After Upgrade to 6, Security Server Not Changing listening Port

$

Ran into a weird situation where after upgrading a security server to 6.1.0-2509221, it doesn't change the SSL listening port when before the upgrade it wasn't on the standard SSL port.

It was originally configured to listen on 444 before the upgrade, following the upgrade I tried to change it back to 443 and a netstat -ban still shows it listening on port 444.

I double checked the the config.properties file, and there was no entry for serverPort, and the configuration shows 443 in the View admin manager.

- Re-applying the configuration via the web page gives no change, still listens on 444.

- Restarting the security server service no change, still listens on 444.

- Rebooting the server no change, still listens on 444.

- Statically placed serverPort=443 in the config.properties, still listens on 444.

All the ports are verified open, both 444 and 443, so I'm thinking I may have hit a bug. Anybody else have security servers that listen on non-standard SSL ports?

A complete reinstall of the security server is next, changing the listen port back to 443, shouldn't have to do that though.

View Composer fails

Hi,

I have a View 6 demo running, and it has been ok, but today i noticed that the View composer is marked red. I tried to reboot the composer, connection and vcenter servers, but same issue. When i click on the View Composer link to check status i get the message below

I tried to remove the Composer role from the server, and reinstalled it so i generated a new self signed certificate. But im not able to verify that new certificate so i changed back to the old certificate and then im stuck.

Please advice, have not done any special troubleshooting on the composer before The SQL connection is working okay from the View Composer SQL client and to the SQL server, im using the SA user.

Thanks for reply

Persona Management sync issues for certain files/folders (broken pinned icons)

I recently noticed that users who logged off too quickly from a linked clone pool after their first session would be greeted by white/blank icons for the default pinned applications on the task bar.  The result from the user perspective is similar/identical to:

Broken pinned icons

Re: Windows 7 Quick Launch Error WEIRD

http://vmtoday.com/2013/01/blank-quicklaunch-icons-on-view-desktop/

However, the details are slightly different and the fixes are already in place.

Brief background on the setup:  I am using Horizon View 5.2 w/ FP2.  The ViewPM.ADM template is attached to the GPO and the "Rom local settings folders" option is enabled.  The Profile upload interval was 10 minutes but was reduced to 5 minutes for testing.  Profile folders are shared/permissioned properly and this seems to be a failure with the persona management software on the pool VM as the data will eventually be uploaded if the user does not log out before the first (possibly second) sync.  The pool is set to refresh immediately after logoff.  Client Side Caching is disabled so KB2016416 should not apply.  The pool was creating using the deployment guide and the provided scripts from VMware, etc.  However, the client firewall was re-enabled so HTML Access in Feature Pack 2 will work.

To test I used an affected pool and deleted my existing profile on the file server.  After logging in to the pool VM, the username.V2 folder was created in the Persona repository share.  At this point, the folder is blank.  The VM works as expected without problems.  If I examine the local profile in the VM, all of the folders and files affected by this issue exist (C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick launch).

I let 5 minutes pass and Persona Management does an initial sync creating what looks to be a full sync.  However, if I examine the "\\server\share\username.V2\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\" folder, it only contains desktop.ini and two shortcuts ('Show desktop' and 'Switch between windows').  Missing are the actual shortcuts for the pinned items and a few other folders ("User Pinned" and "User Pinned\TaskBar") including more shortcuts.

If I let 5 more minutes pass for another sync, the missing files will appear.  At this point if I log off, all is well (unless there are other files that PM fails to copy).  Running "openfiles /query /v" on the file server shows more files being sync'd during logoff.

If I log off before all of the files are successfully synchronized, the next time I log on I'll be greeted with white icons for the pinned programs.

Version 5.1.1 claimed to have resolved a problem similar to this when a pool was set to refresh immediately, so perhaps there is yet another related bug?

I have opened a support case but posting here in case anyone else has experienced and resolved this issue.

