View 6 with NVIDIA GRID K1 - VSGA Performance Instability

$

Hello all, I have the following equipment set up on View 6 for a POC to test vSGA and vDGA:

Dell R720

NVIDIA GRID K1

128 GIG of RAM

Dedicated Pool with Hardware rendering and max 512 mb of VRAM

The VDGA works flawless and we are using the Microsoft HTML5 Fishbowl test and Helloracer WEBGL.

When using the VSGA pool, if we connect via a Windows View Client at 1280x720p or so, the tests work fine. If we connect at 1920x1080, we have to run the graphics tests in a small window or the performance goes in the toilet. It's almost like soft and hard rendered switch off and on, even though we've hard set the rendering setting. We have been monitoring the usage of the GPUs via nvidia-smi but when we have a large browser window, the performance dives but the GPU is only hovering around 11-20%

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Issues with audio/video streaming with USB devices on zero clients

Hello:
We are using View 6.1.1 in our environment and having issues getting audio/video streaming to work well with USB headsets, with zero clients.  The headsets are Jabra Link 360 and the zero clients are Samsung NC241.  The headsets are used both for phones in Jabber, and also as the default audio device.   We started by using the Teradici audio driver and everything seemed to work well except that users could not answer calls on the headset itself with the button on the headset.  They were able to answer calls from within Windows however and that part worked fine.  In order to get the physical button working, we had to first bridge the USB receiver that they use on the zero clients so Windows would see it as the Jabra 360 device and not the Teradici audio device.  Then we had to enable EHCI mode for USB on them as well, and after that it started working fine.  However, the headsets are also used as the primary audio device as well as the communication device (phone), with audio streaming continuously throughout the day.  With the current setup, the audio streaming will cut in and out during the day, and audio/video is not always staying in sync either.

I have also applied the registry hack in this KB, VMware KB: Improving audio quality when using USB headsets or speakers with a VMware Horizon View 5.2 desktop , which helped clear up crackling that we initially had with the phone part of the headsets.  But the issue of audio streaming persists.

I am wondering if the efficiency of bridging USB is not as efficient, and also is there a way to make this work better?  I have read that using the Teradici driver is supposed to help with audio/video problems, but not sure how that may apply to USB devices like we are using.  I have been reading up on the audio/video Teradici settings, but am not sure where to go from there.  I was hoping that there were some best practices to using USB headsets with View, but so far I'm not finding anything helpful.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Windows lock screen - Data privacy

Hi everybody,

we are currently figuring out, how to configure an automatic lock screen (normal Windows lock screen) based on the endpoint device.

I know there are some view agent environment variables available.

We already tried setting screensaver settings based on conditions with VMware UEM.

But there are two main problems.

1. The variables aren't available yet during logon (ADMX Settings)

2. The changes first take effect after another logon (user environment refresh) which is too late.

I hope you guys have any ideas, how to implement a solution.

Any idea how to solve this?

manual desktop pool

Hi,

I'm trying to create a manual desktop pool in Horizon 6.1. I choose other sources because I don't want to use Vcenter.

I can't see any virtual machine to add to this manual pool, however, a virtual machine (Windows 7) is on an esxi with an horizon agent installed.

Is there something to do to add this virtual machine?

For information, I am able to create a manual desktop pool with one or more VM which are inside Vcenter. But I need to create a manual desktop pool without Vcenter...

Thank you for your help,

View 6: Minimum number of ready machines during Composer operations not working

View 6.0.2.  Recently upgraded, but no other issues so far.

I noticed when I issued a recompose (with wait for users to log off) during the middle of the day it started recomposing all of my desktops (except for those with users logged in).  It did not leave any desktops in the "Available" or "Provisioned" state.  The minimum number of ready (provisioned) machines during View Composer maintenance operations is set to 5 under my pool settings.

Has anyone else ran into this or can verify this happens to them as well?

Horzion View "Could not establish tunnel connection"

Recently enabled AD authentication on our proxy appliance which allows internet access for our domain users.

Domain Structure

Parent Domain - Users working.

Child Domain 1 - Users working.

Child Domain 2 - Users seeing intermittent issues.

Error messages as below:

"Error: A network error occured".

"Could not establish a tunnel connection".

download.png

Only pattern/workaround I can see is initially when the user attempts to connect to Horizon, they receive the above error messages.

If they then launch IE browser on the local PC and access a webpage, retry connection to Horizon now works successfully.

Appreciate if anyone could provide some suggestions as to what might be the cause, or if they have experienced similar.

Thanks,

VMWare View without Active Directory

Hey folks,

I have a Setup where View should be implemented, but there's no Active Directory in Place.

Instead all Windows Stuff libes in a Samba3 Domain, connected to an LDAP. Has anyone here ever seen getting this to work?

Idea1 is to establis a dummy AD Server and try to fill it with some creepy scripting stuff from the LDAP (shat stays productive) und use the 'real' Active Directory just for View.

Idea2 seems a bit more sophisticated, yet I've never seen it in Production: Build up a dummy ActiveDirectory and establis mutual trust to the Samba Doman (could this be working)

Any other Ideas? What about Smaba4? How much of ActiveDirectory is realy required for View?

Disable copy/paste

Hello,

I'm trying to find a way to disable or enable the "copy/paste" command depending on where a user connect from.  For example, if a user connect to View from outside the corporate network, copy/paste must be disable.  If a user connect to View from inside the corporate network, copy/paste must be enable.

How can I get to manage this kind of functionality?  Is it possible to manage this by executing a script when the virtual desktop boots up?  Should I create a master image for users from outside the network and an image for users from the inside?

Thank you.

