Hi. I'm working with a University in implementing VMware View. One of the business requirements is that every student should have access to all lab machines. The other part of the requirement is that due to license restrictions, administration wants to restrict certain applications to a fixed number of users. For example. Application X is licensed for 30 seats. The instructor would like only the 30 students in that physical lab location at a certain time to be able to launch a desktop and use that application. Students who are in other physical lab locations should not be able to deplete the 30 licensees of that application. Restricting by AD security group won't work, as any number of students could have authorization to the lab. Using tags is not going to work.

View has Location Based Awareness capability. LBA is able to pass end-point data such as IP, MAC, etc to the virtual desktop. Could LBA data be passed to the broker, so the broker can make additional decisions on pool entitlement, other than just AD user/group. For example, it would be great if View could say if the MAC address of the end-point device falls within this range, and the user is a member of this AD group, they are entitled to the pool.

If anyone has any suggestions on restricting app usage based on license usage, could you please share?

We have a school environment where we are running VMware VIEW 4, single connection broker and a vCenter server.  Our environment consists of about 100 virtual desktops in multiple pools.  Each pool contains non-persistent linked clones.  Each lab in our school has it's own desktop pool. 

What we're trying to accomplish is to restrict the displayed options for students to select when they login to the VIEW environment.  As the students move to different labs, the images and applications are different, so we'd only like the student to see one option to select but it needs to be specific to that lab. 

I'm open to suggestions of alternate configurations, but ultimately we need to present each lab and desktop pool to all students and not allow them to choose the wrong desktop.

Hi. I was wondering if there are any PowerCLI or other scripting experts out there that can help. What I'd like to do is be able to use the location based variables that an end-point passes to a virtual desktop. What I'm looking to do use a script to hide an application desktop icon/and start menu icon based on the endpoint MAC address. For example, if an endpoint client MAC address is not part of a pool of "allowed" MAC addresses, the script will hide certain application desktop icons/and start menu icons. There will be far too many possible endpoints for me to define each endpoint name, so the rule would have to be "if MAC is not part of this MAC pool"

The following is the scenario for view datastore and queries related to it. Could you help us out answering these queries and overcoming it.

Scenario:

We are using Horizon View 5.3.

We have around 30 pools.

We are using Storage DRS cluster (size at present 2 TB) with datastores of 1 TB each (1TB is standard size followed).

We are giving/pointing this one datastore cluster(2 TB) to all 30 pools to store replica, persistent and OS delta disk.

On these scenario the questions are:

1) Will we have to go with storage DRS disabled on datastore cluster as view does not allow view  VDIs to be storage vmotioned ?

2) If in case this datastore cluster gets full, and additional datastore is added to datastore cluster or if existing datastore cluster is expanded, it will rebalance and refresh too(as rebalance includes refresh operation), will it affect all the VDIs of all the pools?

3) If yes, what will be the solution to overcome this.

4) If yes, to our observation user assignment of VDI from view admin portal remains same however user's local admin rights gets removed from VDI (OS end) and additional softwares installed by user in C drive gets removed. Please also let us know if there will be any other consequences which we are missing.

I'm trying to find a good model which we can recommend to our VDI users to do Skype Video Calls. What I'm looking for is a standard webcam which can be run in a non-HD mode. In fact, it doesn't have to support HD at all.

Logitech seems to have HD web cams only.

Any feedback or input about your experience is much appreciated.

Just wondering if this is something just in house or something bigger.  When on wired or wireless on Windows 8 and 8.1 (notebooks/tablets), using Horizon view client 2.3.3, I'm getting hesitation in scrolling mostly in Outlook 2010 and bigger excel spreadsheets, that I don't see on my Windows 7 machines using the same client.  Anyone else have notice this and/or resolve?

We've recently had an issue where a couple of our View users are getting disconnected.  This one in paticular is connecting through the View Client 5 to a Windows 7 machine.  Her client just closes on her - afterwards she is able to log back in and everything seems to be working fine.  I've noticed some disconnects in her PCoIP and Agent logs which I'll paste below but I'm having trouble figuring out where the issue is.  Has anyone seen this before or know which direction I should be looking in?  I appericiate any help.

Has any one run into a situation where all services are running.  There are no apparent errors but  no composer operation occur if requested?

Horizon View 5.3.0  Multiple connection servers.  One VCenter with composer.  Vcenter 5.1

I apologize in advance for my bad english.

I need to deploy 2 view cs servers, 1 view security server and 1 view composer on the vcenter (self-signed certificates of this vcenter already have been replaced by CA-signed certificates) and also i want to use DNS balancing for 2 view cs.

I want to use Active Directory Enrollment Policy to generate SSL-certs for View components, but got some questions.

1.There are 2 nics on each view cs server (1st nic is for management and 2nd is for users connections), so 1 dns points at 2 ip-addresses. Should i create different dns for each ip-addresses, or should i avoid the situation with 2 nics on each view cs server and set only 1 nic for each server?

2.Should i set 2 nics for View Security Server? I`ve red that view security needs 2 names (but i dont know is there need of 2 nics) - internal and public, but i used scheme only with 1 name earlier on VMware View 5.0 and it works fine.

Update: there are no external connections to View CS, some clients are located in different subnet than View CS, behind the gateway, but they could resolve local name of view CS (viewcs1.domain.local), i guess no need for public name like viewcs.company.com.

3.What names should i specify in Alternative Name during the certificate request? For example for first view connection server (view cs short name, view cs FQDN, view security short name, view seurity FQDN, dns name for balancing and some public dns record)? What names for view security? What names for View Composer? I am confused about names/nics correct scheme for view cs and view security server and it makes more difficult the process of certificate enrollment for me.

