Persona Management Issue - Slow Logon

$

I have a View 5.0 POC lab setup. I have enabled and configured Persona management as instructed in the admin guide (http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/view/VMware-View-Persona-Management-Deployment-Guide.pdf). The first time a user logs into a virtual desktop from a floating pool and logs off, the persona profile is created on the network share as is it is supposed to. The next time and everytime afterwards the same user logs into a desktop from that same pool, it take 4 minutes for the desktop to show and then more often than not, explorer.exe has stopped responding. I turn off persona management, reboot the desktops and the user logs in every time normally. What am I missing?

I have a seperate pool with a seperate set of test users configured to use Windows Roaming Profiles only and it works like a champ.

Also, it does not appear that Folder Redirection will not work unless you specified that the roaming profile location is set in the "Persona Repository Location" gpo setting. Is that correct?

Thanks

Henry

Instant Clone Pools with different hardware specs / same golden image

We are trial running App Volumes / Instant clones.  Is it possible to setup multiple pools with different memory / # of cores per pool based off the same image / snapshot, or do we need to have a new image per pool?

Horizon View Agent 6.0.2 Windows 8.1 Desktops - Adjusting screen size scale causes mouse pointer to be stuck in top-left corner

Hello,

I'm having some issues when I try to adjust the size scaling option in Windows 8.1 virtual desktop with View agent 6.0.2. When I try to change the scaling thru Control Panel -> Display -> Change the size of all items option (the Toggle Display Settings Control option is disabled per VMware KB: Settings tab is not available in the display control panel of a Horizon View desktop in local mode when t…). After I do this, the mouse pointer suddenly gets locked to the top-left corner, and I'm unable to move the mouse pointer out of that corner as the mouse pointer keeps jumping itself back into it. When I change the scaling back to the original (using keyboard to change the setting), the mouse pointer behavior returns to normal.

Anyone else having this issue?

VMware Persona (Browser Settings)

Hello everybody,

currently I am testing Windows 10 1607 with VMware Horizon View 7.03 and Persona Management.

So far all is looking fine, the only thing that is not "working" correct at the moment are the browser settings and here the two examples:

- Within IE11 when I open www.google.de I am getting the message about data protection, so I accept it

- Within Microsoft Edge when I open it I am getting the welcome screen and my other staff, so I adjust everything to the settings that I want to us

When I log off and log in back to other linked clone desktop within the pool, these both settings about the browsers are NOT saved and I need to configure it again.

Do someone know where these setting are located in (Appdata\Local or AppData\LocalLow) as all other applications are working fine.

Thank you for some feedback here.

unable to logon with CAC to horizon 7.2 instant clone

Good afternoon,

we are trying to get a windows 10 instant clone working on horizon 7.2. when the clone is created and we try to logon we get the following error:

"The attempted logon is invalid. This is due to a bad username or authentication information. An untrusted certificate authority was detected while processing the domain controller certificate used for authentication. There is additional information in the system event log. Please contact your system administrator."

we think it is a SSO issue and made a new keystore to insure all certs were present.  If the newly created clone is not logged on to for about an hour it will let you logon without error.

If we click ok on the error screen we can select "other logon" and then logon with a domain admin account with no issues.

any suggestions?

Thanks,

VDI log-off issue.

Hi,

I am facing one strange issue randomly with random user's, that is when user log-off/sing-off from their VDI session it is not going to refresh the user session and it is going to disconnect state.

on next log-in of user it is saying that there is "no system available and contact system administrators", if I kill the user's disconnected session, user can log-in successfully.

please let me know how we resolve this issue?

note: there is no log's from view saying/ showing errors, I am using latest VMware tools too, my view version is 7.0.2

Thank you,

Vkmr.

Picking the correct setup in VMware situations

There are two different scenarios in a VMware environment. First, there is the classic vRealize setup with elastic design and self-service, which is suitable for small shops. The second is Docker, which is a better option for software as a service shops with a limited number of offerings.

