Persona Management - Inner workings

View 5.2 Persona Management - Occasionally fails to populate local copy of appdata/roaming with data from repository - Using redirected appdata/roaming to UNC path instead

Occasionally Persona Management fails to populate the local copy of appdata/roaming with data from the persona repository. This happens sporadically, probably 1 out of 50 users per login. When this does happen, the appdata/local portion (we are using persona on both local and roaming) of the persona is always downloaded successfully. We have a ticket open (14459879303) but the next step in VMwares support advice was to disable DFS. We are only using DFS for its namespace and to replicate a copy of the repository over to another server for backup purposes. The second server is never an active target so we dont believe that DFS is the issue and would like to query the community for other ideas and advice.

I have read that if persona encounters long file names or encrypted files that it will halt. VMware did not state that they found this to be our problem from review of our logs but I wonder if they can even tell, the WMWVvp.txt is hard to read. This leaves us wondering how we can further troubleshoot the issue ourselves. The last thing we want to do is stop using DFS.

In the meantime, we have decided to test redirecting appdata/roaming to a folder beside the %username%.%userdomain%.V2 . This is working so far but we wonder what problems could arise with this solution down the road?

"Ghost" CTRL+ALT+DEL when reconnecting to a Windows 7 VDI Clone

Hello all,

Just for some background:

We are putting in place a Clone base pool for our small user base. Everything works pretty good except a few quircks that aren't really critical but annoying.

Infrastructure:

VmWare Horizon 5.3.0 build 1427931

Hoirzon Client 5.3.0 build-1042023

All VDI's are Windows 7 Enterprise

The problem:

Each time I log on to a VDI (or one of our users) and disconnect from it (meaning the session remains open) and then reconnect to it, I don't get to the desktop. Instead there's a black screen for about 5-6 seconds followed by a quick view of the desktop and one or two seconds later, a "Ghost" CTRL+ALT+DEL gets pressed and we are sent to the lock screen where we need to press cancel to get back to the desktop. I've searched around quite a bit but haven't found a fix for this.

I created a group policy following this KB:http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026797

It is applied but no change.

It might be interesting to note that we are still also using regular VDIs that are individually assigned to each user where we do not encounter this issue. We have 2 different OUs for the regular and the cloned VDIs but the GPOs applied are the same (except for the one I created above).

Are there other reasons for this happening?

Thanks,

display physically connected to card to enable vDGA?

Relevant versions:

ESXi 5.5

Windows 8 VM

Quadro 2000

nvidia 320.86 drivers

View Agent 5.3

VDCA plugin

View Client 2.3

I followed documentation to enable vDGA in view (enable passthrough, install driver, install agent, run monterey enable), but was not able to connect with view client and make use of the graphics card.  After finally trying a tip in another post, I plugged a display into the card and whent into the device manager in the vm and disabled the svga adapter.  Finally, it works.

My question is why is this required, or what am I missing?  I did not set any pool settings as I'm using VDCA.  Is there a registry setting needed? I used --desktopprotocol pcoip and --desktoplayout fullscreen when running the client.

"Already Used" after every log off since upgrade to 5.1.3

Last week we performed the update from 5.1.0 to 5.1.3 to resolve a minor issue but now we are having a larger one. Every linked clone machine goes into an Already Used state after the user logs off of it. Or even with our pools that have provisioned machines sitting, when someone logs on one, and the provisioned machine then attempts to become available it goes to Already Used. I used to find machines in this state every once in a while and I would just remove them but now it is nearly every machine every time it attempts to refresh.

Through the update I patched the View Connection Server, Security Server, and the View Agent all to 5.1.3. View Composer is at 3.0 and vSphere at 5.0.

I have found the KBs about changing the pae-DirtyVmPolicy from 0 to 1 or 2. If I do that, yes it will make the desktops available and not held up until I can manually remove them but I would like to fix the real reason this is happening since it is almost every single desktop every single time someone logs off. If I change the policy it'll be deleting machines constantly rather than refreshing properly like they should be,

We cannot upgrade higher than 5.1.3 because our storage won't support it at this time. Anyone have any ideas?

