View 5.2 and Mac keyboard mappings issue

$

0

I`ve run view 5.2 as a pilot for a while now, and alot of our users are using Mac as the client to connect to our Win7 View desktops.

Previously we were using an old Citrix solution, and here we had no complaints about the keyboard settings on the Mac.

I.E when the users click the @ button on a Mac, they simply get a ' within the view desktop. Instead they have to use CTRL+ALT+2, and they are not to happy about this.

I`ve been trying a couple of things, and had some success earlier today when I installed the bootcamp software on a view desktop.

After this, it is possible to change the keyboard layout from norwegian to norwegian(apple).

However, if the same user would then connect from a windows machine, it would bug the other way around, and the user would have to change the keyboard layout manually (which is frankly not ideal).

Has anyone else got any ideas / experiences with the mac keyboard mapings on Win7 desktops? I`m guessing it`s not possible to detect what kind of client the users is connecting from, and then set the keyboard layout?

If it works in a citrix environment that`s about 7 years old, we gotta make it work here as well!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How to migrate VDI pools to new cluster?

Currently have ESX and View 5.1 environment.

We have 3 VDI linked clone pools, one pool refreshes after shutdown.

How can we seamlessly move these pools and all the configuration to a new cluster?

I have tried just going into pool settings and change the host and resource pool it uses but then I get a message that base image is not found. I tried migrating base image to new cluster and still no go.

I contacted VMware support, and they seem to be at a loss as well on the best way to do this.

VDI Session Disconnects When Connecting to VPN

I am trying to find out why a VDI session would disconnect when trying to open a VPN session inside the VM. My organization requires us to use two-factor authentication to access certain resources on the network (to include the console feature in vCenter). The solution that we are using is the Juniper Net Connect. Right when the VPN starts to initiate the session is disconnected and the only way to get backin is to reboot the VM. Thoughts?

Microsoft RDS CAL requirement in Horizon View

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand how licensing works when running Horizon View.

It seem to me that I need a Windows Professional license, ie Open License with SA or Windows VDA, the lather seems to expensive dough. But do I also need a RDC CAL for each user? I can not find a direct answer to that question.

Microsoft states that:

"If the solution uses any RDS roles (Remote Desktop Gateway, Remote App, RD Web Access, Remote Web Access, RD connection broker, RD Session Host, RD Virtualization Host, or RemoteFX), then an RDS CAL is required."

Where do I find information to if any RDS Services is used in Horizon Vew to deliver virtual desktops? The web has all sorts of qualified/unqualified answers and guessing's, I am in the search for the correct one now because this has been bugging me for some time now .

It would be nice if VMware could supply this information and clarify what licenses is required from Microsoft.

Thanks in advance!

Vmware View 5.2 ESX host in maintanence mode not shown in dashboard

Hello,

I'm currently installing a VMWare View Horizon environment with automated floating linked clone pools on two clusters of each 8 ESX hosts. The pools are deployed on local SSD disks on the hosts.

When one of the hosts is in maintenance mode, we are unable to edit the pools that are also depolyed to this host/local datastore: I receive a popup with the following error:

"Internal view composer error. Contact your administrator"

Additionally, the fact that the ESX hosts is in maintenance mode is not reflected in the dashboard in of the VMWare Horizon View Administrator: both the ESX en datastore are marked green.

Thanks for your input !

Change in audio pass-through behaviour between view 5.0 and 5.2

$

Greetings,

We have recently upgraded from View 5.0 to 5.2 and have encountered a frustrating problem with audio pass-through.  We are using Aastra 6725ip voip handsets, tethered via usb, in conjunction with MS Lync 2010. This configuration facilitiated data and authentication integration with the View session, while keeping voice (voip) traffic local to the handet and independat of the View session.

Prior to the upgrade audio passed directly to the local (default) audio device on the client workstation (Windows 7) without incident. Since the upgrade audio no longer plays locally on the client while the Aastra handset is rediected into the View session.  In both scenarios the default audio devices have remained unchanged in both the client and the vm.

I have tried, via Group policy, splitting and excluding the 'audio-out' interface of the handset which does then let audio pass-though to the local audio device as before.  However, this configuration now prevents the handset tethering from working!

