View 4.6 - recreate template from clone

$
0
0

Due to various one of our persistent clone pools lost it's master/base/template image.

Thinking I was smart, I created a clone of one of the clones, qucikprep'd it, renamed it, joined it back to the domain and re-installed the VMware View Agent.

Now, when clones are created from this VM, they retain the name. I can't find anything obvious in the composer logs, but I feel like I'm missing something rather fundamental.

View is creating the computer account, but the machine is maintaining it's link to the original computer account.

What would be the correct steps to rescue/recreate the template for this pool and where have I gone so horribly wrong?

Cheers,

Simon

HP t520 Thin Client + Horizon View

We have a customer that is currently using HP t520 Thin Clients that connect to RDS Farms. We want to build a VDI solution for them if we can utilize these existing thin clients. I have acquired one to do some testing in a lab environment.  I have a Horizon View 7 environment up with a few different pools, dedicated full vms, linked clones, etc.  The testing has been going great so far except when I try to utilize the  thin client. The Desktop View agent works fine and the iOS client connects and works fine.  The thin client horizon client (I've tried 3.2 and 3.2.1) will connect but I only ever get a black screen for a few seconds thin it closes and kicks me back to wher I can select the pool.  Does anybody have any ideas on what it might be. I've googled around and found that it could be related to display settings, which I have checked and done some testing to no avail.  I can't seem to find any examples of anybody having trouble with this particular thin client.

Media control outside windowed view causes Horizon client to redirect input

I noticed an apparent bug while working with my VDI session in VMWare Horizon Client. I have focus in the Horizon window then move my mouse out of the window and press the volume up, volume down, or play/pause buttons on my keyboard to control music on my local PC and after about 1 second, VMWare Horizon recaptures my input in the remote desktop. The mouse is suddenly centered in the windowed VMWare Horizon Client and the media controls no longer control my local PC. I discovered if I click on an application on my local PC, even just clicking my desktop, the input is not redirected. The strangest part is that it works on my local PC for approximately 1 second allowing me to tap my volume button 2-3 times before redirecting my input again.

Windows XP "Password will expire soon" prompt preventing VM reboot?

$

Something I've seen a few times lately:

Using persistent Windows XP VMs with View Agent 5

-User calls complaining that he can't connect to his VM

-View Administrator shows his status as "Connected", but the Events show multiple Audit Failures: There were no machines available that reported protocol [PCOIP] as ready

-Opening the VM Console in vSphere Client reveals the prompt "Your password will expire in X days, do you want to change it now?"

-Clicking "No" causes the VM to restart (cleanly, not a crash)

I'm pretty sure the root cause is that something (Windows Update, or maybe the user himself) initiated a restart, but that password change prompt is waiting for input, preventing the VM from shutting down.

Has anybody else seen this?

What would be the best way to deal with it?

Advice needed.

VMWare ESXi 6.0
VMWare View 6.2.0
Nvidia Grid K2 VGPU

Linked Clones with dedicated, auto assignment. Never refreshed or recomposed unless done manually.
Windows 7 with Persistant Disk D:, Disposable Disk W:

Once in while, usually during the weekend, the powered OFF desktops are losing some of it's customization.

Here's some of the examples:

Chrome browser back to defaults.  Bookmarks, bookmarks bar and home button reset.
VCenter login shows the first login info tab "What is a VCenter, what is a cluster etc.
RDP and Putty previous sessions cleared.
Explorer - show hidden files, file extensions etc reset.
*.txt was associated with notepad ++, reset to notepad.
Windows recent list empty...

The weird part, some of the settings in HKCU are removed.

Profile is located on the persistant disk in d:\users.

I browsed the view client and view composer log and found nothing that would indicate such reset.
Should I look at the Storage Accelerator settings (VSA)?  Regenerate OS Disk is set at every 7 days.
How about Reclaim VM disk space when exceeds 1GB..

Any ideas?  Has anyone experienced this before?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

IE White Screen of Death in VDI

$

We have an issue going on in our VDI environment that has been to this point, impossible to nail down. Our users complain of instances where IE (IE11) will load with just a white screen, and spin for minutes on end. Dragging the window makes it cascade visually across the screen, essentially like a hung session. Eventually the window is closeable, and if the user reopens IE, perfect, no issue. The issue is completely un-repeatable so far. We have no process to make this happen on demand. It's totally random.

We're a Horizon 6.2 environment, we're utilizing linked clones with App Volumes and UEM. Windows 7, IE11.

One setting I found and was curious about is this one shown below, the software rendering setting in IE. The clusters our users are in I would classify as not visually high performing. IE we don't have upper end graphical cards in the hosts for any diagnostic imaging. Would this setting make a difference for the issue we've seen possibly, would it be completely benign, or should we have it enabled anyway? Right now it's disabled.

