VDI VMWare View clients on laptops connected to the AD domain - change user password

$

Hi,

We have rollout some VDI clients on laptops which are joined to our AD domain. Users who works from remote locations are using two factor authentication (AD domain credentials and SMS password).

Since that time, users stopped using the VPN connection on their laptops and we can see some issues related with this:

  • First when the user's password expires, the user is able to change it in AD over the VDI but it is not in sync with the user laptop.
  • When the user password expires, the password change is not possible because the user will not receive an SMS after authenticating with an old password.
  • Second when the laptop is not connected to our network all group policies are not refreshed and finally computer account expires in AD. Also we cannot apply new settings to those clients.

I am curious, what you would suggest in this scenario to handle laptops and provide users great experience?

  1. Should we still encourage users to use the VPN from time to time and keep the VPN servers
  2. Should we cancel the VPN, unjoin all laptops from the domain and use SCCM agent for a remote management (I guess MS Intune would be in scope or maybe I miss something?)
  3. Maybe there is an option or functionality within VM Ware Horizon View client which can synchronize the GPO to the local PC during the VDI session which I am not aware of?

I would appreciate any input.

Session Broker Not Registering Connections

$

Hi,

Our View setup has Windows 7 Professional desktops connected to an Active Directory domain (Windows Server 2008 R2) which uses a cross-realm trust with another non-Windows kerberos domain/realm. Prior to an upgrade to View 6.x, all sessions were visible in the View console courtesy of the broker. Post-upgrade this is not happening. Only proper-domain user's sessions are registered by the broker, and visible in the View control panel. Cross-realm kerberos users are not shown, or even registered by the broker. View (the broker) is handing out desktops that already have a user session active, but unregistered. As a result, users often get a "this pool currently has no more resources available" message. They can retry the connection, and it will usually work, but that is very confusing for users. None of this was an issue in View 5.3.x. Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks

Hi all,

I'm trying to find out when users log onto their View desktops.

Is there any way to get this information from the View environment?

Thanks,

James.

Cannot login to desktops.

Hi all,

When users are connected to View desktop it displays a black screen & then it exits back to the login screen

Event log shows that it is unable to launch from the pool and it gives the user id & shows that the VM is not ready

Error message on view server - "the pending session has expired" ,no error message on the end users system.

We recently upgraded ESXi and this has happened since.

Thanks,

Deploying WIndows 10 Proof of Concept - Guest Customization Does Nothing - PLEASE HELP!!!

$

Hi Everyone,

I have come here in desperate need of help.

I am setting up a Proof of Concept for ESX 6 /w Horizon View 6.2

I have the basic system up and running. I have the Desktop pool created for a Windows 10 Deployment (Full VM's not Linked-Clones).

For my test I have taken a raw WIndows 10 Installation and I have installed VMtools and View Agent then created a Template of it used for deployment.

Right now other then the fact that sometimes the VM when it is created it gets stuck on customization (still working out details as to how I can get it fully prepared and made "available" once created... I thought if you had agent installed and VMtools installed this is all that was required) but anyways the MAIN issue I have was that all VM's generated had the same Computer name so it sent our company DC's into a frenzy shifting VM's all over the company looking for the next DC to handle the same name.

I started working with Guest Customization but nothing seems to work.

I tried making the customization by cloning my gold image so I could add the customization to it at that point and then template it for deployment. This did not seem to do anything (no name changes or domain join or anything). As far as I could tell nothing worked.

Next I tried to make the customization in vCenter and then apply it to each VM created in View as they are generated (Using the guest customization option when creating the Desktop Pool). This produced the same results... no name changes or joining the domain...

I am using both Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise (Evaluations) for testing on both of these configurations.

I had read that Windows 10 has a problem As stated here: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026556

I set it to disable the activation in the hopes that the customization would work. Still nothing works.

Do I need to sysprep it for Guest Customization to work (Is this a requirement)?

I hope all you VMware guru's can help me. This is my first experience with using Horizon View and I have been tasked with transitioning the company to this system in coming months.

What am I overlooking... what am I doing wrong? I would appreciate any information you guys can provide in assisting me otherwise I might need to go to VMware directly for these issues (Since I am int he process of lining up all our licensing with them on this product but I can not even show the system fully working yet). Please load me up with details so I can get my head around this.