Log in as Current User - Horizon View Client 2.2 - GSSAPI Failure

Hello Everyone!

We've recently upgraded to View 5.3 here and unfortunately the client seems to throw the following error when using "Log in as current user.."

Capture.PNG

This problem only occurs with the 2.2 client, previous clients have no problem connecting to the connection server.

If you remove the log in as current user option and proceed to enter username/password, everything works as expected.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

GRID K2 vSGA and vDGA Stats

Hi guys,

I have both vSGA and vDGA configured on my GRID K2 card.

I have a dedicated desktop with 1 GPU attached, and with dxdiag shows up Nvidia GRID K2.

I have several shared desktops using vSGA.

Both work as expected.

However when I go into the command line and issue the nvidia-smi command it only shows 1 of the GPUs. Now I know this GPU relates to the vSGA desktops because if I run an app within one of those desktops the GPU-Util increases. So why can't I see the usage of the vDGA GPU/does not even show up? Is this normal behaviour? If so, how can I see the performance of the dedicated GPU?

Many thanks

Hi

According to latest release notes of 5.3 , if you use vDGA linked-clones desktops and you do a refresh / recompose the VM's should keep there vDGA settings

but this doesn't apply to the recompose operation , refresh however does work and keeps the vDGA GPU settings ??

Does someone know, or know how to restrict the access to some desktops pools by the ip address of the client? We need to achive this because our users will need to reach some differents desktops pool dependly of their location within the campus (we are a College). But we dosen't want a user to reach the pool of a certain lab, when he is not in the lab...Here each lab have his own subnet..

Horizon View - List of supported Guests

Hello,

After 45 minutes of trawling VMware's website and various documentation I'm unable to find a list of guest OS's supported by Horizon View.

Can someone point me in the right direction, or let me know if Linux guests (specifically RehHat / Centos 6) are supported by Horizon View? (This is as the running OS sent to the remote desktop, not the OS running the client app.)

Thanks

Nick

Authentication of View via certificate

Hi,

One of my customer is looking for a way to authenticate his View Client connection to Security Server with something like certificate. They don't want to invest into 2-factor like RSA token or smartcard.

Any idea ?

certificate process for Horizon 5.3

Hi all,

I am trying to get rid of the certificate implementation on view 5.3 and I really get very confused with all the different informations I receive.

I have 3 servers. 1 connection, 1 security and 1 composer.

I have created an dns HOST (A) for view-int.my.domain that is redirecting to the security server.

I have been able to make it all work internally. now I try to give external access and I really get lost.

I have created an internal certificate for test purpose for the URL view-int.my.domain and friendly name vdm. I then imported this certificate on my security and connection servers and restarted the services.

Am I right doing this ? When I open my administration console I see the CS and SS red with message "Server's certificate does not match the URL."

Then I am lost. Do I need and alias? do I need my certificate on my two servers ?

Thanks for your help.

Otip

PS : imagine I finally make it work. How will connect my internal users, through the CS ?

Stuck @ Waiting for Agent

I've deployed a few new VDI's that have been sitting at Waiting for Agent.  Reboot did not resolve.  I followed the KB articles can confirmed I can telnet in both directions and DNS resolves correctly.  I've reinstalled tools and agent as well.  I'm pretty stumped as to where to go next.  Anywhere else to look?

Thanks

Change default connection server?

I have a View 5.3 installation and recently changed some of my desktop VMs to a separate VLAN.  I created a new connection server that sits on that VLAN, but the View Agent will not connect and the administration console shows the status as "waiting for agent".  I have tried to reinstall the agent multiple times, completely stripped out VMware Tools and the agent and reinstalled everything, but am still getting this error.  I can console to the vm and ping and resolve every connection server, the vCenter server, browse the web, etc. so I know that the network is configured correctly.  I would like to change the default connection server setting on the agent, but don't see a registry entry or any other means of making this change.  Google hasn't yielded any results, or at least nothing that has solved the problem.  Anyone have an idea what could be wrong and how to fix it?

***Added the support file generated from the VM.
