Persona not saving pinned items

If I pin something to my taskbar or start menu, it does not sync to persona.  I'm just wondering if there's a setting i'm missing.

If I configure the Folder Redirection setting for Application Data, it works, but I have to have a second repository folder for this, as it will not save to the Username.V2 folder and creates another folder with just the username.  I thought this was working for me during my pilot of View, with a different master image.  I did not have this Folder Redirection setting set on my pilot.

Horizon 7 View Persona redirected folders

Hi,

I have issue with using persona management and redirected folders like desktop, documents, music etc. I use persona on Windows 7 without any issue. Now I try Windows 10 (1607) like linked-clones desktop. When I loged in to the linked-clone desktop, I don't have access to redirected folder. When I look to the share storage, I just see new profile folder, but this folder is without any permission. It is really strange, because I use same GPO like on Windows 7 linked-clones desktops. At last, I tried to login in Windows 10 golden image and everything was OK, folders werre created and all redirected folders work. After this, I was able to use linked-clone desktop.

So here is my issue. Why I am not able to automaticly create personal folders on linked-clone desktops, If this is work on golden image? All desktop are in the same OU with the same GPO policy.

Thank you for your advice

VMware Horizon View

Hi All,

I'm from Myanmar and VMware Horizon View is very new technology trend for developing country.

I would like to know how should we estimate bandwidth to access VDI desktop from out side connection.

Could you please share with your experience in this with ThinApp application access experience.

One more things, I would like to know best used cases to access Virtual Application with AD user account without VDI.

It would be very helpful for me.

Disaster recovery plan with local storage on Horizon 7

Hi,

I have 2 ESXi servers and each server has its own local strorage. 100 users will connect to Horizon desktops.

When I create a pool, the Connection server creates desktops correcty by allocating 50 desktops on each ESXi.

Now I'm not sure what will happen if one ESXi server fails. I would like the 50 "failed desktops" to be recreated on the other ESXi. Is it possible and what would be the recommended configuration?

Thanks

Deploying Linked Clones to Multiple vLANs From One Parent

Has anyone deployed this setup in their environment? I've come across this KB as well as this blog about it, but, wouldn't mind some discussion with people who are doing it.

We have 3 /21 subnets currently, but really only a need for ONE parent image. It's become a challenge when recomposing pools in our environment to keep track of the subnet we're switching to this week/month. The ability to deploy from a single parent but, preferably, randomize the selection of a vLAN would be great. Kinda similar to how Horizon load balances the storage you select ahead of time when creating your pool. From what I read though, I'm not positive it's random at all, and it looks like this methodology can only be implemented when creating a NEW pool. Modifying an existing pool isn't possible. It's not the end of the world, but, if I am mistaken and we CAN modify existing, and randomize, all the better.

Thanks in advance.

the group policy client service did not shutdown properly after receiving a preshutdown control and persona management did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control

Hi

Here's a summary of the issue and our environment.

We introduced block inhereitance at the top level of the ou that contains our desktop portion of AD. This ou also contains the view OUs which also have inheritance blocked on them and relevant policies linked so specific view policies like persona management should be unaffected by any change in the desktop admin OU although of course the users will still be affected.

After making this change (within five minutes( a couple of people reported the following error message.

windows could not connect to the Group Policy Client Service. Please consult with your

system administrator.

Another user reported an error relating to the event service service not starting.

In the case of the first message this user was able to log on a few hours later with no issues.

In the case of the other user we tested logging on as them on blast and via the client and were sometimes successful and sometimes not with no discernable pattern.

The following day we had three more users with the group policy client service error. In all three cases they were able to log in after waiting a few minutes but there personas were back to the default. We had to restore the personas from backup

the following error messages were in their even logs.

the group policy client service did not shutdown properly after receiving a preshutdown control and persona management did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control

There were also messages relating to the DCs being uncontable but availablity of these is 100%.

I've found many threads elsewhere relating to the group policy error and none of the answers seem relavant to view

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8fbf6f58-84dc-4a15-abbc-24a85630f31b/group-policy-client-services-takes-a-long-time-to-shutdown?forum=w7itprogeneral

in this thread another admin complains that every time they make a gpo change they get this error.

We've reverted the GPO change and the issue has gone away. Is anyone familiar with this issue at all.

The info I have to hand on our view setup is:

VMware view 5.3

DCs are at 2008 R2

Affected users were from an automated pool on linked clones

mainly linked-clone pools

Sorry if my info is incomplete. I'm not out view adminstrator. Happy to dig out any other info.

Currently we're afraid to touch group policy at all at the desktop admin OU in case anything breaks. We have over 100 users who depend on this service so we're walking on eggshells.

Vmware View - PCOIP - Random Disconnects - High Ram usage

We have desktop pools (Floating and Persistent) that are having issues by disconnecting with
a black screen. It occurs only when the memory RAM is getting used by iexplore,
chrome, Firefox, adobe reader, etc. All of sudden, the screen goes black and the
user cannot reconnect. It occurs mostly at the end of the day. It can happen
when the user is in Outlook, Word. My co-worker saw the black screen when he
wanted to preview a picture with the default photo viewer in Windows 7. The
issue was Adobe Reader that was using 650mb.

