Horizon View 5.3.2: can't assign user to a top level domain virtual desktop

We recently added a new top level domain to our Horizon View Administrator infrastructure.

We are able to create a linked-clone pool in this domain, but strangely we can't assign a user to the virtual desktop created. In fact when we search a user in this domain the search result is empty.

The other domains we use are not top level and they work properly.

Any hints to fix it up?

Regards, Simone

View 6 with older View Client software?

Hi,

I'm currently running View 5.2 and I would like to upgrade to View 6. However, for remote connections, we are using Juniper SSL. If a computer has the latest View Client, or the 2.x client, they cannot connect to their desktop. They receive the message

View Client is not installed on your computer. You will now be redirected to a location configured by the administrator to download and install the client.

This is documented on Juniper's page. http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB28754

On VMware's compatibility page, it shows View 6 is only compatible with Clients 2.2, 2.3 and 3.1

I know those are the "officially supported" clients, but will the old 5.4 client work well with View 6?

Horizon View 6 - a few users must attempt to log in repeadly

Usually by the fourth attempt, they are authenticated. Otherwise they get "unknown user name or bad password" and eventually "Maximum login attempts exceeded".

Interestingly, in the connections server security logs, sometimes there are no audit failed or succeeded entries for these people. Its almost like they are authenticating to some phantom connections server. Any ideas?

Connection server 6.0.0 build-1884746

After scouring the KB's, this is the closest thing I could come up with:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2035954

These do not appear to be relevant:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2001703

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2021808

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2052613

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2086682

I was able to find client logs and for these attempts, there was the event log faulure "Unknown user name or bad password". But I swear it was typed correctly. Looks like it took 11 attempts here:

Hello

I have detected that since I upgraded my view connection server versión, all of my Wyse (R10 or T10 model) every day at different times close the RDP connection.

I receive in the wyse log this message "16:54:09 RDP: Server initiated disconnect"

I have the problem in all áreas of the Factory, I mean, is not a network problem...

Can anybody help me?

Thank you in advance.

USB check scanner not working from zero client

I have installed an Epson TM-S1000 check scanner which is working properly from a linked clone if the device is attached directly to the ESX host and attached to the virtual desktop via vSphere, but does not work if plugged into the zero client.  I have tried a variety of steps to resolve this without any results.  This is confusing as I do not understand why the OS (Win 7) would see these any differently based on where the USB is connected.  Windows recognizes the device when it is attached via the client but it doesn't function correctly.  I have opened a ticket with Teradici as well.

At the root, why would the OS react differently to a USB device attached to host versus zero client; and what can I do to correct it?

PCoIP Gateway port 4172 certificate/protocol issues

$

Just got my quarterly security scans back, and while I thought I had my Security Server configured correctly, apparently I still have issues with the PCoIP port/cert.

The scans show the PCoIP gateway on 4172 responding to SSLv3 and not providing a valid cert. I've double and triple checked the registry settings and locked.properties files to be sure I'm not serving SSLv3 and presenting a valid cert, and all those settings look correct.Checking ports 443 or 8443 shows that the protocols/cert are working properly, but the same scan on 4172 shows it responding to SSLV3 and issuing a self-signed (default) PCoIP cert.

Here's what my locked.properties file looks like in C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\sslgateway\conf:

secureProtocols.1=TLSv1.2

secureProtocols.2=TLSv1.1

secureProtocols.3=TLSv1

preferredSecureProtocol=TLSv1.2

enabledCipherSuite.1=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.2=TLS_DHE_DSS_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.3=TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.4=TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.5=TLS_DHE_DSS_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.6=SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_MD5

enabledCipherSuite.7=SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.8=SSL_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA

enabledCipherSuite.9=SSL_DHE_DSS_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA

And here are the registry settings that the PCoIP gateway should be using for the cert (The SSLCertPSGNI key is properly set to the public fqdn of the Security Server):

The friendly name on the cert in the Windows cert store is vdm, and there is a private key associated with the cert. As I mentioned, it's only failing on 4172 - 443 and 8443 are working as expected. Any clue where to start looking for why the PCoIP gateway isn't respecting these settings on 4172?

