Machine_Name). However, I cannot get the version of the View Agent installed on the client this way.

Is there any way to get the View Agent version from within the hosted desktop (the VDI machine)?

Disable domain selection in view client

Hi,

we have installed a multi-tentant installation of vmware view (horizon version 5.2) for multiple customers.

we have connected all domains with a trust to our root cloud domain.

is it possible to disable the domain selection on the view client login screen???

thats very bad because everyone who wants to login can look on the domain selection and could see all domains (and so all other customers who are on the cloud)

Is there a possiblity to disable this selection??

best regards,

Strange View 5.3.1 Domain Join Sysprep issue.

I'm having a weird issue and I'm pulling my hair out.  I have a new pool of win7 machines that is not joining the domain at all when composing or recomposing.  I'm using sysprep with a customization specification that I've used for previous pools without issues.  I did a regular clone and used the customization specification and it all went well.  I can fight my way through and get them joined to the domain via vcenter but thats not workable long term.  Out of curiosity I logged into both while they were waiting to start their sysprep (right after they were cloned) and grabbed the sysprep.xml files.  They are identical but with one major and important difference in the identification section of the sysprep.xml file. The view composer one, just looks like it wants to join the workgroup while the vcenter clone shows it wants to join the domain.  (Details below)  Is there a difference in the way composer handles the customization than vCenter?

This  looks like what I'd expect (via the regular vcenter clone, details removed):

<Identification>

            <JoinDomain>domain.org</JoinDomain>

            <Credentials>

               <Username>admin@domain.org</Username>

               <EncryptedPassword>8..........892</EncryptedPassword>

               <Domain>domain.org</Domain>

            </Credentials>

         </Identification>

This is what the one on the linked clone desktops has, seems like a "well thars yer problem" kinda thing:

<Identification>

            <JoinWorkgroup>WORKGROUP</JoinWorkgroup>

         </Identification>

Any help/info is much appreciated.

Renaming AD User Account

Hello -

As part of Office365 migration we will renaming over 1000 AD usernames. However, when changing AD usernames View still has the old AD accounts associated to persistent View desktops so users will not be able to login, obviously.  This can be changed manually within View Admin console but is there anyway to update View to reflect the change in usernames?

Thank you.

USB on View Client with windows 7 update KB2992611

Hi all,

I m running all VDI on a thinClient in PCOIP with view client.

Today my VDIs running on Windows 7 has been updated. After restart, smart card, printers and stick usb doesn't work.

I have upgrading the view agent to 5.1.3 with no effect.

After a few investigations, the reason seem to be the Microsoft security update KB2992611.

So I deinstall it and the USB works again.

Am I the only one with this problem?

Thanks for answers

(sorry for my poor english)

Persona Management sync issues for certain files/folders (broken pinned icons)

$

I recently noticed that users who logged off too quickly from a linked clone pool after their first session would be greeted by white/blank icons for the default pinned applications on the task bar.  The result from the user perspective is similar/identical to:

Broken pinned icons

Re: Windows 7 Quick Launch Error WEIRD

http://vmtoday.com/2013/01/blank-quicklaunch-icons-on-view-desktop/

However, the details are slightly different and the fixes are already in place.

Brief background on the setup:  I am using Horizon View 5.2 w/ FP2.  The ViewPM.ADM template is attached to the GPO and the "Rom local settings folders" option is enabled.  The Profile upload interval was 10 minutes but was reduced to 5 minutes for testing.  Profile folders are shared/permissioned properly and this seems to be a failure with the persona management software on the pool VM as the data will eventually be uploaded if the user does not log out before the first (possibly second) sync.  The pool is set to refresh immediately after logoff.  Client Side Caching is disabled so KB2016416 should not apply.  The pool was creating using the deployment guide and the provided scripts from VMware, etc.  However, the client firewall was re-enabled so HTML Access in Feature Pack 2 will work.

To test I used an affected pool and deleted my existing profile on the file server.  After logging in to the pool VM, the username.V2 folder was created in the Persona repository share.  At this point, the folder is blank.  The VM works as expected without problems.  If I examine the local profile in the VM, all of the folders and files affected by this issue exist (C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick launch).

I let 5 minutes pass and Persona Management does an initial sync creating what looks to be a full sync.  However, if I examine the "\\server\share\username.V2\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\" folder, it only contains desktop.ini and two shortcuts ('Show desktop' and 'Switch between windows').  Missing are the actual shortcuts for the pinned items and a few other folders ("User Pinned" and "User Pinned\TaskBar") including more shortcuts.

If I let 5 more minutes pass for another sync, the missing files will appear.  At this point if I log off, all is well (unless there are other files that PM fails to copy).  Running "openfiles /query /v" on the file server shows more files being sync'd during logoff.

If I log off before all of the files are successfully synchronized, the next time I log on I'll be greeted with white icons for the pinned programs.

Version 5.1.1 claimed to have resolved a problem similar to this when a pool was set to refresh immediately, so perhaps there is yet another related bug?

I have opened a support case but posting here in case anyone else has experienced and resolved this issue.

