Multiple Master Images/Snapshots

I tried doing some searching and could not find a discussion with the details I was looking for.  If this has been brought up previously, I apologize.

I work for an institution where I'm in charge of their VMware View infrastructure and deployment.  We've been using View for about 2 years now and have about 250 stations using our View environment, with more on the horizon (no pun intended?). Over these last couple years, I've realized that I'll need multiple pools to support our environment. Since different areas have different software requirements, we either need to install ALL of our software (that cannot be put into a ThinApp package, which unfortunately is a sizable number) into a single image, or create multiple images with software specialization (such as an Engineering image with AutoCAD, and a Trades image with software related to trades, etc.).  In addition, we're in the process of expanding our environment for an administrative rollout, which will require a complete different set of software.

I know I'm not alone with this type of configuration and I'm curious how you handle these types of situations. Do you have multiple master images that you use, or maybe you use a single master image with a series of snapshots? Or, perhaps you've come up with a new and creative way to address this scenario.

Currently, I have a single master image that has a tiered set of snapshots, which looks something like this:

Base Snapshot (Windows installed, updated with BIOS and VM settings configured and no additional software installed)

     - Engineering Snapshot (no changes in this snapshot, I just use it to create a visual separation in the snapshot manager)

          - Configured Snapshot (This has all of the engineering software installed and configured.  This is where I would return if I needed to do windows updates

               - Ready for View (This is the snapshot that I use to create the pool with in VMware View)

     - Trades snapshot

          - Configured Snapshot

               - Ready for View

This should give you an idea of how it's laid out. Although this has worked so far, I'm not certain if it's the best approach. It does help with space savings, instead of creating multiple VMs for each configuration.  I'm not sure how this will continue to work as our environment grows, so I figured I would be proactive and explore other means of handling multiple gold or master images without taking up crazy amounts of space.

View 5.1.1 Login Latency Issue

Guys/Gals,

I'm working with a customer remotely and they are having latency issues with Win 7 desktop upon login (30-60 seconds) throughout the day (it's a school)

vSphere 5

View 5.1.1

Linked Clones

9 Desktop Pools - 8 floating has disposable disk, 1 persistent (replicas, clones, each for student/teachers etc...)

Local Profiles

Floating has immediate 'refresh'

Dell 6110 SAN

Set for auto-tier howver it only shows 1 volume of RAID 6 accelerated (not a storage guy so not sure if this is correct, wondering if it should have volumes on each of the RAIDS or if it will distribute when necessary) either way the array appears to be without errors/warnings

5 ESXi host

32 logical CPU

256GB RAM

10GB iSCSI

They all tend to get up to around 70% RAM utilization however no balloning or swapping is occuring.

Streaming Apps w/thinapp repository

I've attached a screenshot of disk performance counters.

Hardware guys are saying its vmware view/vsphere config - customer is pointing the finger at storage.

Everything I've looked at appears to be within range but I cannot find specifics on this performance counter attached.

Thoughts?

Horizon View 5.2 3d Hardware GPU Offload

** Quick Rant **

I have to say I am terribly disappointed as to how View 5.2 has been released.  Nothing seems to be available for useful documentation and/or tutorials on what is available.  It seems as though half of the bits have been thrown up on the site for public consumption and the documentation that is available leads to no where

** End Rant **

The documentation that is available for 3d says...

http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.view.integration.doc%2Fview_integration_preface.html

#To support hardware-based 3D rendering, a pool must meet these additional requirements:

#

##The desktops must run on ESXi 5.1 or later hosts and be managed by vCenter Server 5.1 or later software

##GPU graphics cards and the associated vSphere Installation Bundles (VIBs) must be installed on the ESXi hosts. For a list of supported GPU hardware, see the VMware Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php.

Where does one obtain said VIB for NVIDIA Quadro support?  After I install the VIB will 3d hardware magically work?  How does one know that a view session is actually using hardware vs software rendering.  Besides obviously testing an app and seeing improved performence is there a backend command or esxtop value that shows GPU usage?

View 5.2 and Lync 2013 VDI Plugin

I have implemented View 5.2 and followed all instructions from Microsoft on implementing the lync 2013 vdi plugin, however I am not having any luck with the lync client seeing the vdi plugin on the thinclient's os.  I also can't find any instructions on implementation from VMware on this, anyone have any luck doing this?

Directions from MS:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204683(v=ocs.15)

I have also read the following:

http://itbloodpressure.com/2013/03/01/horizon-view-5-2-lync-2013-support-are-you-covered/

I have installed the ssl cert and confirmed that EnableMediaRedirection is enabled for all users.

Load Balance Among View Pools?

