How to increase graphical performance of view desktops

$

We are starting deployment of Win7 enterprise virtual desktops in our organization using 23" LG all in 1 zero clients (pcoip).  They are running at 1920 x 1080 native resolution.  We have 20 VM's running right now on 3 esxi servers (192GB ram, dual 6 core xeon processors). The server hardware is barely being taxed at all. storage is on ibm v7000 FC san with SSD drives.  This is a very robust setup which can run many more than the 20 VMs we are running. VMs have 2gb ram and 2vcpu.

The problem we are having is graphical performance is pretty bad.  Windows are slow when resizing/dragging, video playback is choppy, scrolling in internet explorer stutters and we have one particular application that lags tremendously when switching menus.

We've noticed that if we set the zero clients to a lower (non-native) resolution of 1024x768, then the performance increases greatly and is comparable to a physical workstation.

Why is this?  Does vmware view (5.1) really not work well with these larger monitors and higher resolutions?  Would graphics offload cards help at all?  Im struggling to find where exactly the problem is and how it is best resolved.  I've looked at the teradici apex cards but from what I have read, it doesnt sound like they give better performance so much as take the burden off the server CPU which is definitely not a problem at this point.  Server CPUs are barely above 5%.

Finding view connection server to which view client is connected

How can I know the connection server to which a view client is connected?

I detect that wswc process is running on a machine and now I need to know to which connection server it is connected to.

How can this be done?

Do let me know if any further information or clarification is needed from my side.

Vmware Horizon 5.2 implementation

Hi I am starting to look into deploying Horizon view 5.2 in my company.

A few questions as this is my first time deploying this, I need to determine a few things but need some advice/guidance from someone who has done this before.

  1. my current environment users approx 50 users use AutoCAD and another application called Gemcom - I need to determine if these 2 applications can handle working in a virtualized environment
  2. what are typical things I need to address to ensure the enrivonment can handle Horizon View 5.2
  •      network infrastructure, SAN (iscsi, FC.) network switches 10/100 or gigabit, Vlans?
  • existing hardware (servers, PCs) have the min requirement for horizon environment
  • ensure desktops are able to handle Web browser or thinclients can handle the graphic intensive applications (AutoCAD....)
  • necessary bandwidth requirements, what type is being used at moment
  • firewall

or if someone has a document of some sorts to go by step by step guide to what things I need to address before making a decesion

Horizon View 5.2 infrastructure with View Client 5.1 or 5.0

$

Will previous versions of View Client (5.1, or 5.0) work after an upgrade to Horizon View 5.2? The Compatibility Matrix for Horizon View 5.2 and 5.0.x Components indicates an older client will work with the 5.2 connection/security servers, but "Only during upgrade" for the agent. I understand we won't have any of the features/bug fixes of newer clients if we leave old clients at their outdated version, I just want to make sure the users with old clients will still be able to use View until we can get them updated.

Desktops becoming invalid under load?

$

Don't know if anyone has seen anything like this before but...

The issues we're having seem to be occurring during periods of peak usage (over 200+ virtual desktops in use).  Seemingly random desktops as they are refreshed and powered on become invalid and eventually come back with a virtual machine question posed (see attached screen shots from vSphere).  If I answer the question (with either "moved" or "copied") the desktops soon show up in View Administrator as a Problem Desktop with Agent Unreachable.  Usually this happens on a dozen or so desktops during the day....the only way I've found to fix them is to delete them and let them reprovision.

What could be causing this?  Could it be storage related file locking issues or VAAI related errors?  We've done all the obvious that were recommended by VMware and our storage vendor, VMware initially recommended Fibre Channel host firmware updates and we did those, and the storage vendor updated the firmware on the hybrid (spinning disk with SSD caching) SAN and reconfigured it with Fixed Fibre Channel pathing instead of Most Recently Used.  That seemed to help performance some (occasional slow desktop logging in seemed to get much quicker), but the erroring out of desktops continues under high usage and our system should be capable of handling a lot more than 250 desktops.  We have 6 hosts with a combined 208 cores and 1.44TB of RAM.

When there are less than 150 users of the system, everything behaves completely normal.

We are using CBRC on the pool.

Thanks for any insight anyone might have.

View 4.6 to 5.2 ... Upgrade or Start Fresh?

$

Company had single vSphere 4.1 vCenter server with two clusters (ESXi 4.1 hosts), one supporting virtualized servers (Server Cluster 1) and one supporting View 4.6 (View Cluster 1)

Wanted to move to vSphere 5.1, but wasn't ready to move to View 5 at the time.

