Using a subset of monitors in a multi-monitor configuration?

$

Hello all,

I was hoping someone might be able to offer some guidance regarding a particular limitation we've been facing. As most of you know, the default options within the View Client are: All Monitors, Fullscreen, Window-Large, Window-Small, or Custom (which is limited to the max resolution of one monitor on the client system). Our issue is that we wish to use only two of the monitors on the client system when there are three or four monitors connected in total. Our VDI infrastructure is being used for development within our segregated "test" domains, and they need at least one monitor to be usable for production work (email, IM, RDP to prod servers, etc.). Below are the options we've already tried, which all leave a lot to be desired still. All tests below are done using a Windows 7 client desktop with three 23" monitors. Connected to a Windows 7 VDI running View Agent 7.0.2 and using View Client version 4.2.0.

     1. Setting View Client to open virtual session using "Window-Large" display setting, and then manually stretching the window across two of the three/four monitors on the client system. At best, this is the only solution that actually allows us to use a subset of monitors and the rest still be available for other processes. However, the VDI still sees this as one giant display, meaning all the snap-features and window-resizing within Windows is virtually unusable. Also have to do this every time the session is closed and reopened.

     2. Same as above, but using something like DisplayFusion or Dell Display Manager to artificially split the display. Same problem occurs here, as every time you disconnect the display is reset back to the default "Window-Large" size and wipes all settings for DF or DDM.

     3. Limiting display settings within View Admin to allow a max of two monitors, and using the "All Monitors" display option within the View Client. Even with the pool set to a max of two monitors, selecting the "All Monitors" option within the display options of the View Client causes any monitors past the two monitor limit on the pool to just go completely black. For our usage case, this isn't any better than all monitors being consumed by the VDI.

If anyone has any other solutions they would be greatly appreciated, as this has been a large contingency point for our 600+ developers.

Hanging Application prevents Win7 64 Bit from Shutdown/Reboot and View Agent already terminated by the OS

Dear all

We have ViewAgent 5.3 installed on our virtual Desktops, which is necessary to connect from View Client. Now sometimes a Windows application hangs on OS shutdown/reboot request. Because on requesting a reboot/shutdown Windows send a terminate Signal to all processes it can happen that the View Agent is already stopped when the Application hanging dialog appears on the users Desktop. The virtual Desktop will not shutdown or reboot because there is still the open Dialog asking the user to force the Termination of the application. The ViewAgent is already stopped, so the user can not reconnect to his virtual desktop

How can I make sure that ViewAgent is one of the last processes terminated by Windows, so the can at least see a application hanging Dialog? At the Moment the only Workaround is to connect to the VM console at confirm the application hanging Dialog manually. I could also use "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\AutoEndTask=1" but this Forces the Termination of applications with unsaved documents as well. So I would rather priorize the Termination of the processes during shutdown and would priorize the ViewAgent as lowest.

Any ideas how to achieve this?

Any help appreciated!

Time restricted access

Hi all,

Can anyone think of a way of restricting access on a time basis either to desktop pools or using some sort of from condition? So for example Pool A is only available between the hours or 1800-2300 or Pool A (or all pools) are only available between the same hours remotely.

I can't see a way of doing it myself other than to tag them to one Connection Server and schedule stop and start the services which is pretty lame.

Cheers!

Horizon 7 application pool customize Word/outlook startup

Hi,

i`ve set up a 2012 r2 RDS server that is hosting Office 2013.

Now, we have two add-ins that need to run in Word, and at least one that needs to run in Outlook.

If i run Word on the RDS server, it loads the addins correctly, but when a user tries to access Word, none of the addins are loaded.

Is this were i have to manually input something in the parameters-section of the app?

Or is there another way to do this? I`ve spent a couple hours of googling, but have not come up with anything. And without these addons, Word and Outlook are pretty much useless...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

2nd Domain is red and not searchable

We are merging with a 2nd organization and would like to entitle users to our existing VMware environment.  We can see the domain under Other Components but it's red.  when I click on it, I get the following:

This domain has a two-way trust relationship with the connection servers domain.