Thank You!

VMware Horizon 6.1 and Microsoft One drive for Business Sync

One of my clients requires to have Onedrive for Business in a View environment with linked clones. I read about the Onedrive for Business sync client and apparently you can not specify/change the location of the download location.

The customer demands that the Onedrive for Business client is installed and will sync/download the content from Onedrive, but in a linked clone environment this might mean that the sync client will download all content of Onedrive each time a user logs on to a dekstop, which we obviously do not want.

I told the customer that he potentially will have to store 1 TB of data per user in his datacenter, meaning he will need a lot of SAN space, but the customer does not care about this.

Does anybody have any experience with the Onedrive for business sync client in a Linked clone View environment and how to best set this up?

How can I clear the history of Horizon Vew Connection?

Hi all, I need your help.

We would like to clear the connection server history whenever Horizon Client boot up.

Because many user connect their own dedicated vPC through several connection servers on the one Physical PC (Windows ToGo).

So we don't want to show other user's history that is annoying and make confusion.

I googled on it, but I couldn't find any idea.

But I found following KB that indicates how to clear the history from vSphere Client.

I hope Horizon Client have same solution like this.

Removing recent connections from the vSphere Client vSphere Client IP address/ Name dropdown (1032988)

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1032988

Could you please give me your advice?

I appriciate any idea.

Thank you in advance.

VDI Linked clone VM's maintenance operations happens frequently on all VM's after 1 hour of their deployment

$

Hi,

Here is what i am experiencing. My plan was to deploy 100 linked clone windows VM's deployed using horizon view 6.2. As part of that view could deploy 20 VM's at a time and gradually reaches to 100 VM's. But after 1 Hour of deployment, few VM's automatically gets powered OFF and Power ON and  and from then onwards for every 10 mins they get Powered ON and PowerOFF and automatically some reconfiguration operations will be kicked on those VM's.

Also,I observed that view deletes few VM's after doing above operations and create again VM's with same name of the VM's that were deleted.

What could be the reason for such a behaviour.Am I missing anything from the configuration side. As part of testing,I couldn't install View Agent on my Template VM and didnt assign/entitle users to View Desktops. In addition to this,I configured Blackout Time as everyday from 00:00 to 23:59 and still see that some operations runnig on my VM's as per mentioned above.

What would be the cause of this behaviour of unexpected PowerOFF/PowerON/Reconfig/Delete/Create of Linked Clone VM's.

-Thanks,

Need help for setting up testcases for VMWare View (Performance testing for high end graphics)

Hi all,

Greeting.

I need help regarding setting up test cases for checking performance of high end graphics applications. I already have all the back-end applications installed and configured with evaluations licenses, now I am planning testing applications in my environment and if this going perfect then I will go for buying this product.

I have below setup: (Please correct me if anything is wrong)

1. View Connection Server - For managing user and machine management

2. View Composer Server - For creation of multiple machines (Currently I am not using this due to some dependencies)

3. VCenter Server - For creation of machines

4. VRealize Operations Manager - For monitoring purpose

Also on my esx 6.0 server I have Nvidia K2 (8GB Graphics) installed and configured for VM's.

Applications being used and to be tested, require minimum 2GB of graphics and 32 GB memory (As per desktop configuration where these applications are currently used).

I want to set up test cases so that I can verify the performance is up to mark and in future if I buy this product then all users can use it perfectly and WITHOUT LAG. I already have test cases for backend functions/support view (VM Test plan Req). Now I want to test things from user side.

RTAV in View Client 3.5 drops audio when resolution is set to 640x480

Hi all,

I have a very curious RTAV audio issue. We have a ticket open with VMware but I'm using all available knowledge resources.

Here goes:

My company uses a product called Vidyo for teleconferencing. We also mostly use HP Thin Client T620s running a linux ThinOS with View Client 3.5.0 (latest possible build from HP). We are also using View 6.2.

When we run Vidyo with a webcam or usb headset via RTAV everything works great (audio and video) until we bump up the resolution 640x480 in the RTAV group policy settings. Once this occurs, the audio craps out. View Agent debug logs show lots and lots of audio problems, but they don't look familiar to me. Could this be a bug? I should note this issue does NOT occur from a laptop or desktop (Mac or Windows) running the View Client.

