Horizon View Client v2.2 Forward Has Issues with Bad DNS Servers?

$

So recently we had some DNS issues at some locations and it brought down access via the Horizon View Client.  Each location had three DNS servers configured and only the primary was having issues.  There were no other software having issues resolving addresses that I know of.

So here is what I found in my testing...

- If the primary server is completely down and not responding, Horizon View Client can resolve the host address fine.

- If the primary server is up but not responding in a proper manner to requests, Horizon View Client cannot resolve the host name.

-Horizon View Client 5.4.0.1219906 handles the issue appropriately and can resolve the host.

-Horizon View Client 2.2.0.13999, 2.3.3.18259, and 3.1.0.21879 all fail to resolve the host

It would be nice if the newer versions handled bad DNS responses as well as the old client did.

Please share if you know anything.

Thanks

Horizon View 5.2 Administrator

I am attempting to setup another Horizon View 5.2 administrator.  In this case, I am using an Active Directory group instead of a specific AD account.

The new administrator I am working with is able to make changes to View, but as soon as he attempts to spin out a new Linked Clone Pool, he gets an error: "Provisioning error occurred on Pool <Pool-Name-Here> because available frree disk space is reserved for linked clones."

When I do the exact same function with the exact same settings, the pool is created.

Question: Other than the (obvious) account setup in the View GUI (he is setup as an Administrator at the Root level), what permissions are required in both AD and in vCenter to allow this new person to administer View fully?  (If you come bback with RTFM, I'm going to find you and hunt you down... I've been doing this for 2 days now and not finding anything in the manuals except for the settings for the service accounts required for View to talk to vCenter, Connection and Security servers (which are all fine thankyouverymuch) :-P )

Persona Management 6 sync issue

Hi all. After upgrading to Horizon View 6 and recomposing desktop pool users get 0 KB files of all types. However, on a file share files are ok.

If I copy files to desktop from a file share after a few days or after a first log off users again get 0 KB files. Where can I must start my investigation?

I am trying to find the parameter in the Update-manualPool cmdlet to set the Enable automatic assignment to No (False). Has anyone tried this before?

sample command I am running.

Get-Pool -pool_id BrentTest_Pool | Update-ManualPool -pool_id BrentTest_Pool -isUserResetAllowed $true -allowProtocolOverride $false -AssignOnFirstLogon $false

I did run the get-help on the cmdlet but looks like there isn't anything listed but I though I would throw this out there anyway.

We are running View 6.01

Thanks for any help!

odd profile path issues with Persona Management in View 5.2

Hi All,

This past summer we migrated persona management profiles from one Windows file server to another and I went in and modified the Active Directory GPO to point to the new profile path (and recomposed). For the past 2 months or so everything worked fine until this week when some users (not all) complained that they were receiving a pop up at Windows logon that said they were using a temporary Windows profile. A "GPRESULT /R" from a desktop in question shows that the roaming profile path is pointing to the old file server UNC!!!! I checked the GPO to make sure it was pointing to the correct path and it was. What we did find was an entry in the registry of the master image that was pointing to the old UNC path, it was...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Policies -> VMware, Inc. -> VMware VDM -> Persona Management -> Service -> CentralProfileStore

What install/config/whatever created this entry? We edited it to point to the new UNC path and are recomposing soon (which will hopefully fix the issue) but we don't know what created that entry and have no idea why it only appears to be an issue on some desktops in the pool. We inherited this Persona Management setup from a consultant so we know little about it, we thought that all settings were controlled via either a local group policy or an AD group policy.

Thanks

Can someone confirm if this is supported/ not breaking compliance from MS SPLA point of view?

As a service provider ( USA) we are planning to host full VDI solution with windows 7 on horizon view platform and charge customer per virtual desktop basis. Customer will be bringing their own windows 7 and VDA licenses.

Please advise and share your thoughts..

Cloud Pod - VIPA/Inter-Pod timeouts for brokering

Hi,

(I have logged this as a support case w/VMware, just mentioning here in case anyone can help)

*****

<Company> are running a Horizon View 6 Cloud Pod Architecture.

