Horizon Client Freezes for 3-5 Seconds Randomly

Hello Everyone,

I have been chasing a ghost in my VDI environment for a while now with no success. All of our VDI users (myself included) experience a weird freezing event with our desktops that will happen randomly. The desktop could go days without a freeze, and then do it 3 times in the same day. When the desktop does freeze, I can still move the mouse around but I can not click on anything. Once the desktop unfreezes, it registers all the move clicks and button presses that occurred while it was frozen and performs them all at once. It is very similar to the way a PC acts when its memory is over consumed.

Here are my troubleshooting steps so far:

  1. Since I am able to move the mouse around, that led me to believe it was a problem with the client so I had my users write down the time when the machine froze. With those times, I scanned through all the VDM logs on the physical PC for any logged event at those times. I could not find anything. I even checked the agent logs during those time periods and still found nothing logged.
  2. I called VMware support and had a tech remote into my system. I gave him the time periods of the freeze events that occurred that day and he could not find anything in the logs. He also checked the Connection server for PCOIP drops but could not find anything. I was informed that there was no evidence to declare the problem VMware related.
  3. I installed and configured vRealize for Horizon and monitored PCOIP traffic and bandwidth. Both look good. I noticed that vRealize is claiming that the VDI desktops are over consuming memory. they are running on 4GB and claim they are using all 4GB. However, task manager on the VM's themselves report that average consumption is 2GB. (This may be unrelated but thought I would mention it)
  4. Thinking that the VM's needed more processors and memory, I upgraded the VM's to 5GB ram and 4vcpu's (which is over kill for our usage). 4 hours after the recompose with new hardware specs, I experienced another freeze. I immediately looked at the memory usage trace I had running for this machine and it was holding steady at 2GB.

We are using the latest of everything for software. 5.5 for hosts, vcenter and vsphere. Also running Horizon with view 6.0.1.

Any ideas in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated!

Horizon View 6.0.1 Connection server certificate replacement

I installed the new VMware horizon View 6.0.1.

On the connection server normally you can replace the standard certificate with a custom certificate.

Normally the only thing we need to do is change the friendly name to vdm and restart the services.

I did this and when starting the VMware Horizon View Blast Secure Gateway service I get an error.

Windows could not start the VMware Horizon Blast Secure Gateway service on Local Computer.

In the absg.log I see following message: keystoreutil.exe failed to load certificate from  [ 'windows-local-machine', 'MY', 'vdm' ] 1 Failed to acquire private key handle (error 2148073492)

Has someone seen this before?

View Client allow login with expired password

Hi ,

One of our users changed his Windows password through the VMware view client . After few minutes he logs off and logs back in with the old password and view client allowed him to log back in .

But though he was allowed to log in when he got connected tot he desktop " Incorrect username password please enter the appropriate credentials" . Is there a way we can avoid this ?

We are using Horizon View 6 with Wyse D90D7 Windows embedded clients.

Horizon View Client version 3.1

Hi all,

We have a production VDI with the following configuration:

1- Dedicated pool, static assigned users and PCoIP Zero Clients (hardware), configured in kiok mode (using custom-users).

2- Pool configuration is: always powered, user cannot reset the VM and change the protocol, never logoff.

     3- 10 Win7 32bits and 5 WinXP 32bits VMs.

     4- ESXi /VCenter 5.1 and View 5.2.

In some cases the zero client disconnects, pressing the button or when losing the network connection. Then never achieve a connection to VM again.

Zero Client or View Client (software client) reports this error:

The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator

The status on the VM in the View Panel is Disconnected or Available, VCenter not show errors or events, the machine is ON and console access is OK.

The only way to solve the problem is resetting the VM. This action indicate that the problem is in the View Agent, not in the View Server (broker).

The problem occurs randomly, when you reset the VM, all works fine. You can connect and disconnect the zero client many times without problems. In some moment zero client cannot obtain a connection anymore.

We cannot reproduce the problem with software client "View Client", this is the reason that VMware support said that the problem is in Zero Clients. Is not totally true because

the testing with software client is not the same environment of hardware client. We have connected some USB sticks (hardware licenses) on hardware client. I'm not sure is it change something.

We checked all the logs files from broker and agent, and we saw nothing strange.

