View 6 - Add Server 2008 R2 Desktop to pool - "VM with unsupported Guest OS"

$

Hi,

I need to install a new View Connection Server because we upgraded the vCenter Server to 5.5 and View does not allow the migration to a new vCenter Server.

So my plan is to "unplug" all desktops from the old View Connection Server (if necessary) and add them to the new View Connection Server.

We use some Server 2008 R2 desktops but if I try to add them to the inventory View tells me "VM with unsupported Guest OS".

How can I add them to the pool / inventory?

Internal Certificate Gone Bad

Things were moving along quite nicely until i did a windows update on my connection server.  After a reboot of teh connection server now my internal CERT doesn't work.  I see the valid certs located on teh server but all internal view desktops are getting the cert error when they connect.  Not sure what to do at this point since nothing has changed but the windows updates.  At this point in the day i am unable to restart the server so getting a new cert would be the easiest way to get things going.  i believe that teh internal users were using the same server address as the external users.  Any help is appreciated

Just curious if there is a way to change the connection server name in the client to a friendly name.  We are setting up internal and external connections for users and would like the names to be a bit more friendly.  Any thoughts??  thanks

View instalation error

hello,

during the installation of the view composer we keep getting the error like you can see in the attachments.
we rechecked all settings of the dsn. like you can see as well in the attachment the connection works and didn't give a error.

the only thing we didn't do yet is completely reinstall the server, what we rather wouldn't do.
Anybody what the reason for this error can be or how it can be solved?

Windows 8.1 Black Screens on Login

I have a Windows 8.1 linked clone pool on Horizon View 6.0 that is giving me a black screen with cursor after a very long delay on login. I've tried multiple configurations on the vid card settings and different versions of the view Agent (6 and 5.3) I have run the optimization scripts. Looking for ideas as to why I'm seeing this. My endpoints range from view 3 client on a windows 7 desktop to XP Thin clients with 5.2 client and Wyse Tera2 zero clients and all perform the same.

I have also been able to repeat the behavior with a console connection through vSphere which sort of rules out PCOIP issues. It seems to be a Windows issue but It never happens on the gold image.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.I'm stumped right now.

Thanks,

VMware View Agent Direct-Connection Plugin and Blast

Hello,

Does the Direct-Connection plugin allow direct HTML5 access direct to the virtual desktop?

From https://www.vmware.com/pdf/horizon-view/horizon-view-agent-53-direct-connection-plugin-administration.pdf p5:

With VMware Horizon View Agent Direct-Connection Plugin running on a virtual desktop, the client can

connect directly to the virtual desktop. All the View desktop features of PCoIP, HTML5 Access, RDP, USB

redirection, and session management work in the same way, as if the user had connected through View

Connection Server.

Thanks,

Joe

Not seeing any of the win7 VMs when creating a pool

We are seeing a strange problem trying to create a pool of VMs in View 5.3.

We created a Win7 VM from scratch in vCenter and added the agent then took a snapshot.

We start the View Administrator Select  add,

Then follow through the menus…

Automated, Dedicated, Desktop from vCenter,,, Give the Pool ID set Pool settings,.

At the Add vCenter VMs screen, we do not see the new Win7 VM in the display.

Tried a few times and still the VM does not appear, no error is shown,,

Any ideas

thanks

View Client as Shell on ThinPC > ScreenSaver Help

$

Hi All,

We are re-purposing our desktops using ThinPC and ran into an issue with the ScreenSaver on the Host OS.  We've configured ThinPC to auto login using the "User" account.  Once logged in the Vmware View Client is set as the shell which also auto logs into a view session.  The ThinPC ScreenSaver is set as a picture slideshow which launches successfully when idle, but closes immediately and you are returned back to your virtual desktop. We noticed that this only happens if we have the :start and goto start in the .cmd file we have configured.  Any ideas as to what might be causing the screen saver to close instantly?  Any thoughts on a better approach?   (note: the net use command gains us access to the a share since our ThinPC systems are non-domained)

Here is our configuration.

cd "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Client\bin"

net use \\Server\share\share1 Password1 /USER:domainname\%computername%

:start

wswc.exe -userName %COMPUTERNAME% -domainName domainname -password Password1 -unattended -serverURL Connectionservername

goto start

rds pools question

i have deployed an RDS pool ( 3 host RDS farm using connection broker).

when connecting to the pool often i am finding the view agent will not connect because the user account already has a session connected. (either left disconnected or idle or locked)

how can i control the sessions so that they disconnect and log them self off after a period of time for example 5 minutes also so that they don't get stuck in locked status.

thanks

VIEW COMPOSER CONNECTION ERROR

Hi, I have set up a View 5.3.2 environment and everything is configured on the domain. However after adding VCenter to the Connection Server I can't seem to add Composer.

I'm getting the error "A connection problem occurred between View Connection Server, View Composer , and vCenter Server".

I have attached a few screen shots for back up.

Any help on this would be great.

Linked clone desktops slow on new connection

$

Hello.

I'm experiencing some strange (to me at least) behaviour when connecting to my virtual desktops (linked clones) over PCoIP.

