Hiding disposable disk

Is there an easy way to hide the disposable disk in VMware Horizon when the drive letter is automatically assigned?

Problems provisioning pool

$

Im attempting to create a desktop pool (using Horizon View 6) for the first time and hoping someone can shed some light on the problems Im having provisioning.

Im basically creating a floating pool of 25 linked clones on a dedicated node using a W7 image that about 32 GB.

Poweredge R730

dual 14 core E5-2695

256 GB RAM

1 local SATA for ESX

2 local raid 5 SAS datatores using 3 NLSAS 6Gbps drives each

1 local SSD SAS MIX use MLC 12Gbs for host cache and VM Swap

PERC H730 with latest firwmare (25.2.1.0037)

ESXi 5.5

The VMs have 2 core and 2 GB RAM each.

When I provision the pool, I see the replica get created and the VMs getting created. As the VMs are getting created, the vsphere events tab start showing numerous connectivity issues such as "lost access to volume xxx due to connectivity issues" and then "Successfully restored access to volume xxx following connectivity issues."  Once it restores access, I see more VMs get created, some get recofingured, some get powered on, etc... then it losses connection again and this process repeats numerous times.  The connectivity errors happen on both the datastores and SSD volume.

I was orginally monitoring the host with vcenter but when this problem occurs, vcenter starts having problems accessing the host so I started monitoring the host directly.  I was watching the performance graphs and after about half the machines are created, the graphs start sporadically missing datapoints for minutes at a time (regardless of which graph I am monitoring).  After a few minutes datapoint start getting logged again.  This happens sporadically until all 25 machines are completely provisioned.

I have tried creating the pool with the replica and clones assigned to the 2 datastores which seems to take about 70 minutes before all 25 machines are completely provisioned.  I then tried with the replica on the SSD and clones on the datastores which took about an hour.  Ive also tried switching changing the image from thin to thick provision but that did not appear to have much effect.  Im not running any quickprep/sysprep.  There are no resource reservations on the host.  View is configured for the default of 8 concurrent operations.

Im wondering if its normal to take that long to provision 25 VMs.  It concerns me that vpshere starts have connectivity problems.  I understand that booting and configuring 25 VM is resource intensive but I thought vsphere was supposed to be able to handle that without the client becoming unresponsive.  I tried it using a different identical R730 node and had the same problems.  It does appear to recover but Im not sure its working the way it is suppose to.  Perhaps this issue is better suited under the vsphere category unless this is normal for View.

VMware Horizon 6.1 and Microsoft One drive for Business Sync

$

One of my clients requires to have Onedrive for Business in a View environment with linked clones. I read about the Onedrive for Business sync client and apparently you can not specify/change the location of the download location.

The customer demands that the Onedrive for Business client is installed and will sync/download the content from Onedrive, but in a linked clone environment this might mean that the sync client will download all content of Onedrive each time a user logs on to a dekstop, which we obviously do not want.

I told the customer that he potentially will have to store 1 TB of data per user in his datacenter, meaning he will need a lot of SAN space, but the customer does not care about this.

Does anybody have any experience with the Onedrive for business sync client in a Linked clone View environment and how to best set this up?

Reuse Previously Provisiond View System as a pool template

I'd like to know if anyone has done a write-up on creating a pool template that is based a a clone of a previously provisioned VDI system?

View 5.3.3

FYI I've done this one before and got it to work but either I missed something in my documentation that I'm now unable to remember or something else has changed.

We are an Engineering company that uses specialized software supported by a group of Power Users in our engineering department. I have a test Pool specifically for them to use when working on new software deployments or upgrades. Often they will come to me and request a new pool based on their test system (instead of having them RDP into a template, join it back to the domain, re-work the whole install/upgrade, pass it back to me to clean up and create a new pool).

In my testing, I complete the following:

1. uninstall all VMware View agents and VMware Tools

2. Clean Temp directories and all VMware folders

    c:\programdata\vmware

    c:\program files\common files\vmware

    c:\program files (x86)\common files\vmware

    c:\program files\vmware

    c:\program files (x86)\vmware

    c:\windows\syswow64\config\systemprofile\appdata\roaming

    c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\appdata\roaming

    c:\users\administrator\appdata\local\vmware\

    c:\windows\temp

3. Remove other Reg keys that relate to VMware

    HKLM\Software\Policies\VMware

    HKLM\Software\Policies\Teradici

    HKLM\Software\Policies\VMware, Inc.

    HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.

    HKLM\Software\ThinPrint

4. Via Reg, reset default user profile path back to %SystemDrive%\Users

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ProfilesDirectory = %SystemDrive%\Users

5. Change Temp and Tmp Environment variables back to C:\Windows\Temp

6. Reset Changes to the Page File by resetting the following Key with an export of a known good template system

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

After all of this I receive one of the following errors when trying to provision my systems:

If the disposable disk in mounted on a different drive letter than expected I get this:

View Composer agent initialization state error (21): Failed to mount system disposable disk. Please check the parent VM if an existing disk is using the same drive letter. (waited 0 seconds)

If the disposable disk is mounted on the correct drive letter I get this...

View Composer agent initialization state error (9): Failed to relocate disposable (waited 0 seconds)

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Multiple View sessions, same PC?

