Issue with expired password accounts when logging into View externally

Hello,

We've recently started rolling out View to our users and it's gone pretty smoothly.  One issue we've recently encountered is when a user's Windows account password has expired and the attempt to log into View externally (via our Security server and a dedicated external connection server), they receive a message, "Access Denied".  If the same user attempts to log in internally against our internal dedicated connection server, they receive the expected message about the password being expired and are prompted to change it.  Any ideas as to what may be going on with the communication between and the security server and the connection server to cause this?  I'm about to dig into logs, but wanted to post here too in case others may have encountered the same thing.

Thanks,

Jake

Replace a host from backup

On a vsphere 5.5 with View 5.3, I want to replace a Host. I backup the host by vicfg-cfgbackup command line. I think to restore the configuration by the same utility on a new hardware.

The desktop on view point to single host and no to the cluster.

This is the right procedure or I must do something on view console?

Setting Windows visual effects for default user

I am setting up a master image to be used for VDI desktops. I need to tweak the Windows visual effects to improve screen update performance over slow connections. The settings I am talking about can be found Computer / Properties / Advanced system settings / Advanced / Performance settings / Visual Effects. For example, I want to disable "show window contents while dragging." The registry key is HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\DragFullWindows=0. Each checkbox on that screen has a corresponding registry value, I have found them all.

I figured, cool, all I need to do is load the settings I want into the default user registry so it is applied as new users are created. Not so, some of the settings carry though, but many get reset. My guess is that Windows sets some of those settings as the profile is created, based on the computer's performance index. I have verified the settings work, if I apply them to a specific user's profile they are all applied.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get this to work?  These are the full settings I am applying…

Remote View Desktop User: connect to Security Server through VPN or through internet?

$

Hello,

My users want to use View Desktop from internet for remote working. Should these users connect to VPN first then connect to Security Server, or let Security Server face the internet and users connect to Security Server directly?

Which way is considered best practice?

standlone machine within Horizon View

before I go on, I think that this can't be done. but I will ask away.

I have been asked to set up an isolated network within Horizon that has no external connections to the outside world.  the reason for this is that the company wants to run, network packet monitoring tools within a classroom environment, and wants to keep it away from the Corporate network.

My understanding of Horizon is that Horizon does not support standalone machines, as it requires all the machines to have a VM Agent installed that talks back to the Horizon server.I can create a private network within horizon via a Switch, but still we need a corporate connection to that machine.

Does anyone know of a way to do this, cos all the options I can think off, still requires a corporate network connection to that machine

VMWare Horizon View Client 3.X - command line issue

We are having issue with the View Client 3.2 (also 3.4).

To reduce the fat-client computer complexity, we launch vmware-view.exe with a vbs and there's no explorer.exe on the local user profile.

When launching the view client with a parameter(-serverurl and -desktopname), the process might remains in the task manager if the user disconnects or cancel before logging in.

The issue doesn't occur if the client is launched without any parameter.

The problem, the vbs script runs the vmware-view.exe and waits it up before launching it again if it's closed. With the issue, since there's no explorer.exe, the user might have a black screen. The user shutdowns the computer or can do a CTRL+AL+DELETE to log off the local profile.

I can patch it up to check the applications task with a powershell script at 10 seconds interval, but that's not the long-term fix.

Do you have the same issue when you launch the view client with -serverurl and -desktopname ? Try several times, and you might have bunch of vmware-view.exe processes even if there are no windows in the task bar...

Disable RTAV at the client instead of agent using GPO

I dont see this as a client option in the latest GPO bundle VMware-Horizon-View-Extras-Bundle-3.4.0-2769709.zip, ony an agent option.

We want RTAV on in the pool but off for certain clients. How can we accomplsh this? Enabling the policies "Exclude all devices" and disabling the policies "Allow Audio Input Devices, and Allow Audio Output Devices" is not having the desired effect. How else can we accomplish this?

I recommend having this ability in the client GPO's.