I can use Update-UserOwnership to associate them to users,  but how to add vm to inventory using View Powercli?

Hello again everyone,

I'm at the point where i'm ready to move our developers off of Citrix VDI in a Box to VMware View 5.3.  I have deployed View to my end users (approx 20 of them) and for the most part the images are running well.  We have added 2 x Teradici APEX 2800LP cards into our servers which have seemed to greatly help offloading.

My developers started beta testing view and immediately started complaining about it being sluggish, dragging windows from one screen to another is a bit slow.  In my mind it seems normal because perhaps i'm just used to View.  They showed me their Citrix desktops, in dual screen mode , dragging windows is very fast and smooth, yet when we flip back to their View image, even I can see it is a bit slow.

My regular staff are using Tera 2 Zero Clients and things seem to be working ok.  Our developers are using their own laptops and the software View client to connect.

When we built the base image, we ran thru all of the optimization recommendations.  I used the tool to disable just about everything is asked us to.  Pools have been deployed, we have increased the video card memory in the pool to 512MB per node, verified the Teradici drivers are installed and offloading, yet there is noticeable lag.

They are worried because it lags with nothing running, they feel its going to get brutal when they load Eclipse and other tools that they simply don't even want to try and wish to stay with Citrix.  For us this is not an option as we've dropped Citrix and are no longer paying for licensing or support.

Our servers are absolute beats so i don't think the problem is coming from them

4 x Super Micro with 2 x 6 Core Zeon's each

128GB Each

6 x Intel 520 Series 450GB SSD in a RAID 1 (per node)

2 x Gigi links teamed

Total memory consumption on the server is about 70GB ./ 131

Total CPU usage on the server is less than 25%

Each ESXi Host is running 5.5 Update 1

vCenter Server is 5.5.0 U1

Logs and performance counters are not showing anything at the host level being constrained.

Desktops are setup as follows:

Hardware Version 10

4 Cores Each

10GB RAM Each

100GB Thin Provisioned Disks Each

NO persistant disk

NO folder redirection

Windows 7 x64 (fully optimized per VMware)

I'm at a loss, i just don't know what else i can look at or tweak to make moving across multiple screens faster.  Can anyone offer any tips or recommendations ?  It would be greatly appreciated

I migrated our co-installed composer and vcenter server to a new machine while at the same time updating to the latest version.  My problem is the desktop pools are still being controlled by the old vcenter and vcomposer server and I cannot seem to transfer ownership of them to the new server.  Is there a way to do this?  I don't see a cmdlet for updating a pools vcenter and vcomposer in the view powercli.  Any info would be helpful.

I have inquiry, regarding Horizon View and wonder if anyone can clarify.

There are licenses for

vSphere 5 for Desktop 150QTY

View 5 Premier Add-on 150QTY

and there will be 2 ESXi server for 75QTY and these 2 server will have Windows 7 of 75 QTY each, and those will be powered on.

(license will be split into 2, 75QTY each)

On top of that, there will be

・2 View Connection Server
・1 View Composer Server
・8 Deep Security Virtual Appliance

Question:

Will above 11 server group be counted toward View license of 75QTY or not?

If so, 11 QTY licenses are short.

I guess it will be counted to 75 QTY, correct?

We followed this guide to configure everything on view desktops: Flash URL Redirection in VMware Horizon View | VMware End-User Computing Blog - VMware Blogs

And we also followed the specs on the VMware Horizon View Feature Pack Installation and Administration guide for View 5.3 Feature Pack 1. We downloaded and installed Feature Pack 2 on view desktops.

Our problem is that we open a browser with the example through a View connection over a 2.3.3 client in windows and it says "Output being redirected to a new window. Please Wait". Everything seems to be ok, but nothing happens. No window appears with the video... Are we doing something wrong?

We are testing many features of the horizon view 5.3 to decrease CPU usage, due to video play, but any of the products that vmware has appear to help. We are seriously thinking about moving to Citrix/Xen solution. We are realizing that view solution is really really really inmature (not to mention documentation...).

Please, any help would be appreciated.

We would like to upgrade our View system from 4.6 to 5.3.  I have read the various documents from VMware for Obtaining SSL certs and the View Horizon Upgrade Doc but I am still a little confused with how many certificates I need to get signed by a CA  (external CA)

We have the following:

2x Connection Servers

1x Security server

1x vCenter Server and Composer

We are thinking of purchasing a SAM cert as opposed to individual certs so would a SAM cert which allows five different FQDN server names be enough?

I believe I only need one certificate for the vCenter server and composer as they are on the same server

Would I need 2 names for the 2 connection servers (1 for each)

Would I need 2 for the single security server; one internal DNS name and one external DNS name???????

If the above is correct, I would need 5 different certs or a SAN cert which allows five different DNS entries in it?

Please could someone confirm.  I am especially confused about the Security Server; does the one server need 2 certs/names???

I have VMware Horizon View 5 with linked-clone desktops without persistent disks.

These are used for our factory floor data entry desktops.

Each group of desktops should have a set of applications and shortcuts on their desktops.

The individual groups will log into the desktop with a separate username.

So I will have 5 logins for user A and five logins for user B, all simultaneous.

Question:  Can I use View Persona Manager to manage the individual user's applications/shortcuts if they are all using the same linked-clone pool?

Hi, we are testing View 5.3  with feature pack installed. RTAV is really great, specially with webcam. But audio quality from microphone is limited to 8 khz and it seems to be an hard limit.

There is a VMware KB explaining how to increase video quality but not for audio. Is there a way to change audio settings for RTAV? And if not, why this very low limit? We understand 8 khz is just OK for Skype calls but it could be better.

PS: We are using Windows client 2.3 and guest is Windows 7 x64. Thanks!