Domain status error detected. Domain can not be contacted.

I've tried using vdmadmin controls to add the domain as a searchable domain.  When I do that, it goes green for a few minutes then back to red.  When I try searching that specific domain for users to add, I get teh following:

Monday, October 24, 2016 11:08:44 AM

AD Query: error executing LDAP AD Query. Failed to list users: Could not execute query. Could not bind to LDAP://dc=company2,dc=local

Scanning Redirection not working on Thin client

Using VMware View Agent 6.2 on a Wyse D90Q7 with Horizon client 4.1

TWAIN driver for a fi-5015c is installed on the D90Q7 - it is not installed on the guest OS.

Connecting to View desktop using Horizon client via PCOIP.  USB redirection is not occurring.

Scanning Redirection was installed with the view agent.

The scanner shows up in the redirection. When I try to scan from an application, it hangs at 'Scanning' and never does the actual scan.

If I click Cancel it shows 'Waiting for Scanner Response' and I have to force close the app.

Ideas on what might be causing this?

Interaction Horizon client(VDI) and Thinclient(HPt620)

We migrated our desktop enviroment from fat clients to VDI. VDI's are running windows 7 OS
About 450 HP T620 Thinclient with Windows 10 and vMware horizon client running.
We have a few issues like black screens, VDI disconnecting, performance, Keyboard lag..
We have a open case for the black screens with vMware at the moment.
But what i would like to know more about, is the interaction between the VDI and the Thinclient.
We have a third party hosting the VDI environment, another party managing our Thin Clients, and we are in the middle wit all the issues. Politics..

Does the VDI uses date and time of the TC, despite the VDI'a are in a domain with a NPT server.
How about Keyboard and regional settings.
VDI with windows 7 and thinclient wth windows 10, is that "best practice"

I'm lookng for some "best practice" documentation/articles about running VDI on thinclients. How dows it works exactly? Especially redirection.
Thanks

Screen Lock After Inactivity

Hello,

What is the preferred method for locking a session after inactivity? On existing physical PCs, this was done by using the screensaver option or setting in Power Options, both of which are not recommended in virtual environments.

I'm interested in how others are handling this, as we don't want users leaving their machines unlocked when stepping away.

Thanks.

SSL Offloading and Ports

$

I have an environment whereby user Client machine will connect to the Connection Server(CS) thru a Load Balancer(LB)

SSL will be terminated/offload at the LB, therefore the connection from View Client to LB will be HTTPS and the connection from LB to CS will be HTTP

No Security Server setup as this is for internal connection

On the Connection Server:

- Configured both Connection Server 1 and Connection Server 2 to accept http traffic by creating the locked.properties files (KB 2146314)

serverProtocol=http

- Configure HTTPS secure tunnel URL : lb.example.com:443 (to point to my LB)

Ports required:

From Client Machine to LB : port 443(HTTPS), 4172(PCOIP), 8443(Blast), 3389(MMR)

From LB to Connection Server : port 80(HTTP), 4172(PCOIP), 8443(Blast), 3389(MMR)

I am able to connect to my View remote desktop using PCOIP or Blast display protocol BUT NOT with RDP display protocol.

I get the error : "The connection to the remote computer ended" (after I selected the Desktop Pool)

Do I need to allow port 443 (from LB to Connection Server) if SSL is offloaded to LB?

Hope anyone with the same scenario can share the configuration steps. Thanks!

Anonymous LDAP Binds on View Connection Server

We recently went through a security audit and one of the findings was the fact that our connection servers support anonymous LDAP binding.  A couple of questions:

  1. What sort of information could be gained by exploiting this?
  2. Is there a way to disable anonymous binding?
  3. Is this something to be overly concerned with?

Thanks

VMware Horizon View Client URI's

$

Hello,

I am trying to figure out the appropriate way to bypass SSL checking or to set a URI to "Not warn when connecting to an unsecure connection", as the previous client would put it.

