Horizon and NAT

$

Hi,

Trying to understand what mix of VMware technology I need to use to allow lab users to access their environments with Horizon View.  Within our lab, we have 6 different groups of RHEL 7 VMs that must replicate a real world environment as closely as possible.  Therefore each "group" of VMs is contained in its own Port Group and the port group does not have accessibility to any other networks... essentially the VMs are isolated and each port group uses the same range of RFC 1918 addresses (this is required.)  To gain access to the VMs via SSH, each port group has a dedicated NAT device with two NICs, one on the internal range and one on the external side.  We use 1:1 NAT mappings for each VM in the Port Group.

SSH and other communication works fine in this scenario.  However, the task I have is to provide Horizon View access to the RHEL VM's in each "group."  The catch is that I need a single point of access, so a single Horizon Connection server for all groups of VMs... not 1 connection server for each group of VMs.  So essentiall I have NAT between the Connection server and the RHEL Agent.  The agent checks-in and communicates with the Connection server fine.

The problem is when we launch a desktop pool.  the connection fails because the Agent is asking the client to use the RFC 1918 address instead of the external address (or at least, the FQDN of the VM.)  I know in older Citrix days, there were settings to allow for "AltAddr" where the agents is instructed to send the client a different IP than its actual IP.  I also see this is possible with VMware Horizon Direct-Connection Plugin, where an alternate IP can be specified, however Direct-Connection plugin does not support Linux.

Aside from creating 6 different Connection servers and asking my users to rely on 6 different URLs for each "group", any options to keep a single Connection server (or UAG for that matter.)

Thanks!

JTK

Horizon 7.4 with vCenter/vSphere 6.7

The release notes, KB and interoperability matrix for vCenter/vSphere 6.7 around Horizon 7.4 compatibility are confusing.

The blog article states:

At vSphere 6.7 general availability, compatible versions of VMware NSX, VMware Integrated OpenStack and VMware vSphere Integrated Containers will not be available. Moreover, VMware Horizon 7.4 is not compatible with the Instant Clone API used in vSphere 6.7.  Instant Clone support for vSphere 6.7 will be available in an upcoming Horizon release.

This sounds like it is compatible, as long as you are not using instant clones.

The interoperability matrix shows vSphere (esxi) 6.7 as compatible with Horizon 7.4, with the note that instant clones are not yet supported.

However, the interoperability matrix only lists 6.5u1 as the latest vCenter compatible with Horizon 7.4.

Considering that your vSphere version has to match or be lower than your vCenter version. I'm confused.  Is the info in the interoperability matrix wrong, does Horizon 7.4 support vCenter 6.7?

View 7.2 with Nvidia GRID, laggy YouTube?

Hey guys,

Here's what I've got. I'm currently running Horizon View 7.2 on ESXi hosts that are running 6.0. The hosts have Nvidia GRID K1 cards. I looked through quite a few guides on how to set this up for best video performance. In the past we were just using SVGA but have started to try to use vGPU. So I added the PCI Shared Nvidia card into the master image by editing the settings, chose a profile, reserved all memory, installed the Direct Connection agent into the master image and used the Horizon View client to connect to the master image and install the Nvidia driver related to the driver installed on the host. I then rebooted and shut down the master image and composed a new pool to test. When I log in, the screen isn't really drawing correctly across my three monitors. If I have it full screen, 2 screens don't load and the 1 screen that does flickers. If I minimize into a window it works fine, but the video quality isn't really that much better. Watching a full screen YouTube video at 720P is unbearable and laggy. Obviously something isn't working correctly. At one point the weird screen problem stopped and just started to work correctly but the video quality was never better. I'm just surprised that this is not working much better than the SVGA. I feel like something has to be not working properly. Any suggestions?

UAG 3.2 install via Powershell not using staticv4 address

Hello.  I am trying to use the PowerShell script to install UAG 3.2.  This will be a huge time saver over the OVF if I can get past the last remaining issue.  When I configure the ini file with a single IPV4 address, the appliance installs, but grabs a DHCP address instead.  I can see the OVF properties is missing the STATICV4 setting that is required when building the appliance using the GUI OVF installation.  Is there an ini file setting to set STATICV4 during the installation?