Monitoring View with Nagios

$

Hi,

I thought I'd post this in here as I've searched high and low and found barely any information on this particular topic.

I've recently deployed Nagios within our company in order to monitor key hosts and services. In doing so this got me thinking how I could use Nagios to monitor certain things within VMware View. Having played around with Exchange PowerShell scripts and Nagios I started to look at VMware PowerCLI. I couldn’t work out a way to pull the information I wanted using the default PowerCLI commands so I started to have a dig around online. During my investigations I then came across the Unofficial VMware View PowerShell cmdlets.

http://cliffdavies.com/blog/vmware/unofficial-advanced-vmware-view-powershell-cmdlets/

Using the above I was able to extract the very information I was after, which I could then run through a script and ultimately report this back to Nagios. So with this in mind I set about writing some scripts for VMware View monitoring.

Having just experienced a major issue where all 350 View VMs went into an ‘already used’ state, meaning no one could logon, I thought what better place to start than to write a script to count the number of ‘problem desktops’ and then report this back to Nagios for alerting and notification purposes.

Using Get-Desktops within the unofficial cmdlets I was able to pull out the ‘state’ of each VM Desktop. This is then run through an ‘if’ statement to find ‘problem’ desktops and a count is produced. The count is then compared to the warning and critical levels defined within the script and then the script exits with the relevant code, 0, 1 or 2, to pass this back to Nagios along with the current number of problem desktops.

The script is executed on the View Connection Server itself using NSClient++ which is initiated by Nagios using a check_nrpe command. There is a great article on telnetport25.com about executing PowerShell scripts using check_nrpe & NSClient++. - http://www.telnetport25.com/2012/01/installing-nagios-on-ubuntu-server-11-10-then-monitoring-windows-and-exchange-serverspart-3setting-up-basic-exchange-2010-monitoring/ - In fact I followed the tutorials from that site for my entire Nagios build, they really are great.

One thing I also had to do was to amend the uadv_vmware_view.psm1 file included with the unofficial cmdlets so that it doesn’t print to screen when a successful connection is made to the View Connection Server. I just amended the ‘if’ statement within the psm1 file to achieve this, pretty simple. I have attached this below too.

So now I will get alerted by email and visually on our IT monitor when we hit a certain amount of ‘problem’ desktops, which is great as I don’t want to have to check the View Admin console every hour or so.

If anyone wants any further information please feel free to let me know and I’ll be happy to oblige.

This also leads me to think what else can be monitored within View using these cmdlets?

View Event logs showing The Pending session on machine %Machine name% for user %username% has expired, but users are not experiencing any issues

Hello Experts,

Recently, I installed Horizon View 7 for a client and on their parent images uninstalled the old version of the view agent and installed the latest 7.0.1.  So an odd thing is occurring, out of 90 users, 30 of these users are showing the following warning in the View Admin event logs after 15 minutes of logging on and happens every day to the same users.

The Pending session on machine %Machine name% for user %username% has expired.

Also, on the connection server, the logs show this message:  "Client does not support idle session handling.  Desktop SSO times out in: Never. Application SSO Times out in: Never.”

I originally thought it was the SSO timer since that was set to 15 minutes, so I changed it to NEVER and the warning still shows up for these same 30 users.  The users experiencing the issue are using Teradici Zero Clients firmware version 4.8.0.

Also, this is happening in different pools so it is not pool specific.  Has anyone experienced this with the new Horizon View 7.0.1?  Could this possibly be a bug since no one is experiencing login issues?

Thanks

vMware Horizon Client

A third party is hosting our desktop environment with VMware Horizon 6.x

We have about 450 HP T620 stand alone Thin Clients with vMware Horizon client 3.5

Users get access to their VDI based on groups.

We have a group Everyone , and this group is member of the VDI light group in Active Directory. So every user has the VDI light icon in their Horizon Client.

The VDI's in the VDI light group has 2 GB mem, and 1 CPU.

But some users need more resources. So we created a VDI standard group. Users that need more resources are member of this group based on username.

But the user in de VDI standard group is also member of the everyone group that is member of the VDI light group.

Those users get 2 icons in their horizon client, and that is confusing for some users

Is it possible to configure or script something on the Horizon server, so that the users that are member of the VDI standard group, to see only the VDI standard icon, although they are also member of the Everone group, that is member of the VDI light group?

Thanks

Horizon client SSL error

I'm using Horizon Client, 3.3.0 build-2507564, and getting an SSL error when attempting a CAC login to the target site.  I am presented the banner, prompted for my certificate, prompted for my PIN, and then I get this error after putting in my PIN:

Error: An SSL error occurred

I have the SSL setting set to "Warn before connecting to untrusted servers", but I get no such warning.  I've tried all three configuration options for this SSL setting but none seems to resolve the issue.  It doesn't appear to be a certificate/security issue.  Other folks using the same version of Horizon client and using CAC authentication are not having this issue.  I've tried reinstalling ActivClient which hasn't helped either.

