How many vCPUs for VDI desktops (is 1 vCPU mantra still valid) ?

$

Hi

almost every single document I read recommends 1 vCPU per VDI desktop, but if I look around everyone has at least two cores in their physical computers (Pentium -> 2C, i3 -> 2C/4T, i5 -> 4C, ... ) and frequencies are usually in rage of 3Ghz and more.

Even the most basic users nowadays run multiple applications simultaneously (core bussiness app(s), brosers(s), MS Office apps,...) and fair share of CPU is also used by PCoIP process itself.

I want to know how many vCPUs do you use in your VDI deployments and what is minimum CPU frequency that is still adequate in case of 1vCPU per desktop.

In our current servers we have Xeon E7-2830 CPUs which run at 2,13Ghz and desktops are painfully slow when configured with 1vCPU. It doesn't matter if there are 10 or 80 VDIs on blade (192GB of RAM and 2 cpu).

I did few tests on the users without telling them anything because I want to know if will they notice any improvements without placebo effect (esxi 5.1, view 5.3, Win7, 2GB of ram).

Test 1:

move all VMs off the host except for group of 10 test users -> I did this several times and users were still complaining

Test 2:

assign 2 vCPUs to same 10 users without moving any VMs off the host -> users themselves reported improvement and that desktops now works almost as good as their previous physical computers

Moving from View 5.0-- Which version is most stable/best performing?

$

All,

I have a customer (financial institution) that has gone 100% VDI at all banking branches. We started building this two years ago on ESXi/View 5.0.1 -- Now, with so many versions out and View 6 incoming, any advice on which version to upgrade to? There are only two key items that matter for the customer:

* Reliability

* Performance

They are not interested in any major features but just want good old fashioned desktop pools. Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Monitor/Count Users which conncting via Security Server

Hello

I'd like to count the sessions which are established by the security server, so i can find out who and how many users are logged in externally. If possible i want to have the results linked to the pool which he is assigned to.

So I can see for example that yestarday at 15:00 there were 50 connections over the security server. 10 were assigned to pool A 30 to Pool B and another 10 to Pool C.

I've tried to monitor this with View PowerCli, but unfortunately get-remotesession is not displaying by which connectionserver the Session is established.

Someone got an idea? Maybe i can grab it out of the View Event Database?

Multiple Sessions Occurring per User

$

We have several floating pools where users will sign in on a second device while a session is active on another device and end up with a new session rather than joining their previous session. Allow multiple sessions per user is set to no, and automatic logoff after disconnect is set to never (as per http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1007581). The cases I have personally witnessed were using a secondary device to connect, but I am wondering if some users are just trying to reconnect after a session timeout and ending up with a new session as well.

Has anyone else had issues with users receiving new sessions rather than successfully connecting back to an existing session that they are just disconnected from?

Thanks.

Issue with new HP USB printer through View 5

$

Hi,

We're running View 5.  Users have been distributed a new HP printer (HP Laserjet 1102W) which has a usb interface.  When users stick in the usb interface to their physical laptop (Windows XP), the drivers are installed automatically via a built in usb drive in the printer itself.  Thus there is no need to run a CD and install the drivers.  This is kicked off automatically, similar to the way a CD is inserted into a CD-ROM drive and it autoplays.

Now, in trying to redirect the pritner within View 5, when I select the Hewlett-Packard USB Printing Support under the Connect USB device menu, it doesn't detect the printer properly.  It actually detects it as usb storage and places it under "unspecified" ind the devices and printer control panel.  It labels it as "Vmware view Virtual USB Device 02", category: unknown, and status:  needs troubleshooting.  When I go to device manager on the VDI workstation (which is running Windows 7), it categorizes them under "other devices, and it actually picks up the proper printer name, but it has a question mark bubble besides it, as well as a yellow exclamation mark besides HP EWS.

Is this type of interface something that would not be compatible with View, since it expects to see a printer via a usb connection, but first it needs to install driver files off of a usb embedded storage device in the printer first, before it knows that it is a printer.

How necessary is a graphics card for Horizon View?

$

I'm wondering how important it really is for a graphics card to help with graphics using Horizon. None of my customers will be using graphics intensive software, such as games or CAD. With that said, will the experience be much like a laptop experience to customers, with no special graphics but things are ok overall?

View HTML Access to physical desktop

We would like to utilize View HTML Access to connect to physical machines, but it appears it is not supported.  We’re not ignoring the full View client using RDP, but HTML

Access would be more convenient in the use case we’re considering.

The VMware Horizon View 5.2 HTML Access FAQ and troubleshooting KB article states the following:

Q: Will the Blast Agent work on physical desktops as well as virtual machines?

A: The Blast Agent is only supported for virtual machines. There is nothing on the functionality that
requires the desktop to be a virtual machine.

The "System Requirements for HTML Access" section in the Using VMware Horizon View HTML Access document states "View desktop     The following software must be

installed in the virtual machine that the user will access:".

We've tested HTML Access to physical machines in a View 5.2 environment and have observed that it cannot adjust the resolution on the physical machine to match
the browser window.  Therefore, it just picks a lower resolution and then sets the physical machine to that, which results in black space around the desktop in the

browser window.  In a View 5.3 environment we’ve found you can’t connect to a physical desktop at all, unless the browser doesn’t support the new Toggle Full Screen

feature, which then results in the same look as View 5.2 with black space around the desktop.