4x Connection Servers in the primary site/Pod

4x Connection Servers in the secondary site/Pod

Connection Servers are not linked to Security Servers but using F5 APM, so are running in Direct Mode.

Virtual Desktop guest OS: Windows 8.1, Horizon 6 agent v6.

Pools are configured as Dedicated, due to full-clone/persistent desktop requirements.

Issue:

VIPA is showing intermittant timeouts for inter-pod brokering tasks, which seems to result in a user account being entitled to a desktop on *BOTH* sites. Once this occurs, the user cannot log in as the pools are Dedicated and a double-up of entitlements is not allowed. This is remediated by unassigning the user from a desktop on one of the sites, or (if that returns an "internal error") deleting one of the desktops.

Example errors:

Connection Servers all have 4vCPU/10GB memory. Utilisation of the Connection Servers is low/basically idle.

The Virtual Desktop guests do have an issue with CPU utilisation, due to an on-going issue with Internet Explorer. On a session disconnect, the virtual desktops lock out at 100% CPU utilisation.

VMware KB 2080760 details steps to increase the timeout values for VIPA requests. However, the two timeouts in particular (pae-RequestTimeout and pae-SubRequestTimeout) are noted as "VMware recommends that you do not change these attribute values".

Seeking advice as to whether we should increase the timeout values by 10 seconds each - pae-RequestTimeout from 20s to 30s, pae-SubRequestTimeout from 10s to 20s.

Inter-site latency is 10ms. No packet loss/networking issues we are aware of.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :-)

How to have Headphones and Speakers working at the same time

$

Hi all,

We are doing a pilot to our customer for 50 VDI clients. Client device is WinXP SP3/Win7 PC. Guest OS is Win7 with PCoIP protocol . The issue is related to audio redirection when using headsets. In brief, customer uses a softphone and need to have audio outs in both the headset and pc speaker, so that the operator hear the phone ring even without the headset worn . This behavior is working using the physical pc with its own o.s., but with virtual desktop, audio is redirect only to one of two channels (or headset or pc speaker).

The headset is correctly seen by host and guest o.s. and the issue is not strictly related to softphone software, but in general, to redirect audio output to two channels (headphone and pc speaker) at the same time.

The environment is:

Host o.s. WinXP SP3 or Win7

Guest o.s. Win7

Horizon infrastructure (connection srv, composer, agent, client 6.0.0)

Horizon Feature Pack and Teradici audio driver

USB headset

Does anyone have any idea to solve the problem ?

thanks in advance

Best regards

Davide

Hello,

we're offering our customer a IaaS solution based on vCloud Director.

One of them asked us an org to host his own H. View Platform.

Usually I'm quite scared when nesting in production environment, but I'd like an opinion from community.

Thanks a lot.

Determining the IP and Name of the end point device connected to a virtual desktop

Is there a way to determine what is the IP address or network name of the device that is connected to a virtual desktop?  I have a client with Wyse thin clients that use random names and would like to know where this information can be found for remote management.

Thanks.

Cannot print to local usb printer from zero clent

I have viewsonice SC55 zero clients.  One of them has a LJ2420 hooked up locally via usb.  For the life of me it does not print.  I have tried the thinprint driver and same result.  I have installed the driver on the vm in use by the zero client and it does not get installed.  The only thing that works is if you you keep switching the usb port on the zero client.  But I can't have the user do this all the time.  When I unplug the usb and put it back in, it installs to the DOT4 usb printer port.  I am accessing the vm as an administrator.

Am I missing something?

View Composer Fault - DuplicateName

Horizon View 6

View Composer Standalone

ESXi 5.5

Got one I just can't figure out and we're sort of new to View.

The other day there were two desktops that were having issues.  "Someone" deleted them from View Administrator in the hopes that they will get provisioned back to the pool.  I have about 20 desktops all together.

vSphere successfully replicates the snapshot to the new VM desktop and named properly.  However, View Composer states there's a duplicate name and of course disables provisioning on the pool.

