Setting a fixed desktop resolution

$
0
0

Hello,

we are using the latest version of VMWare View.

On some desktops we need to provide a fixed desktop resolution, because some applications won't work right, if they don't get the desired resolution. The big problem is: Auto-Adjustment of the View Client.

We changed the AD GPO, so the user can set the desired display resolution in the control panel. However, if they set it 1280x1024 and then maximize the View window, the VM will change to the displays native resolution. We would like to deactivite that (at best for specific VMs). This must work the other way, too: If the user sets the resolution to 1920x1200 it should stay that way, even if the monitor only has 1680x1050 pixels. Horizontal scrollbars in fullscreen mode, would be fine!

I hope, someone can tell us, how to achieve this.

In VMWare Workstation this was easily possible.

Best Regards,

Daniel

VMware View Broker Web Interface slow

Does anyone else find the Web Interface for VMware View slow?

I constantly get the small spinning clock when clicking around through the settings.

Is this normal?

viewbroker vm has the following specs

10GB RAM

2vCPU (runs on a HP BL460c G7 Blade with intel Xeon X5650 CPU @ 2.66GHz and the Blade currently has ONLY this VM so its doing nothing)

I noticed it runs quicker in google chrome than IE but its still a little slow

define slow: takes 1-3 seconds of spinning clock each time I click somewhere

anyone got any tips to speed up the interface?

or has anyone got a video of someone clicking through a working interface so I can compare my speeds etc.

Active Directory for DaaS Solution

Hi,

We are in the process of designing a Desktop as a Service solution for one of our customers. Hardware and software infrastructure will be provided and managed by us and customer will pay per desktop they use. Our infrastructure will be installed at customers datacenter. In this kind of scenario how we should setup the AD for managing our infrastructure? One option is to directly connect all our servers to customers domain. In this option we will not have any control over AD functions and will have to depend on customer. Second option is to have our own domain and use it for our servers. In this option how VMware View should be configured? Virtual Desktops needs to be created in customer’s domain and their users should have the access to the VD.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Your ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Duplicate folders being created on the datastore with host caching enabled

Upgraded to the following this weekend:
View Connection Server 5.1.2-928164
View Composer 3.0.0-691993
vCenter 5.1.0b-947939
ESXi 5.1.0a-838463

After the upgrade I installed the latest VM tools, View Agent 5.1.2-928164, and the Teradici audio driver on my snapshot.  I have not upgraded the machine hardware version.

I enabled host caching on my pool, and the pool is set to refresh immediately on logoff.  When I shutdown or logoff of the View session I see an error in vCenter like this one:

Reconfigure virtual machine VMPool-3 Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [VM_POOL_LUN-12] VMPool-3/VMPool-3-check-point.vmdk already exists

Then it creates a new folder with an _1 on the datastore because of this:
VMPool-3 (original)
VMPool-3_1 (duplicate)

Once I turn off host caching the problem does not occur.

Has anyone seen this issue?  I currently have a ticket opened with VMware.

recompose floating vs assigned.

Per http://pubs.vmware.com/view-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.view.administration.doc/GUID-FDEFFAA9-08F2-40F9-83D3-2E7C654BE3B1.html

It talks about the difference course of action of doing a recompose to an assigned vs floating desktop.

#In a dedicated-assignment pool, unassigned linked clones are deleted and recreated.  Ok easy enough.

But for the floating desktop is says:    In a floating-assignment pool, all selected linked clones are recomposed..

So I must be an idot I thought a recompose was deleted the old OS/Delta disk then creating new ones off the new replica.

Besides the un-assing part was is the difference?

VMware View Persona Quick Launch Toolbar not 'sticking' on XP Clones

We have a VMware View 5.1.2 build-928164 install with a floating POOL using View Persona. We have setup several other View installs with floating pools, but all with Windows 7, this is the first one running Windows XP.

As there does not appear to be a specific Windows XP script to apply to the MASTER, we just edited the Windows 7 one and applied it to the XP-MASTER. i.e. Set VSS to Auto, User Hive Clean-Up Service installed etc.

After performing a roll-out to the linked-clones the users cannot customise thier quick launch toolbar icons. Well, they can, however as soon as they shut down and logon (different VM from floating pool) the icons from the quick launch disapear.

no_quick_launch.png

Although, when attempting to turn the quick launch toolbar back on - it is already 'ticked', just not displaying.

quick_launch_still_ticked.png

Simply, unlicking the quick launch toolbar, and then re-clicking it, turns the toolbar back on and the user defined shortcut items appear.

icons_back.png

This is a bit of a hassle for the end users to perforem every day, and there is obviously something wrong somewhere.

All of the other Persona aspects function corectly. i.e. Desktop icons sync between floating pool VM's.

Any suggestings would be most appriciated.

Problem connecting to https:\\[servername]\administrator

After a reboot i cant connec to my view connect server. I run view 5.1

Netstat show that the server isn't listening to port 443. I think this has something to do with certs. a while ago I tried to add a wildcard cert from rapid ssl to the server - useing commonname vmd - I've removed this from the cert store  - because it didn't work.

Is there a way to remake selfsigned certs for 5.1 ? Or do you guys have any other ways to debug / fix this ?

Limit login to pools via device or network

Hello,

I have some kind of special request.