I think that View Agent have some problem, we need to know how we can check the availability of agent ? anyone has had the same problem ?

Thanks in advance, regards

Alejandro

Hi,

how to install a separte Security Gateway Server only for Blast? Now I have one security server with pcoip and want blast (Version View6.02) on a other separate server because the firewall rules. The blast port must be 443 and not 8443. How is the setup for only blast? I don't want a mismatch on the existing security server.

Thanks for your help!!!

Printer redirection on Remote Desktop/Terminal Server question

Hi

This is the scenario: User using a thin client > connect to MS RDS TS server (connected to network printers) > Launch VMware View client > View Desktop  (network printer not mapped)

Is there a way to enable these same network printers to show up on the View Desktop?

If I connect to the ViewDesktopfrom a laptop/desktop network printers show up fine.

I believe this is an issue with Terminal Services and View.

Anyone has a solution for this please?

Upgrade to Horizon View 6.0

Does anyone know if I can continue to use View Agent 5.3 after upgrading View components to 6.0?

If not, are there any recommendations for upgrading the agents on all of the desktops? I can use Microsoft System Center, which we use to distribute software, etc., now. If I have to upgrade the agents, does this require VM Tools reinstall as well?

All of my vDesktops are full, dedicated machines (not, linked clones or view composer machines).

Security Gateway user login report

I am wanting to have a report emailed weekly that will give me a list of all the users that logged into View 6 via our Security Gateway server instead of internally. We want to be able to keep track of who has logged into the workstations from home/out of the office. Is this possible? Thanks!

View Horizon 5.3 and having issues with MultiMonitor displays

We are on View Horizon 5.3 and using Linked Clones. When I first setup the template and generated some test machines I was able to using MultiMonitor and the Windows would snap to fit the size of the monitor window instead of spreading across the dual monitors and seeing the VMWare session as 1 large monitor. I am not sure why this changed any suggestions on restoring this functionality for my linked clones would be appreciated. VAscher

After Disabling Automatic Assignment on Pools Error received

Hi all,

I am having an issue where we already have several pools set up and the decision has been made to have a user specific to one VM.  So in each pool I have gone to edit and unchecked the box for automatic assigned.  I have recomposed the pools but every once and awhile I have a user call in saying that they receive a message saying that they don't have an assigned desktop.  I look in Horizon View 5.3.2 and we have manually assigned them a desktop already.  So my question is what is causing this issue and has anyone else seen this?

VMware Blast within VMware Horizon View 5.3(1) trough port 443 instead of port 8443 because of security policy within the Financial Services segment

$

Still i would like to know if there's a decent way to configure the HTML 5 acces (blast) on port 443 instead of port 8443 because of the fact our customers in the finance branch are highly secured, and there's no possibility to use the 8443 port for connections outside to our clients Horizon View solution?

- figured out there are some 'solutions' with a sort of reverse proxy configuration, but the won't work (tried pfSense, IIS7, TMG reverse-proxy, all with URL rewrite methodes)

Very little information within VMware explaining the proces of this Blast 'reverse-proxy' service, where i should be possible to run a secondary security-server for the use off VMware Blast service on port 443? VMware does describe this 'problem' but only gives some solution to change the port 8443 to p.e. 9443, which isn't an option in this particular case.

Maybe someone out here knows better (i hope......) and got some explanations?

thanks in advance!!

PCoIP error

Hi everybody,

we're having a strange issue.

VmWare View 5.3.3, 2 connection servers + 1 more CS paired with a security gateway, 16 pools and 96 clients (both full and linked).

I have an issue with only 1 user: everytime he tries to connect to his virtual client, he receives (in random order):

- connection timed out

- display protocol is currently not available

- the connection to the remote computer ended

At the fourth try he finally manages to connect.

In the View Manager the VM is always showed as Available.

I tried to analyze the issue and:

- everytime he tries to connect the VM shows a high cpu usage, which goes back to normal values as soon as the connection is successful

- i dig into logs and found:

Network Latency after Recomposing

Hello all.