Aspiring gurus should also become acquainted with JavaScript, which holds together various processes, along with PowerShell and PowerCLI, which work in tandem to form the essential glue that holds the automation process in a VMware environment together. Familiarizing yourself with these tools will give you the ability to manage scaling instances. If you're interested in continuing your education, Chef and Puppet are also worth checking out.

DevOps Training methodology does have limitations. For one, it doesn't fit well into legacy environments. This is usually remedied by starting fresh -- however, it's easier said than done in long-deployed, stable environments with huge amounts of legacy hardware and software.

Bimodal and trimodal IT, which were a major topic of discussion at the 2015 national VMUG, helps resolve this issue by running elastic environments separately, rather than on a legacy platform. I, as perhaps as any other sane VMware admin, would not recommend even running a mixed VMware environment. Cloud needs its own hardware, and not making the proper arrangements can create trouble down the road.

Cursor blink rate always stays on FAST

I am running into this weird issue with blinking cursor rate.  This is Windows 7 VMs.

I set the following on the gold image.

We set blinking cursor rate (Control Panel > Keyboard) down to third line from the left.  Save the setting.

Also updated following registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop]

"CursorBlinkRate"="0xffffffff"

"DisableCursorBlink"=dword:00000001

The setting works in gold image but once recomposed VMs does not.  Blinking cursor rate is always set to FAST even if you update it on the VM.

Anybody out there ran into this issue...

Collecting View Agent logs on a non-persistent desktop after a crash

$

Hello:

We have a couple of users that have VMs within a non-persistent desktop pool that will completely crash once in a while (the VM will disconnect, and any applications they had open, will be forced closed).  When they log back in, everything is fine other than the applications that were closed.  I know the VM is crashing as in the Horizon Console we will see it get refreshed and the user will obviously log in to a different VM when they re-connect.

My question is if there is a way to redirect the View Agent logs to a location that will not get wiped when the VM crashes and gets refreshed.  Ideally it would be nice if I could change the logs location for one particular user and just have it write to their profile directory or some persistent place so that when the VM crashes we can retain these logs.  Otherwise they are flushed away when the VM is refreshed/rebooted.  I know there is a pool setting to refresh the logs when logging off, however this is a VM crash not really a logoff event so I'm not sure if that setting would even help setting to "Never".

Thanks for the help!

Does Horizon View Windows 10 UWP Client support F13-F24?

$

When connecting to a virtual desktop using the Windows 10 UWP app, we can't get software that uses F13-F24 to work (Shift F1 - Shift F12).  Shift F1 just registers as F1 and not F13

When I connect using the standard Windows Desktop app, it works fine.

Anyone know of a trick to get the UWP app to pass Shift F1 through Shift F12?

Horizon View and ADFS 3.0

So I noticed that in our View admin console it has some options for a SAML Authenticator and since we're using ADFS 3.0 as out main SSO idp for a number of systems I was thinking of making use of it for View.

After some reading most of the docs talk about using the VMware identity server, is that a required middle piece?  Or can the connection servers talk SAML directly with ADFS?

Also does anyone have some info on which attributes view wants via SAML?  (IE info for setting up the ADFS side for View's SAML auth?)

Thanks.

Some Questions about RDP VC Bridge

$

Hello there,

I have some questions regarding the SDK for the Virtual Channel Bridge.

1)  I am confused about the string I found in the code. It states that GetSDKVersion only applies to PCoIP Sessions. Am I guessing right that this is obsolete?

   LOG_MESSAGE("The SDK Version string of locally   running SDK is : %s \n", localVersionStr);

   LOG_MESSAGE("The SDK Version number of locally   running SDK is : %d \n", localVersionNum);

   if (ok == FALSE) {

LOG_MESSAGE("Not in PCoIP Session - GetSDKVersion only applies to PCoIP sessions.\n");

   } else {

LOG_MESSAGE("The SDK Version string of remotely running SDK is : %s \n", remoteVersionStr);

LOG_MESSAGE("The SDK Version number of remotely running SDK is : %d \n", remoteVersionNum);

   }

}

This Screenshot is made from a connection running with blast:

vcbridgepingpong.JPG

2)  Why am I getting the msgbox when I am running a normal rdp session via Microsoft “Remote Desktop Connection”. I am not sure if I am getting the concept of TimerCallback() right. I even get the msgbox while I am connected and running my pingpong.. and why is my .dll used for the normal connection?