So I'm left to wager that it's either the Thin Client OR the linux View Client build that is wonky.

I should also note that PCoIP logs show no loss or dropped packets and perfmon shows pretty stable PCoIP session stats inside the Windows OS on the View desktop VM. Any thoughts or ideas on this? Thanks in advance!

Horizon View 6 - Persona Management - Folder Redirection and Roaming & Synchronization

I'm having a quirky issue with the PMView.  This is what I see:

- Log as test user with Horizon View client (1st time)

- View Desktop loads Windows, and shows desktop (30-45 seconds)

(During this step, I see the profile and redirected folders are created correctly)

- Log off test user

- Log back in with the same test user (2nd time)

- View Desktop loads Windows, shows the "Welcome" screen, and then a black screen.

(During this step, I see the profile repository get "recreated" (i.e., the folders/files get deleted, and then recreated...))

- After 1-2 minutes later, the desktop shows up

This seems like an odd behavior to me, and it's probably related to how I've created my PMview.

This is what I have:

Horizon 6.2 ThinPrint Redirection behavior change breaks certain PDF printers or XPS Document Writer

$
0
0

To all,

I have an Horizon 6.2 deployment on one of our environments, and lately have seen issues due to change in ThinPrint redirection behavior. Prior to 6.2, printers that were redirected from the local client via ThinPrint were appended with :1, :2, and so forth to prevent conflicts with the printers that are installed on the virtual desktop. However, starting from version 6.2, ThinPrint will redirect the local client's printers to the virtual desktop with the exact name specified in the printer object. This has caused numerous issues on our end, mainly related to PDF printer driver (Bullzip PDF, ABS PDF printer from QuickBooks, XPS Document Writer):

1. For QuickBooks print to pdf function to work, both ABS PDF printer object and XPS Document Writer object must be installed for it to work. However, when a user connects to the virtual desktop with a client that has QuickBooks installed locally on their client desktop, ThinPrint will overwrite those printer objects with the redirected one, which will cause those printers to cease to function correctly since ThinPrint redirection does not support file-based printers. When user logs off, ThinPrint will delete those printer objects permanently, which will require a reinstall of those printer objects on the virtual desktop, even for non-persistent desktops if user data is persisted (e.g. Writable Volumes UIA+Profile from App Volumes).

2. Similarly, if the user has PDF printer (e.g. Bullzip) installed, or XPS Document Writer installed (which is installed by default on every Windows 7/8/8.1/10 desktop), on their client machine, and attempts to connect to the virtual desktop that has the same Bullzip/XPS Document Writer installed, ThinPrint redirection component will delete the Bullzip/XPS object, requiring a re-install of those printer objects. Since QuickBooks PDF printer requires XPS Document Writer to function, this also breaks the QuickBooks PDF printing functionality.

This has caused a fair amount of headache from us, and I would like to know if we can revert the ThinPrint redirection behavior back to the prior release. I really don't want to disable ThinPrint altogether as certain users want the ability to print from their home printer. Plus, the KB article on disabling ThinPrint (https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1031688, https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2012770, https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2003626) from the client side does not work at all.

Orphaned Replica

After a failed attempt to add a new Automated Floating (Linked Cloned) Desktop pool I had to manually delete the Desktop pool. I removed all desktops from the ADAM database, Vcenter, and Active directory.  I had to connect to the host directly with vsphere to delete the replica. Of course now in the my vcenter the vm is orphaned.

I ran the following command, replacing VMName with the replica name.

SviConfig -operation=RemoveSviClone -VmName=VMname -AdminUser=TheLocalAdminUser -AdminPassword=TheLocalAdminPassword -ServerUrl=TheViewComposerServerURL

The cmd returned with "SviConfig finished with an error. Exit code: 23 VM name is not found in the database"

Agent Version - 6.1.0 2509441

Please help

Bug in EUC Access Point? Log out redirects to internal address.

I implemented the EUC Access Point and I have 1 issue. When a user logs in to the Webportal through the EUC Access Point, but doesn't connect to a desktop session and immediately selects log out on that interface, it redirects to the internal address of the connection server: https://<internal ip of connection server>/portal. Is this a bug? Anyone else experiences this? I used the VMware Access Point Deployment Utility to deploy the Access Point and everything else is working. When a user does log in to a desktop session and then logs out, it redirects to the correct url.
