vSGA / vDGA Hybrid Configuration

$

Hi there,

I'm dealing with a customer who wants to provide hardware acceleration to both Windows and Linux desktops from a single server with a single graphics card. My immediate suggestion was that we use the latest Tesla M60 to run everything in a vGPU configuration which, assuming a compatible Linux distro, will be able to provide acceleration to both flavours of operating system.

However, a more cost effective solution might be to install an older GRID K1 card in to the unit, and using the vDGA for Linux desktops features (present since 6.1 I believe) I could pass through a GPU directly in to each Linux desktop. However, lets say for example I have 4 Windows desktops and 2 Linux desktops on a server. The K1 card has 4 GPUs, so could I pass through 2 of the GPUs in to the 2 Linux desktops, and then share the other 2 GPUs between the 4 Windows GPUs in a vSGA configuration?

I guess in summary my question is - if I install the vSGA software VIB driver in to the ESXi host, will I still be able to do PCI pass through on the card, or will the hypervisor remove those devices from the list of available ones?

Many thanks in advance.

Migrating Persona directories while retaining permissions

I am attempting to upgrade VDI login time by moving persona directories to a faster storage device, but I am unable to migrate the user directories and retain their proper ownership.  Is someone who has successfully done this willing to educate me on their process?

Should I use a seperate Virtual Center for my View Horizon 6 deployment?

I'm in a position where I am starting off fresh with a new View deployment.  New hardware, newest version, etc.  Should I have a separate Virtual Center server dedicated to View?  We have a dedicated one for our old v5 environment and I found it cumbersome to manage a separate VC.  What would be the benefits of having a dedicated VC?

Smart card authentication. Set default certificate/ select certificate automatically?

Hi all,

I've recently successfully created a horizon view 6 setup, using smart card to authenticate to the View Connection Server from the View client.

During the authentication, the Horizon client shows that the card contains 2 certificates. 1 of them we clicked and it logs in to the connection server and displays the desktop pool successfully, while the other cert says that no users are available for the desktop pool.

Is there a way to set the default selection of the cert, or to make the view client choose whatever cert that has a user available for the pool, automatically? So that the users do not have to wonder which cert is the correct one when logging in.

Cloud Pods and Persona Mgmt Profiles

Hey,

Hypothetical design question:

- 2 datacenters in different continents, 70ms RTT, 1Gb Bandwidth, MPLS.

- A view pod in each datacenter, linked using Cloud Pod Architecture and F5 GTM

- Floating desktop pools in each datacenter

I'd like an active-active design with policies to set a preferred datacenter for each user based on geography and lowest latency.  If the pod was unavailable, or if there was an unplanned outage, then redirect the user over to the surviving datacenter.

I know all this should be possible, but what about retaining the user's profile?  Assuming the persona management profiles are stored on a CIFS share local to each view pod, what would be a supported way of keeping them in sync between datacenters?  It ideally would need to be active/active and r/w on both sides.

Maybe DFS-R ?  Although I think there are support concerns around using this for user profiles.

Something like Snapmirror would be ideal, it's array based and block level, but doesn't provide active/active access.

Any ideas or suggestions?

cannot get a post sync script to run post linked clone provision.

I have been banging my head against this particular brick for nearly 4 days now,  We need to get the Liquidware Labs Stratusphere UX agent working in the deployed linked clones.

This is a synopsis of what as been done so far:

Snap shot taken of Gold image.

Connector ID agent installed to Image, and confirmed that the agent is talking to the hub.

VMwareView_MasterImagePrep.bat file run to remove the "crt" file from the agent directroy structure and stop and change the LWL Stratusphere services to manual.

This is the script that LWL provide:

@echo off

: disable auto start of Liquidware Labs services

cd /d %~dp0

set checkpoint="tntgrd"

sc config "tntgrd" start= demand

if %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 (

   goto error

)

set checkpoint="tntuidsvc"

sc config "tntuidsvc" start= demand

if %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 (

   goto error

)

set checkpoint="tntupdsvc"

sc config "tntupdsvc" start= demand

if %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 (

   goto error

)

: clean driver

set checkpoint="idcontrol"

"%CD%\..\idcontrol.exe" clean

if %ERRORLEVEL% NEQ 0 (

   goto error

)

echo Done!

goto done

:error

   echo Error level: %ERRORLEVEL%. Failed to configure %checkpoint%.

   echo Make sure you run this batch file as administrator.