I am designing a rather large VDI deployment and will likely exceed the limit of #vms / pool (I believe that is a 1000).  I am entitling all users for this pool, likely more than 10k.  Given that the domain I am working in does not break these users up for the purposes of entitement, how should I go about configuring view with multiple pools?  I don't want the users to see pool A, B, C, etc.  I rather than them automatically assigned to a VM in an automatic floating pool, one of 10 I believe I will need to make this work.  I don't expect to ever have that many concurrent users, but certainly more than 1000.  Thoughts, suggestions?

Confirm Parent Snapshot

Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to script the confirmation that all of my View 4.5 Linked Clones are running on the correct parent snapshot. Where I'm finding this difficult is that the Get-Pool cmdlet shows me what I need, but the Get-DesktopVM cmdlet does not. How can I verify at an individual VM levelthat the Desktop has been Recomposed to the correct snapshot?

Get-Pool returns values for:

parentVMPath =

parentVMSnapshotPath =

Get-DesktopVM does not contain either.

Thanks!

View smartcard logon - Failed to convert SID

I am unable to authenticate using a smartcard from the view client.

Error Log 1 (View server):

Unable to extract User Principal Name: Unknown type 22, remaining......

..........................................

Failed to convert SID (null)

Unable to obtain user information from the Active Directory

Error instantiating PAEContext for : com.vmware.vdi.ob.lib.b: Failed to retrieve user information for the users with given upns: Unable to obtain information from the Active Directory - ErrorCode 1

Error Log 2 (View server):

No SubjectAlternativeName found

Failed to convert SID

Unable to obtain user information from the Active Directory

Error  instantiating PAEContext for : com.vmware.vdi.ob.lib.b: Failed to  retrieve user information for the users with given upns: Unable to  obtain information from the Active Directory - ErrorCode 1

The logs show the certificate being read by the view server and all the detials of CRLs etc but it appears unable to extract the UPN. Where does it resolve it from?

I read in the admin guide that if the Root CA is in another domain then the user must have the Subject Alt Name of the Root CA cert set as this UPN of their local domain account. I do not understand why this is as the UPN is a vital attribute for many other software products and is usually in the format user@company.com. The error logs above would suggest that the UPN from the user cert can not be decoded and therefore can not be used to resolve the user from the Active Directory.

In the event log on the view server the first event is an informational one stating "No SubjectAlternativeName found" and then the next event is of the type warning and is "Failed to convert SID (null)". Why is the first message Informational when it appears to be part of the problem?

Are there any special rights required by the ws_admin server to convert the SID, or is it because it uses the Subject Alt Name whch should be the user UPN?

Thoroughly confused!

Thanks

View 5.0 Guest Customizaton for AD OU

View 5 Users allocated multiple desktop sessions before finally connecting

Hello All,

We are seing an issue with a non-persistent pool, (our only non-persistent pool) where a user will attempt to connect to a desktop and it will take a significant amount of time before they connect to a desktop.  When looking in the View Administrator, I can see the events in this order:

1.User Username has logged in

2. User Username requested Pool Clinical_Desktop

3. The agent running on machine MACHINENAME1 has accepted an allocated session for user USERNAME

4. The agent running on machine MACHINENAME2 has accepted an allocated session for user USERNAME

5.User Username has logged in to a new session on machine MACHINENAME3

Sometimes there are more accepted sessions, sometimes the user gets right in.

The desktops are Win7 32bit, 2 gig of ram, 1 vCPU.

We ahve 2 security servers, and 2 connection servers, everything goes through our security servers, 2008 R2.  We upgraded to View 5 from 4.6, as this happened in 4.6 and VMWare recommended the upgrade as a fix, so I am a little stumped here. When these situations occur, if a user disconnects from a desktop, they may not reconnect to the same desktop, even though they shoud, the desktop does not log off on disconnect, and there is a 2 hour window before a disconnected session is logged off, so users can end up with in some cases like today, a user had 10 sessions, that isn't helpful when they have to keep logging in.  I've banged my head against the wall and VMWare support hasn't been too helpful so far.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Points will be awarded for a solution!

Thanks much!

Enable host caching not possible

I try to enable Host Caching to try this new feature in View 5.1

But when I go to the settings in the Vmware View Administration console, I see the following error:

Host Caching is unavailable because vSphere 5.0 or higher is required

But all my vSphere hosts are running on vSphere 5.0 update 1 !

Does anyone know what I can do to get this feature enabled ?

View HTML Blast, There is no available gateway for the display protocol

I'm playing around with the new HTML client for Horizon View - but when i connect externally (from Internet) i get this error when I click on my desktop:

Unable to connect to desktop: There is no available gateway for the display protocol. Try again, or contact your administrator if this problem persists.

From "inside" (through view connection server) it works fine - What could be wrong with my Security server (DMZ)?