Installed new vSphere 5.1 vCenter server, created cluster (ESXi 5.1) and manually migrated virtualized servers (Server Cluster 1).

We now are ready to move to View 5.2 ... couple questions:

Should we consolidate back to a single vCenter? The downside that I see if not being able to move the clusters independently ... such as moving the server environment to vSphere 5.5 ..eventually. What is the real benefit of maintaining a single vCenter  - we are a small shop 8 hosts, 75 virtualized servers, 350 desktops.

If we maintain two separate vCenter instances, should we upgrade from 4.6 to 5.2 or install fresh? I have been a fan of fresh installs because it gives you an opportunity to have a clean start.

What has been the experience with upgrading? Easy, moderate, difficult? Are there good guides to assist with an upgrade?

What has been the experience with a new install? Any issues with the migration (or lack there of)? I'll assume that all pools will have to be recreated.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Persona v's Persistant Disk

Hi All

We have been deploying a number of pools recently but would like to create
them as stateless floating pools. However due to some small, but fundamental, in-house
developed programs we have to create the pools with Persistent disks. I don’t
understand the difference between the profile redirection that happens with persistent
disks in comparison with the redirection that happens with persona. We can easily
replicate the problem but each time we refresh our pool using when it is
configured to use persona management the said application has to be set up
again from scratch. All other user persona info is fine.

Anyone know of a persona expert or knowledge base article that may help me
here?

Regards

Help with Firewall setting for Cisco ASA 5510 and Remote Access

$

We have a third party who maintains our Cisco ASA firewall.   I have been working with them for days trying to get the remote access to work for Horizon View 5.2.  Using the View Client, we can connect, authenticate, chose the desktop, but then we get the black screen. Using HMTL accces, we can connect, authenticate, choose the desktop, but then we get this error An error has occurred: {"code":"ETIMEDOUT","errno":"ETIMEDOUT","syscall":"connect"}.

I have followed all the docs, etc that are published on these and everything points to the Firewall configuration.    Unfortunately,  I do not know how to maintain the firewall and so I am at the mercy of the 3rd party vendor. They tell me it is all correct.

I am hoping there is someone out there who knwos a CISCO ASA 5510 that can review these settings and let me know what they are missing or doing wrong.

We have two connection servers.  One is paired with a Security server that sits on the DMZ.  The other is used internally for direct PCOIP access.

In looking at this doc from VMWARE it does not appear that our config covers everything and there are entries from the security server to the connection server that may bit be needed.  But not really knowing firewalls, maybe it is correct. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1027217

Hardware Key in Horrizon view VM

Hi,

Grasping at straws here, but, we have an application that uses the Aladin HASP hardware key that our application uses for copy protection.

We see the key in the view desktop after connecting the USB device, but so far, the software does not seem to be able to read the key to allow the software to operate.

Just wondered if anyone else had ANY experience with H/W USB keys?  I am still fairly new to View so not sure if there are any USB tweeks or anything I should be looking at ... I'm currently doing View training courses, so hope to be up to speed soon!

Thanks

Bill

Is USB Redirection broken by VMware Tools 9.0.5.23141?

$

I recently upgraded my ESXi hosts from version 5.1.0 v1117900 to v1157734. I'm now attempting to upgrade VMware Tools on all of my VMware View parent virtual machines from v9.0.5.21789 to v9.0.5.23141. Doing so, however, appears to break USB Redirection for all recomposed linked-clone desktops.

USB keyboards and mice continue to work. But USB storage and scanners are not being recognized by the guest OS. I've reproduced this problem on two separate parent virtual machines and desktop pools.

My System:

  • VMware Horizon View Administrator is 5.2.0 build-987719
  • VMware vCenter is 5.1.0 build-1123961
  • Desktop OS is Windows 7 32-bit

My Procedure:

I've attempted two procedures:

Procedure 1:

  • Uninstall VMware View Agent, reboot
  • Upgrade VMware Tools, reboot
  • Reinstall VMware View Agent, shutdown, snapshot
  • Recompose desktop pool
  • USB stops working (but is installed)

Procedure 2:

  • Uninstall VMware View Agent, reboot
  • Uninstall VMware Tools, reboot
  • Install VMware Tools (all features), reboot
  • Install VMware View Agent (all features), shutdown, snapshot
  • Recompose desktop pool
  • USB stops working (but is installed)

My Question:

Is anyone else experiencing this problem with these versions of Tools and Agent? Are you able to have USB redirection from a linked-clone VM running Tools 9.0.5.23141, Agent 5.2.0.987719, and ESXi 1157734?