Thanks,

Geoff

Floating Pool With Office 365?

$

Hello Everyone,

We are in the middle of rolling out Office365 on our VDI environment and it seems to be working perfectly for our dedicated pool by having it installed on the base image. Our concern would be on how do we do this on a floating pool environment? Tried few methods but it seems that O365 is removing 1 license on every user that login to a same vdi desktop. Is there a way possible that we can have this O365 on our floating pool and only removes a license from the first user who use that vdi? I know that this may sound more of a Microsoft Question rather than a VMware stuff but I'm just trying my luck her hoping that someone was able to have this scenario working.

Our last option would be to switch these floating pool to a dedicated one.

Thanks in advance for any response!

Best,

Ian

I am new to VMWare communities and Vmware as well, I am currently evaluating Vmware. I have setup ESX 5.1 with VSphere Vcenter and View administrator. I am having issues with the USB redirection on the client machine when using Vmware view Client, I get "USB redirection is not available" in View Client under "Connect USB device" menu option. Everything works fine in VSphere client, I am able to redirect my USB devices to virtual desktop. I have enabled USB access in View administrator group policies for the Pool. I have made sure that I have installed USB recirection when installing agent and as well as view client. I am running out of options and any help is greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance...

How to enable HTML Access in desktop pool using PowerShell script?

Hello there,

I use to create desktop pools of automatic linked clones by means of a PowerShell/PowerCLI script . The script provides all the necessary parameters to the Add-AutomaticLinkedClonePool cmdlet and there are a lot of it! Creating pools this way saves me around 100 clicks per pool.

Now I would like to enable HTML Access for every pool but I can't seem to find the name of the parameter.

I checked the properties of the object returned by Get-Pool -pool_id w7mw620 and compared that to the properties of a similar other desktop pool where HTML access was disabled. I coulnd not see any differences in property values, that seem to make a significant difference to the "enable HTML access" setting.

There was one property named "calculatedValues" which was True for one and False for the other desktop pool. I do not know what is the meaning of this property . Neither the help for cmdlet Add-AutomaticLinkedClonePool nor Update-AutomaticLinkedClone list this property.

So .. in what ways can I set the property to enable HTML Access from a PowerCLI script?

RDSH applications, where are files saved?

i have looked through a lot of forum posts and blogs looking for this answer. Right now we use View to host full desktops and it works great. We are thinking about trying hosted applications. For example, if we run Microsoft Word as a hosted application, a user launches Word and creates a document, when they go to save the document:

  • Where can it be saved?
  • Do they get a choice of locations?
  • Can one of those locations be a home directory on a Windows file server?

Segenting on Single Network

Hello,

I have VMware ESXi  in the DMZ in test lab.

The DMZ sits between an external and internal firewall see attached image.

What needs to be configured so that Host 1 and Host 2 can access the internet and LAN but cannot communicate or ping each other using saprate networks but keeping the existing ip addressing 192.168.255.0/24 for uplinks to firewalls ?

Guest Host 1 vlan 10 and Guest Host 2 vlan 20 have the same default gateway with is the external firewall.   This acts as router.   The switches are layer 2.

When I use vlans on on hosts they cant ping the LAN.

I was told Pvlans and Vshield enterprise is the way to go to restrict host on single /24 network.

Is vshield good enough or do I need checkpoint.

Any help appreciated.

Hosted applications via HTML5, on the road map?

Now that View 6 has hosted applications, they can only be accessed through the View client

Does anyone know if HTML5 access to hosted applications is on the roadmap?

Citrix Xenapp already has this feature

PCOIP reconnect issues - VM thinks another connection attempt is taking place so kills my reconnect attempt???