View Composer DiskFault: Disk customization failed due to an internal error

There’s a glitch some customers are encountering  whereby a Linked Clone desktop is created on vCenter Ok, but is deleted soon after vCenter complains about either “disposable” or “internal” .vmdk files this desktop. Creating and recomposing linked clone desktops fails on VMware Horizon View 6.1.x and all older releases after you have applied an upgrade patch.

ThinPrint Failure

Hi,

Suddenly, I have no idea why, our VMs cannot print to their network printers. Each job comes up with an error, which describes absolutely nothing. Go Windows 7! The Event Log lists an error for each print attempt with the reason.

"Virtual channel initialized. No suitable client protocol found. No printers to be created in this session were found."

Each VM has a serial port, and the printers are mapped via a login script.

Any idea why this may be happening?

Thanks

Horizon View 6.0.1 Connection server certificate replacement

I installed the new VMware horizon View 6.0.1.

On the connection server normally you can replace the standard certificate with a custom certificate.

Normally the only thing we need to do is change the friendly name to vdm and restart the services.

I did this and when starting the VMware Horizon View Blast Secure Gateway service I get an error.

Windows could not start the VMware Horizon Blast Secure Gateway service on Local Computer.

In the absg.log I see following message: keystoreutil.exe failed to load certificate from  [ 'windows-local-machine', 'MY', 'vdm' ] 1 Failed to acquire private key handle (error 2148073492)

Has someone seen this before?

Going to vCenter 5.5u3b - Impact on Horizon View?

$

We are currently at 5.5u3a but need to upgrade to 5.5u3b. We are currently running Horizon View 5.3.4 for our VDI environment.

My question is will Horizon View have any issues with the 3b patch due to SSLv3 being disabled?

I checked the interoperability matrices and according to them every version of Horizon View from 5.3.3 to the current 6.2.1 is supported, however I've been burned by those matrices in the past being wrong. I would like to here some feed back from real world users.

We are planning on upgrading Horizon to 6.2.1 but not until after we are at 5.5u3b.Unfortunately our hardware is no longer supported in ESXi/vCenter 6 so we can't move our entire platform to 6.

Horizon client SSL error

I'm using Horizon Client, 3.3.0 build-2507564, and getting an SSL error when attempting a CAC login to the target site.  I am presented the banner, prompted for my certificate, prompted for my PIN, and then I get this error after putting in my PIN:

Error: An SSL error occurred

I have the SSL setting set to "Warn before connecting to untrusted servers", but I get no such warning.  I've tried all three configuration options for this SSL setting but none seems to resolve the issue.  It doesn't appear to be a certificate/security issue.  Other folks using the same version of Horizon client and using CAC authentication are not having this issue.  I've tried reinstalling ActivClient which hasn't helped either.

Any ideas?

Urgent Help!!! one of my client meets - "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections"

Dear all,

one of my staff said she could not connect her desktop vm22 and the view client said "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections". my view administrator displays that “the pending session on machine xx for user xxx has been expired” . but i then assigned another user to the same desktop, everything looks fine.

background:

1. I am using view 6.0.

2. This user used to assigned another desktop vm06. it took a long long time (more than 30 minutes) to login (agent set not delete local persona) , This Morning when she tried to connect(already logged in before, here just reconnect),  she got "there is no available gateway for this display protocol". So i assigned her to another desktop vm22

Is there something wrong with this user account or something else. Need your help!!! Thanks in advance!

View / VDI Availability Report (99% SLA)

$

Folks - how do you track your VDI/View availability?

We agreed to the business to have a 99% availability and from a connection server perspective this is true.

However the business wants to see the availability by each individual virtual desktop as we sometimes have issues with machines that are (agent-)unreachable until they are being reset.

What would be the best approach? Track if the view agent service is started? Track if its pingable?

Is there any kind of mechanism to check externally against a virtual desktop if its reachable by PCOIP/View Client?

They are all running 24/7 by the way. Since we had issues with the "suspend" power policy and patching we just "keep them powered on".

We are running on 6.0.1 brokers with 6.0.1 agents (vsphere 5.5u3) and have around 3000 full clones.

Thanks for any info.

Persona Management Breaks With Windows Essentials 2012 Installed

Horizon View 5.3.1

Windows 7 64-bit

After updating our parent images Persona Management would no longer work.  Windows would freeze up when you attempted to do several functions such as changing the background, creating a shortcut (sometimes), or logging off.  For profiles that already had a persona folder on the share, I didn't notice the issue.

Long story short we called VMware support and tested a lot of things.  Eventually it came down uninstalling software until the culprit was found.  Finally we determined the newly installed Windows Essentials 2012 was the cause.  The only piece of it we were installing was Movie Maker and photo software.  I tried just disabling the Windows Live Sign-In Assistance service and even tried deleting the service, but the problems persisted.

Just an FYI in case anybody else runs into this.  We haven't yet pursued a resolution as it isn't a critical piece of software for us.  That may change in the future depending on user requests.

User Desktop icons and Favorites revert back - Horizon View 6.2

$

Hi All,

We are using Persona Management for managing user profiles for our Automated Floating Desktop Pools. Users are entitled to multiple Desktop Pools and they login to one VDI session at one time logging off the other one. We're having a strange problem where user desktop icons revert back and the Favorites icon get duplicated if a user tries to delete or re-arrange them. I understand Persona Management does not currently support multiple concurrent sessions to the same profile and If more than one session is detected, it goes into a read-only mode, during which no changes are uploaded to the network. However, in our scenario users are logging off and then connecting to other desktop pool so there is only one session per user at any time. However, the changes they are making across those sessions are being merged and duplicated. I've made sure there's enough time between log off/on process so the profiles get synced across the network.

Has anyone faced this issue?

Any suggestion would be greatly Appreciated.

Thanks,

Loc.