View 6.0.1, Client 3.3.0

Can I have multiple View sessions from the same PC? In other words

  • Launch the Horizon View client, login, and access a desktop
  • Launch the Horizon View client again, login as a different user, and access a different desktop
  • Repeat until I have many session open at once

The reason I ask is we are migrating from Exchange to Gmail. Google provides a utility called GAMME that in a larger environment can be run from multiple machines with each machine migrating one portion of the alphabet. Rather than using 10 physical machines I would rather use 10 View desktops. This will work slick if from my real PC I can access all 10 view desktops. I will be using a different login account to access each desktop.

Persona initial user login doesn't always synchronize correctly

$

When logging in for the first time to a Persona Managed Windows 7 VM, it doesn't synchronize correctly if logged on for less than the 15 minute profile upload interval. When the initial login is less than 15 minutes, not all folders are synchronized and the items pinned to the taskbar show up as a white 'paper' that when clicked on returns the error "Can't open this item  It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Do you want to remove this item?"

Is there a way to get Persona Management to synchronize profiles immediately upon first login to the domain?

We currently have only this one floating pool that is going to be using Persona as we are still testing.

Horizon PowerCLI using with VSAN

Dears,

recently I met a strange problem when using Horizon PowerCLI with VSAN environment.

I created a automatic linked clone pool with VSAN environment and required a daily scheduled task to disable/enable this pool.

The solution I found is via Horizon PowerCLI - update-automaticlinkedclonepool.

Although I tried the PowerCLI quite fine in my lab, I had no luck when deploying the script to the production.

The scripts (or the command) are almost the same between lab and production, just like following:

     Update-AutomaticLinkedCLonePool -Pool_id {POOL_ID} -disabled $true

And the error messages:

Update-AutomaticLinkedClonePool : PowershellService::UpdateAutomaticLinkedClonePool FAILED, error=Virtual SAN functionality is not supported:Virtual SAN is not available because no Virtual SAN datastores are configured.
位於 行:1 字元:32
+ Update-AutomaticLinkedClonePool <<<< -Pool_id {POOL_ID} -disabled $true
  + CategoryInfo : InvalidResult: (vmware.view.pow...LinkedClonePoo
  l:UpdateAutomaticLinkedClonePool) [Update-AutomaticLinkedClonePool], Excep
  tion
  + FullyQualifiedErrorId : PowershellService::UpdateAutomaticLinkedClonePoo
  l FAILED,vmware.view.powershell.cmdlets.UpdateAutomaticLinkedClonePool

If I changed the pool setting with using not VSAN and the desktops still stayed in VSAN, the script ran normally as expected.

Once the setting change back to use VSAN, it failed again with the same error messages.

There is no such issue in my lab (the same horizon version 6.0.2 / ESXi 5.5 update 2).

Desktop pools in VSAN are still workable with the enable/disable script.

Could anyone give me some hints to do with this issue?

I would appreciate a lot!

Regards,

Joe

Hi,

I installed the View PowerCLI on our View Broker, but everytime I use a command I'm getting the following error (e.g. get pool command):

Get-Pool : PowershellService::GetPool FAILED, error=NotAuthorized

I don't know how to authenticate, I'm logged in with the administrator account.

Thanks ind advance

View license count

Hi,

We started with 10 license of View Horizon Enterprise and later we bought another 10 user pack. We have concurrent users license.

In the View console I can only enter one license key. The console shows that we are licensed but doesn't show for how many users. How does the licensing in View work technically? All I can see is the usage.

Thanks,

Edy

a VM machine got stuck

Hi,

In a linked clone pool a maching is stuck. I cannot refresh or delete the machine from the View Console. I cannot even power off the machine in Vsphere. The Power off error is "Another task is already in progress"

I guess View tries to remedy the VM too. How can I stop the View task for this machine or pool so that I can power off the VM in Vsphere and delete it from disk. I guess after I have deleted the VM, View Composer will auto create it again.

Thanks,

Edy

View Performance

Hey Everyone,

Troubleshooting performance and need some suggestions and clarifications.

What can we do to speed up the performance, really slow?  It doesn't look like it is IOPS, we put some on flash drives and no difference.  If we put 1 video card in each ESXi host will it make a difference?

Environment:

3 HP Servers, Proliant g3's - ESXi hosts running servers and view environment.

2 sockets - 8 cores - 32 logical, 196 gigs of memory each

CPU on hosts averages 15%

Memory on hosts averages 70%

View version 5.1.0 build 2323236

Storage is HP servers 9 TB's 50% utilization.

We would like to set each computer to NOT check for a certificate when logging it.  This needs to be done for each user and need to know if there is a registry setting we can change to make this happen.  I did a little looking and can't seem to find it.  Anyone know if there is one to Disable SSL on the Horizon View client 3.2??  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

VMWare Horizon View 6.0.2 Scanner Redirection Caveats

$
0
0

1.  Scanner redirection does not create a device on your virtual desktop that matches the name of the actual scanner.  It creates a generic scanner in Device Manager called VMWare Virtual WIA Scanner (or VMWare Virtual TWAIN Scanner I am assuming).  For us this stinks because the image capture software our client uses (Vertex by Jack Henry), has a prepopulated list of scanners you can select.  So if we plug in a Canon-CR50 and select Canon CR50/80 in the application, it does not recognize that this scanner is attached to the virtual desktop.

2.  You must install a TWAIN or WIA driver on your thin client.  If you can't find a TWAIN or WIA driver, you are out of luck.  For teller check image scanners, we have found no TWAIN or WIA drivers for the TellerScan TS-230, TS-240, or the Canon CR-55.  We have found a TWAIN driver for the Canon CR-50 (from the Canon Europe site no less), but issue #1 above means we are out of luck.