I am having an issue with the install of View Composer hanging agter I put in the ODBC info.  I am installing on the vCenter server (4GB Ram, Quad core processor, and 15K scsi drives).  I have created the Database on the same SQL Express instance that vCenter is installed to (on the local box), and the ODBC connection test perfect.  I let the install sit for two days to see if it would complete.  Any ideas?  TIA

Solidworks 2014 EULA License Agreement Suppression

$

Good morning.

I am the VDI system administrator for a university. We currently use Solidworks 2013 in a VMware linked clone VDI environment. We currently have one gold image which is pushed out to a pool that multiple students could potentially use. These linked clones are randomly assigned, and every time a user logs out the linked clone is refreshed.  I have been given a mandate to remove all pop-ups from any programs installed on said images.

With the 2013 program, this was not an issue. One acceptance of the EULA was sufficient. When I pushed that acceptance to the default image via sysprep, then every user going forward on a linked clone will not get that prompt. Here is the registry key from the Solidworks 2013 EULA, for example:

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3201...\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2013\Security]

"Lic Agreement Accepted"="Yes"

With the installation of Solidworks 2014, however, that license agreement prompt has changed with regards to how the registry displays the user's acceptance. After doing some registry mining, I was able to locate what I believe are the keys which affect these prompts. Here are those keys:

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3201...\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2014\Security]

"EULA Accepted 2014 SP2.0 TEST-LFSW-1 onfire247"="Yes"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2014\Security]

"EULA Accepted 2014 SP2.0 TEST-LFSW-1 onfire247"="Yes"

Looking at these keys reveals the problem. TEST-LFSW-1 is the computer name generated from the linked clone test group, and onfire247 is the test login I use to access the pool. In other words, if there is ever a new machine name or user name, it will prompt the popup again and add a second entry to the list. Considering the number of students we have who could potentially access it, and the number of possible machine names, pre-loading registry keys will not resolve this.

Does anyone have a work around for this?

I have tried adding generic names for those specific fields without success. I also considered scripting the VMware volatile environment key that shows the user's name, but that will not help with the machine name. Additionally, I don't think that option will work since the HKEY_USER key can change.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is VMware is working on making the USB redirection faster?

Is VMware is working on making the USB redirection faster, In our environment with view 5.3.2 and with ESXi and Vcenter 5.5 there is time lag of about 5-10 minutes and some time even after that the USB does not show, We have to unplug the USB and plug it back again to make it work. Is there any workaround available to make it fast.

View ThinApp / Horizon Workspace ThinApp

Hi all,

Just new to the Horizon platform however am a little confused between the View and Horizon ThinApp on when to use it and when not to use it. I understand that the current View Desktop ThinApp packages needs to be updated to work with Horizon workspace but does the mean we need two sets of packages? One for View Desktop and one for Workspace. Or we able to get away with this by using the Horizon Workspace agent within View Desktop we have?

Rather avoid having to have two sets of packages.

Thanks in advance.

Clients lose connection after upgrading to new Connection Broker 6

All our 300 VMs worked fine until we upgraded our connection server to newest version 6.x.

Before we had no session disconnection for a long time but now after lunch time they randomly loses the connection.

When we try to immediately logon again it does not work. only after 5 mins it went well.

It happend on Zero Clients and refurbished old PCs with view client.

the other connection server on a different site works well, but connection to it is not fast enought and also the users can´t change the logon server on refurbished PCs.

Does anyone know this issue ? And what can we adjust to get rid of this issue ?

VMWare Horizon View 2.3.0 Build 1551379 Cached Password?

$

We are using HP T510 Thin Clients Windows Embedded joined to our Network.

With Horizon View 2.3.0 Build 1551379 installed.

When a User allows his Network Credentials to expire and then changes his password Horizon View then fails to Auto Connect using the stored credentials.

If you disable Auto Connect and manually use the new credentials everything works fine.  If you then reselect auto connect the logon fails again.

If you change your password prior to expiration everything works fine.

It only is an issue with users that let passwords expire.

Is there a way to clear the Cached password?

Or, what is the solution to this issue.

Thanks,

Dale

Connecting to VDI using PCoIP shows a black screen and the disconnect the session

Hello all,

We are deploying a Horizon View 6.0 solution with Connection and Security Server using an F5 to load balance the services. As to this point of the implementation, pretty everything works except PCoIP connections over WAN, the F5 is working fine with everything so I don't think the issue is there, and the firewalls have rules to permit port 4172 both TCP and UDP. The connection behaviour is like thisÑ

HTML (blast) internal -> WORKS

HTML (blast) external (over wan) -> WORKS

PCoIP (VMware Horizon Client) internal -> WORKS

RDP (VMware Horizon Client) internal -> WORKS

RDP (VMware Horizon Client) external (over wan)-> WORKS

PCoIP (VMware Horizon Client) external (over wan)-> doesn't WORK, show a black screen adn after a minute shows the following message: PCoIP connection failed with error 'The connection to the remote computer ended.'.

I have checked everything and I don't know what else I can do. If someone of you have been througth this I really appreciate your guiadance!

Thanks!

Hi There, we just setup our first Horizon 6 platform with Composer manager and connect it to vCenter, then few days later we found out that our composer doesn't work and now we are not able to start service at all, all that we see in event viewer is - A timeout was reached while waiting for the VMware Horizon View composer service to connect.