RSA Securid agent on linked clone guest OS - problems

I have one connection server for all users in our network and it uses standard password auth. We have a requirement for two-factor auth and went with RSA tokens. However, we couldn't enable it via the connection server because then users could RDP to the vm's without RSA. So we installed it on the guest and disabled SSO in View GPO. Dedicated VM's are fine, but linked clones consistently have trouble authenticating, 2-3 failures almost everytime before success. I'm thinking it may be an RSA agent auto-registration problem, but wanted to rule out View. Any thoughts?

Hi, when I assign a VGPU to a VM I have to reserve all the memory (Virtual RAM not VIDEO RAM) to the VM?

Is this a must?

Horizon View Agent affecting vbscripts

$

My organization uses a program (attachmate reflection) that runs a vbscript that performs a screen scrape and passes the info to another program to load documents and other information.

The funny thing is that vbscript works on stand alone machines and VMs, but NOT on VMware View VMs. As it turns out the VMware View Horizon Agent is causing the script to crash the application.  It's completely baffling. I can't see any reason why the view agent would crash when the vbscript is run.  I tried disabling each and all the services that came with the view agent to see which was the culprit. I even tried downgrading to View agent 6.0.1 and 6.0.0 but nothing works. Except for when I uninstall the agent the vbscript works fine.

The script was created about 14 years ago and I'm no expert at scripting, but any help would be appreciated in finding out why the view agent is affecting the vbscript this way.

Pools not listed in VMware client

Hi,

Our VMware Views users are collected into a single active directory group. This group is entitled to the various pools. When members of this group log into the View client, no pools are presented. If I try to log into the same pools as an admin user, they are there in the client. I double checked that the View users are entitled to the pools, and they are. There are no authentication errors in the process, the pools are just not displayed. What could be causing this? Everything was fine on Friday. No changes to the View client happened at that time.

Thanks in advance

Is there any way to require clients be a certain version on the secure gateway server? If not is there a way to see what version a session is using?

We just started trying the PCoIP with 10 dell wyse P25 and teradici card, running off a brand new dell Rack server, everything has been working out pretty good other than for this error.

Just about every morning some of the people are getting this error below.

Has anyone else ever had this? All the machines are Windows 8.1

We are on vShpere 5.5 and View Administrator 6.0.1.

How to PXE boot the Zero Client in Horizon View to access the linked clones using TFTP server.

We are planning to use the old desktops as the Zero Clients. We want to boot from the PXE boot to access the non persistence linked clones or persistence disks . Is that possible to access by PXE boot.

Used Product. Horizon View 6.

View session(View 6.1) not registering on the connection servers

So I have a pool which fails to register an active session when I connect to it since we updated to view 6.1

If I look at the event logs I see the following

Module: Connection Server: User <netuser> has logged in

Module: Connection Server: User <netuser> requested Pool vmdia

Module: Connection Server: User <netuser> requested Pool vmdia, allocated machine VMDIA001

Module: Agent: The agent running on machine VMDIA001 has accepted an allocated session for user <netuser>

The session starts just fine. My app volumes and writable volume connect and yet when I look at sessions nothing shows up.

If I look at the pool it still shows my vm as available.

If I leave for the day and attempt to connect to my session from home I get an which tells me the pciop protocol is not available.

If I try to connect to the session from any other location I get the same message until I force the vm to reboot. (A service restart might do it as well)

Any ideas what I should do?  Our other pools are working just fine.

I am running Windows 8.1 with current updates.  I have the 64 bit View client from 3-14-15 installed.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times.  I can authenticate and see my desktops in view.  However, clicking on any of them after displaying the VDI's splash screen yields the vmware-remotemks.exe crash

I was having problems getting my Lync 2013 VDI plugin to sync as expected and decided to remove both the VDI plugin and Horizon View Client.  Any ideas?

Client gets redirected to wrong Desktop Pool

$

Hello Community,

i got a problem with Horizon 6.1. Sometimes a user gets redirected to a wrong Desktop Pool for which the user is not entitled. In that situation, the client receives a "You are not entitled to use the system" error message during login process. On a second attempt everything works fine as it should. I double-checked that vdiuser5 only has 1 desktop entitlement.