For our meetingrooms I want everyone to be entitled to logon in the meeting-pool, but they should not be able to connect there via their Desktop-Zeroclients  (because then the systems would defenitly be used as test systems etc.)

Is there a way to restrict pools to specific Clients or networks?

Currently I solve this by using custom accounts per device and disable SSO, but this way the users can not login to something other than the meetingroom-VMs.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Best regards,

Marius

Hi, I'm new in this thing about thin clients and virtualization. On my work place we have 30 wyse c10 thin clients running with vmware. I found a guide to configure a virtualization enviroment and I follow it. So let me tell you what a I did.

  • I configure two phisical server's with esxi 5.0
  • Then configure a vCenter to manage to manage those two host's.
  • The I create a vm and install it the vmware View Administrator 5.1.1
  • I started creating my vm's for my thin clients. (Windows XP+Office+VMware Tools+VMWare Agent)
  • I configured my View Administrator and added my vCenter.
  • I added a Pool with 30 vm's to work with the Protocol RDP (C10 terminal has no PCoIP), in Policies, USB access is allow.
  • The C10 has been working with no problems, I can connect to the server, display de vm, but the usb port's are not working.

If I want to connect a USB Memory it doesn't work. To be honest I have no idea. I hope you could help me.

Thank's a lot.

Petition towards a Linux View Agent - Sign/drop a line if interested!!

$

In this community you can find a couple of threads where people are asking the development of a View Linux agent.

This agent would make the option of a linux desktop pool in View manager available.

I understand this is not as easy as it sounds, there are many linux distro's and technical difficulties to achieve this goal.

On top of that, if we ever get this agent, we will expect it to works as good as the Windows version, have PCOIP and USB redirection, ...

Therefor I would like to make a suggestion to VMware to develop a virtual appliance where one or two of the most used linux distro's are prepared by VMware. Limited support is acceptable if you tampered with the virtual appliance and broke the view addon. In my opinion Ubuntu LTS is a strong candidate to have such a virtual appliance.

I ask everyone who would like to see this suggestion developed to drop a line in this thread  AND sign the petition.

"I second the request" would be enough to let VMware know how many of you are out there requesting this feature.

SPREAD THE WORD AND SIGN!!

View Client login receives AD Login Prompt

$

I have a View infrastructure setup in a 2 way trust configuration.

When users login via the trusted domain (not the domain where the view servers sit) the users receive an Active Directory login prompt, users can then input there creds there and login fine but I would like the prompt to auto login same as if the users were sitting in the view domain.

Is that possible?

How do I prevent Windows 7 VMs from Going to "Sleep"?

$

I am new at this whole VMWare thing so please forgive my ignorance. We in the process of deploying a number of virtual desktops using VMWare View via Dell FX-100 Zero Clients.  After a few calls to VMWare support to get everything up and running, for the most part I am extremely satisfied.  However, after 10 minutes of inactivity, the VMs go to "sleep", I've set Windows to "High Performance" mode and set everything to "Never", I've changed the OSD on the FX100 to "0 (disabled), nothing seems to work.  Is this something that I am just going to have to deal with, or is there something I'm missing.  The reason this is important is that once we go into full production, these machines are going to be used in a Public Safety 911 call center and need to remain up at all times.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I wanted to test out this new zero client and it says it supports rdp, pcoip and citrix.  The problem is that there are 4 different version of this zero client from 200- 400 and they all seem the same!

I bought one that was 350 and it cannot do vmware view with pcoip!  Does anyone know truly what the differences are as the online marketing seems to be not accurate.

Correct Monitor Drivers for View Image

$
0
0

Guys,

I need a sanity check. Windows 7 parent image, View 5.1, WYSE P20 zero client, latest 4.x firmware.

View 5.1.0 build 704644, VMware SVGA 3D Version 7.14.1.1080 Date: 4/17/2012 Video driver displayed in the parent VM settings.

Customer complains that the monitor displays generic driver, and thinks that the display should display Dell.

The Parent VM is an encapsulated VM that does not see the monitor as a piece of needed hardware, as the VM is being provisioned from the back end through the zero client. I have searched and cannot find anything that shows that a monitor driver should be included in the parent image.

Am I on track, or totally off base?

Please educate me if I am wrong.

Thanks,

View user's being kicked out

$

I've been running View 5.0 since it was released with almost no issues. Within the past two weeks I've been made aware of an issue where users are all being kicked out of their desktops. They are able to log back in and re-connect to their desktops. However they are being kicked out every few hours. And it appears to be happening to everyone at the same time. I've looked at the event logs on the View connection server and the only thing I see relates to some kind of VC Outage.

Event ID 103:

VC_OUTAGE:Url:https://vi01.domain.local:443/sdk

Event ID 102:

VirtualCenter https://vi01.domain.local:443/sdk is currently unavailable - attempting to reconnect

Event ID 103:

OFFLINE:Server:cn=1a7b2a88-ee5a-4905-a1ca-f1c35fcbb697,ou=servers,dc=vdi,dc=vmware,dc=int;Pool:cn=domain-pool-01,ou=server groups,dc=vdi,dc=vmware,dc=int;DNS:ipHostNumber=vm-wks-19.domain.local, ipHostNumberOverride not set;

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is becoming very annoying.