The URI is pointing to the server address with port 80 set, however for some reason it refuses to connect and just keeps giving an error: Error: An SSL error occurred. Usually this happens because it can't verify a certificate through the internet and will refuse to connect. However, on some of our other thin clients, we have it so that there is a connection point on the desktop it set to not to warn, and don't ping. Doing this on WES7, I figured I'd create a URI. No dice.

vmware-view://company.com:80/?desktopProtocol=PCOIP&desktopLayout=multimonitor&domainName=company

The above is the URI. Not sure what I'm supposed to do to fix this without using a proxy. It's been done connecting to this server. I just can't get it to work this way.

Thank you.

VMware Horizon View - CMID of Instant Clones not changing

$

Hello!

We are testing out Instant Clones with Windows 10.  We had trouble with App Volumes in this particular environment, so we abandoned that for this deployment.  We have very few Windows 10 machines in our environment, so when the gold image tries to activate it cannot because there are < 25 machines.  I tried turning up 30 Instant Clones but the CMIDs were all the same, so none of them activated.  I tried doing slmgr / rearm on the gold image, shutting it down, taking a snapshot, and then starting 30 machines, but they all had the same CMID.

When should the CMID get changed when using Instant Clones?

Thanks for any help!

Linked clones are falling randomly to an agent unreachable state. those VM's VMTool's status in the ESX became 'Not Running" and those VMs are frozen (not able to access the desktop using console).

tried many troubleshooting including the following:

* made sure ADAM replication is correct between connection servers.

* Set Sleep, Turn off harddisk to NEVER

* Disabled Hibernate

* Allowed port 4001 in the windows firewall (as i see that as a solution in another KB article).

i am not able to do any reset/ power off operation from vCenter for these VMs.

VMware Horizon View client and high DPI screens

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has a solution to getting the View client to play nice with high DPI screens, such as those with 3200x1800 screen resolution, or Apple's 2880x1800 screen resolution on the Macbook Retina 15". The View client doesn't seem to scale properly, and the only fix seems to be changing the desktop screen resolution and then logging into view. I don't think this is a very graceful fix, and my user's aren't too happy about it either.

Thanks,

OneDrive for Business and Floating Pools

$

I am trying to figure out how I can use OneDrive for Business in a Floating Pool that refreshes after log off.  We don't want files to sync to the drive due to space restrictions and refreshing of the machine.

We have a link to the user's OneDrive in the cloud and want associates to use that or save to a folder that is redirected.  My problem with that is that the user has to keep logging into OneDrive for the link to work.  They also have to make sure they save it to that folder.

We have two folders that are redirected, but we want users to be in the habit of saving to OneDrive.

We are using UEM and App Volumes.  We are also using the Writeable disk but not the one that retains personal settings.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

VMware Horizon 6.1 and Microsoft One drive for Business Sync

$

One of my clients requires to have Onedrive for Business in a View environment with linked clones. I read about the Onedrive for Business sync client and apparently you can not specify/change the location of the download location.

The customer demands that the Onedrive for Business client is installed and will sync/download the content from Onedrive, but in a linked clone environment this might mean that the sync client will download all content of Onedrive each time a user logs on to a dekstop, which we obviously do not want.

I told the customer that he potentially will have to store 1 TB of data per user in his datacenter, meaning he will need a lot of SAN space, but the customer does not care about this.

Does anybody have any experience with the Onedrive for business sync client in a Linked clone View environment and how to best set this up?

Horizon 7 Instant Clones get trust relationship issue after Recover process

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else getting an error when they recover their instant clones related to AD trust relationship of the instant clones machines.

Full message:

The SAM database on the Windows Server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.

The objects are located in AD and seem to be fine. And the initial deployment of the desktop pool works fine. It is just when I go to recover them that all of the desktops fail.

Additional Information:

1 AppVolume AppStack mounted (ver 2.11)

1 AppVolume Writable mounted no profile template