Any ideas?

Fault Tolerance for VDI with Security Servers and Connection Servers

Hello All,

I understand the different redundancy options available for hitting Security Servers.  That being said, does anyone have any suggestions for providing redundancy from the Security Server to the Connection Server.  Any solution I put in place to provide redundancy to the Security Servers will fail if that Security Server's paired Connection Server is down.

Thanks

Chrome OS Client 4, USB redirection?

I see this listed as one of the new features of Horizon 7 when used with the new ChromeOS 4.0 client

"Possibility to access Google drive and USB storage in remote apps and desktops with client drive redirection"

Does this mean that when a user with a Chromebook connects to a Windows desktop and plugs a flash drive into the Chromebook, this flash drive will be available in the Windows session?

Horizon View 6 - Persona Management - Folder Redirection and Roaming & Synchronization

$

I'm having a quirky issue with the PMView.  This is what I see:

- Log as test user with Horizon View client (1st time)

- View Desktop loads Windows, and shows desktop (30-45 seconds)

(During this step, I see the profile and redirected folders are created correctly)

- Log off test user

- Log back in with the same test user (2nd time)

- View Desktop loads Windows, shows the "Welcome" screen, and then a black screen.

(During this step, I see the profile repository get "recreated" (i.e., the folders/files get deleted, and then recreated...))

- After 1-2 minutes later, the desktop shows up

This seems like an odd behavior to me, and it's probably related to how I've created my PMview.

This is what I have:

VMware View 6.2.2 Linux Desktop (CentOS 6.7) No Sound Issue

Hi,

This is the setup...

VMware Horizon View 6.2.2 build-3508079

VMware View Client: 3.4.0

Linux Desktop OS: CentOS 6.7 64-bit

Scenario

Linux desktops are configured to mount an NFS dastore upon boot.

NFS Server configuration

  • CentoOS 6.7
  • Joined to the domain using Centrify
  • /etc/exports/

        profiles 10.64.0.0/24(rw,no_root_squash,sync,no_subtree_check,fsid=10)

  • NFS folder: /profiles (permissions 755)

NFS Client configuration (Linux Desktops)

  • CentOS 6.7
  • Joined to the domain using Centrify
  • Mount Point: /profiles (permissions 700)
  • After mounting: /profiles (permissions read 755 nobody nobody)
  • /ets/fstab

        10.64.0.8:/profiles     /profiles               nfs     defaults,_netdev        0 0

Centrify

I am using Centrify to join systems to the domain. I configured the Centrify agent to use the NFS mount (/profiles) for all AD user home directories.

Whenever I log in, I am am able to create a home directory on the NFS mount fine. I can save files, change desktop settings and upon future logins, I am able to retain

the user experience. I don't see any problems reading/writing files under the user's context. I notice that the speaker icon in the top corner will not appear. I go to

System --> Preferences --> Sound, and I get a window saying "Waiting for sound system to respond." This is what I see in /var/log/message:

    Sep  2 14:53:29 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12578]: core-util.c: Home directory /profiles/User1 not ours.

    Sep  2 14:53:29 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12578]: lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.

    Sep  2 14:53:29 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12578]: main.c: Failed to acquire autospawn lock

    Sep  2 14:53:32 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12643]: core-util.c: Home directory /profiles/User1 not ours.

    Sep  2 14:53:32 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12643]: lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.

    Sep  2 14:53:32 lnx-01 pulseaudio[12643]: main.c: Failed to acquire autospawn lock

When I log in with a LOCAL or AD account configured to use the local /home directory that lives on the local disk, I am able to see the

sound icon in the top right corner, and sound works fine. I do not see the "pulseaudio" entries as I do when logging in with a user that

has their home directory on the NFS mount. This sound issue only exists when users' home directories are located on the NFS mount.

Windows 10 sysprep - Guest customization is already pending

I have a windows 10 golden image that I have converted to a template and am provisioning a desktop pool using this and a vCenter customisation specification.  It clones the machine ok, but then fails with the error 'Guest customization is already pending'.  It does not create any logs on the VM and the sysprep file is not copied into the panther folder.  I THINK that I have run sysprep on this machine once and am wondering if this is causing the issues. If i create a snapshot and use Quickprep it is fine.  Has anyone else had this issue and knwo how to fix it?  It is looking like I may need to recreate my Golden Image otherwise :-(

strange problem with permissions and entitlements on Horizon 7

$

This is a strange problem.

i have added three users to entitlements on 2 View VMs.  I can access the VM, but other users cannot.

All firewall ports are open because my account can access the VMs.

However, the two other users cannot.

This is not my first rodeo, so this is not a dumb mistake on my part.

Is this a bug?