Spanning pools across hosts

When I first set up my View environment, I saw that you could create a pool that spans multiple datastores on the same host.  After testing VSAN, I saw that you can create the pool in a cluster and the pool spans hosts with using shared storage.  I removed the VSAN and now Im wondering if its possible to span a pool across 2 or more hosts using local storage.  I tried putting them in a cluster but when I create the pool, the datastores are not listed, presumably because they are not shared storage.  Is it possible to span the pool across 2 hosts and have them each use their own datastores?  I have a lab that will not fit on one host and I dont want to have to configure half the machines to connect to a different pool.

VMware View 5 - The View Connection Server authentication failed

I have a user when he tries to log into vmware view 5 he gets the error:

2014-02-12 09_42_17-DONNIE-PC - VNC Viewer.png

I've tried refreshing his VDI but it did not work, in one incident that was similar to this I had to completely reload the guest OS.  So I did and it still occurs, I did some looking on the local log and found the following:

13:00:12,287 INFO  <1528> [wswc] Log for VMware View Client, version=5.0.1 build-640055

13:00:12,287 INFO  <1528> [wswc] hostname=Donnie-PC

13:00:12,287 ERROR <MessageFrameWorkDispatch> [wswc_command] brokerGetTunnel (tunnel-connection) response xml ERROR = tunnel session not created

I also checked the event viewer on the admin web interface and it shows he logged in successfully then literally 1 second later he logged off.  I also checked the viewcs server and found these events in the event viewer:

2014-02-11 13_22_57-ptl-viewcs on esx05.dfw1.architel.net.png

2014-02-11 13_23_12-ptl-viewcs on esx05.dfw1.architel.net.png

I can log onto vmware view 5 with this users credentials on my computer and I can get into his VDI just fine.  I can log onto my VDI on his computer just fine, it appears that he can not log in with his credentials on this specific computer.  I also removed his assignment from the specific VDI and readded it but still no go.  Any suggestions???

Disk is already managed by View

I'd like to highlight one of our KB articles that is getting some traction with our Horizon View customers. The issue can occur if the ADAM database contains an invalid entry for a persistent disk.

Symptoms:

  • Attempting to import the disk from vCenter Server fails with the error:
This disk is already managed by View
  • Cannot detach a Persistent User Data Disk in View Manager.
  • Cannot import a Persistent Disk from vCenter Server for a virtual machine that was deleted in View Administrator.
  • The Persistent disk is visible when the option to show incompatible files is selected.

If you are encountering any of these symptoms in your environment, please refer to KB article: Cannot detach a Persistent Disk in View Manager 4.5 and later (2007076). The article has a 5 star customer rating.

Note: This KB contains two Warnings. Be sure you completely understand the article, and as always check that your backups are working and are valid.

user unable to login, "display protocol for this desktop is not available"

$

I'm starting to get reports of this more and more in my view environment. Users are logging in from Wyse P20 zero clients. The error message the end user receives is "display protocol for this desktop is unavailable" however, via view manager the desktop does not report as being unavailable. The state of the desktop is usually "disconnected."

If I take a look at the events for the desktop this is what I see:

Unable to launch from Pool Partners for user domain\user: There were no machines available that reported protocol [PCOIP] as ready.

Any insight would be appreciated as this is really starting to frustrate my users.

Thanks in advance!

View Session detected as idle

I have a situation where I just set up some Dell thin clients that are direct connecting to some VMs that are running the VMware Direct Connect Plugin.  At 6:30AM they auto power on and if they are not used throughout the day come 4:30PM their sessions are closing.   I want them to stay in session until I auto power them off at 10:00PM.  In the log file I find this:

2015-08-20T16:31:16.080-05:00 DEBUG (04C4-087C) <Session Poll Thread> [wsnm_xmlapi] Did not find feature lastUserActivity for sessionId=1

2015-08-20T16:31:16.080-05:00 DEBUG (04C4-087C) <Session Poll Thread> [wsnm_xmlapi] Idle timer for sessionId=1 = 36047 seconds

2015-08-20T16:31:16.080-05:00 DEBUG (04C4-087C) <Session Poll Thread> [wsnm_xmlapi] sessionId=1 detected as idle, disconnecting all sessions

In the group policy I've set sessionTimeout=99999 and userIdleTimeout=-1.  So at 6:30AM I'm seeing this in the log file:

2015-08-20T06:30:31.061-05:00 DEBUG (02F8-0B4C) <2892> [pcoip_mfw] VMware HKLM 'Agent\Configuration\XMLAPI' policy values at start of pcoip_server_win32: sessionTimeout=99999;userIdleTimeout=-1

Can someone suggest some other setting I'm missing to keep these sessions alive?