I have opened port TCP 8443 to Security server (NAT from WAN) - and at this moment all traffic from Security server to connection server and desktops (LAN) is allowed.

View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (Unknown) - Unknown -

I get the following error in View Administrator while deploying around 1500 desktops

View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (Unknown) - Unknown -

I have looked at the logs and they point toward insufficient ports in DVS, I have confirmed that there are more that sufficient ports in the dvSwitch and the dvPortgroup.

Please help me fix this.

Here is the log snip for your reference.

Duplicate folders being created on the datastore with host caching enabled

Upgraded to the following this weekend:
View Connection Server 5.1.2-928164
View Composer 3.0.0-691993
vCenter 5.1.0b-947939
ESXi 5.1.0a-838463

After the upgrade I installed the latest VM tools, View Agent 5.1.2-928164, and the Teradici audio driver on my snapshot.  I have not upgraded the machine hardware version.

I enabled host caching on my pool, and the pool is set to refresh immediately on logoff.  When I shutdown or logoff of the View session I see an error in vCenter like this one:

Reconfigure virtual machine VMPool-3 Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [VM_POOL_LUN-12] VMPool-3/VMPool-3-check-point.vmdk already exists

Then it creates a new folder with an _1 on the datastore because of this:
VMPool-3 (original)
VMPool-3_1 (duplicate)

Once I turn off host caching the problem does not occur.

Has anyone seen this issue?  I currently have a ticket opened with VMware.

Disable domain selection in view client

Hi,

we have installed a multi-tentant installation of vmware view (horizon version 5.2) for multiple customers.

we have connected all domains with a trust to our root cloud domain.

is it possible to disable the domain selection on the view client login screen???

thats very bad because everyone who wants to login can look on the domain selection and could see all domains (and so all other customers who are on the cloud)

Is there a possiblity to disable this selection??

best regards,

VMWare View 5.1 - USB Headset Redirection

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to VMWare View 5.1. We have linked clones running Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit, the virtual machines have 1x vCPU, 2GB RAM and 50GB Thin Provisioned C drives. The full View Agent is installed on the virtual desktops, with the Windows Firewall turned off. The VMWare recommended batch file has been ran to enhance performance.

The client operating system accessing the virtual desktop is Windows XP SP3. We have a problem where we are trying to connect our USB headsets directly to the virtual desktop using the connect usb option within the VM Client Window. The USB headset redirects fine, the guest Windows 7 virtual desktop installs a driver for it and the headset appears as a default audio device. The problem is all audio comming from the virtual machine to the USB headset is static, nothing recognisable. The audio we get does tie in with when we are producing the sound which indicates it is something the virtual machine is generating and not just interference.

We have tried other headsets, exact same problem.

The audio does work fine however when we don't redirect the USB headset to the virtual machine and just allow the client machine to produce the sound as PCOIP audio traffic.

Has anyone else seen this before and does anyone know if VMWare support the redirection of USB headsets?

View, USB bandwidth / VOIP issues

So I just upgraded to 5.2 to see if this would help and it hasnt my problem is this :

I have a View 5.2 environment on top of Vsphere 5.1b enterprise, linked clones all on SSD storage.  I have GPO set to allow basically unlimited audio bandwidth (1600kbs).  I can play music, video files etc and everything streams and sounds fine over my local speakers.  However, if i connect a usb headset (and i've tried 5 different ones) the audio is absolute crap, almost like its playing on 8kb i get little blurps of audio then static then silence.

Ideas/suggestions?  Ultimate goal is to do VOIP (Cisco IP Communicator) inside of View, but I don't need help with the Cisco part, at  this point just getting audio to work over the connected USB would be a huge help.

Can't Accept Default SSL Certificate after Upgraded to vSphere 5.1

In my View Manager when I go to View COnfiguration > Servers and click Edit it asks me to accept the SSL certificate.

If I click Accept I get an error:

Cannot connect to the vCenter Server {0} because the user name or password is not valid.

I'm a bit reluctant to delete the server. When I upgraded to 5.1 I had to create a new SSL certificate for vCenter because it had expired.

I'm a bit stuck because I can't manage my View machines until this certificate is accepted.

Any help appreciated!

Automatic logoff after disconnect does not work in View 5.1

Hi,

I've a problem with "Automatic logoff after disconnect" function in View 5.1

I have 8 floating pool with Refresh Immediately on logoff and the "Automatic logoff after disconnect" set to 120 minutes.

For some business requirement we need to have a global session timeout very high (at least 50000 minutes).

120min after a user leave a sessions disconnected the "Automatic logoff after disconnect" does not logoff the sessions.

Is this a normal behavior? May this problem related to the high session timeout?

Thanks