:done

   pause

   exit

The following files are placed in a newly created directory called scripts at the root of the C: drive.

VMWareView_PostSyncScript.bat

VMwareView_PostSync-Worker.bat.

The first file moves to the working folder and then calls the second batch.

@REM VMWareView Composer sometimes only runs the first line in the post sync script

@REM Use a worker batch file to work around this issue.

cd /d %~dp0

cmd.exe /c VMWareView_PostSyncScript-Worker.bat

This script has been modified to read as below to simplify the helper script:

cd /script

cmd.exe /c VMWareView_PostSyncScript-Worker.bat

The second batch file changes the services to auto and starts them.

@REM VMWare Views Composer sometimes only runs the first line in the post sync script.

@REM We work around this by using a proxy batch file that just calls this one

@echo Configuring CID Key services to start automatically...

@sc config "tntgrd" start= auto

@sc config "tntuidsvc" start= auto

@sc config "tntupdsvc" start= auto

@sc start tntgrd

@sc start tntuidsvc

@sc start tntupdsvc

@echo Completed!

@echo Please verify services are in Running state

There was no customization to this script.

IPconfig /release was then run to remove the IP Address from the Gold Master and a further snapshot was taken.  The pool is then edited to add a Post Sync file to enable the services post provisioning.

I have tried the following different methods to call the script

c:\scripts\VMWareView_PostSysncScript.bat

call /c c:\scripts\VMWareView_PostSysncScript.bat

start c:\scripts\VMWareView_PostSysncScript.bat

I have even attempted to use psexec

psexec -hsi cmd.exe /c c:\scripts\VMwareView_PostSyncScript.bat

However when rebalancing,  we always receive the following error:

View Composer agent initialization state error (19): Failed to execute postsync script (waited 0 seconds)

When checking the %system_drive%\Windows\Temp\vmware-viewcomposer-ga-new.log file, we see the following in there:

2016-01-22 15:53:52,245 [1420] INFO  Ready  -  [Ready.cpp, 128] Running the PostSync script: "start" C:\script\VMwareView_PostSyncScript.bat with timeout: 20000

Which seems to indicate that the file cannot be found, however when visually  checking the VM guest, we can plainly see the files in the correct location.

Manually running the files correctly run the scripts and adds the machine to the Stratusphere Hub inventory. so communications between the guest and the hub is not a factor.

Windows updates on vCenter + co-installed composer

Just a quick one regarding best practices for updating windows OS on a vCentre server with co-installed composer and databases.

I've just set my persistent linked clone pools to auto-refresh on log out, and am just wondering how others go about installing MS updates and scheduling subsequent reboots on the vCentre server.  Do you disable the pools before installing and rebooting the server or maybe schedule an out of hours restart?

Thanks in advance....

Horizon deleted files returning

I have a dedicated pool, Horizon 6.2, with a persistent disk to D:.  When the user deletes a file from their desktop the file returns after logging off and back on.

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 11.00.30 AM.png

Notice the "x" on the file icon.  These are on the files that have been deleted by the user.

I've refreshed the pool and restarted the machine and the files are still there.

Any thoughts on why the files are not deleting?

SQL upgrade? Upgrading vSphere 5.1 and View 5.3.4 to vCenter 6.0u1 and Horizon 6.2.1

$

Looking at the interoperability matrix for the databases.  And it appears the version of SQL we are running at our organization isn't supported/interoperable with the latest version of the VMware product we want to upgrade to.  Has anyone found this to be an issue?  I'm hoping we can still do an in-place upgrade for all these products without an issues.   Here's what we have.

vCenter on WIndows - 5.1 (947673)

Composer standalone - 5.3.4

Connection Server (2) - 5.3.4

MS SQL standard - 2008 R2 SP1 x64

Where we'd like to be

vCenter on Windows - 6.1u2

Composer - 6.2.1

Connection Server (2) - 6.2.1

MS SQL Standard - 2008 R2 SP3 x64 (in order to be compatible with new versions of both vCenter and View)

Has anyone had a similar upgrade path?  How do you suggest upgrading SQL in this scenario?

Thanks in Advance.

Horizon View Licensing Constraints

$

Hi,

I've been asked to pose a question about the limitations of View licensing by our desktop team and what they are allowed to run. Currently we have the following licences:

vCenter Server

vCenter Server 6 Standard for Horizon

View Connection Server

Horizon 6 View Standard

ESXi Hosts

vSphere 6 for Desktop

They run a Horizon View environment with VDI desktops running Windows 7 on a cluster of ESXi blades.