It would appear that I am an an impasse, with either no audio, or notethering.  Is there anyone out there who can shed light onto what has changed to that I am able to either restore the orginal functionality we had in 5.0, or alternatively, offer any guidance or assistance on how I can acheive this by other means.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

GPP printers disappear after refresh operation

$

We have VMware View 5.1 and vSphere 5.0 virtual environment with Windows 2008 domain (2003 functional level) and Windows 7 clients. In the beginning network shared printers were added to users' desktop manually. We then migrated to GPP based printer deployment. Definitions in GPO object look like this:
  • remove the printer Printer001 if user doesn't belong to AD group Room001
  • remove the printer Printer002 if user doesn't belong to AD group Room002
  • remove the printer Printer003 if user doesn't belong to AD group Room003
  • etc.
  • add printer Printer001 if user belongs to AD group Room001 (Update action)
  • add printer Printer002 if user belongs to AD group Room002 (Update action)
  • add printer Printer003 if user belongs to AD group Room003 (Update action)
  • etc.

Everything works as it should until we initiate Refresh operation on the linked clone. Test scenario looks like this:

1. Add user to two groups, log out/log in. User gets both of printers and one, the latter one is the default one.

2. Initiate a refresh operation and log to the desktop. Now you see only one printer and even that one it isn't marked as the default one.

3. Log out and back in again and now you'll see both printers properly mapped as they should be.

ThinPrint services are disabled in golden image and Always wait for network setting is enabled.

Has anyone experienced issue like this?

No more space left in the selected datastore.

Hi,

When i try to deploy a new pool i get the following error:

No more space left in the selected datastore to power on VMs. Either free up some space or add another datastore.

I have tried the solutions in issue 2 VMware KB: Calculating Datastore Selection for Linked-Clone Desktops in Horizon View 5.2 without success.

The datastore is 740GB with 470GB free and 5,05TB provisioned. Running the aggressive overcommit profile on all pools.

Am I missing something here with the datastore capacity? With the aggressive profile, shouldn't I get around 10TB of provisioned space?

Force SALSA20 with PCoIP Host Card? Poor performance w/ View Client and PCoIP Host Card

$

I had this working and can't for the life of me remember what I did...  Basically poor performance with a PCoIP host card and View software client.  My setup is Horizon View 5.2 w/o secure PCoIP gateway (so just View Connection server) with a View soft client connecting to a physical workstation with a Tera2 PCoIP Host Card.  It connects fine but no matter what I do the soft client connects at AES128 vs SALSA20.  Does anyone know of a way to force the client to use SALSA instead?  I'm trying to remember what I did to fix this before and I think it was related to encryption, where the AES overhead makes the PCoIP Host Card experience lackluster, with the View soft client.

OS with the PCoIP Host Card:  Win 8.1 Enterprise (maybe win8 is the problem here?)

Thanks in advance.

Limiting number of displays to a dedicated linked clone desktop

$

Is it possible to limit one desktop in a dedicated linked clone pool to just use two displays?

A person with 3 displays on his computer wants to have VDI in multimonitor, but only use two displays for VDI. The third display is for his local computer. When the user connects to the pool, he must choose multi display and when he maximizes the VDI session, it uses all available displays. The pool have been configured with max 4 displays pr desktop.

Editing the max display in the pool is not an option :-)

I have tried editing his virtual computers .vmx file and edited the max display setting to two, but that didn't do the trick... Horizon view overrides this setting.

"Another task in progress" error during View Recompose/Refresh

$

Hi Experts,

I am unable to complete the Recompose task and it halts with the following error in viewcomposer.log. I can resume the task and it will run for some time and report the same error again shortly after recomposing few VMs.

2013-11-15 05:29:40,393 | VC thread | FATAL | CommonLib.VcSubsystem.LroVcTask - Got VcFault: VMware.Sim.CommonLib.Exception.SimVcSubsystemException: Another task is already in progress. ---> System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Another task is already in progress.

When I look at the vSphere client I see that error "Another task is already in progress" is reported for the Reconfigure Virtual Machine task for one of the VMs in the pool. On looking at the hostd.log for the ESXi host is seems that though the VM is powered off for some reason View Composer keeps re-trying to power off the VM which results in error "The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Powered off)."