On the View Connection server, i can see the following entries:

First login attempt (fails):

User VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5 has logged in

User VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5 requested Pool aflc                                                                               <-- That is the wrong desktop pool

Unable to launch from Pool aflc for user VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5: User is not entitled to this Pool          <-- Correct, the user is not entitled to this pool so it fails

Second attempt (succeeded):

User VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5 has logged in

User VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5 requested Pool vdiext                                                                           <-- Now that is the correct one

User VDI-DEMO\vdiuser5 requested Pool vdiext, allocated machine VDIext-105

The agent running on machine VDIEXT-105 has accepted an allocated session for user VDI-DEMO\vdiuser

Windows NLB application level monitoring script

$

Hi, Attached is a script to monitor and restart view security server services and leverage windows NLB based on service failure.  Its adapted from: Windows NLB and Application Level health check | Tech Trail Mix

Figured it could be of some use to people and maybe get some feedback on how i can improve it.

Here’s a quick run through of  how to implement it:

1. Setup windows firewall to allow inbound and outbound traffic from the machine running the script.

2. Customise script for the servers we want to monitor, fire up powershell ISE and open up the script.

3. Pop in the hostnames of each pair of connection servers and setup the email address you want the notifications sent to.

            4. Set the execution policy in power shell to unrestricted on each nlb node Run power shell as Administrator and pop in the following:

    Set-ExecutionPolicy – Unrestricted

            5. Create a scheduled task to run the script at regular intervals, not on the servers you wish to monitor.

C:\schtasks /create /tn ViewHealthCheck /tr “powershell -NoLogo -WindowStyle hidden -file c:\ViewHealthCheck.ps1″ /sc minute /mo 1 /ru System

What it checks:

  1. Check the status of each NLB node
  2. Check the status of the view services
  3. If a service has failed then attempt to restart it then recheck the service and see if it has started successfully, if not stop that NLB node.

It will send email notifications if it detects a failure.

Currently it checks the following services in this order:

  1. MpsSvc - windows firewall
  2. wsnm - VMware Horizon View Framework Component
  3. PCOIPSG - VMware Horizon View PCoIP Secure Gateway
  4. wstunnel - VMware Horizon View Security Gateway Component
  5. wsbroker - VMware Horizon View Security Server
  6. VMware Horizon View Blast Secure Gateway - VMware Horizon View Blast Secure Gateway (so much for shortnames vmware!)

There’s lots of room for improvement, any suggestions/ammendments would be appreciated. It has been tested on View 6 security servers.

Probably need to check dependencies for certain services like windows firewall and framework and make it restart 'failed' NLB nodes automatically.

Cheers!

USB camera device not working properly in View 5.3

Hello Everybody,

we have a problem with an USB-device. Our environment:

-Horizon View 5.3

-Media Redirection allowed on the pool

-USB open for any media

-Cloned Desktop Pools (Win7)

We are able to connect the USB-camera (LogiLink UA0072A USB 2.0 WebCam) and Windows 7 recognises it as a USB 2.0 camera device.

The device ist just needed for the snapshot function to take portrait pictures.

In the VideoLAN Media Player 2.1.5 we are just able to start a stream that is 160x120 pixels big. In the cameras reference Software 'VideoPower' we are able to take snapshots, but just based on a black screen. At the moment we are not able to see what we are actually taking a snapshot of. The snapshot image itself is ok, the file resides in the defined folder and has the quality that we want.

What we are missing at the moment is the stream/preview of the object that we want a picture of.

Thank you in advance for any help!

New Desktop Pool Agent Unreachable

Im pretty new to the whole PCoIP setup but i got one desktop pool of 9 computers working just fine now, i went to add 2 more machines to a different desktop pool because these 2 will not be recomposed ever..

I cloned my template from the other desktop pool and i already have a vm setup on another server that i moved to my PCoIP server, then started a new desktop pool and added them and now the cloned vm will not let me connect from any view device.

The cloned one says under the view administrator agent version unknown and status agent unreachable, and if i open the view client it says "the assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. please try connecting to this desktop again later or contact your system administrator"

Any ideas?

Windows 7 - VDI 8K Allocation

EMC has a whitepaper (page 14) saying they noticed increased VDI performance when installing Windows 7 to partition with 8K allocation. I can't find this referenced or recommended on any official VMware docs. Do any of you do this?