They would like to add a new ESXi cluster on which to run Windows 7 VMs that are not part of Horizon View / VDI, under the same vCenter instance. The purpose of these VMs is to test packaging apps for SCCM.

My understanding is that this is not permitted and they would require a separate vCenter instance to manage this ESXi cluster and VMs. We have spare Enterprise Plus licences, which could be assigned to the new ESXi cluster, but I suspect that it would still not be permitted to run under the "vCenter Server 6 Standard for Horizon" vCenter instance.

Can anyone clarify on the issue? I've been unable to find the official wording from VMware on what is/isn't permitted.

Thank you.

Highest PCoIP transmit mbps possible?

$

I've been experimenting with a brand-new ESXi server that IT is testing, with various View clients as well as zero-clients like the 10ZiG V1200-QP. The 10ZiG in particular is hooked up to four 1920x1200 monitors, rotated into portrait orientation because it works better for me as a developer.

We actually have two ESXi servers, one with a K1 and the other with a K2 GRID card. But right now we're just testing bog-standard Windows 7 Office 2010 applications (Excel in particular), video, Chrome browsing, etc. In fact, I've had IT deactivate the GRID cards in my VM as they were causing some issues with monitor detection. Also, at home I have a 4K monitor that the GRID outright doesn't support.

I've been wrestling with IT trying to convince them that PCoIP performance should allow for at least smooth 1080p video playback (YouTube, say) and Excel scrolling at 30 fps. But right now all we seem to have achieved with View 6.1.1 is 24-30 fps for a single 1080p video in Chrome. Opening two such videos causes the fps to drop by half (15 fps each).

Even worse, Excel scrolling across four monitors is in the low single-digit fps. Our five-year-old desktops can easily run four 1080p videos while scrolling the same Excel session at butter-smooth frames per second.

Despite the server being on gigabit Ethernet (soon-to-be 10gbe though) and there only being three VMs currently set up on the ESXi server -- with only myself running full-time with 8 vCPU = 8 physical cores -- I can only ever push PCoIP TX transmit rate to about 125 mbps. Moreover, the pcoip_win32_server.exe process never exceeds 1/8 = 13-15%, i.e. "single-threaded" on my 8-vCPU VM. After a bit of kerfuffle when we first set up the ESXi server, we no longer see PCoIP packet loss.

Is this the sort of maximum performance one expects out of a bleeding-edge ESXi setup? We're not the typical VDI customer in the sense that we genuinely will dedicate at least eight vCPU to each user with no over-provisioning, 16GB+ of RAM, etc. We were trying to see whether this could replace powerful desktops at least in terms of native responsiveness in Office applications and YouTube 1080p video, but so far this is falling dramatically short.

Am I being crazy to think a top-end ESXi setup couldn't replace a multi-monitor desktop?

Horizon View Access Point Server

I deployed a Horizon View Access Point Appliance for a customer, to be used as their Security Server. Everything is working great from outside the network, but from inside the network, they cannot connect using PCOIP.

External users hit the DNS "vdi.domain.com", and internal users hit "vdi.domain.com", but the internal DNS servers point that DNS name to the internal IP of the access point.

I believe when hitting the access point (internally or externally), it tries to route users from outside and then back in. There is probably a NAT issue which is why internal users cannot connect.

But the larger question is, how do I keep internal users' traffic, internal? Customer has an EPL link between all of their sites, so it makes no sense to have their traffic go over the internet. How do I keep that internal while still allowing outside users access? I can have internal users connect straight to the connection server, but that is annoying for them to have to have two different links to choose from in the VDI client. (The Access Point and Connection Server).

What am I missing? Here is the settings for edgeservice of the access point. (I masked customer info)

View Security Server with Smartcard Auth

Guys I am at a bit of a stand still with my Horizon 6 deployment and i am hoping to get some assistance.  I have a connection server running on the 10.0.244.x network, works fine with smart card authentication.  I have a security server in the DMZ, that will connect to the connection server over the allowed ports and that seems fine.  However, i cannot connect to the security server (which is on the 172.14.x.x network just for reference) via smart card.  I just get the error "Smart card authentication is required."  I am forcing smart card authentication so the error is not incorrect, but i cannot figure out what is keeping the security server from passing smart card credentials to the connection server.  I am cutting and pasting log snippets below to help hopefully:

Can VMWare handle 30fps for four-monitor Excel scrolling?