Here are the VM Specs:

2 vcpus

1536mb

VMware Tools 9.4.5.1598834

VMware View Agent 5.3.1.1634134

VMware SVGA 3D 7.14.1.2021

Servers ESXi 5.5 1623387

The swap file is on letter D (1536mb)

Desktop Pool Settings:

Default Protocol: PCOIP

Let the users choosing..: Yes

Max Monitors: 2

Max Resolution: 1920x1200

I tried 4 monitors, force PCOIP with 3D disabled, but no
luck.

The OS, Persona, Persistent Disks are ISCSI-connected on
a Dell Equalogic PS6100XV.

I can create the issue with «testlimit64.exe» from
SysInternal by setting a 1700mb leak. It goes like my co-worker, previewing a
photo can make happen the black screen crash. If I kill the process that eats
the memory, I can reconnect to the machine.

The weird thing, we tried «testlimit64.exe» on another
pool with another golden image, we couldn't reproduce the issue. It has the
same specs HW and Desktop pool settings, except 1 vcpu only and use another SAN
Dell Equalogic PS4100x ...

Here are the logs when it disconnects:

Has anyone repurposed Dell or HP laptops into zero clients? The intent is to use existing laptops but remove the OS on the laptop and strictly use the VDI provided laptop image for a training environment and reduce overall administration costs, patches, update software issues, etc.

In an internal View deployment with two connection servers what are the recommendations regarding the PCoIP Secure Gateway ?

Use PCoIP Secure gateway or uncheck it and allow View client connecting directly to desktops in port 4172 ?

Thank you

September Windows 7 update MS16-101 user change password initiated using Ctrl+Alt+Del - Change a password... fails

Is anyone else experiencing difficulties with users ability to change passwords since applying MS16-101

Workaround 1, opening port 464, has solved the problem but this seems like a less secure option. Ideally, the communication between the virtual desktop, connection server and domain controller would use Kerberos instead of NTLM.

It would appear that currently, the horizon view client authenticates with the connection server which then authenticates against the domain controller. Perhaps it uses NTLM instead of Kerberos? I am surprised that there are not more posts like this.

The message that users get is "The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure htat you can contact the server that authenticated you."

Shift key stuck in 7.0.1 when using Blast

$

Hi All

I have a very odd issue since upgrading to Horizon 7.0.1 which only happens when using BLAST. When a user hits caps lock the environment acts as though the shift key is being held down. Hitting caps again has no effect. The user then has to actually hold shift and hit any key to get it to go back to normal. Much like an old typewriter. I know you can set this behaviour in Windows but I've made sure the option is off. I've even enabled and disabled it just in case. This doesn't happen on PCoIP. I've tried it from Macs, Windows 10 and Windows 7 PCs. I have a Ubuntu desktop at home and it only occasionally does this.

I've created a brand new desktop pool with the latest agent, tried the existing pools on the old (6.2.3) agent and with the new. Uninstalled the agent/tools then reinstalled. Nothing works. I've even noticed this issue when launching an application over Blast thats hosted on a server 2012 RDS host.

Has anyone seen anything similar? I've got a SR open with VMware who are investigating but there's no know issue regarding this. I can only assume its something with the connection server since the upgrade. I've rebooted and no luck.

Default printer is not remembered in VDI

Hi,

we have vmware vSphere6 and VDI desktop infrastructure. Every time user loggs in into VDI his default printer is not the printer which it made default in previous login. Vm pool is Automated Desktop Pool with source vCenter (linked clone). This happens on win8 or win10, it doesn't matter.

I found this in discussion:

I found the sollution eventually.

Its realated to the "network location awareness" service

2 options:

[s]1. (for every user) disable the "Network Location Awareness" Service in the services console and include it in your gold image

(i believe its related to: every guest generates there own network ID, if the ID is different NLA sets the default printer to the system default (which in my case is the PDF creator)[/s] (sorry guys, this was NOT the sollution)

2. If you do not want to disable the NLA service,  Do it on a per-user base in the current user registry (see below)

Create a Key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers ... named: Defaults

Then create an entry (string value): Disabled and set it to: 1

--- printer_per_user.reg ----

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Defaults]
"Disabled"="1"

but registry editing and disabling service didn't helped. Any more ideas?

View Persona - Users are randomely receiving a temporary profile

$

Hello,

First off, let me say that we have searched high and low for a solution to this problem.

We manage a small VMWare infrastructure with 25 users on a floating pool using View Persona management and have been doing so for the past 2 years. Lately though, we are having an issues that used to happen only very rarely before, where a user logs in, gets assigned a clone and gets an empty temporary profile. The user must then log off and log back on to get his actual profile.

The typical event id we see on the clones when this happens is #1509 which specifies the following:

Windows cannot copy file \\path_to_profile\ntuser.pol to location C:\users\xxx\ntuser.pol. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights. Detail - Access denied.