Whenever I open a new connection (using Dell Wyse P25 zero clients, latest firmware), fast movements inside the desktop appear somewhat jerky/laggy. For instance, dragging around windows shows noticeable jerkiness.

However, if I keep dragging windows around for a while (like 10 seconds or so, I haven't actually timed it), the jerkiness disappears and fast movements become way more fluid than before (the way it's supposed to be).

As far as I could tell, once the desktop is "fluid", it will stay that way - UNLESS you disconnect the session and reopen it (same session, no logoff required) - then the jerkiness will return.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? To me it sounds like there's some kind of power management going on, but I've already disabled power management policies on every level I can think of: on the physical servers, in ESXi and the guest OS (Win 7 x64).

Some more details on my setup:

  • ESXi 5.5.0, 1623387
  • Horizon View 5.3
  • HP Gen8 blade servers w/ 2 x 10 core Xeon E5 each
  • VMs have 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM, running Windows 7 Professional SP1
  • 3D rendering enabled

Also, there's virtually no load on the ESXi hosts at the moment, as this is pretty much just a lab environment right now.

Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

Thanks!

Dan

View 5.2 linked clone pool errors: "...desktop source is currently disabled..." and "...desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy..."

Because we are using Persona Management, we choose to use 1 pool entitlement and 1 session per user. We also refresh on logoff. This prevents persona management from failing on a second session if the first isn't logged off yet. Unfortunately, if a user logs off and tries to immediately log back in, they get the following two error messages:

The View agent reports that this desktop source is currently disabled. Please contact your system administrator.png

All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator.png

I assume that this is because the computer is still logging them off, persona management is still syncing their profile and or the broker is trying to connect them to the machine that is being refreshed and isnt aware yet of the users logoff.

Regardless of the reason, isn't there a more graceful way to notify the user that they need to wait or couldn't the view client report when the computer is done logging off? Nobody wants to see these red bars and it shines badly on IT.

How to move dedicated assignment persistent disk vdi pool in View 5.2 from ESXi 5.1 Cluster to ESXi 5.5 Cluster

Hello,

I am pretty new to administering VMware View so bear with me.  I am looking to move a dedicated assignment, automated pool (linked clone) from an ESXi 5.1 cluster to a 5.5 cluster while maintaining all user to vm assignments.  These VMs also have persistent disks.  How can I accomplish this task?  Thank you.

I am looking for the "VDM Load Balancing Guide"

Group policy "applied" but not making any settings until running a GPUPDATE /force

$

Hi folks.

We have a strange problem with our linked clone desktops.

The pool builds the desktop and registers with AD correctly using QuickPrep. When a user logs in, settings that the group policy would normally apply are not apparently working.

However, the GPRESULT /R command shows all policies correctly! All policies appear to be getting applied.

But when doing a RSOP.MSC, none of the settings can be seen.

As soon as I do a GPUPDATE /FORCE, the policy starts working:

  • Desired effects are immediately seen on the desktop (i.e. one setting is to hide the C drive in explorer).
  • RSOP.MSC now shows the settings that were previously missing.
  • GPRESULT /R shows no difference.

We are running the following:

  • VMware View 5.2
  • Non-Persistent Desktops - destroyed on logout.
  • Windows 7
  • OU has inheritance blocked, and settings are not set anywhere else (i.e. not conflicting settings).

It appears that if an available desktop is left long enough for the group policy refresh to occur before a user logs in, then all works correctly. It's just like the policy is not working correctly before a normal refresh (whether forced or timed).

Any advice?

Network Latency after Recomposing

$

Hello all.

We are currently running View 5.2.0 and will be upgrading to 5.3.2 this weekend.   We have 250 32-bit Windows 7 VM's on our network divided up into 8 pools all being linked persistent clones using Persona Management.  This being said, we have a huge network latency issue when users login the next day after a company-wide recompose of all vm's.  The latency starts when everyone logs into their vm's at the same time around 9:00am and the issue finally subsides about 1 1/2 - 2 hours later.  I'm pretty sure this is due to the fact that everyone is creating a new local profile on every VM at the same exact time putting a lot of stress on the DC's to get profile information.  How does everyone get around this issue? The only way I have been able to get around this is to only recompose groups of 30-40 VM's in one night and this is fine until we come across a major upgrade like the one I will be performing this weekend.

A little side question:  Is it "OK" to upgrade to View 5.3.2 and have a View Agent of 5.3.0? Only ask because I would like to slowly recompose all machines unless I can get the issue above fixed in time.

VMWare Blast - Web browsing - required ports and protocols to be open on firewalls

$

Good Afternoon,

I have been asked to gain access using my web browser to a virtual desktop through VMWare Blast. (Apologies its very vague)

I require to get through two firewalls, I would be very grateful if someone could assist me by advising me what ports and protocols I require to get opened on the firewalls.

I have upgraded my web browser to IE10.

Are there any other actions that are required other than a HTML5 web browser and firewall exceptions?

Do I have to put a port number at the end of my URL when browsing to virtual desktop?

Thank you for your time.