We are currently running View 5.2.0 and will be upgrading to 5.3.2 this weekend.   We have 250 32-bit Windows 7 VM's on our network divided up into 8 pools all being linked persistent clones using Persona Management.  This being said, we have a huge network latency issue when users login the next day after a company-wide recompose of all vm's.  The latency starts when everyone logs into their vm's at the same time around 9:00am and the issue finally subsides about 1 1/2 - 2 hours later.  I'm pretty sure this is due to the fact that everyone is creating a new local profile on every VM at the same exact time putting a lot of stress on the DC's to get profile information.  How does everyone get around this issue? The only way I have been able to get around this is to only recompose groups of 30-40 VM's in one night and this is fine until we come across a major upgrade like the one I will be performing this weekend.

A little side question:  Is it "OK" to upgrade to View 5.3.2 and have a View Agent of 5.3.0? Only ask because I would like to slowly recompose all machines unless I can get the issue above fixed in time.

Persona Management Issues...Lots of them

So we have had quite a few problems since we implemented Persona Management.  Currently I am running View 5.3.2 with over 250 non-persistent linked clones and utilizing persona management which took over my existing roaming profiles.  I am not doing any folder redirected within the persona policy and I do not roam the .ost within persona.

  1. My first issue is the biggest issue.  Ever since we implemented persona we have had non stop issues with Internet explorer crashing and displaying a white screen that does not populate the Web bar.  Users will be fine one second then the next they'll close out IE and go back then IE no longer works.  While IE is down I am unable to delete the cookies, cache, history, etc.  It says its deleting but it never actually does so, I have waited upwards to 20 minutes with no success.  Logging off the user and logging them back in sometimes works but very rarely.  The only way I have been able to "fix" the issue is to log them off, move them to a different desktop, and then log them back in.  Over the past weeks I have been getting a dozen users or more a day having this problem and its starting to get the managing partners upset.  I have had a ticket open with VMWare since Late December and they are scratching there heads with no answers.  One thing they told me that "could" be the problem is that the persona folders on my fileshare server does not have "Creator Owner" permissions.  I have had the same permissions for roaming profiles for the last 6 years and had no issues until persona was put in action so I am hesitant to changing any permissions on the folders.  They have collected windows logs and persona logs but still cannot get to the bottom of it.  One thing that does seem to prevent the issue is to restart all vm's at night and usually the next day I will only have 1 or 2 users with internet issues.  Some users stay logged in for a day or 2 which may cause some issues so I am working on an "idle log off" policy.
  2. Users deleted desktop icons keep coming back and when they come back, documents are corrupted.  This has been going on for a while but I have yet to put in a ticket with vmware as I am trying to get the biggest issue above fixed first.  Users will delete some desktop icons and then when they log off and back on, the  icons will repopulate.  I am not sure if this is a Windows 7 issue or a persona issue.  We went from Windows XP fat clients straight to Windows 7 thin clients so it is hard to tell.

External Access Policy

Hi,

I am currently doing a POC for VMware View to replace an existing Citrix infrastructure. The company has a policy where by when the system is accessed from outside the company network, no data can be removed. This means disabling Copy and Paste (clipboard going outside the VDI session), USB redirection, Printer redirection, etc. When the user is internal to the company network, some USB devices should be allowed, printer redirection needs to be turned on and copy and paste needs to work. This is currently set up in Citrix with policies that different depending on if the user session is coming through the Citrix Access Gateway or not.

I cannot seem to find a way to implement this with View. I have seen both the GPO policies and the Pool policy settings, but cannot figure out how to change them dependent on the Client environment. Ideally this would be determined by if the user was coming through a Security server or not (or, as they are paired, a connection server). Maybe using the tags?

All connections to the pool would be over PCoIP. There are two internal connection servers and two external connection / security server pairs, both load balanced. Security servers are located in a DMZ.

Help much appreciated, as this could be a show stopper for the View project.

Thanks,

Chris

View 6.01 - Mac Client - You are not entitled to use this system

Hi All,

Running a View 6.01 (test) environment with two hosts, one the Connection Server and One RDS host.

Its a published app only. One App only.

All configured and licensed. Local access at the office works fine both on the Windows and Mac client..

When connect to environment remotely (via an sslvpn which has full access to internal LAN) I experience the following error:

MAC Client - You are not entitled to use the system. (see screenshot)

The Windows client works as fine.

Its just the MAC client causing the error. Mac OS is Yosemite 10.10.3 and the Mac Client 2.3 (1551379)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