Thank you.

External Users getting blocked once inside a VDI instance

Any guidance would be helpful.

Has anyone experience issues with external users not being able to access applications with a VDI environment from their corp networks where using a personal connection worked?  It appears that some corp networks don't like the Data flow from a Security server into a VDI application?  For example, the port 22443 seems to be giving some corp networks trouble.

Environment

2 DMZ Windows based Security servers fronted by F5 Load balancers and paired with 2 internal Connection servers.

Users can access the VDI portal and log into it seeing the apps, but once an application is clicked, the connection seems to fail access the .local RDSH server on port 22443. Users not able to connect from their corp environments can access the apps fine from an personal internet connection.  Something about some corp networks not liking the route and port the traffic takes.

Thanks

VMs provisioned with Instant clone - OS Windows 10 LTSB - are NOT receiving the Computer Based Group Policy ... I reviewed and did exactly what the VMware Knowledge base suggested as a work around but no luck on my end.

Any suggestions? if any one is using Windows 10 with instant clones, if you can share some tips and advice please?

1. Can RDS hosts can also be configured as connection servers? Is this best process?

2. If there is internal and external connection users (connection and security servers), Does DMZ and On premises datacenter needs separate Network Load Balancing?

3. When would you consider using NLB in the first place?

4. can you use VMware converter to convert Desktop/s or servers to vCenter/ESXi in a Horizon environment?

5. Is Desktop/Application Farms data persistent?

6. Can we re-use N computing N300 for Horizon VDI?

Horizon 7.1 Instant clones in endless provisioning customizing deleting cycle

We are trying to stand up VDI on Horizon 7.1 with Windows 10 instant clones. When we create a pool, the five systems that we try to stand up are created, they get good IP addresses, they are joined to the domain and you can login to them by the console or by RDP. The pool itself is says that it is customizing and the systems are not accessible through the web client. The systems themselves never finish customizing. After about 10 minutes of trying, the systems are deleted and rebuilt.

I’ve used multiple Windows 10 images building them from scratch and trying a standard image we had here as well. We have both skipped the optimization tool and used it. We have rebuilt the entire Horizon suite multiple times. I have a ticket in with VMware now and they helped us pull the logs from the clones that are stood up. One of the other things they recommended that we do was to upgrade to Horizon 7.4 which we will be doing. I'm kind of at wits end. I don't know what else to do here.

Any and all recommendations or areas to check here would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I am on a closed network so I cannot provide any configuration/log files which makes the troubleshooting process a bit more challenging. Thank you in advance for taking a look at this.

VMware Horizon Client 'Login as current user' Not Working After Reimaging Workstation

Hello,

I'm running VMware Horizon Client ver 3.1.0 on Windows 7 Enterprise x64 on an AD domain. When I install the software on a new computer, the 'Login as current user' is working correctly and all is right in the world. However, if I reimage a workstation and add it to the domain using the same computer name (even when I delete the computer object out of AD first), the 'Login as current user' functionality does not work and instead I receive error message 'The Connection Server authentication failed to log in as current user'. If I deselect 'Login as current user', I am able to manually enter the credentials that I am logged on with at the prompt and it works correctly. Does anyone have any ideas why the functionality isn't working on reimaged machines?

Here is the Windows Security Event Viewer entry showing the failure when I try to connect using 'Login as current user'

An account failed to log on.

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.

  - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.

  - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.

  - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

And here is the VMware log during a failed login attempt (username and VDI server name removed for security)

RTAV in View Client 3.5 drops audio when resolution is set to 640x480

Hi all,

I have a very curious RTAV audio issue. We have a ticket open with VMware but I'm using all available knowledge resources.

Here goes:

My company uses a product called Vidyo for teleconferencing. We also mostly use HP Thin Client T620s running a linux ThinOS with View Client 3.5.0 (latest possible build from HP). We are also using View 6.2.

