Snapshot, recompose, and console issues when using vGPU

$

I have noticed while creating my master images that using the new vGPU feature in vSphere 6 causes some problems.

Normally if you have a snapshot on a VM, you can revert to the snapshot at any time regardless if the VM is powered on or off.  If the VM has the PCI device for the vGPU feature, this is no longer the case.  You will get an error message in the console stateing the operation is not allowed in the current state if the VM is powered on.  If you power off the VM you can then revert to the snapshot.

If you have a View Pool that is configured to use the vGPU, you can no longer do a View Recompose operation without first shutting all the machines down.  Even if you choose force logoff, the VMs will fail to shutdown and will fail to recompose.

Using vGPU also prevents you from working on the image via the vSphere console and web client console.  The mouse will not work properly.  When using vDGA Im told the console screen is blacked out by design however when using vGPU, its not blacked out, it just doesnt work right.  It seems as though we have 2 options when building or maintaining master images.  You either have to always use RDP to do anything instead of the console or you have to wait until the master image is completed before added the PCI device to the VM and or delete the PCI device from the master VM every time you need to do maintenance on the image.  I did open a ticket on this but Im being told it was not intended to work via the console.

Fullscreen misbehaves in Horizon View Client 3.2 in Yosemite

I'm having an issue similar to the one described in full screen broken on horizon view client 3.0

I'm using Horizon View Client in a Macbook Pro and a external monitor. If I expand the View window into Full Screen, it "bleeds" into the other screen - part of the remote desktop window goes into the other screen and the rest of that screen goes black. This happens indistinctly of whether the "Displays have different spaces" option is turned on or off in Mission Control (and yes, I've logged out after I've changed that option) and if the desktop have the same or different resolutions - this is as if the Full Screen window's resolution was larger than the available resolution in the screen so it spills over into the other desktop. (See attached screenshots)

If I use the Dock to enable the option to Assign Horizon View Client to a single Desktop then the View Client starts crashing and relaunching in an infinite loop as soon as it goes full screen, requiring a Force Stop.

I'm using Yosemite (10.10.2) and this happens with both View Client 3.2 and 3.0. Surprisingly, Horizon View Client 2.2 (which I copied from an older Mac with Mavericks) works as it should - when I expand the window into Full Screen in any Desktop it only takes over one screen with no odd behavior.

Anybody else has experienced something similar? Is this a known bug? And more importantly, any fixes other than to stick to 2.2?

Removing View server after vCenter failure (or other options)?

$

last week, in an attempt to upgrade my vCenter server from 5.5 to 6.0, the vCenter install blew up - the first step in the upgrade, SSO, I believe, failed and left the system in a dead state. Being a physical box, it's not as easy as taking a snapshot and reverting to that in the event of a meltdown. I tried to get it back, but I was unable to get vCenter to properly reinstall after that point, so I took the 'opportunity' to migrate away from the aging physical box and over to a new vCSA. I now have a vCSA 6 instance of vCenter running, all my hosts are migrated to it and everything is happy - except View.

In my researching, it seems that there is no way to migrate from one vCenter server to another. In order to remove the existing vCenter server, you need to delete the pools. In order to delete the pools, it needs to be able to contact the vCenter server. I tried adding a new pool that looks tot he new appliance, removing a few guests from view and putting them back under the new pool, but that did not work - they just sat at 'waiting for agent'. Near as I can tell, even THAT is not supported.

I don't have a huge View deployment, about a dozen VMs used for vdi, so unless someone has a better idea, it seems the best course of action will be to nuke the View server and rebuild it from scratch. I looked around to see where it might be looking for a DB and can't really find anything other than the ADAM database on the View Connection server. If I'm going that route, is there anything other than formatting the connection server and reloading it from scratch that I need to look out for to get a clean new install of view? Or is there some way for me to pull this out of the gutter that I haven't found?

Thinprint port name

1. Is there any way to stop Thinprint from using the same port name? Every printer uses the port name TPVM: causing them to stack up.

Capture.PNG

2. How do you stop the virtual desktop from setting the default printer to that of the default printer on the vmware client machine?

The documentation ( ThinPrint Documentation ) states a value called UserDrivenDefaultPrinter but that doesn't work. it's ignored completely. Also is it possible to configure what printers TPAutoconnect will install or is it everything or nothing?

Using Outlook 2013 advanced search on Linked-Clone machines

Hey everybody,

i know that was a question that has been asked before but that was long ago and i hope there may be a few more workarounds now...

We just startet our new VDI project based on VMware View 6.1.1. We are currently deploying Windows 7 with Office 2013.

Based on the recommendation of VMware we deactivated the "Windows Search" Service. The only Problem is, that disabling the Service also takes away the advanced search functionality (from, topic, etc...).

I know we could just enable the service but i think that would produce a lot of I/O because the index has to be rebuild everytime a user logs in...

Are there any workarounds for this kind of problem?