Thanks

Horizon View 6.0.0 Persona issues

$

I have a ticket with VMware support open to troubleshoot this request, but I wanted to see if anyone here has seen anything similar to this issue. Recently, within the last week or two we began noticing an issue with persona enabled View desktops where we are unable to copy a folder from the desktop onto any share or drive mapping for our NAS, which is an EMC Isilon running some version of OneFS 7.2. The persona repository is also located on the same NAS. The message received is the following:

"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the folder. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x80070032: The request is not supported."

If persona is uninstalled from the desktop in question, the issue immediately is resolved. I've performed some testing and we are able to create folders on a persona enabled desktop and any NAS share the user has access to, and we can copy or cut/paste individual files or groups of files into existing folders on the NAS from a View desktop. If a folder with the same name exists in both locations, we are also able to cut/paste or copy the folder from the desktop into the NAS share and it will successfully perform a merge. I've tested UNC path vs. share names or mapped drives and it doesn't make any difference with the behavior of this.

Up until this point, with Horizon View 6 persona has been rock solid for us, but I wonder if we are also having persona sync issues that just haven't been reported yet.

Persona Repository & Server 2012

Currently your Persona Repository resides on a Server 2012 virtual machine, a change we made in the last 30 days or so.  Since that time we began to notice profile issues spread across our VDI environment. Everything from Synchronization issues, to group policy errors at login.

Has anyone had any experiences with Server 2012 and Persona?

**Also note that the Persona Repository is also set to dedupe each night to save raw disk space.

Asrock Extreme6 z87 MB NIC/Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

Hello,

I was hoping to get some help with my issue, as of right now i am having an issue with one of my NIC's not being recognized GigaLAN Intel® I211AT i have used and installed the igb-4.2.16.8-1242301 but this seems to not work, I was hoping to find someone else that has the correct VIB/Offline ZIP so i can get this NIC to work.

Second i have a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS 1gb video card with this server and ESXI 5.5 doesn't recognize this either, I was hoping that someone had a VIB/Offline ZIP that would work with this Video card, I'm not sure if this is not recognized because of it not having the drivers or because ESXI doesn't see my PCI slot its in. I am willing to work with someone on this issue even if it means creating my own VIB2ZIP package.

These are the last 2 things i need ESXI 5.5 to see and my server will be set.

thanks

Rob

VMWare Horizon View Client screen goes blank/white on popup from another Mac program. Any fix?

I am using version 3.0  of VMware Horizon View Client for Mac OS X. I typically run it in full screen mode on a secondary external monitor. Every time I get a popup from another Mac program like reminder, iMessage, even timeout notification in browser, the VMWare screen goes blank (white). I found a work-around that if I resize the window - exit full screen mode and re-enter full screen mode, the display is restored. Is there a fix for this?

odd failure to connect to a terminal server

Running on view 5.2 with TS 2008. we've had TS connectivity functioning fine for several years through view. tried it today and can't connect to any TS server in two different pools through a security server (not sure about through a CS, since im not in the building). connecting to regular Win7 VM's through the sec server works fine.

for the TS's, I try to connect and it says "connection server is preparing the session" or whatever, does that for a couple minutes then throws an error. view admin event logs show the session was requested, allocated, and then that i connected without issue. it never shows an error. then view admin event logs show me logoff the TS once the error shows up on my client. VDM logs on the client and the TS itself all appear fine. has anyone seen behavior liek this before? im kind of suspecting a FW issue but usually i associate a black screen with a FW problem and i'm not seeing a black screen at all with this current issue.