VOIDCALLBACK TimerCallback(PVOIDlpParameter, BOOLEANreserved)

{

       clock_t timeNew = clock();

       LOG_MESSAGE("TimeNew: ", timeNew);

       float secondsPast = ((float)(timeNew - timeMsgReceived)) / CLOCKS_PER_SEC;

       LOG_MESSAGE("seconds past: ", secondsPast);

       if (secondsPast >= 11)

{ DeleteTimerQueueTimer(NULL, timerHandle, NULL);

             int msgbox = MessageBox(NULL, "Warning! The Connection is slow or has broken", "Client", MB_OK);

       }

}

Does this correlate with what i found in the thread VMware Horizon View RDP Virtual Channel Bridge SDK

3) When running the .exe in a view rdp session it says:

notinviewsession.JPG

    But I am in a View Session. It is working for Blast and PCoIP.

I appreciate any hint

Best regards

Hannes

Linux thin clients, are they worth to look at?

How good is a Horizon view client on Linux or to ask another way are there any missing features or limitations compared to Horizon view client on windows ?

Which vendor would you recommend to go with in case of Linux ? As I looked each of them have so custom version of Linux which makes me wonder how good are they supporting it ? Would it be possible to install some standard distro like Ubuntu, Debian, ... on the clients ?

I have also considered PCoIP Zero clients but they are to limited.

Instant Clone Desktop stuck in DELETING Status

Hi all,

I have an instant clone pool that has a desktop that is stuck in deleting status in the admin console.  The destop in the VI Client is still there and i can console in.  I can shut down and restart with no affect at all.  Admin console still says deleting.  Tried to remove and recover and no luck.  Still the same.  I also tried to restart teh management services on the host that it resides on with no luck also.  It appears that all other desktops are working just fine in that same pool.  Any idea how to get this vm back to working status??  Any comments are welcome.  Thanks

How can I delete leftover instant clone parent, replica and template VM's?

$

Someone renamed the datacenter and cluster which broke the pool. I was able to change the name of both back and delete the VM's thru view administrator.  However this pool is stuck on deleting and has left behind several parent, replica and template VM's.

Obviously the procedure for cleaning this up with composer doesn't work since there is no composer server/database.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Remove Scanner not powered on Error Message

$

Hello All,

We are migrating our horizon environment from 5.4 to 7.2. We have more than 1100 VMs on a single pool. we are in progress with staged migration. We use the cloned copy of same master image in 7.2 environment except we updated the agent on it. We have a signature capture application on the Image that scans signatures. We have 2 types of users; some users scan the signature and some verify the signature. Users who scans have scanners connected and users who verifies the signature don’t have scanner. Application check the presence of the scanner and if present, application is ready to scan. If not users can use in, verify mode. In our 5.4 Infrastructure, when we open the application and if the scanner not present, no error message is displayed. But when we moved to 7.2, a message is displayed when the user open the application and if the scanner is not present "Scanner is not powered on or it is not connected properly. Please check the hardware and try again." Most of the time the application crashes after the message and few times we have observed that even the Horizon Client is crashed. Is there any way to fix this issue like if we could change the setting, not to display error? Horizon VMs does not display the error message and the application opening normally.

Thanks

Rajesh

Vmware Horizon View - Linked Clone "Trust Relationship" Registry Fix not working post recompose

$

We have Linked Clone VDI's and to avoid the 30 days VDIs to change their machine account passwords every 30 days which affects nonpersistent desktops we receive the below error:

The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed

To avoid this issue,we disable the automatic password change, as follows:

On our gold image, open the Registry editor.

Navigate to the following key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\Netlogon\Parameters

Change the value of DisablePasswordChange to 1.

But the problem is when we perform this on gold image and take the snapshot and recompose, the VDI's registry changes again to.

DisablePasswordChange to 0

I am not getting why it's changing the registry where the parent VM's registry value is 1 but the recomposed VDI is 0.

Can you please help me whether I am missing any steps here.