We are also using the VMware UEM. Maybe that could help?

Tell me, if you guys need any further information!

Kind regards,

View Persona advice

Hi and thanks for looking at my discussion. We have a long standing VMWare View 5.2 environment that is currently using VMWare Persona Management backed via a virtual single node 2008 R2 file server.  We get about 600 concurrent sessions during peak hours and to be honest its worked pretty well for us so far.  The issue we have is with maintenance as we are 24x7x365 and as its a single node if we turn it off it causes issues for logged in users while its offline.  I'm in the process of re-building our environment with Horizon 6 and wanted to start again with the Persona infrastructure and wanted some advice.  I've looked into a clustered file server using MSCS and I’ve read information about DFS solutions but just wanted some real life examples setups that would fit with our 365 working patterns.

Horizon Client Freezes for 3-5 Seconds Randomly

$

Hello Everyone,

I have been chasing a ghost in my VDI environment for a while now with no success. All of our VDI users (myself included) experience a weird freezing event with our desktops that will happen randomly. The desktop could go days without a freeze, and then do it 3 times in the same day. When the desktop does freeze, I can still move the mouse around but I can not click on anything. Once the desktop unfreezes, it registers all the move clicks and button presses that occurred while it was frozen and performs them all at once. It is very similar to the way a PC acts when its memory is over consumed.

Here are my troubleshooting steps so far:

  1. Since I am able to move the mouse around, that led me to believe it was a problem with the client so I had my users write down the time when the machine froze. With those times, I scanned through all the VDM logs on the physical PC for any logged event at those times. I could not find anything. I even checked the agent logs during those time periods and still found nothing logged.
  2. I called VMware support and had a tech remote into my system. I gave him the time periods of the freeze events that occurred that day and he could not find anything in the logs. He also checked the Connection server for PCOIP drops but could not find anything. I was informed that there was no evidence to declare the problem VMware related.
  3. I installed and configured vRealize for Horizon and monitored PCOIP traffic and bandwidth. Both look good. I noticed that vRealize is claiming that the VDI desktops are over consuming memory. they are running on 4GB and claim they are using all 4GB. However, task manager on the VM's themselves report that average consumption is 2GB. (This may be unrelated but thought I would mention it)
  4. Thinking that the VM's needed more processors and memory, I upgraded the VM's to 5GB ram and 4vcpu's (which is over kill for our usage). 4 hours after the recompose with new hardware specs, I experienced another freeze. I immediately looked at the memory usage trace I had running for this machine and it was holding steady at 2GB.

We are using the latest of everything for software. 5.5 for hosts, vcenter and vsphere. Also running Horizon with view 6.0.1.

Any ideas in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated!

VMware view connection servers slow

HI All,

We’ve observed inconsistency in data in view horizon console from the connection server USVMwareview1.

The link https://vmware view1/admin takes a lot of time to load and refresh data after logging in.

The data on connecting to horizon console from rest of the connection servers is consistent and loading and refreshing of data is also normal on them.

VMware View version 5.2

Any help on this issues much appreciated

Desktop pool without domain

Hello,

I am setting up an environment for a tradeshow booth.  The idea is that sales people can boot up a copy of a vm running a piece of our software to demo to potential customers.

These VM's are not on a network, and therefore are not needed to be a member of a domain.  Just simply a standalone VM.

My question is, when I get to the guest customization aspect of the setup, I am prompted for a domain.  I do not wish to use one at all.

Is there a way to bypass the guest customization, or set it up so I don't have to use one, specifically to not join a domain.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello,

according to view-61-scenarios-ssl-certificates.pdf, I added a locked.properties file under C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\sslgateway\conf

serverProtocol=http

serverPortNonSSL=8670

serverHostNonSSL=0.0.0.0

and then restarted the service even the connection server, but got nothing changed.

Advanced USB splitting

$

I have a composite device a Phillips Speechmike II

It has a microphone, track ball and some function buttons, I think it splits into 3/4 devices the Vids seems to be

VID_0911 PID_149A

it then has

MI_00

MI_03

MI_04

MI_05

I split it and then disallow keyboard/mouse devices which then get handled by the client and the mic works and all is good, however if I split it my software no longer see's the device correctly because it wants to see the keyboard part of the device as a local device.

Is there someway to split it and then only disallow the mouse part of the device so that both the keyboard and the sound are local but the trackball is handled locally as it is not smooth otherwise.

Thanks

Hi,

We are working on VMware View 5.1 and the desktops pools are both floating and Dedicated. User are configured with Outlook client for IMAP Gmail account, and once

the configuration is done the size is around 5 times the normal PST size which is configured on the local desktop. Ex= If Local Desktop PST file size is showing =200 MB

the same is showing 5 GB in VMware View VDI floating pool desktop. It is gmail IMAP account.

Let us know why this is happening and any suggestions to the same and it is highly critical as user space is getting more in network share.

Again if any information is required let us know.

Thanks

Ramesh