Scheduled recompose failing

I am trying to do an automatic recompose on one of our pools. When it is time for the recompose to kick off, I get an error that says "provisioning error occurred for machine 'machine name' refit operation resync failed" on all the desktops in the event log and then you can click the "..." for more information and it says "Sleep Interrupted."  We are currently running ESXi 5.0 and View 5.0

Sorry that is not much info but hopefully someone can shed some light on the issue.

Question - View Rebalance Task

$

Hi All,

I have a linked clone pool of 1000 desktops on 10 NFS datastores, I had to add a new datastore and I found that View Manager will first rebalance desktops on the new datastore but it doesnt stop there. View Manager continues to rebalance all the 1000 desktops in the pool which results in migrating desktops across all 11 datastores.

Is ths expected behaviour? Is there any setting by which I can limit View Manager to only migrate VMs on the new datastore that is added?

Thanks.

QuickPrep Post-synchronisation VBS script failed

We have VBS script for post-synchronisation script but the Agent couldn't execute it. Here the log:

INFO  Ready  -  Running the PostSync script: "C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe C:\script\psview.vbs" with timeout: 120000

FATAL Guest  -  RunScript: Unable to execute script: 00DB2088 , error = 2

FATAL Ready  -  Failed to run PostSyncScript: "C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe C:\script\psview.vbs"Unable to create process for the scriptError 2 (0x2): Le fichier spécifié est introuvable.

The error "Fichier spécifié est introuvable" means "File not found"

The script is present on the parent image and the path is correct. There is no issue to execute the script when logged on the machine with the exact same line :"C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe C:\script\psview.vbs"

We follow the VMware KB 1026999 and there is no indication that VBS is not supported. The workaroud is to call a .BAT script as post-sync script. This .BAT calls the VBS script and is working. Here what this KB states:

If you use a scripting language that needs an interpreter to execute the script, the script path must start with the interpreter binary. For example, C:\windows\system32\cscript.exe c:\script\myvb.vbs.

Anyone have clues about this? Thanks

Dealing with login storms

Every morning, about 600-700 users log in at once. The VMs are already booted up. This is bringing my SAN to its knees until everyone is log in, then everything will run smoothly throughout the day.

I'm curious, is there any good way to deal with these login storms? We are running the environment on one SAN with about 1500 VMs on it. They are running windows 7.

Is there some sort of timeout of something I can use to prevent this? It looks like Connection Servers missed a disconnect message somewhere and think a session is still going. In fact, the audit logs show this. Any ideas would be helpful.  I am running 5.1 and the physical machines are not set to sleep.  I have also tried excluding the agent folder from AV with no success. I have found no way to replicate this and it happens randomly.

No free ports on distributed port group, recompose stops, why?

$

ESXi 5.1 fully patched, vCenter fully patched, View 5.2 up to date, linked clone pool of 220 desktops

Part way through recompose an error is thrown, "No free port is available in Distributed Port Group dvDesktop"

dvDesktop has 2048 ports with 1775 free

Each of my 5 ESXi hosts that are used for View have 512 ports for the dvSwitch

We are using static binding for these ports which from what I read is the preferred method as opposed to ephemeral ports

I opened a ticket a few weeks back with VMWare support but so far they have not been able to figure out why this is happening

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, im trying to connect a usb scanner(Fujitsu fi-6230).I have installed ISIS and Twain driver to host(HP Compaq 8300-Windows 7 x86) and to the vdi(Windows7 x86). The client is version 5.1 and tried either with RDP(as far as i know do not support usb scanner) or with PCoIP. The scanner is  being recognized by host , but in virtual is unrecognizable not even as unknown device. There is no restriction for usb redirection in View manager. I  uninstalled/installed Vmware  USB Host controller ,but did not work.Do i have to enable the default GPO  from DC about RDP redirection? Can you please assist, i cannot find out what is going on.

Thank you in advance

using USB phone-dialing software with View 5.2 and Win7 Linked Clone non persistent desktops

$

Hi all,

Our alumni office uses Phonathon software from Ruffalocody on physical computers and we are testing moving it over to linked clone non-persistent desktops running Windows 7. They use these old USB-to-analog phone dialers called Ziphones (or "iZiphones" I believe) and in our tests we got the phonathon software to dial out. When it went into production they said the Ziphone would dial but there was no ring. They also said that if they reconnected the USB ports it would start working again for a few calls then crap out again.

Anyone out there have experience using this software (or software like it) in a View environment?

Thanks!