In the vCenter server logs during the same time stamp a backtrace is reported

VDI Calculator: Hyper Threading and VMs per core questions

$

Hello everyone!

Somebody knows, why VDI Calculator doesn’t include a parameter like this: HyperThreading is Enabled/Disabled?

If it really doesn’t include this, what should I do if my servers has a 2 sockets with 6 cores plus HT enabled? Should I set 12 cores instead a 6 cores?

And what a value a should I select for “VMs per Cores”?

One technical guy told me that value for this option must be a 6. Is it correct?

Thank you very much!

Hello,

I have View 5.2 installed and working great but I can't access my XP linked clones using HTML access

The error I get - An error has occurred: {"code":"ECONNRESET"}

My Win 7 pool is working fine with HTML access.

There are some references on the web saying its a bug in the current version.

Anyone see this before or know of any fix.

Thanks, Joe

Changing password after expiration notice

Running vSphere 5.1.0

View Administrator 5.1
Windows 7 32-bit desktop machines

Wyse P25 zero clients - firmware 4.1.2

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit

Both persistent & non-persistent pools

We have been running into this issue since going into production with our virtual environment (about 6 months now). I have finally documented the process that is causing us trouble. The issue is when a user doesn't change their password before their expiration date, they then become locked out and forced to change their password at log on but the process does not properly work. I went through this process with a test ID I knew was past its expiration. I attempted to log into the zero client and it immediately brought me to the screen with the username already filled in, Domain filled in, and the open fields for Old password: New password: and Confirm new password:. After entering the information I receive an error message stating "unknown user name or bad password", the only option is to click ok. It then brought me back to the screen to create a new password only now that this point the username field was blank and greyed out so I couldn't manually enter it. The user typically doesn't realize it and attempts to enter the old and new passwords again assuming they typed it in wrong the first time. After doing so, I then received the message "authentication can not proceed (missing parameter)" due to the user name filed being blank. Again the only option is to click OK, it then ended the process and brought me back to the first screen for the connection server field. Please see the attached images from documenting the process (forgive the quality, had to take them with my cell phone since there was no where to paste a screenshot) this is all what we have been hearing the users report. The even stranger thing about all of this is that it does infact change the password to what the user typed into the New password fields, but there is nothing hinting at this for the user to know, I only know because I have tested it many times. But usually by the time the user calls me to report their issues they have tried it multiple times and we cannot figure out which password the account is currently set at resulting in myself having to reset their password in Active Directory. *Note that when I choose the option "User must change password at next logon" in AD, this issue does not occur, it is only when the user passes their expiration date.

Available (Task Halted) during Recompose operation

Hi,

It seems everytime I perform a recompose operation on a pool, this error appears with about half (or more) of the desktops.

View Horizon 5.2

Non Persistent Desktops

Windows 7

Delete on Logoff

Basically I update the golden image each week and take a new snapshot.

Each time I recompose with the new snaphot, this always happens. ALWAYS!

Any ideas? One article suggests the composer server is down (VMware KB: If a refresh operation is initialized on a group of linked clones and the View Composer server is down, t…), but it is up and running.

Horizon View Server Error - Cannot connect to vCenter Server

$

Hello,

Looking for some help with an installation I am doing to evaluate VMWare Horizon View.

I have got as far as adding my vCenter server to the VMWare Horizon View Administrator web interface in the server configuration however I cannot get it to connect.

I get 2 slightly different errors depending if I specify the FQDN or IP address for the connection. Using the FQDN the error states:

Server Error - Cannot connect. Review the settings and confirm server and network status.

If I use the IP address the error states:

Server Error - A connection problem occurred between View Connection Server, View Composer, and vCenter Server. Check that all the services are running and the ports and URLs are entered correctly.

(Note I am not using View Composer)

I have checked the usual stuff as per VMware KB: Cannot connect to vCenter Server and from what I can see everything is fine - my View machine can ping the vCenter and the user credentials are correct, just cannot get it to connect through View.

My setup is:

1 x ESXi

1 x vCenter (VMWare linux appliance)

1 x Server 2008 Active Directory and DNS

1 x Server 2008 VMWare View Connection Server

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Phil