It is very nerving mostly because the cause cannot be identified easily. It happens to all users but completely randomly. The share on which the profiles are stored has the correct permissions and each user profile folder is created with SYSTEM, the user and Administrators. If this where a permission issue on either the share or the profiles, I believe the error should be easy to reproduce. The only thing that is constant, is the fact that it concernes the ntuser.pol file.

We thought the anti-virus, Kaspersky, was causing the issue as it wouldn't have been the first time but we have excluded all view folders from being scanned, we have also added the avp.exe process to the excluded processes (see GPO below)

Has anyone encountered this? Is it a bug? Is there a fix? Is there something I'm missing?

Our infrastructure is based on the following:

View connection server 7.0.1.3988955

View Horizon Agent 7.0.1.3989057

The VDIs are based on Windows 7 x64. We do not do any refreshes, only recompose during the week-ends to apply new updates.

GPO:

Thanks in advance if someone has an idea...

Cheers,

Marc

Persona Manager and Folder redirection

I have a small issue in that I want to use persona manager but I have folder redirection for all of our users.  WE just redirect certain folder like Desktop, etc.  The problem comes in with View.  I have a bunch of doctors that insist on using multiple desktops (persistent and non-persistent) to get their work done on a daily basis.  They use Persistent so they have their OUTLOOK and when they roam to an exam room they want to use their NON-Persistent desktops.  I'm pretty sure I can accomplish what I want with Persona Management but the folder redirection kind of hinders that.  Is there a way for me to use Both so that I can get all the docs to utilize only one pool of computers on View??  Can UEM help me in any way with this issue?  Any comments or suggestions are welcome.  Thanks!

Horizon View 6.0.1 - ADAM data error

Hello guys i am having this problem in my production environment.

I cannot create or edit any desktop pool. When i try to perform this operations the message "ADAM data error" is displayed. Searching more this is what appears in the logs:

ADAM Error code: 2 103 com.vmware.vdi.admin.ui.DesktopBean.saveDesktop(SourceFile:2396)

com.vmware.vdi.adamwrapper.exceptions.ADAMServerException: [LDAP: error code 16 - 00000057: LdapErr: DSID-0C090B3D, comment: Error in attribute conversion operation, data 0, v1db1

I did these workarounds:

  • Restart vCenter Server and View Connection Servers.
  • Force replication between ADAM databases and the replication is okay.
  • Verify with vdmadmin the LDAP collisions, nothing appeared.
  • Check the integrity of the ADAM database and all the attributes are there.
  • Check connection with View Composer and vCenter and it is okay.

Also this problem appeared when i upgrade from Horizon View 5.2 to Horizon view 6.0.1

Any help would be graceful.

Thanks you in advance!

Horizon USB pass through issue

$

Hi,

I'm experiencing an odd issue when attaching a specific USB device through the VM Horizon View client (v3.5 -4.2). The device is a National Instruments NI myRIO. I have a group of students who are using the hardware in the class while connected to the View client. 35 of the 40 students have no issues connecting to the device. The 5 that have issues are mainly using windows 10 and are using versions 4.0-4.2 of the view client. When connecting the myRIO to the host machine it is recognized in the host's device manager the same way: as "Generic USB-EEM Network Adapter", whether it passes through properly or not. The only difference I could find between hosts where the device passed through properly and it didn't was in the logs.

For a host that failed to pass the device through these two lines are consistently in the logs:

2016-09-06T11:41:53.166-04:00DEBUG(1110-1128)<vmware-usbd> [vmware-view-usbd] Filter Result: [UsbDeviceId: 4000000a3923762f] On enumeration of device: 1/5. Name: National Instruments NI myRIO-1900 [NI-myRIO-1900-0308e394]

What's interesting is that on the hosts that work it still doesn't actually find the descriptor:

2016-09-29T13:14:07.440-04:00DEBUG(127C-0FB8)<vmware-usbd> [vmware-view-usbd] Filter Result: [UsbDeviceId: 400000063923762f] Descriptor(s) not available. It appears that regardless of whether it passes through or not client is not receiving the device descriptors.  What I don't understand  is why certain hosts seem to ignore the lack of descriptors and connect anyway and some block the device immediately. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Linked clone persistent disk stuck on local storage

$

I have a Linked clone pool where View Manager says the persistent disk is on local host storage.  When I recompose a vm in the pool, or try to delete it I get the error message:

Failed to delete VM - Failed to resolve id of disk '[local storage] vm-006-vdm-user-disk-D-9fa24e1a-e2e5-4227-8ce0-dc6774a12e21.vmdk' from vm-006

When I browse the datastore I do not even see this vmdk.  I understand going from a local storage to a NAS for a linked clone might cause trouble and am seeking some help.

I was hoping to detach the persistent disk and reattach it, but I get the above error message.  Any help is appreciated.

I CAN create a new vm in the pool no problem and it goes to the NAS.  It's just the existing ones.

thanks.