I've recently had issues where if I disconnect from a VM (I have 3 dedicated VM's in different pools that show this behavior) and then try to reconnect, I get the "black screen" and then a disconnect message saying the connection attempt ended. looking in the VM logs, I see the following (note, all x.x.x.x are valid IP's that I edited from this post). googling the "tera disconnect cause host broker reconnect" error indicates its either some pre-startup/shutdown message that I don't understand, or that view thinks another connection attempt is simultaneously being made. has anyone seen this before? and how do you troubleshoot it? there isn't enough for me to respond to here. i'm assigned to this VM and unless someone has my random RSA FOB token, and also somehow tried to interrupt my connection 20-30 times across the past several days, I dont believe a second connection attempt is trying to be made every time this happens. I have found if I reboot the VM, I can then connect fine, but if I then disconnect and try to reconnect this issue comes back.

hi there,

i have a strange problem with the screen resolution of a virtual machine.

VM Guest: Windows 7 Professional DE

the video ram is set to 128mb.

A restart or logg off resets the resolutions settings which I've configured to 640 x 480.

i tried following:

1. deinstall vmware view agent

2. deinstall vmware tools

3. install vmware tools (complete)

4. install vmware view agent

unfortunately without success..

Any ideas on this?

How to best setup View Connection Server and Composer to limit single point of failure?

$

Hello all,

Just had a few quick questions:

1.)  How is everyone limiting the View Connectoin Server to a single point of failure.  All the reading I've done it looks like everyone sets up two connectoin servers and either does DNS round robbin on it, or puts both connection servers behind a load balancer

2.)  What happens if the View Connection server goes offline while users are logged in and actively using desktops?

3.)  How do you protect View Composer from single point of failure.  It looks like most people are installing this on there vCenter server and just leaving it to VMware HA.

4.)  What happens if View Composer goes down and you have active desktop sessions being used by users that are linked clones

5.)  What does the View Connection Server Replication Partner used for?  Is this a new feature of View 6 that creats some form of Cluster for the connection server?

Let me know,

Thanks

IE CPU Utilisation shoots to 100% on disconnected session

$

Hi all,

(I am in the process of logging an SR for this, but MyVMware isn't completing that so just posting here to cover the bases)

Infrastructure: View 6.0 on vSphere 5.5.0; Windows 8.1 virtual desktops with View Agent 6.

Quick summary:

If a user disconnects their PCoIP session leaving IE open with an HTML5 based page in the foreground, CPU reaches and maintains 100% utilization. When the user re-connects, utilization drops back to normal levels.

Microsoft support performed traces on the IE DCOMP process and the findings are below.

Leaving IE minimized when a user disconnects is fine. Firefox/Chrome also do not exhibit this, only IE.

Microsoft support response:

"The trace shows IE is waiting for the batch ID confirmation.

   +0x050 m_currentBatchId : 0x24bb57dc

   +0x054 m_lastConfirmedBatchId : 0x20e335b0

   +0x058 m_lastSurfaceProcessedBatchId : 0x20e335b0

The current batch ID keeps increasing, but the last confirmed batch id is never updated until the user Gary’s session resumed. The confirmed ID jumped from 0x20e335b0 to 0x24bb57da all of a sudden. After that, the IE UI thread jumped out the loop and resume to normal.

As a conclusion, we have some important findings:

• The CPU spike is observed after user disconnected the session, the monitoring tool will give out the warning.

• When logon using a different user, the CPU spike persists.

• When the disconnected session resumes, IE CPU drops to normal.

• However, when you disconnect the session with IE window displays, the CPU soon increased to 100%.

• We also did a test by minimize the IE window before disconnecting the session, and then the CPU stays normal and the issue doesn’t recur.

The dump we collected today shows the exact same issue as the previous dumps. DCOMP client is waiting for the confirmed ID to be updated. It seems when the VDI session is disconnected, DWM stops processing the content frame until the user session is active again."

Is there anything that can be done at the Horizon Agent side (via policy perhaps) that could mitigate this?

Thanks,

NickB