When we run Vidyo with a webcam or usb headset via RTAV everything works great (audio and video) until we bump up the resolution 640x480 in the RTAV group policy settings. Once this occurs, the audio craps out. View Agent debug logs show lots and lots of audio problems, but they don't look familiar to me. Could this be a bug? I should note this issue does NOT occur from a laptop or desktop (Mac or Windows) running the View Client.

So I'm left to wager that it's either the Thin Client OR the linux View Client build that is wonky.

I should also note that PCoIP logs show no loss or dropped packets and perfmon shows pretty stable PCoIP session stats inside the Windows OS on the View desktop VM. Any thoughts or ideas on this? Thanks in advance!

Change Replication partners for View connection servers

I would like to know if it is possible for us to change the replication partners for our replicated connection servers.

we have a total of 6 connection servers, 4 at site A and 2 at site B and currently, our main connection servers replication partners are the 2 at site B and causing some issues in the odd case we lose our Link between the 2 sites.

Below is a list of the servers and their current replication partners

SiteACon01SiteACon02SiteACon03SiteACon04SiteBCon01SiteBCon02
SiteBCon01SiteACon03SiteACon01SiteACon01SiteACon01SiteACon01
SiteBCon02SiteACon04SiteACon02SiteACon02SiteACon03SiteACon04

Ideally, I would like it to be something like the following

SiteACon01SiteACon02SiteACon03SiteACon04SiteBCon01SiteBCon02
SiteBCon01SiteBCon02SiteACon01SiteACon01SiteACon01SiteACon02
SiteACon03SiteACon04SiteACon02SiteACon02SiteACon03SiteBCon01

Is this possible and if so how??

how to enable client keyboard layout and IME

Now, I use windows client, windows 8.1, and server side is windows 8.1 too. I am from internalization team of global company, so I need to use different keyboard and IMEs. So how could I change my keyboard layout or IME in the virtual desktop session? For example, I initially connect to server using chinese IME with EN keyboard layout. in the VDI session, I want to key in DE words, so I should enable DE keyboard layout. How should I change the keyboard layout. Another case, I have 6 IMEs in local machine, could I use my local IME instead of server IME? Thanks.

Desktop Pool Creation in View server is taking 2 hours to complete customization

While trying to create a 2 VM Desktop pool in View connection server 7.4.0 in my test setup, VM is taking around 2 hours to be in Available State.

From the agent logs I see the following message :

View Composer customization in progress (total 60 seconds)

and Finally

View Composer customization in progress (total 6960 seconds)

View Composer customization state 0 (in 5 seconds)

Also from the sysprep logs I can see that sysprep is completed.

Any idea what could be the issue ?

Here I am attaching the complete logs for your reference.

Can smartcard authenticate with Horizon over HTML?

Is there any way to authenticate with a smartcard over HTML when not connected to to the network?

Goal: Authenticate from offsite to the Horizon desktop over HTML with either a password or the smartcard and not using VPN. Then once on the desktop we need to use only a smartcard to authenticate with OWA using a browser inside the desktop.

I've gotten conflicting info from searching and speaking with others, hence the question instead of further searching.

Thanks

VDI Upgrade

Hi All,
We are planning to upgrade below environment please suggest us the best possible path with minimum downtime

Current environment: 50 zero client users
VMware VDI version 5.2
vSphere 5.5
2x connection servers
1x security server
1x composer server
All running on server 2008R2

Target Environment:
VMware VDI Version 7.3.2
vSphere 6.5
And all management servers to Server 2012R2

i have verified the upgrade matrix and there is no direct upgrade path from 5.2 to 7.3, we need to upgrade to 5.3 then 7.3.

However we also planing to upgrade the OS as well. Hence we are  looking at build new VDI management servers and migrate the VDI golden image and desktops.

Thanks

Can't Connect Using Blast with Either Chrome or Safari

I have a dev box that I am using to test two-factor authentication (2FA).  I can connect using IE11, but I can't connect using Chrome or Safari.  I can connect in production.  Let me clarify, I can't connect whether using 2FA or not.  I get a message that I failed to connect to the Connection server.

We are running Horizon 7.4 with the 7.32 agent and Horizon 4.7 client.

I've been looking at the locked.properties.  Do I have to put an entry in there?

Thanks in advance for any help.