$

We've been told recently by VMWare that we cannot expect to see anything close to native desktop performance for Windows 7 VMs across more than two monitors. I was stunned to hear this, so I've been thinking of easy ways for the community at large to test this.

Here it is! For those fortunate enough to be running at least two monitors, try this:

1. Start up Excel (2010 or above), and manually expand the window across 2+ monitors.

2. Fill every visible cell and at least a few hundred more rows down with the formula "=RAND()". Remove the double quotes when pasting into Excel. This fills the sheet with a bunch of floating point numbers which I've found is by far the hardest kind of spreadsheet for PCoIP to scroll.

3. Try scrolling down and seeing if the scrolling is smooth.

For four 1920x1200 monitors, we can only ever achieve low single-digit frames per second and the screens are totally out-of-sync: one monitor will move down a row, then some other monitor, etc. The only real difference after installing an APEX 2800 offload card is that the screens are a bit more in sync.

Even with just three monitors the frame rate is grossly slow, in the 6-10 fps range. Only over two monitors do I achieve kinda/sorta smooth performance at around 18 fps.

This is the case regardless of whether we are using our V1200QP zero clients or a full-blown high-end desktop running the View client. All machines are cabled with gigabit Ethernet.

Anybody running at least three monitors get better results then we do?

Snap of parent VM not present for recompose?

$

I have a Horizon View 6.1 auto, dedicated pool of linked clones I am using to attempt a demo of AppVolumes. As part of the POC, I wanted to see what updating the guest on the parent VM and pushing it out to the clones looks like. To build the pool, I created a new VM, took a snap, and assigned this VM as parent, with the snap as the image for the pool. I then ran updates on the guest, and took a second snap. When attempting to recompose either the entire pool, or an individual (logged out) assigned machine from the pool, the recompose dialog only gives the image snap as an option. There is no error, but the new snap is not available as a snap to recompose to.

Am I missing something fundamental in how this process works/is my pool configured incorrectly to use recompose in this way?

I do not see anything that stands out in my setup when following the linked clone bp from Documentation Center for Horizon 6 version 6.1

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance for taking a look!

No access to persistent desktop

I have a pool of persistent desktops for software developers. Two of the machines started having issues after an attempted upgrade to Visual Studio 2015, they interrupted an uninstall of VS2013 after the reboot both machines could not get a valid IP address and could not be accessed via the VI Client console, the web client console or the VMware remote console application. when windows was running. I could see in to the VM bios when it booted and I even tried to start them up in safe mode where I can see the part of the load but when windows starts to get its legs the console is locked out.

Some details:

ESX 6.0.0.324770

Vmware Horizon View 6.2

VM Version 11

OS: Win7 64bit

SCSI controller is Paravirtual

The network adapter is the VMXnet3

Vmware tools - current

The .vmx file is not locked

Horizon View 3.5.0 and ThinApp v4.7 with Cisco ASA Smart Tunnel 9.3.3

Hello,

The problem:

Our smart tunnel tech does not appear to be forwarding traffic from our new view client.  I am wondering what kind of configuration changes should be considered to enable such a connection.  The error returned when searching for hostname is along the lines of hostname not found.  The error when searching for IP is related to timeout.

Background info and specs:

We are in the process of upgrading our View Connection Servers from 5.2 to 6.2.  As a part of the upgrade we want to upgrade our Horizon View clients to use version 3.5.0.  To make it easier on vendors and remote PCs we also prefer to ThinApp our Horizon View Client with ThinApp 4.7.3.  We currently have a Cisco ASA supporting a SSL VPN Portal with "Smart Tunnel" technology.  The ASA is currently on firmware 9.3.3 in production but we have access to version 9.5 in test.

Preferred connection scenario:

User > PC > VMware View Client (ThinApp'd) > Cisco ASA Smart Tunnel > View Connection Server > Virtual Desktop

.exes running from the ThinApp view client:

It seems the ThinApp version of the View Client is only launching VMware-view.exe.

.exes running from the full/thick view client:

- VMware-view.exe

- ftnlsv.exe

- vmwsprrdpwks.exe

- ftscanmgr.exe

Is there anything else to consider when configuring either the thick or ThinApp view client to work with the Cisco SSL VPN Portal and Smart Tunnel?  We should have ports configured in the firewall as connecting with the same view client does work with the port forwarder feature of the SSL VPN Portal.