Basically, I just want to confirm whether or not HTML Access to physical machine is officially supported.  If it's not, is there any speculation whether it will be supported in

future versions?

Thanks

Location Based Printing. Any experience with DELL Printers?

Hi all,

we had some bad experience with HP printers due to driver issues and HP product known issues (specific to the model we were testing).

We're looking at switching to DELL printers for our location based printing offices.

Does anyone have a configured location based printing with DELL printers?

I was thinking about  this one: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&cs=cabsdt1&l=en&sku=225-3074

One requirement is that the printer would have to be as small as possible but still come ethernet.

Thanks!

Personna Management - Unified Desktop - Multi site design

$

Hi to everyone,

looking for some advices on how to achieve the right implementation of personna management in a multi site environment to have a unified user environment between physical computers and View desktops.

If you were to install PM on laptop - desktop with redirection of folders to a share with the same in view that way users have a unified environment, how would you set this up taking into account that you have branch offices and there is no way to consider people downloading / syncing their profile accross the wan ?

I was thinking of implementing the share on a DFS but would there be any issues / limitation doing so ?

As anyone already been through such scenario ?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

VMware View printing over VPN

$

Hi all

We are looking to deploy VMware View to a new remote office. We will be installing WYSE P25 terminals for users to access their View desktop. The office currently has a site to site VPN. There is a networked printer onsite that users print to.

After some initial tests we have some connectivity issues with accessing VMware View over a VPN. The View client displays an error "The connection to the remote computer ended"

The View broker(s) can be accessed via DNS address over WAN, so we presume there is an issue with encapsulating PCoIP traffic within a VPN tunnel?

As far as I can tell the VPN tunnel would only need to be used so that the printer can be deployed via thin print to the users desktop?

Has anyone had to deal with a similar scenario? There must be other organization's that use VMware view remotely and print to networked printers?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Many thanks,

Matt

Starting with VDI

Hi,

this is my first post and my first experience in solutioni for VDI arena .

I've evaluated vmware and citrix reference architectures and I'm asking a bit of support to rapidly have a sizing/licensing idea.

My customer has 6k physical workstation to virtualize. Each workstation (windows 7) uses only web apps and firefox browser utilities. We are talking about travel agencies so printers and Pos and fax need to be managed through virtual desk as in physical workstation.

A building block (vmware references) supports over 1400 virtual desktop.

Which vmware (and external e.g. Sql Server) product should I put in place to realize a "generic" HA virtual desktop infrastructure?

May you kindly provide guidance for my preliminary steps?

Thanks in advance & regards

Poor PCOIP Performace using 2008R2 as the Desktop

Anyone else out there running 2008R2 as the View Desktop?  We are testing it and for a while it worked great.  For some reason now the graphics performance has really degraded and is almost unusable.  If I use RDP via the View Client or with the MS RDP client it works fine.

Any suggestions?

Session state Disconnect 'Remote Sessions"

I have a test environment of View 5.2 under "Remote Sessions"  I see few disconnected session 40 days old.I think, If a user disconnects from his session (PCoIP/RDP). The remote session should be cleared.

Right now it gives false number stating that 30 people are connected in remote session but actually only 10 are connected.

Any idea, why we see this behavior and how to fix this issue?

I can try restarting the broker service but I would like to know what others have to say about it.

Thanks

Horizon View VMs Limit Disk IO

$

We are in a View 5.0.1 in vSphere 5.0 environment running Windows 7 64bit. Periodically we see some browsers (Chrome and Firefox) in combination with Flash and Flash Player Container generating 1000s of IOPS. Essentially bringing the environment to a crawl for 5 - 10 minutes. The situation stabilizes once the storm clears up. We use systrack to analyze OS level activity and are not seeing a mass update of plugin. It looks more like some kind of bug within browsers and flash plugin.

I would like my fellow admins to chime in and say if they have witnessed something like this in their environment. I am trying to fix the source of the problem and that's where I want to focus my energy. However we would like to control the IOPS per VM and understand that there is a limit for IOPs under VM configuration of resources. We have played around and felt one way to tackle this would be limit IOs per VM, but it is two edged sword. It protects you from IO storm but otherwise limits the performance while installation of a software or launching applications and so on.

Do you limit IO per VM in your VDI environment to protect from rogue VM/s of this kind of event bringing the environment to crawl? I thought of SIOC but all the VMs are desktops and we cannot really differentiate high priority VMs and low priority VMs.

Thanks in Advance.

Improving video playback View 5.2

Hi All,

We have a pool of non-persistant, floating, linked-clones vm's.  When video files are played they are a bit choppy and would like to improve the video quality.  Tried Throttling and didn't it really make a difference.

The Parent Image is configured with Win 7 64-bit, 2GB Reserved RAM, 40 MB of video Memory.

Which of these settings will help improve the performans of video playback?

Thanks

View Licensing Question: Do local sessions on an workstation count towards used licenses?

$

Hello,

we are using VMware Horizon View in two flavors: a dynamic pool and with regular desktops. The desktops are normally used as a regular workstation i.e. someone sitting in front of that computer. But sometimes the user needs to access his machine remotely. So we decided to install the view agent. Recently we noticed that, when a User is logged in on his desktop locally the remote sessions counter increases as well. We've tried to find a licensing information if this is really correct behavior but where not successful.

So our question is: Do sessions with view protocol type console really count towards used licenses? Any hint to a official document is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