The vm referenced in the error message does not exist in the ADAM database nor does it exists in the Composer database (used SviConfig to determine).  It is not in Active Directory either.

I get this message after clicking on the Pool in the Summary page.

------------------------------

Error during provisioning:

Any suggestions would be fantasic!

Security server certificates and naming

$

Hello

I'm creating a security server to test out some Horizon features. My question is about certificates. I want to keep it as secure as possible. If I name the security server different to the external URL will this cause issues with certification? So my server would be say S132985SV1 and my external URL is access.amazingcompany.com. Would View be ok with a different external certificate name (the name on the certificate would be the URL which would be different to the physical server name). Or will I have to name the security server the same as my external URL "access.amazingcompany.com" for the certificate to work properly?

Thanks

Why does the Mac View Client no longer take only one monitor when full screen?

$

I recently switched my Mac view client from 1.7 to 3.1, and I was horrified to find out that when the client is full-screened, that it takes both of my monitors and I could find no setting to change that. This should be optional, and not a forced default. I understand the need to support multiple monitors, but I do not understand the reason for forcing people to use multiple monitors when in full-screen mode.

What is the logic behind this? It makes no sense to me why they decided to force this on people instead of giving an option to turn it off.

Hi
We have esx server with view security server, view connection server, vcenter server and few desktop pools. Where do I install persona management ? We are using view 6.

And also within the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\extras\GroupPolicyFiles folder there isnt any group policy templates; is this normal or I need to install something ?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

VDI Desktops extremely slow storage vmotion

$

I currently have a ticket in for this but I thought I'd post as well and see if anyone has run into a similar issue.

I have both linked clone pools and persistent desktop view horizon vm's.  Storage vMotion for these is slow no matter which storage I am using (we have FC and NFS).  A 40gb machine will take upwards of 30 minutes to an hour to move from one datastore to another that thats, FC storage to FC storage, NFS to NFS, or FC to NFS, or NFS to FC.  We do not see this same issue on the same storage on our production cluster server side. A 1tb server will take around the same amount of time but anything in the 100'sgb range is within 5 minutes.

Our hardware is all unified computing Cisco UCS blades and all the configurations appear to be matching across the board.  I'm wondering if there's anything specific to view that causes storage vmotion to be slower on average and it's something I will just have to accept or if there's a setting I need to look at or settings to compare between the two that I haven't maybe thought of?

Thanks,

Changing password after expiration notice

Running vSphere 5.1.0

View Administrator 5.1
Windows 7 32-bit desktop machines

Wyse P25 zero clients - firmware 4.1.2

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit

Both persistent & non-persistent pools

We have been running into this issue since going into production with our virtual environment (about 6 months now). I have finally documented the process that is causing us trouble. The issue is when a user doesn't change their password before their expiration date, they then become locked out and forced to change their password at log on but the process does not properly work. I went through this process with a test ID I knew was past its expiration. I attempted to log into the zero client and it immediately brought me to the screen with the username already filled in, Domain filled in, and the open fields for Old password: New password: and Confirm new password:. After entering the information I receive an error message stating "unknown user name or bad password", the only option is to click ok. It then brought me back to the screen to create a new password only now that this point the username field was blank and greyed out so I couldn't manually enter it. The user typically doesn't realize it and attempts to enter the old and new passwords again assuming they typed it in wrong the first time. After doing so, I then received the message "authentication can not proceed (missing parameter)" due to the user name filed being blank. Again the only option is to click OK, it then ended the process and brought me back to the first screen for the connection server field. Please see the attached images from documenting the process (forgive the quality, had to take them with my cell phone since there was no where to paste a screenshot) this is all what we have been hearing the users report. The even stranger thing about all of this is that it does infact change the password to what the user typed into the New password fields, but there is nothing hinting at this for the user to know, I only know because I have tested it many times. But usually by the time the user calls me to report their issues they have tried it multiple times and we cannot figure out which password the account is currently set at resulting in myself having to reset their password in Active Directory. *Note that when I choose the option "User must change password at next logon" in AD, this issue does not occur, it is only when the user passes their expiration date.
